Are you facing a baffling, frustrating and emotionally intense struggle with your child?  Do you question everything you're doing as a parent because your best efforts don't seem to be working to change your child's misbehavior? In this episode of our "Surviving and Thriving After Trauma" series, we tackle an increasingly important question: What do parents need to know about trauma?  Austin is joined by Kari Nietzel, a behavior analyst with over 14 years of experience working with families and children who have experienced trauma. Together, they explore how trauma impacts children, how it manifests in behavior, and how parents and caregivers can better understand and support their kids. Austin and Kari discuss: The difference between cultural perceptions and clinical definitions of trauma Trauma behavior vs. normal behavior The importance of understanding the "why" behind a child's behavior Examples of trauma responses Behavior as communication Teaching kids (and adults!) appropriate ways to express needs and emotions How to encourage parents and caregivers facing the challenge of parenting a child from trauma  Key Takeaways: Trauma is complex and manifests differently in each child. Behaviors are a form of communication that should be approached with curiosity. Parents can learn to focus on their child's needs and seek appropriate strategies to help them thrive. We know you'll be encouraged, comforted and equipped with parenting strategies through this conversation as you learn from Kari's personal and clinical experiences.  Resources: Raising Kids with Big Baffling Behaviors by Robyn Gobell The Connected Parent by Karyn Purvis and Lisa Qualls TBRI podcast Calm Parenting Podcast If you enjoy listening to With You in the Weeds we'd love to hear from you! I dropped JB off for his first day of second grade yesterday. He's still at the age where he's super excited to go back to school. I'm currently at the age where I'm happy to drop him off. Will I miss him? Absolutely. Does he need the structure? 100%. Do I pray like crazy for him to be seen, loved, and have good friends this school year? Daily.    Going back to school always brings lots of emotions, but especially for our neurodivergent kiddos. As parents, we pray they can learn effectively, that they are seen for the incredible kids they are, and that they have friends who are kind to them (quirks and all).    Today author, podcaster, and adoptive mom Somer Colbert is joining me to talk about how to best support our neurodivergent kids. I want to assure you that even if your kids don't have neurodivergent struggles, there are kids all around us who need support and love as they (and their parents) try to best navigate their uniqueness. Somer challenges us with practical tips for establishing healthy expectations, building up our parenting toolbox, and finding ways to become a student of your child.    Would you take a minute with me today to pray for all of our kiddos who struggle socially, academically, or emotionally? Pray with me that they will be valued, loved, and have a great school year academically. Can I also encourage you to talk to your kids about how to love kids who might be different from them? It might be that one of the kindest things your family can do this school year is to notice and love the kids you encounter who are working through unique struggles.    Please listen to today's show and even share it with some friends. There's so much great information on supporting your kids, neurodivergent or not.   All things Cynthia Somer Colbert  Somer's podcast TBRI Method and Karyn Purvis

Children adopted from foster care or from abroad have often experienced abuse, neglect, or trauma. These children require a different form of parenting. In 2015, we interviewed Dr. Karyn Purvis, author of The Connected Child: Bring Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Family, and the founder and Director of the TCU Institute of Child Development. In this episode, we cover:Why is parenting kids who have been abused or neglected different from traditional parenting? What are the 3 most important things I should do during the first 6 months home with a newly adopted child? How can we discipline our children while still remaining connected and creating attachment? How can we help a child who has tantrums whenever he hears the word “no” or is told he can't do something? How long should parents stay home (if possible) when you adopt? An adult adoptee asks: I've seen before where you say that “Adoptive parents become the biological parents through connection. We change their Biology.” I've seen adoptive parents now call themselves biological parents because of this statement. I wonder if it isn't important for adoptive parents to accept they aren't their child's biological parents? Does their lack of acceptance affect how the child adjusts and reacts? You talk a lot about being proactive with children who have experienced abuse and neglect in order to help them and to improve their behavior. Can you explain what you mean?Parenting kids adopted from foster care and internationally can be hard on the marriage, especially when one of the parents is the one getting educated on the type of parenting these kids need and the other one has not “bought into” it yet. How to help that parent get with the program.Suggestions for maintaining a strong marriage when adopting older kids? How to handle criticism (implied or direct) about your parenting style when you are trying to follow the empower-to-connect style?Practical tools for encouraging attachment. This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. As we continue on in our series on homeschooling through life's challenges, I am excited to introduce you to my friend, Rebecca Butcher.  Her story of motherhood, loss, homeschooling, and adoption is full of God's grace and faithfulness.  Whether or not adoption is part of your family's story, this conversation with Rebecca will encourage you as you walk through the many beautiful and challenging moments of life as a homeschool mom. About Rebecca Although she'd say that her husband's suggestion to homeschool was a shock to her, Rebecca knew deep down that one day she would teach at home when she began practicing on her little sister nearly 40 years ago.  She has been married for 20 years this summer and is the mother to 5 children…three born of her womb and two born of her heart.  After the deepest grief of losing her second child and firstborn daughter to hypoplastic left heart syndrome, Rebecca's perspective shifted and God began the gentle awakening of leading her away from a career in the world and more towards nurturing hearts at home.  With backgrounds in both vocal performance and English literature, Rebecca seeks to cultivate the same adorations in her home where someone is always playing an instrument or they can be found piled together under a cozy blanket on the sofa reading aloud. Rebecca enjoys long walks on the beach that usually require her to turn around at the end of the island, late nights at the ballpark, her treadmill and the daily therapy that it brings, and endless cups of Earl Gray on her front porch talking to Jesus.  About Julie Julie H. Ross believes that every child needs a feast of living ideas to grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. As a former school teacher, curriculum coordinator, and assistant director of a homeschool academy, Julie has worked with hundreds of students and parents over the past 20 years. She has also been homeschooling her own five children for over a decade. Julie developed the Charlotte Mason curriculum, A Gentle Feast, to provide parents with the tools and resources needed to provide a rich and abundant educational feast full of books, beauty, and Biblical truth. Julie lives in South Carolina. When she's not busy homeschooling, reading children's books, hiking, or writing curriculum, you can find her taking a nap. Lighten up - that's the doctor's orders. Published research by Dr. Karyn Purvis shows that, typically, it takes about 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain. Which means we have to practice a thought 400 times before it becomes a belief or second-nature. BUT. When play is involved, that same synapse will develop over on 10 to 20 repetitions. So, today we're talking about lightening the f**k up while you learn to calm the f**k down. Apply for RewiredAF at kristenfinch.com/rewiredaf

