What Do I Do When I Meet Resistance to this Style of Parenting?

What do I do when I meet resistance to this style of parenting? For many of us, when we make the change to parent in a more connected, attachment-centered way, it can be a jarring change to those around us. For many people, there is never a second thought about continuing in the parenting style and practices they were raised in. For lots of us, however, parenting in the style we were raised in presented major complications, especially when met with kiddos who have experienced early trauma, stress or adversity in life. Becca McKay and host JD Wilson sat down to talk about how to navigate the resistance many of us face in this way of parenting. We address everything from "Isn't it permissive parenting?" to "that's not how we raise our kids" to "I'm trauma informed, I watched a slideshow on trauma the other day." If you're needing a reminder of why we do things the way we do, or you just need to know how to handle the questions that come as a result, today's your episode! Lastly - Big News! It's a problem. My child is constantly using manipulation and control to get whatever they want and I don't know how to stop it. In our most watched YouTube video in our channel's HISTORY, Dr. Karyn Purvis reminds us that this narrative is WRONG. What if your child is not a 'bad kid' who is manipulative and controlling? What if your child has endured some early trauma, stress and adversity and these strategies are survival strategies, not problematic patterns? Join Tona Ottinger, Becca McKay and host JD Wilson as we take a deep dive into Dr. Purvis' framework for how to handle manipulation and control. You'll leave with some practical philosophies and practices to transform your view of your child and help them negotiate their needs in a healthy, connected way! Also - WE HAVE SOME BIG NEWS! As you know if you're a regular listener, we empower Facilitators to take our parenting course, Cultivate Connection to their local communities. JD Wilson- dad and host of the Empowered to Connect Podcast- believed that his reputation as a 'legend' when he was baby-sitting other people's kids meant he'd be a rock star parent. Then he actually became a parent :) and we all know how that went! JD and his wife turned to connected parenting because they didn't know what else to do.  Their tools weren't working, the way that they were parented weren't working, and he wanted to learn a different way.It wasn't easy.  In fact, JD said “for the first couple years of shifting our parenting, it felt like we were running through a swamp.”  It was just so hard to actually put the connected parenting ideals into practice. JD bravely, boldly, humbly, and humorously shares his journey from spankings to being the co-host of a connected parenting podcast, working and supporting other parents who are also making the journey from punitive to connection based parenting both through the podcast and his work at Memphis Family Connection Center. We're keeping it real here today, and I hope you love JD and his story as much as I do.If you'd like to read a thorough summary of episode, CLICK HERE.You can find the Empowered to Connect podcast here: https://empoweredtoconnect.org/podcast/ or simply search for Empowered to Connect wherever you listen to podcasts!Goodies you can find on my website:FREE Brilliance of Attachment eBook at https://robyngobbel.com/ebookFREE masterclass on What Behavior Really Is and How to Change It at https://robyngobbel.com/masterclass *******The Club is a virtual community for the families of kids with big, baffling behaviors and the professionals who support them. https://robyngobbel.com/theclubApplications for the 2023 cohort of Being With ~ a year-long immersive and holistic program for parenting professionals ~ will open summer 2022. https://robyngobbel.com/beingwith

