Are children naturally picky? It sure seems that way. Yet, amazingly, pickiness used to be almost nonexistent. Well into the 20th century, Americans saw children as joyful omnivores who were naturally curious and eager to eat. Of course, this doesn't make sense today. Don't kids have special taste buds? Aren't they highly sensitive to food's texture and color? Aren't children incapable of liking “adult foods,” and don't parents risk harming kids psychologically by urging them to eat?But Americans in the past didn't think any of those things. They assumed that children could enjoy the same foods as adults, and children almost always did. They loved spicy relishes, vinegary pickles, and bitter greens. They spent their allowances on raw oysters and looked forward to their daily coffee. So how did modern kids become such incredibly narrow eaters? The story is fascinating – and about much more than rising abundance. Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History (St Martin's Press, 2026) by Dr. Helen Veit shows how fussy eating came to define "children's food" and reshape American diets at large. Maybe most importantly, it explains how we can still use the tools that parents used in the past to raise happy, healthy, wildly un-picky kids today. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Imagine a blueprint unfolding in Washington, not on paper, but through executive orders reshaping America's government. Project 2025, spearheaded by the Heritage Foundation, aimed to dismantle the administrative state and restore family-centered policies, as stated in its Mandate for Leadership: "go to work on Day One to deconstruct the administrative state."[3][8]Fast forward to February 2026, and the Center for Progressive Reform reports the Trump administration has initiated or completed 53 percent of its domestic agenda—283 out of 532 actions across 20 agencies.[2] This isn't theory; it's action. Take health care: Project 2025 proposes redefining the Department of Health and Human Services as the "Department of Life," rejecting abortion as healthcare and directing the FDA to revoke mifepristone approval while urging the DOJ to prosecute doctors and women, even in miscarriages.[1] Echoing this, a November 2025 executive order, "Fostering the Future for American Children and Families," tasks HHS with modernizing child welfare using AI for caregiver recruitment and partnering with faith-based groups.[6]Education faces upheaval too. The plan calls for eliminating the Department of Education, privatizing student loans—potentially hiking costs for working families—and axing Head Start, which serves 833,000 low-income kids.[3] It also ends Public Service Loan Forgiveness and income-driven repayment.[3] Labor proposals strike harder, banning public sector unions and repealing Davis-Bacon wage rules to ease union decertification.[3]Immigration? Mass deportations loom, shifting immigrant children from HHS to enforcement-focused DHS, ending birthright citizenship, and deploying military for border ops.[1][4] A March 2026 order removes housing barriers by slashing EPA permitting and energy mandates, prioritizing affordability but critics say at environmental cost.[6]Experts warn of authoritarian drift. The ACLU highlights risks to voting access, surveillance, and protests, while LULAC notes state tests like Texas abortion laws preview national criminalization.[1][4][7] Proponents see sovereignty restored; detractors, civil rights eroded. As midterms approach, trackers like Project2025.observer signal more milestones ahead.[9] Will Congress curb or codify these shifts? Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Apology: Helen Veit's audio has a lot of “ducking”, in which a word or multiple words were clipped. This happened during the recording, and cannot be fixed in the audio edit. We'll work hard to make sure this never happens again. In nineteenth-century America, cookbook authors, concerned doctors, and food reformers believed that children had a problem with food. Children, reformers worried, would “eat anything and everything.” If they were to grow into healthy adults, they needed a special diet—“children's food”—which meant that for the first time in human history children would have to eat differently from everyone else. That moment was one step along a path that my guest Helen Zoe Veit traces in her new book Picky: How American Children Became the Fussiest Eaters in History. Beginning in a mid-nineteenth century world in which children routinely ate oysters, organ meats, sauerkraut, and richly spiced dishes alongside adults, she carries the story forward to our own moment—an era of childhood obesity, nutritional anxiety, supermarket abundance, and the widespread assumption that children are “food rejectors by nature.” But as Veit argues, mass childhood pickiness is not deeply biological. It is overwhelmingly cultural. And culture, unlike biology, can change.Helen Zoe Veit is Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University. She specializes in American food history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is the author and editor of numerous works on food, morality, and culture. Blame it on American individualism or a political aversion to regulation, but the United States has become a striking outlier in its failure to regulate the assisted reproductive technology industry. As a result, individuals from other countries have begun engaging in quasi–birth tourism through American surrogacy contracts, and not in small numbers. Chinese billionaire Xu Bo, for example, has reportedly fathered more than 100 American children through surrogacy and has been involved in legal battles over custody, describing them as part of his “business legacy". Beyond clear international abuses of U.S. surrogacy laws, there are also numerous domestic practices that warrant greater oversight and protection. The central question is why? What do they want these children for? Who, if anyone, is regulating these contracts? And why have lawmakers declined to address this rapidly growing industry?Charles Hilu is a reporter for The