NEW EPISODE RELEASED Click the links below or in the show notes! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share another episode with this guest to have a tough conversation about the struggles his son will soon face. Dr. Steve Johnston is an MD/MBA with a vast understanding of the healthcare system, coupled with real-world experience in building companies, leading teams, & solving complex challenges. His son, Luke, has a rare genetic condition and is slowly going blind. Upon receiving the diagnosis that his son was going blind, nothing has been more important to Steve than championing the mission of A Race Against Blindness: support research & find a cure for retinitis pigmentosa caused by Bardet-Biedel Syndrome. This rare disease known as Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS) is one of many genetic conditions that can cause RP/blindness in young children. His son, Luke, is actively going blind. Thus, the birth of A Race Against Blindness organization. Steve & his wife, Kristina, founded the nonprofit called A Race Against Blindness. But that really only scratches the surface in terms of their motivation. Since learning of Luke's diagnosis , Steve & Kristina have become strongly connected to the rare-diseases community. While rare diseases are actually not unusual, with more than 7,000 diseases classified by the FDA as rare, each one individually often affects only a small number of people. Thus many rare diseases don't receive enough resources to fund research for treatments or possible cures. Steve & Kristina are deeply dedicated to their mission, & their commitment is what will lead them to success. If you would like to learn more about this story, or would like to donate to the cause, please see their website link below or in the show notes. Dad Up! NEW EPISODE RELEASED Click the links below or in the show notes! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share another episode of Parenting Pep Talk. In today's episode, I want to share a question I received from a fan of the show. So I thought we could dive into the topic of building a deep connection with your teenager. As parents, it is crucial to maintain a strong bond with our teenagers, as this connection plays a vital role in their emotional well-being, development, and overall happiness. So, let's jump right in! Segment 1: Understanding the Teenage Mind During adolescence, teenagers undergo significant physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. They are exploring their identities, seeking independence, and experiencing intense emotions. Understand these emotions. Segment 2: Active Listening and Effective Communication Important to Practice genuine interest in their lives, thoughts, and concerns. Encourage open and honest communication by creating a safe and non-judgmental space. Avoid interrupting or dismissing their feelings, and instead, validate their experiences. Segment 3: Quality Time and Shared Activities Spending quality time with your teenager can strengthen your bond and create lasting memories. Find activities that you both enjoy and make time for them regularly. Segment 4: Respect and Trust Building a deep connection requires mutual respect and trust. Respect your teenager's opinions, even if you disagree. Involve them in decision-making processes and show that their input is valued. Avoid excessive control or micromanagement, as it can hinder the development of trust. Segment 5: Empathy and Emotional Support Adolescence can be a challenging time emotionally. Show empathy and provide emotional support for your teenager. Validate their feelings, offer guidance, and help them navigate through difficult situations. Safe to come to you. Building a deep connection with your teenager is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and effort. By practicing active listening, effective communication, spending quality time, and providing emotional support, you can create a strong and lasting bond with your teenager. Remember, the teenage years are a precious time for growth and self-discovery, and your role as a parent is crucial in helping them navigate this transformative stage of life. Dad Up! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share this new episode of Parenting Pep Talk with special guest appearance from my wife, Andrea. Today we talk about the importance of keeping our children's minds sharp and engaged over the summer. Keeping kids engaged in reading over the summer is crucial for their academic and cognitive development. It helps them stay sharp and ready for the upcoming school year. Reading not only enhances their language and literacy skills, but also improves their comprehension, critical thinking, and creativity. It exposes them to new ideas, cultures, and perspectives, expanding their knowledge and understanding of the world. Moreover, reading during the summer prevents the "summer slide," which refers to the loss of academic skills and knowledge during the long break. By making reading a habit, children develop a love for learning and become lifelong readers. It is important for parents and caregivers to encourage and provide opportunities for kids to read, such as visiting libraries, creating a reading routine, and engaging in book discussions. By keeping kids engaged in reading, we empower them to become informed, imaginative, and confident individuals. Dad Up! Welcome to a new episode of The Dad Up Podcast. I'm excited to share this new episode with you. Jessica Hurlbut is a wife, pastor, writer, podcaster, and mom of five—two autistic, two adopted, and one typical teen boy. She and her husband, Greg, are lead pastors of New Testament Church in Upstate New York, and oversee a network of churches in the North Country. Jessica and her husband also host a weekly podcast, Full Spectrum Parent, the only faith-based autism parenting podcast. We all know it's easy to feel overwhelmed and limited by the demands on your life as a parent. But what if the limits on your life could be overcome through the power of the Holy Spirit? Jessica shares stories of her own limited life as a mom of five in her new book Unlimited Motherhood. Jessica Hurlbut ignites hope in the hearts of overwhelmed moms to believe that God has more. Revealing 12 limits that hinder mothers--very real things like exhaustion, distractions, and disillusionment--Jessica empowers you to respond in obedience rather than react in emotions. No matter your circumstances, God sees you, knows you, and has more for your life--even amid the crazy season of parenthood. You can check out her story on her website in the show notes below.