Welcome to season 2, episode 20 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is JD Wilson, Founder, Lead U. JD found his calling early on when he was a counselor at a leadership camp while he was in college. He talks about how when he would drive away after the camp was over that he would be a little emotional. He goes on to share that he realized that was what "joy" felt like. Helping those kids connect, laugh, and feel inspired. He knew that was where he was supposed to be and that was what he was supposed to do.After college JD went on to serve four years in the Air Force. He went all over the world. While in Iraq he was hosting talent shows for those in the service to help them feel connected and bring fun to what was a difficult time. When he came back, he knew that teaching would be the best stage for him and up until 2016 it was. Something changed for JD at that point. He wanted to make a greater impact, bring more joy, and help more kids. So, he decided one year and one day before receiving tenure that he was going to leave teaching and start a company that would provide empowering and motivating presentations for learners of all ages. The whale became the logo and off JD went with a leaf blower and a dream to his first school presentation. As JD shares that first one did not go according to plan. You just don't bring a leaf blower to a school. He didn't let the first one get him down, although his drive home that day did not provide him with the same joy that he had expected. He tweaked the program and onward he went. JD and the Lead U Crew have been teaching learners of all ages about the importance of empathy, teamwork, connection, and more through fun and innovative exercises. JD took a small break and taught in Hawaii during the height of the pandemic, but he came back to help those from the classroom to the boardroom be the best version of themselves. For more information about Lead U go to www.leaduthere.com. Next week, my co-host is Kiran Handa Gaudioso, CEO, United Way Northern New Jersey. Welcome to season 2, episode 19 of the Today is the Day Changemakers Podcast. This week my guest is Tara Pollifrone, Mom to a five month old daughter and Founder of The Beacon society, a personal growth company whose mission is to cultivate a society of women who are no longer afraid to shine their light. This episode really shines a light on the importance of connecting with who you truly are. Up until the age of 32 years old Tara says she was on auto pilot and now after doing a lot of inner child work she feels like she just flows. She did not have the easiest of childhoods and feels that she disassociated from many of the memories that were made. However, being in school always made her feel connected, so she decided to become a teacher and teach Special Education Math in High School. Although she loves working with the kids she now has a passion to teach people in a different way. She is currently being led to work with moms and is still gaining clarity around exactly what that will look like. However, she knows that through human design and inner child work she can help women find themselves and unapologetically show up in their life with more joy, confidence fulfillment, passion and success.  We talk about some of the challenges Tara had with conceiving her daughter and how that experience allowed her to go through understanding her own personal triggers. We also discuss the demands of motherhood and the importance around the word surrender. In order to provide the nourishment of love and attention to those we are ultimately responsible for, we must do the same for ourselves. Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there. Listen in to hear the footprint that Tara is creating now that she wants to leave behind. Follow Tara on Instagram @thebeaconsociety. Next week, my guest is JD Wilson, Founder, Lead U.  Lead U focuses on creating Personalized Empowerment Experiences for learners that range from the classroom to the boardroom. . With just one year left until JD would have received tenure as an elementary school teacher, he decided to do something different and change course. That's right, it's a BONUS EPISODE of the ETC Podcast today! In light of Show Hope's Hope For the Journey Conference going live today, we at ETC wanted to share some stories of hope. Everyone on this connected parenting journey was inspired to begin parenting this way at some point - and at some point shortly after starting, probably failed miserably. That's the story at least for the 5 families who came together to discuss their connection based parenting journeys on the show today. Join our host JD Wilson and his wife Elizabeth, Mo and Tona Ottinger from ETC, Matthew and Anteelah Love, Chris and Paula Powell as well as Matt and Grace Terhune as they discuss how it started and how it's going. If your parenting soul is struggling today and could use some stories of solidarity in the struggle, this episode is for you! Today on the podcast, we have JD Wilson (@jd_leadu), founder of LeadU (@lead_u_), a company that empowers children and teens to find the leader within, while teaching important lessons on kindness, mindfulness and self-awareness in a FUN, silly and impactful way.JD started his company because something was missing from the traditional classroom experience. He was drawn to the deeper lessons on character development and followed that call by creating LeadU. To this day, LeadU has impacted thousands of lives beyond the classroom experience.LeadU assemblies and workshops engage learners through fun, collaboration and play. JD and his team meet kids where they're at and provide opportunities to learn about stuff that really matters. We loved having JD on the podcast! If you're interested in learning more about what JD and his team do at LeadU, check out: http://www.leaduthere.com.We hope you enjoyed this episode, and as always, thank you for listening!

Our continuing story of how the nation's schools are reopening (or not) in the midst of the insanity. Joining me this time are Frank Guastela (Middle School Biology, NJ), Jade Cintron (ESL and Theater Educator, PA), and JD Wilson (3rd Grade, Hawaii). We had a great talk, and I am proud to continue to give our nation's educators a voice as we all struggle to ensure a safe education for our children. Support the show (http://patreon.com/lightersidepodcast)
