One of the top experts in the world of numismatics, Jeff Garrett sold more than 25 million dollars worth of rare coins and precious metals, he authored books like "100 Greatest U.S. Coins" and "United States Coinage: A Study By Type" and is the former president of ANA. During our very interesting talk, he told us fascinating stories about his 3+ million dollar purchase of a 1913 Liberty Head V nickel, how he started collecting coins and what is the most expensive piece he sold, and is there room for conspiracy in the infamous Denver's mint 1964 Peace dollar? Mr. Garrett explained the art behind the incredible work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the Double Eagle coin and President Theodore Roosevelt's involvement in it. We got to know why is he proudest of his role with the Smithsonian museum and his influence in opening a permanent gallery of numismatics in the American Museum of Natural History. We discuss the connection between currency and national pride, the importance to plant numismatics seeds, and what the future holds for the hobby. We even talked about Pawn Stars and his involvement in the series, and also the only Montenegrin national currency - perper. Numismatics is interesting!

Message from Jeff Garrett on Nov 4, 2018
Jeff Garrett had a nice life. Married, two kids, he and his wife both worked, and his job gave him the flexibility to be at home with his children. Hardly the portrait of a man on the brink of homelessness. And yet, in remarkably short order, Jeff found himself divorced, separated from his kids, penniless, evicted, mentally unstable, and contemplating suicide. Jeff’s story opens the door on a conversation about mental health and homelessness. What are the safety nets, and what happens when they fail? What’s the emotional and physical toll of homelessness? And what’s our collective responsibility as a society when it comes to helping the most vulnerable among us? This month on Life in the Balance, understanding, and coping with, homelessness.

We are meeting with Jeff Garrett, founder of Lumberjacks. In 2004, in one of those “wake up in the middle of the night” moments, Jeff Garrett thought of Lumberjacks and the timber industry theme. He immediately got to work on converting a generic diner to incorporate this theme and fittingly renamed the place … Lumberjacks. The brand has since grown to nine corporate and franchise restaurants throughout Northern California and Las Vegas, with 25-50 more predominantly franchise locations set to open in the next few years. Guests line up in droves for the experience and a taste of home-style cooking “Where the big boys eat.” ABOUT LUMBERJACKS: Garrett’s initial thought behind the theme was that everyone loves lumberjacks and wants to be like them because they work hard, eat a lot, and work well together. Restaurants have a 12-foot lumberjack statue in front, lumberjack competitions playing on TV screens, juniper wood covering the interior of the restaurant, axes as the door handles and other “woodsy” features. In part 2, we hear a clip for our Great Quotes in Franchising podcast.
