In Washington state, a law known as Ricky's Law, allows authorities to force people with addiction into treatment. The law is named after Ricky Garcia, whose struggles with drugs and alcohol inspired him and his friend Lauren Davis to push for change. From emergency room visits to suicide attempts, Davis watched as Garcia went through more than 75 emergency visits in just two years. Davis helped spearhead the state's involuntary treatment law and later went on to become a state lawmaker. But does forcing someone into treatment actually work?CBC journalist Julia Wong went to Washington state to find out how the law has been working in practice. In her documentary, Ricky's Law, she speaks to doctors and pa tients who've been through this system. It's a timely conversation as provinces in Canada are considering similar laws.Plus, a look at how New Brunswick ended up making a two-seater sports car in the 1970s called the Bricklin SV-1.Reported by Julia Wong. Produced by Kory Siegers and Liz Hoath / Originally aired on The Current.Storylines is part of the CBC Audio Doc Unit
Alberta is facing a growing drug crisis and a new idea is on the table. The provincial government calls it compassionate intervention. Legislation set to be tabled this spring would allow the province to detain people involuntarily for addiction treatment. A CBC team travelled to Washington state where an involuntary-treatment law is already in place. Producer Kory Siegers and reporter Julia Wong share what it looks like and what they learned.
Ricky Garcia struggled with addiction for years, and fought for laws that would allow people in crisis to be forced into involuntary treatment in his home state of Washington. As ideas around involuntary treatment gain traction in Canada, Julia Wong's documentary Ricky's Law explores how the approach is working south of the border.

I started Convo By Design seven years ago because I saw an opportunity to tell the stories of creators, designers, architects, artists, set decorators and others who change the way we live, build and design. I started recording panels and keynotes from West Week, Fall Market, Legends and of course, WestEdge Design Fair. After I started working with WestEdge co-founder’s Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly, the opportunity presented itself to start producing the stage. For two years now, the Convo By Design Programming Lounge has been a place to share new ideas, engage and explore the stories from inside SoCal's vibrant world of design and architecture. Rapidly, a new class of creators has emerged. These artisans are taking the industry to the next level through the work as well as through the stories they’re telling and the business they're building. They are multi-dimensional. I crafted a panel called Rockstars, Rebels, and Raconteurs to showcase some of these unique personalities. This group included designers Lori Dennis and Ryan Saghian as well as architect, Jean Brownhill. Consider this a blueprint for success and a roadmap for any new creative endeavor. This chat was fun and covers a lot of ground so let’s get to it. Here are some of the topics covered: Who are you? What an interesting question. Do you know? They do. The next topic is one very near and dear to my heart, it too was covered at WestEdge and you will be hearing about it later this year on the podcast. The topic is mentorship. The next topic is connections. So important and you’re going to hear why. You have heard a lot about talk collaborations and you are about to hear more..this is good, really good. Okay, we have covered a lot of ground here. Identity, mentorship, connections, collaborations… You’re about to hear about fear. Not a topic often addressed but so important. Everyone feels it, but everyone responds differently. Here is how this group of rebels handles their fear. From fear to drive and you’ll hear how they are connected. From fear to drive, what could the next subject possibly be but working on the edge… If you are going to change the business, disrupt or whatever you want to call it, you have to find your niche, locate the need, find the audience looking for what you have to offer. From finding the need to maintaining momentum. This is a hard one. Making it to the top is one thing, staying there is another… Finally, it comes down to blazing trails and doing things differently… So there you have it for Rockstars, Rebels, and Raconteurs with Lori Dennis, Jean Brownhill, and Ryan Saghian. This is a blueprint for any creator looking to take their game to the next level. Special thanks to Ryan, Jean, and Lori. Thank you, Megan and Troy, thank you Erika Heet for moderating this conversation, thank you, John McClain, Kevin Isbell, Julia Wong and Nicolette Akiko for designing our stage at WestEdge. Thank you, Walker Zanger, for your support and thank you for listening, without you, there is no Convo By Design. If you haven’t already, please subscribe to the show everywhere you find your favorite podcasts. Until next week, keep creating. #ConvoByDesign #Rockstars #RyanSahgian #JeanBrownhill #LoriDennis #WestEdgeDesignFair
In 2019 I started the Design Influencer and Innovation Group. This is a series of trade only events at Southern California. This gathering was held at the Ornare showroom on Beverly Blvd in West Hollywood. First up is Rozita Nazarian with the benefits and challenges of design showcase houses. Gary Gibson is unique in that he is a designer with his own showroom so he has to be cognizant of what other designers really want as well. Gary also talks about industry events and the challenges of expanding into new categories. Leslie Shapiro Joyal has a unique view on the up cropping of designer workrooms allowing for creators to settle in a space that allows them to craft their own product. She talks about her workroom, her showroom and how she uses this experience to, in turn provide that experience to other designers. She describes it as a “circle in which the ecosystem thrives.” This is Leslie Shapiro Joyal. Josh Borris with Core Development Group addresses the fundamental issue. How can the industry help busy design and architecture professionals. How can companies provide marketing and sales materials to help you along the way. Josh hits some really interesting points. Longtime friend of the show, architect Takashi Yanai. Takashi opened the firm’s San Francisco office. He talks a bit about opening new territories. This is critical for design and architecture firms. Julia Wong talks about design shows and the importance of support for design professionals. Aaron B. Duke shares his thoughts about something that comes up all the time…. The pivot. What happens when you figure out that you need to change the carrier direction to accommodate for live direction? You don’t hear many talk about it in raw, honest terms. Back to the issue of trade shows and inspiration, Nicolette Akiko from Studio Akiko has some strong opinions. I have had the pleasure of working with Nicolette and I value her perspective on establishing a local base for the firm and expanding outward, I think you will too. Laurie Haefele, she is clear on what she needs and wants from the industry. Hey, design trade shows, manufacturers and showrooms… Do you want to know what design pros want from you…. here you go. Wrapping this up is an outsider, for very good reason. Alex Abramian is a freelance journalist who has covered the design and architecture industry for quite some time. This is where trade editorial and design trade meet. And sometimes that meeting is a violent collision. Want a smooth transition? Listen to this from journalist, Alex Abramian. That’s a wrap on this episode of Convo By Design featuring the Design Influencer and Innovator group. A collection of Southern California’s best and brightest in design and architecture. Thank you Rozita, Gary, Laurie, Julia, Josh, Aaron, Takashi, Nicolette and Alex. Thank you Cynthia and the Ornare showroom staff for making us feel so at home in your amazing space. Thank you Snyder Diamond, Vondom, SubZero, Wolf and Cove for your generous support and most of all, thank you for listening, downloading each episode, rating the podcast on iTunes and engaging in social media. You are the absolute best and I truly appreciate you. That is a wrap on this episode of Convo By Design and until next week, keep creating.
