Our culture loves to celebrate adoption stories - and a lot of state governments put millions into promoting it. But adoptees and birth parents are opening up online about "coming out of the fog" - a term for becoming more openly critical of adoption, or facing the grief within their adoption stories. November is National Adoption Month, and Brittany Luse takes a closer look at how adoption functions in our culture by examining the supply side of adoption - the birth parents. She's joined by Gretchen Sisson, the author of Relinquished: the Politics of Adoption and the Privilege of American Motherhood. They dive deep into the stories told about birth parents, and how our culture decides who deserves to be a parent.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Friends, did you know that November is Foster Care and Adoption Awareness Month and National Adoption Month? A couple years ago I didn't know anything about these, or November's annual Stand Sunday observed by many American churches either. Honestly, I didn't know much about foster care at all. All that changed when several of my friends became foster parents, and I have been on a journey to learn more and support this community ever since. Listen in as I learn from my friend Mandi, a foster and adoptive mom who now works to support foster and adoptive families through an organization called Foster the Family. I can't wait for you to hear about the beauty and hardship weaved into foster care and Mandi's deep compassion and wisdom. Here are some highlights: foster care 101, Mandi's experiences with 18 foster children and 4 adoptions, relationships with foster kids' biological families, and ways you can support and join the foster care community. Mamas, you and I have a unique light to bring to the world to our children and also to other children around us. Some of them may come into our homes for a time or even stay forever. I invite you to think of the children and parents in the foster care world and consider, "How can I share this light that I have with others?" Extra Stuff: TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) is a “training method which offers a way to build attachment as you parent kids from hard places.” Learn more here: Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development. Send us a textAs ya'll probably know by now, Adoption changed our lives forever. Living on the other side of the process, I am able to recall all of the emotions that would rush through our bodies. It isn't for the faint of heart. But for the ones that are truly committed and damned determined to create their family, then strap in. It is a beautiful and scary journey, but in the end... it is magical. Douglas and I are forever grateful to our birthmothers that strapped in with us. It was a rollercoaster of feelings. Feelings that helped us grow, mature, and let go and let God. Each year for our Adoption show I search for inspiring stories that would allow our audience to experience the emotions told by these incredible humans. Gayswithkids.com is where I personally started writing. This platform allows dads from all over the world to connect, learn and grow their own confidence by seeing representation from other gay dads... like Douglas and I! Recently, I found a really inspiring article over on GWK and I had to talk to him.Meet Kevin. He lives in Los Angeles and he is a single dad. He went through the entire process as a single gay man. After 4 years of fostering his son, he was finally able to finalize recently and he wrote about it. I cannot IMAGINE how much grit it took to complete. I highly recommend you listen to this one. And you can follow his family at @therealdadoflosangeles.Then later we welcome back The Real Modern Dads! Doug and Brent Munster live in Atlanta, Ga. We explore the transformative power of adoption with Rita L. Soronen, President and CEO of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Rita shares insights into how foster care adoption can change the lives of children who are seeking permanence and stability. As we celebrate National Adoption Month, we are reminded of the critical need to support vulnerable children. Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's, understood this deeply from his own life experiences, and in 1992 he created the foundation to advocate for children in foster care. As Rita explains, "These children are not someone else's responsibility. They are our responsibility."Rita emphasizes the Foundation's mission to increase adoptions and the ongoing commitment to expanding efforts, not just in the U.S. and Canada, but potentially in Mexico. The Foundation's partnership with the Wendy's Company and its many programs, like National Adoption Day, highlights the importance of celebrating and uplifting the stories of families formed through adoption. "We're not just raising awareness," Rita says, "We are walking families through each step of the adoption process." This message serves as a powerful call to action for individuals, communities, and organizations to step forward and support children in need of a forever family.#NationalAdoptionMonth #FosterCareAdoption #AdoptionAwarenessFind us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

With November being National Adoption Month, we're thrilled to end the month chatting with a guest who knows this topic extremely well, Becky Fawcett. We talked about all things adoption with Becky in this episode. We discussed her personal adoption journey, the adoption process people need to know, costs, and much more. Who is Becky Fawcett? Becky Fawcett is the founder and president of Helpusadopt.org, an equality-based organization that seeks to reduce the financial burden of adoption. After graduating from Franklin & Marshall College, Becky had a successful career in the magazine industry, first for Baltimore magazine and then for Philadelphia magazine as the director of marketing. She then went on to found The Fawcett Group, a full-service public relations and marketing firm. Becky and her husband, Kipp, adopted their first daughter, Jane, in 2005 and their second daughter, Brooke, in 2009. After adopting their first child, Becky and Kipp were so grateful that they had the financial means to adopt that they decided to make a donation to an organization that would help ease another family's financial burden. Sadly, they could not find an adoption grant organization that was based on a mission of equality. To address this need and help all types of families, they founded Helpusadopt.org in 2007. Helpusadopt.org has been featured on CNN, People.com, The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Wall Street Journal, People Magazine, O Magazine, and Good Housekeeping for their groundbreaking work in the world of adoption. Becky lives in Manhattan with her husband, Kipp, and their children, Jane and Brooke. