Rustin Chrisco had many adventures as a paramedic, including his time serving a prince in Saudi Arabia. He reached a point in which he no longer wanted to dedicate himself to such arduous labor and embarked on a new path. When he did so, he was in the right place at the right time, becoming a real estate developer in a town that was on the cusp of exploding. Listen to him recount the latter part of his time as a paramedic and his jump into flipping houses in this episode. You don't want to miss it. It's a good one.

In part one of our talk with him, listen to Rustin discuss his childhood and early jobs and how those led him into becoming a paramedic. From rural Arkansas to Saudi Arabia, he's helped people in a variety of settings, though the most interesting one didn't come in service to a king or a prince, but to a woman who had been shot seven times with one bullet. Give it a listen. It's a good one.

Today we had the absolute pleasure of hanging out with our buddy, Rustin Morgan, from Dry Creek Outfitters. If you haven't heard of them, you're missing out. We kick off the show with Blaine introducing Rustin and we hear how Rustin got into hunting and how he started his business with a relentless work ethic. Then we get talking a little about how they've worked together and how Rustin got his first dog (a boykin!). Blaine spent a ton of time choosing a litter and training the right dog to make sure Rustin got the ideal truck buddy and guide dog and let me tell you, Guy is exactly that. We chat with Rustin about Guy's first hunting season and hear the good, the unexpected and his workout routine for the dog that includes a pool and dumbbells.... it'll make sense when you listen. It was great to speak with Rustin and talk business. It's always inspiring to spend time with driven people who share common interests like dogs, bird hunting, entrepreneurship and working hard. If you're interested in having one of the coolest hunts ever, then you should give Rustin a call. Cheers. Can a musical comedy featuring Hamlet and Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger change lives? Actor, playwright, and director Colman Domingo thinks so. In Sing Sing, a new film from A24, Domingo stars in a true story about the power of theater. Inspired by the real-life Rehabilitation through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, Sing Sing tells the story of Divine G, played by Domingo, imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, who finds purpose by acting in a theater group with other incarcerated men. When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy. Sing Sing stars an ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors who are alumni of the RTA program, including Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin and Sean San José. Domingo takes us behind the scenes of the making of Sing Sing. He also shares how he became an actor after a class at Temple University and his own Shakespeare story including an inventive take on Helena from A Midsummer Night's Dream. Domingo is beloved for onscreen portrayals including Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin in Netlfix's Rustin for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Other films include Lincoln, Selma, If Beale Street Could Talk, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Zola, and The Color Purple. His breakthrough came as conman Victor Strand on Fear the Walking Dead. He won an Emmy for his performance as Ali on HBO Max's Euphoria. On stage he was nominated for Tony and Olivier awards for his role as Mr. Bones in The Scottsboro Boys. He wrote the book for the Broadway musical Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2024. In a year where actor Colman Domingo was honored for his work in “Rustin,” playing its titular character, he brings viewers another dynamic performance in “Sing Sing.” The film takes place in New York's Sing Sing Correctional Facility, following a group of inmates looking to stage their own production. Alongside Domingo, the film has a fellow Academy Award nominee in Paul Raci, but also former alums of the program like Sean San José and Clarence "Divine Eye" Maclin. The film's unique approach of casting formerly incarcerated folks is also paired with the fact that the entire cast was paid the same rate, all in service to the “community-based” approach the film's production took on. To discuss what went into the making of the film, and his role as “Divine G” in the film, is actor Colman Domingo. “Sing Sing” is out now in Select Theaters and in Wide Release on August 2.

These loyal road dogs have worn the rubber off the tires touring with Mr. Childers. First, they were strictly a live band enlisted to recreate and recharge the material from his first three studio albums Bottles and Bibles (2011), Purgatory (2017), and Country Squire (2019). But with the last two studio records—the triple-album, gospel-country opus Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? and last year's classic-meets-contemporary Rustin' in the Rain—the Food Stamps went from being his road-warrior comrades to eating big time alongside their leader onstage and in the studio. During Childers' headlining arena run and before his second sold-out night at the Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville, the Food Stamps' CJ Cain (acoustic/electric guitar/mandolin), Jesse Wells (electric guitar/mandola/banjo/baritone/fiddle), James Barker (guitar/pedal-steel), and Craig Burletic (electric bass/double bass) invited PG's Perry Bean inside their “living room” stage set. On this week's show, the panel returns to 1985 and reviews The Greatest Night in Pop, Netflix's star-studded documentary about how “We Are the World” (a charity single performed by USA for Africa, a supergroup comprised of the most popular artists not only of the time, but arguably, ever) came to be and the legendary night it was recorded. Although it features cameos from Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, and more, the documentary manages to be quite modest in its ambition. Then, the three discuss Rustin, director George C. Wolfe's biopic about Bayard Rustin, an advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. whose legacy has often been glossed over. Rustin stars a fantastic Colman Domingo as its titular lead and is a celebratory example of the importance of telling gay/queer stories with queer creatives above and below the line of production. Finally, it's the Slate True-Crime Canon! Cheyna Roth, contributor to the Canon and author of Between Two Wars: A True Crime Collection: Mysterious Disappearances, High-Profile Heists, Baffling Murders, and More joins to break down the monstrous endeavor. (Roth's other book is Cold Cases: A True Crime Collection) In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses Super Bowl LVIII and analyzes the advertisements, Usher's half-time performance, and the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce love story at the center of it all. Email us at culturefest@slate.com. Outro music: "Self Made Woman" by Katharine Appleton Endorsements: Dana: Her perfect plane movie, Dumb Money, which features a superstar cast that's always in-sync. Julia: Small Mercies by Dennis Lehane, an “all-consuming tale of revenge, family love, festering hate, and insidious power, set against one of the most tumultuous episodes in Boston's history.” Steve: A liquidus piano album by Mary Lou Williams, Zodiac Suite. The 1945 album seamlessly mixes classical and jazz influences throughout 12 pieces, each named for a different astrological sign. Podcast production by Jared Downing. This week on Rational Security, Quinta and Scott were joined by Lawfare Executive Editor Natalie Orpett and Cyber Fellow Eugenia Lostri to talk through the big national security news waking us up from our long winter's nap this week, including:“Rocky Mountain, Bye.” Colorado's Supreme Court has bid goodbye to former President Donald Trump's 2024 candidacy (for now, at least), holding in a 4-3 ruling that he is disqualified as a candidate by virtue of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Will this ruling hold? And where will it go from here?“Houthis to Sea, so Rudely, a Wop Bop a Loo Bop a Wop Bam Boom.” Attacks by Yemen-based (and Iran-backed) Houthi rebels have led major shippers to avoid the Red Sea, dealing a serious blow to global commerce. But the United States and a coalition of allies has announced a new maritime effort—the (perhaps too) aptly named Operation Prosperity Guardian—to keep trade flowing. What will this military operation look like? And what will it mean for the global economy?“Not So Bueno(s) Aires?” Argentina has a new president in the form of eccentric populist economist and literal dogfather Javier Milei. What does his election mean for the future of the country? We have a live dispatch from Buenos Aires to talk it over. For object lessons, Quinta recommended Jennifer Egan's 2022 classic “A Visit From the Goon Squad” and her latest “The Candy House.” Scott shared his preferred recipe for mulled wine and the secret ingredient: star anise. Natalie shared a wealth of new materials celebrating civil rights leader Bayard Rustin, including a new film Rustin, as well as a recent profile in The New Yorker. And Eugenia gave the people what they want with her endorsement of the Dragon Age series of games.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast.