This episode provides some important information from BDO Canada when it comes to dealing with your finances. Donna Mihalcheon joins me to talk about a recent study that outlines a number of surprising facts about how Canadians are spending their money. Instagram and Facebook have made some changes to what young teenagers can see. Last month, they both put in place a policy that will block, and in some instances remove, content that promotes weight loss or cosmetic procedures to users under 18 years old. I talk with Dr. Julia Wong of the BC Children's Hospital about why this is an important step for these platforms to make, but it doesn't mean parents and guardians should stop concerning themselves with body issues. And to end off the program I chat with Susie Rieder about Electric Vehicle charging and some of the misconceptions that exist for people when it comes to the costs of charging and how readily available charging infrastructure is.

Convo By Design is recorded live from the SubZero Wolf Living Kitchen Studio. You heard that right, Convo By Design has a new sponsor, SubZero Wolf Cove. The Living Kitchen Studio will be recording from the studios in Los Angeles and surrounding areas bringing you the stories of amazing design and architecture. Speaking of which, this week we have a great conversation from the Convo By Design stage at the WestEdge Design Fair. You might recall that the stage was designed by Julia Wong featuring a one of a kind, CXD Media Desk, now available to designers who are looking to build a one of a kind space for podcasters, YouTubers or the home office. If you are interested, please send an email to ConvoByDesign@Outlook.com. So, this conversation, called Silicon Beach - Design Hub of Innovation is just that, a deep dive into the tech community, the design taking place and how that is affecting LA’s vibrant design and architecture scene as a whole. The Westside coastal cities of Los Angeles, dubbed Silicon Beach, have become home to burgeoning tech start-ups and giants alike. The demand for office space and housing has grown considerably. Techies don’t want to live, work and play like everyone else. Their approach to their surroundings 24/7 mirrors their company philosophies, in which innovation is key. Thus, many turn to architects and designers who are breaking the mold in their own fields to create spaces including restaurants, offices and homes that are beyond ‘smart.’ This conversation is moderated by: Jerri Levi, Publisher, FORM magazine and features, architects, Joe Spierer, Anthony Poon, designer Chris Barrett, and Christopher Coldoff, studio director and principal at Gensler. Also of note, this is the relaunch of FORM: Pioneering Design. The magazine is back with a fresh approach to the art and ideas behind, around and surrounding the architecture of Los Angeles. I am proud to be a contributing editor to the magazine and thrilled for Jerri in this endeavor. Welcome back, FORM. If you like this episode of the podcast, and I hope that you do. This past weekend was the WestEdge Design Fair and once again, Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly have outdone themselves. I have been so fortunate to be associated with Troy and Megan at WestEdge. This is my favorite design event because it is really, as Troy and Megan have called it, “the anti-trade show”. Not that shows for the trade are bad, they are great. This one is presented differently and having worked with them for so many years, they try to give their attendees something new and different. In that spirit, I wanted to do something unique as well and for Convo By Design, this was a huge endeavor. We were the presenting partners for the Programming Lounge and there were really two sides to this. The programming side and the design side. For the design, I turned to a trusted friend and incredible talent, Julia Wong of Julia Wong Designs. Julia did something fantastic with this space, not the least of which was collaborating with me to create a custom podcast desk that is completely mobile, dripping with luxury detail and designed for podcasters, YouTubers, home office communications as well as a great place for family based digital communications in a clean space with hidden wires and enough room for the whole family or team. It is also available for purchase with a ton of customized details. For more information, email the show convobydesign@outlook dot com and reference “Podcast Desk” in the subject line. Okay, so this episode is special. It is a kickoff from the event and features the first conversation of the event featuring acclaimed designer Lori Dennis, Nicholas Gawith of Publicis.Sapient and Ivette Serrano of Lamps Plus. We talked about brand development for creatives. I wanted this group to cover the topic from the single designer to that of a global brand and this group delivered. After the stage segment ended, we broke up into groups and audience members became participants in a workshop with the panelists, it was special. Thank you to WestEdge Design Fair for allowing me the latitude to experiment, thank you to ASID Los Angeles for presenting this conversation and thank you to Lori, Nick and Ivette for their time and insights. And a huge thank you to you for listening as well as those that came to WestEdge Design Fair and participated in the events in the Programming Lounge presented by Convo By Design. I hope you enjoy this episode.
