How can we – and why should we – get to truly understand and know ourselves better? That's one of the questions that executive coach, educator and entrepreneur Robert Louis-Charles unpacks in this episode. Knowing ourselves better, and having a clearer idea of who we ideally would like to be, can help us maximize our confidence, performance and happiness at work and in life. Robert shares his unique approach that marries psychologically-informed strategies for greater self-knowledge with a spiritual outlook to help us identify areas for change and growth that feel meaningful and aligned with our values and higher purpose. What if the fastest way to unlock performance isn't to lead louder, but to host better? We sit down with best-selling author Steve Fortunato to rethink leadership through the lens of hospitality—not the restaurant kind, the human kind. Steve reveals why so much “look at me” leadership creates a vicious cycle of entitlement, and how the host mindset flips the script to “look at you,” building trust, engagement, and shared ownership. We dig into three practical principles you can apply today. First, speak the good: start by changing the inner voice you lead from, then actively name strengths in colleagues, clients, and your company to counter negativity bias and build momentum. Second, honor the other: elevate dignity with real curiosity, mine for the gold, and apply what you learn through personalized recognition, better questions, and tailored support. Third, earn respect, don't expect it: stand in their shoes to understand pressures and constraints, and pursue reconciliation when things go wrong so relationships are restored, not just transactions.Throughout the conversation, Steve connects leadership and hospitality with vivid stories: power dynamics that make customers feel “lucky to be here,” the ecosystem of value that requires giving before getting, and how small hosting rituals—clear openings, inviting voices, pronouncing names right, closing loops—quietly transform culture. We close with a simple loop to keep you improving: celebrate what worked, then pick one thing to refine next time. If you're ready to trade performative heroics for meaningful hosting, this one will change how you run meetings, lead projects, and serve customers.

Are you living by your own design—or following invisible programs that keep you small? In this episode, we sit down with Tom Barnett, a teacher of natural law and former holistic health practitioner whose work challenges the illusions that keep people trapped in fear and limitation.Tom first gained attention in 2020 for his viral video “Can You Catch a Virus?” and has since dedicated his life to helping others break free from conditioned beliefs and reclaim their sovereignty of mind and body. He teaches that life operates by simple, universal principles of cause and effect—and that mastering what we consume, think, and believe transforms how we live.In this conversation, you'll discover:How to recognize and rewrite the “programs” running your life. The mindset shift from have to → choose to.What true authenticity looks like—and why humility is its key.How self-mastery connects to healing, purpose, and legacy. If you're ready to challenge the illusions of safety and step into your own creative power, this episode will open your eyes to what freedom truly means.Quotes: "We are not victims; that's one of the primary fundamentals of natural law of cause and effect, that we are causing the effect. So if that's the case, then we just need to go, Okay, well, if I'm creating that, then I can create it differently, because I'm a Prime Creator.""I consider myself a perpetual student, because one of the things that I do—I've always loved to do, and I think why I was good at academics—is I do love to learn.""Life doesn't give you something that you're not ready for, or you don't have the ability or capacity to have or hold or handle in this life."Actionable Takeaways:Audit your inputs.Examine what you consume—food, media, conversations, and environments. Ask yourself: Is this elevating my energy or draining it? Make one conscious change this week to replace “junk input” with something that nourishes you.Rewrite your internal story.Identify one recurring belief that keeps you stuck (e.g., “I have to do this” or “I can't change”). Journal the opposite truth and read it daily for seven days to begin reprogramming your mindset.Shift from “have to” → “choose to.”Replace every “I have to” statement with “I choose to” or “I get to.” This simple linguistic shift transforms obligation into empowerment and reframes your relationship with daily responsibilities.Identify your inherited programs.Reflect on which habits, fears, or values you've absorbed from family, school, or society that don't truly belong to you. Which of these will you release to become who you really are?Practice stillness and observation.Set aside 10 minutes each day to quiet your mind and listen without reacting. Ask: What part of me is responding—my true self or my programming? Use that awareness to act with intention instead of impulse. Conclusion:Tom Barnett reminds us that freedom begins within. True self-mastery isn't about rejecting the world—it's about understanding the natural laws that govern it and consciously choosing how we engage with them. By questioning the systems that shape our thinking, rewriting our inner stories, and aligning our actions with truth rather than fear, we reclaim authorship over our lives. As Tom emphasizes, every choice is an offer, not an obligation. When we move from reaction to creation, we stop living as victims of circumstance and start living as intentional creators of our reality. The invitation is simple yet profound: step out of the illusion, listen to your inner authority, and live by design—not default.Call to ActionWant to dive deeper into Tom Barnett's work?

