Happy 4th of July week! I'm hoping you have big plans with friends and family to celebrate our country's Independence Day. I found a new homemade ice cream recipe this summer that's super easy and has been a fan favorite. I'm linking it here in case you're feeling ambitious and want to give it a whirl. In continuing our “how do I series,” we have Jessica Hurlbut joining us today talking about the fear and disappointment of facing our kids' unexpected diagnosis. Jessica is a mom, podcaster, author, speaker, and avid runner. Fun fact: she was a contestant on Season 8 of American Ninja Warrior and had the opportunity to share her heart for adoption. As a mother of five children, several of which have special needs, Jessica has amazing advice on how to walk through the many emotions that come with a diagnosis of ADHD, autism, or any other unexpected diagnosis. There's so much great wisdom today, but I think one of my favorite things she says is this: When God doesn't change our circumstances, he desires to change our perspective. I promise you don't want to miss her five tips today. Also, I would be so grateful if you would send this to a friend or two that could benefit from some encouragement on their parenting journey. In today's episode, I get to sit down with my new friend, Jessica Hurlbut, author of Unlimited Motherhood. We explore her profound journey of faith, motherhood, and resilience. Jessica opens up about her experiences raising two children with autism, her battles with anger and doubt, and how her faith has grown through these challenges. From witnessing a miraculous healing at camp to preventing her future husband's suicide with a timely message, Jessica shares how listening to God's voice and obeying His guidance has shaped her life in extraordinary ways. Join us as we dive into her story of dependency on God and finding purpose in unexpected circumstances. Bio: Jessica Hurlbut is a pastor, a writer, an ultra runner, and a mom of five—two who struggle with autism, two adopted, and one typical teen boy. She spent nine years in the trenches of full-time ministry until 2012 when her daughter was diagnosed with level three autism. Four years later, Jessica's son was also diagnosed with severe autism. She refers to this season as her hidden years, where God did a great and humbling work in her life. During this time, the Holy Spirit called Jessica and her husband to adopt a sibling pair through foster care, and God opened their eyes to the great need for foster and adoptive parents in this country. This led Jessica to attempt to run 110 miles in 24 hours on National Adoption Day as a visual representation of the 110,000 kids in foster care who desperately need a forever family through adoption. Jesus whispered to Jessica's heart, “If you take care of my kids, I'll take care of yours.” Anchor Verse: Ephesians 3:20 Hebrews 11:6 Connect with Jessica: Website: https://www.jessicahurlbut.com IG: https://www.instagram.com/jessicahurlbut FB: https://www.facebook.com/jessica.hurlbut.3 ***We love hearing from our listeners! It's National Adoption Month! In honor of that, the podcast will be weekly this month to provide more opportunities for you to share episodes with friends who might not know as much about foster care or adoption in order to increase awareness. Let's spread the word! Once you become aware of the need within the foster care community, it's hard to focus on anything else, right? For Jessica Hurlbut, that is exactly what happened when she adopted a sibling group from foster care in 2015. Once she became aware of the needs in the foster care community, she knew she needed to display to others how they can help. In fact, she founded a run that led to the amount of foster homes in her county doubling! This Sunday at NTC Massena, we get to hear form Jessica Hurlbut as she shares with us on the importance of Growing Our Faith and how we can do that!
By now most children have returned to school—or at least some form of educational instruction. Depending on the state and school district, kids are either masked up and back in the school building, at home connecting to online classrooms, or navigating a combination of the two referred to as the “hybrid” option. But not all children are receiving the education they are entitled to. Recently, Sandra Flach, sat down with upstate NY adoptive mom, Jessica Hurlbut. Jess is mom of five kiddos—two of whom are adopted and 2 have autism. During their conversation, Jess shared how her family has struggled since March, especially her children with special needs. The Hurlbut family’s story is not unique. Across the country, foster and adoptive families and those with children with special needs are struggling to manage life in limbo. Parents are advocating for their child’s education and services while school districts are trying to figure out how to open and operate in the new reality caused by Covid.
