Brittany and Sam are joined by Sarah Nuse and Megan Reilly of Tippi Toes Dance Franchising to talk all things empowerment, mission, and owning your authenticity. This dynamic sister duo does not disappoint as they share their secrets to growth and success.
Megan Reilly is the COO and co-owner of Tippi Toes®, an international franchisor of children's dance. For more than a decade, Megan has helped franchise owners build and grow their own businesses around the world.Megan and her sister/business partner Sarah appeared on Shark Tank, where they were awarded a deal by Mark Cuban. They decided to decline the deal and grow their business on their own, and have since built 35 franchises, written and published children's music that's hit the Billboard Charts, and reached number 1 on iTunes. She is also the creator and host of the Who Is Your Momma Podcast, where she speaks to the mothers of some of the world's most successful CEOs, athletes, and entertainers. This Episode's Heavy-hitter's:Tippi Toes was actually founded as the result of a college football game. Megan's sister Sarah was working as a waitress and wanted the day off to go to a game. When her boss told her she wouldn't have a job when she came back, she called their bluff and got fired. All at once she had to keep paying her car note– and Tippi Toes was born.Megan actually became a licensed dietician even though she knew early on that she wanted to grow Tippi Toes with her sister. Her education and certification served as a safety net that allowed her to pursue Tippi Toes with full-force, knowing that she would always be able to find a job if she needed it.Megan's family actually applied for Tippi Toes to appear on Shark Tank without her knowing. Although she ended up not taking the deal that Mark Cuban offered because they weren't able to negotiate agreeable terms, she remarks on Cuban's receptiveness and communication throughout the process.Franchising was never necessarily the goal for Tippi Toes, but after a trip to the West Coast that didn't go as planned, someone recommended that they franchise and the wheels started turning. On her podcast while speaking with Sarah Blakley's mom, she made a realization about promoting creativity with her kids by creating structured time to always find something to do when they tell her that they're bored. For more, check out https://www.tippitoesdance.com/ and her podcast, Exclusively on the FREE BYLR RADIO APPIf you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review: https://ratethispodcast.com/thepozcast#thePOZcast is brought to you by our friends at Interseller – the prospecting + outreach platform of recruiters and sellers. This week we're talking Personal Branding in Franchising. Why is it critical? How can our personal traits break down some walls with our professional contacts? How can we stop holding ourselves back from sharing something real about ourselves? In the influencer age, it's not your elevator pitch, but the content stream that matters. And, who has a great personal brand? We're naming names! Today's Rock Star panel: Emily George of Franchise Business Review, Danessa Itaya of Bio-One, Ingrid Schneider of Stay In Your Lane, and Thomas Scott of Home Run Franchises. Thanks CareerPlug, Serviceminder, Hughes, and Franchise Hire. Shout outs to Kater Danford, Brooke Janousek, Megan Reilly, Greg Nathan, John DeHart, Angela Coté, and Susan Beth.

Three fan girls, just fanning out. This week Megan Reilly joins us, otherwise known as Few Cans. We talk about BBL's, being noticed and in Podge's case forgetting meeting. What a show.