People always ask me if my crisis management work is stressful. Not for me. It's where I thrive — drawing upon my natural resourcefulness, decades managing risk and crises for clients, and passion for developing communication strategies. I help my clients by focusing on connections… how they reach their audiences, how their audiences reach them, how my teams and I can facilitate those interactions.I've helped my clients grow and sell companies, acquire firms, improve valuation / stock price, gain market share, manage crises, perfect presentation skills, launch products and the list goes on. When I'm not working directly with clients, I'm growing Castle — developing partnerships, identifying marketing opportunities and building new client relationships. And when I'm not doing that, I'm out in the marketplace, representing Castle and our clients through our dedication to the community. After decades working with companies to build a crisis communications plan or tackle their latest controversy, I've seen it all — national high-profile, high-stakes crises for organizations of all sizes, including corporate, public sector, nonprofit, education and healthcare clients. I've successfully managed sensitive and highly charged crisis communications around data breaches, acts of God, sexual harassment, Title IX discrimination, free speech, leadership misconduct, mergers & acquisitions, workforce reduction, violence & workplace accidents, regulatory action and more.PR is all about third-party credibility – so I must share some of our own accolades. Castle was named a Forbes 2021 Best PR Agency, Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce 2021 Small Business of the Year, PRNEWS‘ Agency Elite Top 100, and is a five-time Boston Business Journal Best Place to Work. I've been honored with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Pinnacle Award for Entrepreneurship, Women's Business Enterprise Hall of Fame Trailblazer Award, Enterprising Women Magazine Enterprising Women of the Year, Women's Enterprise USA Top WBE CEO, Tomorrow's Women TODAY Woman of the Year, WBENC Women's Business Enterprise Star Award, Center for Women and Enterprise Rising Star Award and March of Dimes Franklin Delano Roosevelt Humanitarian Award. I was also named a Boston Business Journal “40 under 40″ (although I would no longer be eligible!).I've had the privilege of speaking at regional and national conferences, including the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Massachusetts, University Risk Management and Insurance Association and the Automotive Public Relations Council. Other speaking engagements include Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Boston Business Journal, Association of American Colleges and Universities, National Association of Independent Schools, Commonwealth Institute, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Center for Women and Enterprise, CBRE Women's Initiative and more.I'm also a contributor to Forbes, an active member of the New England Council and a founding member of the Boston Business Journal Leadership Trust. In 2018, I was appointed by Governor Charlie Baker to the Massachusetts Bay Community College Board of Trustees. For more than 15 years, I have served on the boards of Center for Women and Enterprise and WGBH Corporate Council. I also serve on the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Executive Committee and am on the Executive Committee of the Public Relations Global Network — interacting almost daily with my “sister” (and “brother”) agency principals in every major media market to develop world-class relationships for our clients and teams.

Had an AHA or Insight? Share it:Why do we keep trusting the loudest person in the room instead of the most capable one? We seem drawn to the tall, bold, confident, and the loud, but not always to the wise. I invited Maria Brinck, founder of Zynergy International, and author of The Leadership We Need, to help me unpack this uncomfortable truth. Maria argues we have accepted being led by bullies and that our subconscious bias toward dominance keeps toxic, outdated leadership patterns alive. We explore what happens when masculine energy takes over the world, why empathy is often mistaken for weakness, and what it really takes to build the kind of leadership the future demands