The Mindful Marketer
A 2022 PLAYbook to Re-Engage Marketing Teams with Gary Ware

The Mindful Marketer

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 21, 2021 37:58

Two years into the pandemic, things still feel heavy. To cope, some professionals have turned to self-medication versus meditation (or other healthy habits). For many of us marketers, our creative candles have flamed out. Instead of focusing on discussing the theme, "The Great Resignation," what if we made 2022 "The Year of PLAY?" In Episode 51, we explore the connection of PLAY to performance with my colleague, Gary Ware. You may think I'm glossing over the severity of the pandemic. I'm not. I recognize and feel the collective global trauma on a daily basis. Instead, I'm inviting you to sit in the sandbox for a bit, and try on a new perspective.  Let me offer additional context from Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk. He is the author of the seminal book, The Body Keeps the Score.  Van Der Kolk believes that we have become overly dependent on pharmacological solutions to address trauma and mental illness in Western cultures. He calls it the "brain-disease model."  The model overlooks four fundamental truths: 1) Restoring relationships and community is central to restoring well-being  2) Language gives us the power to change ourselves and others and find a shared sense of meaning;  3) We can regulate our physiology…through basic activities such as breathing, moving, and touching; and  4) We can change social conditions to create environments where we can feel safe and where we can thrive." PLAY enables all four. That was enough for me to reach out to Gary Ware. In this livestream he outlined the strategies that he uses with marketing and leadership teams to re-ignite creativity, trust, and passion. He is the president of Breakthrough Play in San Diego, CA. Tune in this episode of The Mindful Marketer now—  Re-Engage Your Marketing Team: The 2022 Playbook. Watch the replay on LinkedIn.   Some key moments include:  ✔️ The PLAY model helps us create the right environment for learning and experimentation. Ware has taught this framework at AARP, Intel, Salesforce, SAP, and Kaiser Permanente. The PLAYbook consists of these 4 qualities: #1 - Psychological safety: Create an environment where people aren't afraid of being judged. Allow yourself to say something vulnerable. This gives other permission to do the same. #2 - Listening: Leaders must always listen to understand. #3 - Adapt - Adaptability is crucial to play.  #4 - Y- "The Why" - how can you accept reality and build on it? ✔️ The PLAY model isn't a trite acronym. It is a proven way to re-ignite job satisfaction, trust, and team confidence, especially in high stakes situations. Most people think of play as "it's childish" or "it's what kids do." In reality, Ware points to proven science of how play helps engage teams. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  ✔️PLAY helps you spend much less time repeating your messages–and hoping they stick.  Dr. Karyn Purvis conducted a study on how we learn and retain information. She found that creating a new synapse neural pathway requires about 400-420 repetitions before it sticks. However, you can shortcut that to as few as 10 repetitions if you add play. When you are playing, you are engaging all of your senses. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  You create a sandbox for your employees to play by creating those elements. Listen to the replay on Stitcher.  ✔️ Being a PLAY-full culture starts with one step: Find the moments or rituals in your organization that could use more playfulness.  Then, set your intentions using a template from Tiny Habits author,  BJ Fogg: "Before we start our brainstorming session, I will take 5 minutes and brainstorm ideas by myself, because I know it will pry my brain to be more creative." May your holidays be PLAY-full! See you next year. Copyright 2021, Lisa Nirell. In today's episode, Mo and Tona Ottinger join JD to take a deeper dive into the IDEAL Response and break down each component of the principle. The episode starts with audio from Dr. Purvis teaching the content - the original video she teaches in, as well as lots more connected parenting video content can be found on our YouTube channel here. Learn what it means to be: Immediate, Direct, Efficient, Action-Based and Leveled at the Behavior with content from Dr. Karyn Purvis and analysis from JD and The Ottingers! In the show, we mention the potential need for families/individuals dealing with level 4 behavior consistently to walk through deescalation training of some kind - to begin familiarizing yourself with that level of training, check out these resources below: https://www.crisisprevention.com/Our-Programs https://handlewithcare.com/who-we-train/parents/ To learn more about Empowered to Connect or to find more of ETC's resources, check us out at Empoweredtoconnect.org or follow us on Facebook or Instagram!