We had Megan Reilly on The Porch to talk about her journey to success and "Who is Your Momma" a podcast shining the light on the women that raised extraordinary people! Main ideas from this episode: Our Fairy Godmother is not coming. We will not be escorted to our dreams, we have to earn them. The missing ingredient to success is often WHO not WHAT. If you want to catapult your career, take the risk and get around people you deeply admire. "Do something you love so you never work a day in your life" is B.S. - Do something you're passionate about so that you enjoy the journey! You will work hard, and you will spend years in the quiet preparing if you want to do something great, so make sure you enjoy the process. We each have an emotional oven that can be cranked to 450 or lowered down to 150. We always have the power to move the temperature in that oven to save our energy. Knowing when to take a break (10:37) It can be easy to get into the routine of working to build your business but one of the hardest things for business owners can be knowing when to take a break. Erik and Megan discuss what their own tells are. Starting Tippi Toes (12:25) Megan shares the story of her sister, Sarah, starting Tippi Toes. After losing her waitressing job, the idea to go into schools and teach dance sprang into Sarah’s mind. Megan joined soon after. When did the business take off? (15:15) With Megan still in school and earning a degree in nutrition, Sarah was doing Tippi Toes full time. It was at that point both Megan and Sarah realized the business was taking off. They spent the next 10 years building up the brand across the country before opening their first official franchise. Franchising the business (19:56) After failing to create a television show, someone pointed out franchising the business was a viable option. Megan opens up about their process, from hiring a consultant to help set it up to spending a full year working with just one franchisee to ensure their processes were correct and well tested. Shark Tank (24:29) Megan and Sarah went on Shark Tank to pitch their television show but quickly found the panel to be far more interested in their business. Megan shares her belief on whether their advice to drop the show was correct. Preparing for Shark Tank (26:48) Megan talks about her experiences preparing for the show, including some of the things she studied for. What she learned on Shark Tank (29:04) Megan and Erik discuss some of the lessons learned after appearing on Shark Tank, including the confidence gained from being so prepared. Erik opens up about how he prepares (or sometimes doesn’t prepare) for each show. Deal or no deal (31:30) Despite agreeing to a deal with Mark Cuban on the show, Megan explains how some issues with contract language stopped everything right in its tracks. Why did they want to make a deal (35:09) Megan talks through some of the reasons she went on the show and wanted to make a deal in the first place. Where is Tippi Toes now (36:46) Megan and her sister have expanded Tippi Toes to 35 domestic franchises and another franchise in China. She also talks about the difficulties of the business through the pandemic and how they’ve helped their franchisees. Who is your mama podcast (41:02) Erik and Megan talk about her podcast, which talks to the mothers of some important and high-profile people, including major brand CEOs. I started Convo By Design seven years ago because I saw an opportunity to tell the stories of creators, designers, architects, artists, set decorators and others who change the way we live, build and design. I started recording panels and keynotes from West Week, Fall Market, Legends and of course, WestEdge Design Fair. After I started working with WestEdge co-founder’s Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly, the opportunity presented itself to start producing the stage. For two years now, the Convo By Design Programming Lounge has been a place to share new ideas, engage and explore the stories from inside SoCal's vibrant world of design and architecture. Rapidly, a new class of creators has emerged. These artisans are taking the industry to the next level through the work as well as through the stories they’re telling and the business they're building. They are multi-dimensional. I crafted a panel called Rockstars, Rebels, and Raconteurs to showcase some of these unique personalities. This group included designers Lori Dennis and Ryan Saghian as well as architect, Jean Brownhill. Consider this a blueprint for success and a roadmap for any new creative endeavor. This chat was fun and covers a lot of ground so let’s get to it. Here are some of the topics covered: Who are you? What an interesting question. Do you know? They do. The next topic is one very near and dear to my heart, it too was covered at WestEdge and you will be hearing about it later this year on the podcast. The topic is mentorship. The next topic is connections. So important and you’re going to hear why. You have heard a lot about talk collaborations and you are about to hear more..this is good, really good. Okay, we have covered a lot of ground here. Identity, mentorship, connections, collaborations… You’re about to hear about fear. Not a topic often addressed but so important. Everyone feels it, but everyone responds differently. Here is how this group of rebels handles their fear. From fear to drive and you’ll hear how they are connected. From fear to drive, what could the next subject possibly be but working on the edge… If you are going to change the business, disrupt or whatever you want to call it, you have to find your niche, locate the need, find the audience looking for what you have to offer. From finding the need to maintaining momentum. This is a hard one. Making it to the top is one thing, staying there is another… Finally, it comes down to blazing trails and doing things differently… So there you have it for Rockstars, Rebels, and Raconteurs with Lori Dennis, Jean Brownhill, and Ryan Saghian. This is a blueprint for any creator looking to take their game to the next level. Special thanks to Ryan, Jean, and Lori. Thank you, Megan and Troy, thank you Erika Heet for moderating this conversation, thank you, John McClain, Kevin Isbell, Julia Wong and Nicolette Akiko for designing our stage at WestEdge. Thank you, Walker Zanger, for your support and thank you for listening, without you, there is no Convo By Design. If you haven’t already, please subscribe to the show everywhere you find your favorite podcasts. Until next week, keep creating. #ConvoByDesign #Rockstars #RyanSahgian #JeanBrownhill #LoriDennis #WestEdgeDesignFair