Drawing from the voices of the great Stoics, we examine how societal pressure challenges long-held standards and values. We then uncover the essence of the warrior ethos, rooted in wisdom, justice, fortitude, and temperance, through examples from Gladiator, Naruto, and real-world practice. We dissect leadership in the modern age, contrasting authenticity with performative virtue. From Marcus Aurelius to today's influencers, we reveal how social media often rewards image over integrity, urging a return to genuine strength and disciplined conviction.--------- EPISODE CHAPTERS ---------(0:00:00) - Exploring Virtue and Political Integrity(0:08:56) - Unleashing the Warrior Ethos(0:16:39) - Authenticity and the Warrior Mindset(0:28:37) - Foundational Principles in Combat TrainingSend us a text

Robert's Book: The Compass Within Barriers to Defining Values The Inner Critic Understanding the Inner Compass Decision-Making Frameworks Common Mistakes with Values The Power and Purpose of Personal Values In this episode, I sit down with Bob Glazer, Founder and Chairman of the Board at Acceleration Partners and author of The Compass Within, to explore the vital role personal values play in leadership and life. Bob explains that our values are most visible during moments of discomfort or conflict when our reactions reveal what we truly believe. He encourages leaders to pay attention to tension or frustration as indicators of when a value may be compromised. Through practical examples, Bob illustrates how clearly defined values serve as a compass for better decision-making, stronger relationships, and greater fulfillment both personally and professionally. The Book: Behind The Compass Within Bob shares the inspiration and intent behind his latest book, The Compass Within. The book offers a structured yet personal framework for identifying and defining one's core values. Drawing from years of coaching and collaboration with thousands of leaders, Bob explains how our deepest values often stem from formative life experiences, both the moments that shaped us and the ones that challenged us. Through a blend of storytelling and practical strategy, Bob's work guides readers to uncover their authentic drivers and align their leadership with what truly matters most. His “core validator” system provides a tangible process to ensure values are distinct, actionable, and easy to apply in real life.
In this week's episode of the Do Good to Lead Well podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Lindsay Dodd, the CEO of Cashco Financial, for an enlightening conversation about how to build an award-winning culture. He reveals how purpose and profitability can successfully coexist, emphasizing a people-first mindset that champions dignity, trust, and empowerment. His insights showcase how Cashco Financial has consistently earned recognition as one of Alberta's best workplaces for five consecutive years. You know what no one tells you about being a leader? It's lonely as hell. Everyone looks to you for answers, for calm, for direction — but where do you go when you're running on fumes? Welcome, Pivoter. Let's get real. In this raw and emotional episode, April takes us behind the scenes of Collaborate 2025, where high performers and leaders came together to do something rare — drop their armor. No posturing, no highlight reels, no pretending to “have it all together.” Just truth, connection, and conversations that matter. This is a reflection on what happens when leaders stop performing strength and start sharing it. When we stop leading alone. Key Takeaways Leadership Loneliness Is Real: Even the most successful leaders feel isolated. The myth of “figure it out alone” is what burns us out. Armor Down, Impact Up: True strength comes from vulnerability — not perfection. When we open up, we give others permission to do the same. Behind the Scenes at Collaborate: April shares the real moments from the event — the tears, the breakthroughs, the laughter — that reminded everyone they're not alone in the fight to lead well. Connection Is the 10X Multiplier: The biggest growth isn't from tactics or templates — it's from trusted rooms of peers who see you, challenge you, and lift you up. Redefining Leadership: The strongest leaders aren't the ones who never struggle — they're the ones who create safe spaces for others to be real too. Actionable Items Find Your Room: Surround yourself with people who call you up, not just cheer you on. Real connection beats performative success every time. Check Your Armor: Ask yourself, “Where am I pretending to have it together when I don't?” That's your growth edge. Build Regular Reflection Time: Leadership doesn't just happen in meetings — it happens in the quiet moments where you assess your truth. Model Openness: Your team doesn't need your perfection — they need your humanity. Collaborate 2025 wasn't just an event. It was a reminder that leadership without connection is unsustainable. The strongest leaders know when to lay down the shield, when to say, “me too,” and when to lean in for support. “Drop the mask. Keep the mission. You don't have to lead alone.”