Dispatch based in Washington, D.C. On this week's episode we talk to Don Wells, the Chief Empowerment Officer at Just In Time, which is a San Diego based organization working to support and mentor older foster youth on their path to adulthood. President Trump signed an executive order on foster care at the end of 2025 which instructed his Department of Health and Human Services on some priorities for federal policy around improved data and evaluation, more support for older foster youth, and more efforts to include faith-based persons and organizations in child welfare services. The Imprint recently published an op-ed from Wells, who felt that the president's order misses the mark on what is needed from the federal government to better support foster youth. He joined the podcast to speak further about his views on the Trump order, about what Just in Time does on the community level to help foster youth, and more. How is this still a thing? The court case drags on over President Trump's attempt to declare that American children born in this country are not citizens if their parents aren't citizens. The Constitution begs to differ, so a federal judge has made a move to circumvent the sympathy coming from Trump's accomplices on the US Supreme Court. The long-anticipated MAHA Report : “Making our children healthy again” is published. In the preamble it claims “to be a call to action, presenting the stark reality of American Children's declining health, backed by compelling data and long-term trends.” It unpacks the potential dietary, behavioral, medical and environmental drivers behind the crisis. Rodger Wasson and Callie Eideberg of the Vogel Group studied the report and discus the implications to the food industry in this episode of Farm To Table Talk. Callie Eideberg is a well-regarded policy expert on agriculture, land conservation, water policy and environmental issues, known for her ability to work with both political parties. Before joining the Vogel Group she served as Senior Professional Staffer to Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chair of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee.

What if every child could attend the school where he or she would learn most successfully? Empowering parents to choose their children's school is called educational—orschool—choice. School choice allows parents to better meet their children's tailored educational needs and circumstances.Nationwide polling shows that strong majorities of voters support parents having “the right to use tax dollars designated for their child's education to send their child to the public or private school which best serves their needs.” So far this year, Tennessee, Idaho, and Wyoming have joined 12 other states enacting universal or near-universal school choice laws for their students. According to the nonprofit organization EdChoice, approximately 40% of American children are now eligible to participate in a school choice program that includes private options. Millions more attend charter schools or benefit from other kinds of publicschool choices.Children are unique, with different talents, interests, and learning styles. Schools that work well for some don't always meet the needs of others. It's time for Oregon to join the “school choice states,” so every child has the chance for aneffective, motivating, and successful school experience.
Vidcast: https://www.instagram.com/p/DDvCTv2yG5Z/ Over the past 4 years, the numbers of US kids receiving their measles shots before entering kindergarten has been on the decline. The result: this year saw a 4-fold increase in serious measles outbreaks, 16 versus 4 in 2023. Measles vaccine has saved more lives over the past 50 years than any other vaccine. Measles is highly contagious and there is no treatment for it. Many people say, “big deal…some skin blotches.” It is a big deal since measles can trigger life-threatening pneumonia, seizures, and brain infections called encephalitis. Make sure that your child gets the measles vaccine, the MMR or Measles, Mumps, Rubella or so-call German Measles vaccine. AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports on an investigation into Native American children dying in US government boarding schools.
For 150 years, the United States government sent Native American children to remote boarding schools as part of a systematic effort to seize tribal lands and eradicate culture. Dozens of these schools were run by the Catholic Church or its affiliates. A Washington Post investigation revealed widespread sexual abuse of generations of these children at many institutions. Episode 179 - Health Heroes! I was very excited to have Dr. Shiva back on the show to make sure people understand the gravity of our current healthcare system. The life expectancy charts are showing us that our children are going to die younger than us. What I like about Dr. Shiva is that he breaks down why this is happening with system science and also points out how much we have been lied to by politicians who are responsible for writing the policies that have gotten us into this mess. Dr. Shiva is running for President of the United States as an independent for the working class. He has already begun putting his presidential policies into action as a private citizen to get the ball rolling now so people have the education and the tools to win back our health and our freedom. Welcome to today's episode of The Wright Report, your daily dose of news and updates impacting America and the world. Today we dive into three major briefs. First, we discuss alarming numbers from the US Department of Education regarding America's children and what we can do to mitigate the issue. Our second topic is the record number of arrests of individuals on America's terror watch list by US Border Patrol agents. Our third brief revolves around Joe Biden's recent controversial remark, calling China's President a dictator, which may have inadvertently revealed classified information. To wrap up, I'll be addressing Kyle from Connecticut's question on Digital Exhaust and if using a VPN can help protect one's privacy.