This week, Mr. Clement and Mrs. Massey chat with Emily Nienhuis, Director of One Heart Family Ministries, about Trust-Based Relational Interventions (TBRI) and how to implement this practice in our classrooms and parenting. A little over a week ago, our teachers participated in a training all about TBRI interventions. This training was created by Dr. Karyn Purvis, former Director of the TCU Institute of Child Development, to help caregivers provide effective support and treatment for at-risk children. TBRI is used in orphanages, residential treatment facilities, group homes, foster and adoptive homes, churches, and schools. In this podcast, Emily helps us understand the basics of TBRI and explains how it is helpful for all children, in all situations. The three main aspects of TBRI are connection, regulation and mindfulness. You will gain confidence in your parenting and hope for your family's future. They offer hope, share wisdom, and mentor you foster and adoptive parents. In this episode there are three major take aways:1. Go Big or Go Home, but know when to go homeFoster and adoptive families typically go big or go home by accepting many, many children into their homes. It is okay to say no, or set boundaries for your family. If you have a current foster or adopted child, or if you have had one in your home in the past, you have ALREADY followed your calling. It's okay to focus on the family you have now, whatever that may look like. 2. Peer to Peer support works! It's difficult for or may not feel safe for parents to reach out to the agency for support when they fought so hard to get a child placed in their home. Real moms have a greater capacity for empathy and real life experiences that inform practical advice.3. Parents have to be helped first. All the therapeutic, trauma-informed tools in the world aren't helpful, if the parent's needs aren't met. Parents need empathy and people to advocate for them before they are given or can be open to tools and teachings.Lisa and her husband Russ are parents of twelve by birth and adoption (ages 11-31), and more through foster care. As a Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI®) Practitioner, she walks alongside families with kids from “hard places.” Lisa also co-wrote the book The Connected Parent with Dr. Karyn Purvis being released this July. This episode of the podcast begins with Dr. Cross discussing how his history influences the work that he has been doing with families and children “from hard places” for almost 40 years. This conversation explores David's philosophical orientation as informed by the work of philosopher Benedict De Spinoza. David cites that Spinoza served as close to a philosophical “North Star” as anyone could get. David sees Spinoza as an ascetic, and one aspect of his life is the “honest work” that grounds us. Doing the real work of trying to make a difference. This conversation touches upon human growth and development, trauma and trauma-informed care, Eastern and Western philosophy, attachment, culture, and politics. Our conversation deconstructs the essence of the trust-based connection that Dr. Cross and his partner in the creation of the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development, Dr. Karyn Purvis, have worked to help bring to families and kids of the world. Bio: Dr. David Cross is the Rees-Jones Director of the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development and a Professor in the TCU Department of Psychology. Dr. Cross leads the Institute in its triple mission of research, education and outreach to improve the lives of children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and/or trauma. He has authored many peer-reviewed publications about issues regarding at-risk children. Dr. Cross earned his B.S. from California State University Fresno with a major in Psychology, and then attended The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for graduate study, beginning in 1980. He earned an M.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Statistics. He later earned a Ph.D. in Education and Psychology. In 1985, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor in TCU's Department of Psychology. Dr. Cross, with his former colleague Dr. Karyn Purvis, co-authored “The Connected Child: Bringing Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Family” to help adoptive parents understand the needs of children from hard places. “The Connected Child” continues to be a best-seller among adoption books. Together, Drs. Purvis and Cross created Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®), a holistic, attachment based, trauma-informed, and evidence-based intervention for children who have experienced relational trauma. Dr. Cross and his staff at the Institute regularly train professionals from around the world in TBRI®. The Institute is actively engaged in research that not only demonstrates the efficacy of TBRI® as an evidence-based intervention, but also in research about how to grow trauma-informed organizations and communities. In addition to his responsibilities at the Institute, Dr. Cross teaches many TCU courses including Case Studies in Child Development, Generalized Linear Models, and Graduate Developmental Psychology. Dr. Cross's wife, Trudy, is a retired Kindergarten teacher and a practicing Grandmother. His daughter, Jennifer, graduated from TCU in 2003, and is an environmental project manager for CB&I. His son, Nathan, is a former USMC Captain, and is now studying history at UTA. https://child.tcu.edu Learn more about this project at: www.thesacredspeaks.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Theme music provided by: www.modernnationsmusic.com Song of the week: My 66 by Shadows of Jets https://www.facebook.com/ShadowsOfJets/