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we chat with Becky all about adoption! Here are several of the questions that we covered: Becky, did you always know you wanted to adopt? We'd love to hear more about your personal adoption story and experience. Please share with us! What were the biggest challenges you faced while going through the adoption process? I've heard from families that the adoption process can be overwhelming. Where do you suggest a family start to explore adoption? What aspects of adoption do you think the general public might be unaware of? Can you walk our audience through a typical adoption process? What is the average cost of adoption? Why is adoption so expensive? What obstacles does the high cost of adoption create for families and children? What advice would you give families who are just beginning to explore adoption options? It was a pleasure chatting with Becky about the adoption journey and hearing her passion and knowledge about such a very special topic. We hope that this episode brings hope and encouragement to families out there who may or may not be considering adoption. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Did you know that 606,031 children passed through the foster care system in 2021? Read that again and let it sit with you a moment. 606,031 kids that deserve the same love just as any other sit, wait and dream of the perfect day.  For 6 months of each of our children's lives we fostered them in order to proceed with their adoptions. The uneasy moments of not being in control, for me, was one of the hardest parts. The stories that I hear from foster parents are absolutely inspirational. Each experience  of unconditional love waits so patiently  on the other side, yearning for the moment to build the family they've always dreamt of having. One of these dreams came from a loving mother in South Florida that has a beautiful family in thanks to our foster care  system. Ann Swearingen recalls her own experience with her partner, Jeff, through the Foster Care System. Listen as she so delicately recollects their own path  of parenthood that  lay before them. Their fear is real, but the love is transcendental and will always win.Next, we welcome Doug Munster, an adoption advocate that helps to run the Georgia Chapter of the Non Profit "GIFT OF ADOPTION". He and his husband, Brent are the proud dads of two beautiful boys through their own journey of adoption. Recently, Doug and his chapter raised over $600,000 that will benefit families in Metro Atlanta and reaching outward into Georgia and in turn was given recognition in Washington DC this summer. Doug's chapter in Georgia has helped 5,000 kids find their forever family! He is doing BIG things in the world of adoption and all of it is so appreciated. Thank you Doug! You can follow all of his sweet families adventures on Social media. Find them @realmoderndadsTo find out more about The Gift of Adoption head over to GIFTOFADOPTION.ORGThank you to our family of amazing sponsors! This mission has been given to the Church, and it is the Church that is to do this work. With November being National Adoption Month, our prayer is that you would come away from this episode with your heart stirred on this topic of adoption. What We Chat about in Today's Episode: ~Info about LifeLine Christian Services, the largest evangelical adoption agency in the country ~The gospel-motivation for the work going on at LifeLine ~How Herbie came to be the President of LifeLine, what led him to first become involved in this work, and what his daily work looks like; why he is passionate about this topic ~The importance of seeking the Spirit on what we personally are called to do in this area ~What being truly pro-life actually is - and how just demanding that there be a birth is not what all we are called to as the Church; the importance of us stepping up and helping these mamas and babies in need ~The importance of advocating for life inside as well as outside the womb ~The problem with being busy and becoming nearsighted, losing sight of what God is actually calling us to do with our days ~The purpose of our lives as believers as not being one of comfort and ease, but of mission ~The call to deny ourselves and pick up our cross so that we can serve others well ~What the state of adoption is in this country and around the world; the number of orphans currently in this world who need a home ~The increase in abortion that we are actually seeing post Roe v. Wade and the reality that conservative states were not even prepared for the overturning;  the work the church still has to do ~Laws, practices, etc. that are leading to this orphan crisis here and around the world; what we as believers can do about this crisis whether or not we adopt ourselves ~The infinite wisdom of God's design for the family and the world at large ~Herbie's insider analysis of where the defense of life movement is, what is coming down the pike, and what part adoption plays in all of this; adoption as a pro-life option ~Talking about abundant life and having a pro-woman stance as a pro-life advocate ~Ways in which the church is dropping the ball in these areas; what we can do to be the hands and feet of Christ; how to make a difference in these areas ~Understanding that having a pro-life stance does not begin at the political or federal level; it starts in your home, with your family, and in your community ~How people can become involved with LifeLine Children's Services ~Being faithful with what is in front of us and the importance of just doing the next right thing ~And more! It's National Adoption Month, and I would be remiss if I didn't talk at least a little bit about adoption—since it has changed our lives in all of the best ways!  But today we're also talking more generally about the God-sized callings that are placed on our lives. It's those things that God asks us to do as a step of faith and a call to obedience. For some of us it's adoption, but for others it's a mission trip, or a financial investment into Kingdom purposes, or even stepping into someone else's story who desperately needs your friendship.  Steve Frissell is with us today, and he's turning the tables a bit to ask me questions about our adoption journey. We are praying you will really be encouraged to chase after the things God is asking you to do right now—using our words as a springboard to encourage you in the things that feel too hard, impractical, or even impossible in this season of life.  So glad you're with us today!   All things Cynthia Pre-Order Life is Messy, God is Good

They discuss the tension of being connected to two places, the necessity of centering adoptees' voices and stories, and ways to honor heritages and birth families. They also dive into the importance of celebrating and submitting to leadership that is not centered on whiteness, as well as the need to reframe the language around adoption so that it is not compared to the gospel. Cam generously shares some of his own journey of self discovery with the Be the Bridge community. And he encourages adoptees to have a community to be able to express their feelings.