Many concerns need to be tackled as we deal with the aftermath of the pandemic, including the state of our society and country. The Democratic Party has deviated from American values and has become the party of big pharma and censorship. In recent memory, America has never been more divided. Today, we are fortunate to have our special guest Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an American environmental lawyer, and 2024 Democratic Party Presidential Candidate. He uses his voice to inform the American people of the country's failings, and to reunite the nation back to its' foundational values. Please take a moment to listen to this episode as he discusses his plans as president, and the need to stop censorship and corruption in the government. Don't miss this episode! Quotes: “The government shouldn't practice censorship. It is a First Amendment violation. And I'll create an executive order that prohibits all government departments from influencing public opinion or suppressing the American people by sending a memo on the first day of my administration.” - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “When Pfizer gives you a million dollars, they're not doing it out of philanthropic impulses. They're doing it because they expect to get something in return.” - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “In a world where rewarding the rich and punishing the poor, this nation has evolved into a form of cushy socialism for wealthy people in this cruel, ruthless capitalism for the country's middle class and poor. And that needs to end.” - Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Key Takeaways: When government officials order private entities to silence dissenting voices, they are in violation of the First Amendment because the government is engaging in censorship. They're not allowed to do that, which shouldn't be tolerated in the government. Big companies give money to the government not because they have any altruistic motives but because they want to purchase access, and they want to purchase action from the government that is often detrimental to the public interest. That's why it's important to keep corporate money out of the government. Wealthier people have more societal comfort and privileges than the middle class and the poor. They become entitled, believing they are superior to everyone else. But it must stop now because everyone deserves to be treated well, including those who are middle-class and poor. Highlights/Timeline: [05:35] Background of Robert's inspiration and what catalyzed him into a presidential candidacy [11:31] How does Robert aim to tackle censorship? [16:13] How Robert reclaims the public's trust in the government [38:32] Bobby's story of how he became interested in the environment [49:05] Bobby's first public live event in San Diego [51:00] Making a healthy generation of American Children Conclusion: As a nation, we must ensure that these large aggregations of power are not damaging our nation, our democracy, and the free flow of information. Despite being the richest nation in the world, the United States also has many people suffering from chronic diseases. No country in the world spends more on healthcare than we do, and yet we have the second largest population with the lowest health outcomes. This is unacceptable - we need to do better. America has never been more divided. The fundamental issue is how polarized both sides have become. A divided society cannot fend off exploitation or totalitarian takeover. The traditional American can-do spirit wears down in these never-ending battles. So let's bridge the gap and unite American citizens. Future Generations is proud to host a historic event for the city of San Diego during Memorial Day Weekend. Be a part of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s first public event since announcing his candidacy for President of the United States. In an episode jam-packed with thought crimes at every turn, Charlie is joined by two conservative, female trailblazers who built their careers by courageously spreading objective truths despite the societal consequences. First—the Editor-In-Chief of The Post Millennial, Libby Emmons, joins Charlie to share a gut-wrenching development in the transgender war on American Children. Next, the man who literally wrote the book on why College is a scam is joined by none other than a college professor, Professor of Law at UPenn, Amy Wax who validates the central thesis of Charlie's new book, "The College Scam" in a way that only a university system insider like herself can. Case in point, Dr. Wax shares the story of her own continuing struggle with the intolerance that exists within the echo chambers of "elite" Ivy League institutions. Recounting the attempt to "cancel" her that has been underway for months, she explains the so-called egregious improprieties that have caused the campus marxists to all but riot to have her removed from campus. For simply stating the truth about everything from the objective beauty of Western Culture to the unparalleled narrative of lies surrounding race and crime to biological realities such as the mere existence of women, Professor Wax has staked her claim as the last conservative inside the Ivys and it could very well cost her everything in todays climate of liberal intolerance. And as they close out their thoughtful conversation, she shares all the ways that you can learn more and support her and all the other fighters so that we may possibly reclaim our once-lauded institutions from the grips of the Radical, Angry Left.
