On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to archeologist and historian Bryan Ward-Perkins about his 2005 book The Fall of Rome: And the End of Civilization. Ward-Perkins was born and grew up in Rome, a son of architectural historian and archaeologist, John Bryan Ward-Perkins. Educated at Oxford University, Ward-Perkins eventually became a fellow of Trinity College at the same university, from which he has since retired. An archaeologist with a deep interest in economic history, Ward-Perkins' standout book The Fall of Rome was to a great extent a restatement of traditional understandings of the Roman fall in the wake of academic revisions stimulated by Peter Brown's 1989 World of Late Antiquity: AD 150-750. Ward-Perkins scholarship focuses on the outputs of economic production: fine pottery, grand public buildings and copious coinage. In contrast, Brown and his fellow travelers tended to focus on religious innovation and creativity in the centuries coincident with Rome's fall. The Fall of Rome documents in crisp, dense prose the material collapse attendant with the dissolution of the Western Empire in the late 5th and 6th centuries, from the vanishing of pottery in Britain to the cessation of the construction of massive buildings across the Italian peninsula. Razib also asks Ward-Perkins his opinions on his colleague Pete Heather's book The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians. Ward-Perkins sees Heather's work as complementary; while Ward-Perkins is interested in the material aspects of everyday Roman life, Heather documents and narrates the diplomatic and military affairs of the Roman elite. Ward-Perkins also comments on Chris Wickham's work in books like The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages 400-1000, which outlines how the Roman and post-Roman states differed, in particular, the disappearance in Europe of professional soldiers paid in currency, rather than feudal levies. They also discuss Walter Scheidel's Escape from Rome: The Failure of Empire and the Road to Prosperity, and whether Roman citizens were actually materially better off than their medieval successors. Ward-Perkins also gives his estimation of the time measured in centuries until Western Europe reattained Roman levels of social, technological and political complexity. If you have a sibling with autism, your future child's risk for an autism diagnosis is increased by a factor of 2 to 3.5×. Orchid's whole genome embryo reports can help mitigate your child's risk by screening for over 200 genetic variants definitively linked to autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. NEW EPISODE RELEASED Click the links below or in the show notes! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share another episode with this guest to have a tough conversation about the struggles his son will soon face. Dr. Steve Johnston is an MD/MBA with a vast understanding of the healthcare system, coupled with real-world experience in building companies, leading teams, & solving complex challenges. His son, Luke, has a rare genetic condition and is slowly going blind. Upon receiving the diagnosis that his son was going blind, nothing has been more important to Steve than championing the mission of A Race Against Blindness: support research & find a cure for retinitis pigmentosa caused by Bardet-Biedel Syndrome. This rare disease known as Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) is one of many genetic conditions that can cause RP/blindness in young children. His son, Luke, is actively going blind. Thus, the birth of A Race Against Blindness organization. Steve & his wife, Kristina, founded the nonprofit called A Race Against Blindness. But that really only scratches the surface in terms of their motivation. Since learning of Luke's diagnosis , Steve & Kristina have become strongly connected to the rare-diseases community. While rare diseases are actually not unusual, with more than 7,000 diseases classified by the FDA as rare, each one individually often affects only a small number of people. Thus many rare diseases don't receive enough resources to fund research for treatments or possible cures. Steve & Kristina are deeply dedicated to their mission, & their commitment is what will lead them to success. If you would like to learn more about this story, or would like to donate to the cause, please see their website link below or in the show notes. Dad Up! NEW EPISODE RELEASED Click the links below or in the show notes! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share another episode of Parenting Pep Talk. In today's episode, I want to share a question I received from a fan of the show. So I thought we could dive into the topic of building a deep connection with your teenager. As parents, it is crucial to maintain a strong bond with our teenagers, as this connection plays a vital role in their emotional well-being, development, and overall happiness. So, let's jump right in! Segment 1: Understanding the Teenage Mind During adolescence, teenagers undergo significant physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. They are exploring their identities, seeking independence, and experiencing intense emotions. Understand these emotions. Segment 2: Active Listening and Effective Communication Important to Practice genuine interest in their lives, thoughts, and concerns. Encourage open and honest communication by creating a safe and non-judgmental space. Avoid interrupting or dismissing their feelings, and instead, validate their experiences. Segment 3: Quality Time and Shared Activities Spending quality time with your teenager can strengthen your bond and create lasting memories. Find activities that you both enjoy and make time for them regularly. Segment 4: Respect and Trust Building a deep connection requires mutual respect and trust. Respect your teenager's opinions, even if you disagree. Involve them in decision-making processes and show that their input is valued. Avoid excessive control or micromanagement, as it can hinder the development of trust. Segment 5: Empathy and Emotional Support Adolescence can be a challenging time emotionally. Show empathy and provide emotional support for your teenager. Validate their feelings, offer guidance, and help them navigate through difficult situations. Safe to come to you. Building a deep connection with your teenager is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and effort. By practicing active listening, effective communication, spending quality time, and providing emotional support, you can create a strong and lasting bond with your teenager. Remember, the teenage years are a precious time for growth and self-discovery, and your role as a parent is crucial in helping them navigate this transformative stage of life. Dad Up! So, let's explore how positive affirmations can positively impact our parenting journey. To start, it's important to understand what positive affirmations are. Positive affirmations are statements that reflect our desired outcomes or qualities. They are often repeated to ourselves in order to reinforce positive beliefs and thoughts. In parenting, positive affirmations can help us develop a positive mindset, build confidence, and improve our relationships with our children. Positive affirmations have several benefits in the context of parenting. Firstly, they can help us focus on the strengths and positive qualities of our children. By affirming their capabilities and unique qualities, we can boost their self-esteem and encourage them to embrace their individuality. Secondly, positive affirmations can improve our own self-confidence as parents. Parenting can be challenging, and self-doubt is natural. But by affirming our abilities, we can foster a sense of empowerment and resilience, allowing us to navigate parenting with greater confidence. Now, let's explore how we can incorporate positive affirmations into our daily parenting routine. One effective way is to create a list of affirmations that resonate with us and align with our parenting goals. These affirmations can be written down or repeated to ourselves regularly, especially during moments of stress or doubt. Additionally, we can involve our children in the process. Encouraging them to create their own positive affirmations can empower them and teach them the importance of self-belief and positive thinking. By practicing affirmations together, we create a supportive and uplifting environment for our entire family. As we wrap up today's episode, it's essential to remember that positive affirmations are not a magical solution to all parenting challenges. However, when practiced consistently and with genuine belief, they can create a positive and nurturing environment for both ourselves and our children Dad Up! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share this new episode of Parenting Pep Talk! One of the most challenging things we can experience as parents is the power struggle with our kids. So how do we avoid the power struggle? This episode will help you as parents avoid this issue. Here are some tips for avoiding power struggles with your child: 1. Set clear and consistent rules: Make sure your child knows what is expected of them and what the consequences will be if they do not follow the rules. 2. Use positive reinforcement: Praise your child for good behavior, rather than focusing only on correcting misbehavior. 3. Avoid arguing or negotiating: If you give in to your child's demands, it can reinforce their belief that they can get what they want through power struggles. Instead, calmly and firmly state your expectations and stick to them. 4. Give your child choices: Giving your child the opportunity to make choices can help them feel more in control and less likely to engage in power struggles. 5. Encourage independent thinking: Encourage your child to solve problems and make decisions on their own, rather than always relying on you to make things happen. 6. Stay calm: It can be tempting to get upset when your child challenges your authority, but try to remain calm and composed. This can help deescalate the situation and prevent it from turning into a power struggle. 7. Be a good role model: Children learn by example, so make sure you model the behavior you want to see from your child. Remember that power struggles are a normal part of child development, and they will likely occur from time to time. The important thing is to stay consistent and use positive discipline strategies to teach your child how to manage their behavior and emotions.