This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra interviews Megan Reilly, the Chief Operating Officer at Tippi Toes — a children’s dance business that has been featured on ABC’s Shark Tank and whose original music has made a splash on both Billboard and iTunes music charts. For over 20 years, Megan has found joy in introducing young children to dance through her company, and since its founding, Tippi Toes has established 30 franchises around the US, with plans to go international. Megan understands that entrepreneurship is difficult, and for those that choose to venture down this alternate path, having a passion for your art is key to success. On the podcast, Megan describes why she believes in the mission of her company, how Tippi Toes started with only a dream (and very limited funding), and how other entrepreneurs can find success from day one of their businesses. Moving Quotes: “If we can get kids to love dance when they’re little and have a positive experience, then it can hopefully be a part of their life for a long time." “If you have a [business] framework that you set early on before there’s any emotion involved, it’s going to save you so much in the long run." “Find yourself. Find your value. Find the places that you really shine. And be as true to that as you can, and you will find success… There’s always a place for you if you’re being original and true to who you are." “There’s opportunity for everyone if you’re hustling to find it." “[In entrepreneurship], you have to really care about or enjoy the work that you’re about to do. Because if you’re going to be an entrepreneur, there’s going to be work." “If you try to think too far down the road, you’re going to get lost. Sometimes you just have to think, ‘What is the best thing that I can do today?’" Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 2:57: Megan explains how dance was engrained in her from a very young age and how teaching dance eventually became her day job. 5:39: Megan describes her company — Tippi Toes — and the philosophy behind her company. 7:56: Reilly speaks to some of the lessons that Tippi Toes attendees gather from their dance classes and how these lessons carry over into non-dance aspects of life. 14:22: Megan reflects on the early days of entrepreneurship and shares a couple of practical ways that business owners can succeed. 17:49: Reilly shares her favorite and least favorite aspects of entrepreneurship. 20:04: Reilly discusses what could be next for Tippi Toes, including a few ways to achieve her goal of becoming a household name. 23:11: Reilly describes being featured on the hit reality show Shark Tank and the true story behind the deal she reached with Mark Cuban. 26:53: Megan names some of her role models and how, in a way, books and podcasts have served as role models for her in entrepreneurship. 30:04: Megan gives some practical advice around being in business with close friends and family members. 32:17: Megan shares some encouraging wisdom for those dancers who may not have progressed onto a professional level. I thought about making this one long episode and thought better of it. You are busy and don’t have time for a three hour production. This is part two of our 200th episode retrospective. You heard from some remarkable designers, architects, set decorators and chefs. I wanted to share another side of the podcast in part two. A series of creatives that don’t necessarily fit into a specific category when talking about design and architecture. The Triforium is a public art project that had seen better days in 2016. I met the people trying to save it, members of the Triforium project including members of the Portland based band Yacht… Claire Evans and Jona Becholt. They are bringing this amazing musical sculpture back to life… Speaking of finding new passions. Jihan Zencirli of Geronimo Balloons explains how taking an idea and building a business out of it completely changed her life! Then there are the fine artists who found their calling and built life around it. Artist like Hunt Slonem. What is art without likeminded souls to share it with? Haily Zaki is the co-founder of the LA Design Festival. A showcase for LA’s creatives from virtually every discipline. Haily is smart, crazy talented and driven. Speaking of remarkable events. Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly of the WestEdge Design Fair have put together a world class design and architecture focused event. They do so much to help connect the industry. This is a recap from 2015. Troy and Megan talk about the origins of the show. This leads me to the ideas we need to talk about that aren’t always easy. Emile Nicolaou is an intellectual property attorney. Why should we be hearing from him? Because he is crazy smart and if you listen to what he tells you, you can protect your ideas. That doesn’t mean you can keep them from getting stolen… it means you know what your options are. Choosing not to defend your intellectual property is a choice, not knowing your rights is a crime… Now, some random quotes that I really enjoyed and I think you will as well. Here is architect, Anthony Poon… Designer and showroom owner, Patrick Dragonette… Just for fun, this is a clip from episode number one from 2014 with artist Douglas C. Bloom… This seems like a good time to share some of the things that have made an impact on me after doing this for five years. And keep in mind, I am neither a designer, nor and architect, not a chef or set decorator. However, I have produced design houses, hosted design industry events, published thousands of hours of content, both my own for Convo By Design as well as that for some of the biggest names in design. Because of this, here are some of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned. 1. Say “yes”. 2. Be open to new ideas, even if they are completely opposite to your own. 3. Collaborate whenever possible. 4. Experiment. Try something different. 5. Mix metals. 6. Use that color, you know the one. You can always re-paint, re-cover and re-design. 7. Take your intellectual property rights as well as those of others seriously. Choosing not to act is still a choice, know your options. 8. Ask more questions. 9. Listen to the inner voice. 10. Know your value. 11. Demonstrate the same level of responsibility you ask of others. 12. Change the conversation. 13. Tell your story everywhere you can. 14. Be your brand. Live it. 15. Be authentic. 16. Stress is pointless, it’s all going to work out. I have also benefitted from learning about the superpowers of others… My favorite… Architects see the minute details and plan for all potential outcomes Designers have creativity oozing from every pore Set decorators don’t say ‘no’. They are Macgyver like in their abilities to create options and fabricate ideas Chefs are truly creative warriors who literally battle using knives Trade Show Producers see the direction the business is going and try to hit it at a future point, not the present
This past weekend was the WestEdge Design Fair and once again, Troy Hanson and Megan Reilly have outdone themselves. I have been so fortunate to be associated with Troy and Megan at WestEdge. This is my favorite design event because it is really, as Troy and Megan have called it, “the anti-trade show”. Not that shows for the trade are bad, they are great. This one is presented differently and having worked with them for so many years, they try to give their attendees something new and different. In that spirit, I wanted to do something unique as well and for Convo By Design, this was a huge endeavor. We were the presenting partners for the Programming Lounge and there were really two sides to this. The programming side and the design side. For the design, I turned to a trusted friend and incredible talent, Julia Wong of Julia Wong Designs. Julia did something fantastic with this space, not the least of which was collaborating with me to create a custom podcast desk that is completely mobile, dripping with luxury detail and designed for podcasters, YouTubers, home office communications as well as a great place for family based digital communications in a clean space with hidden wires and enough room for the whole family or team. It is also available for purchase with a ton of customized details. For more information, email the show convobydesign@outlook dot com and reference “Podcast Desk” in the subject line. Okay, so this episode is special. It is a kickoff from the event and features the first conversation of the event featuring acclaimed designer Lori Dennis, Nicholas Gawith of Publicis.Sapient and Ivette Serrano of Lamps Plus. We talked about brand development for creatives. I wanted this group to cover the topic from the single designer to that of a global brand and this group delivered. After the stage segment ended, we broke up into groups and audience members became participants in a workshop with the panelists, it was special. Thank you to WestEdge Design Fair for allowing me the latitude to experiment, thank you to ASID Los Angeles for presenting this conversation and thank you to Lori, Nick and Ivette for their time and insights. And a huge thank you to you for listening as well as those that came to WestEdge Design Fair and participated in the events in the Programming Lounge presented by Convo By Design. I hope you enjoy this episode. Noah started NoPro when he decided that he wanted to find out more about the world of Immersive, and found there was no newsletter to follow. Years later he runs the definitive Guide to Immersive Entertainment in newsletter and deep-dive, long-form podcast format. He also records his show in our studio. We talk about the Ghost Ship fire, the world-changing Tension Experience, the fertile grounds for creation in LA, what Immersive Theatre is and how the term is abused, Think Tank's Trap House show, the paradigm-shifting advancements in VR, and the most important things that have happened in these worlds. If you don't know what Immersive is, you're in for a major lesson on what is in theory the most impacting art form in the world. If you do know what Immersive is, then you know Noah and you're excited to listen to this episode already. 3:51 - Introduction 5:57 - How do you feel about coming off haunt season? 6:41 - Noah’s thoughts on soul searching 8:21 - Noah’s day job with journalism, art and conflict with politics 8:51 - Jacob and Noah discuss the fire in Oakland http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/12/12/us/oakland-warehouse-ghost-ship-fire.html?_r=0 11:10 - Patricks thoughts on Facebook arguments 12:51 - Fuck Donald Trump 13:51 - Noah gives his thoughts on the Oakland fire and how it effected the people around him and the art world in general 17:01 - http://www.eastbaytimes.com/2016/12/06/oakland-fire-mayor-announces-1-7-million-grant-to-help-artists/ 17:36 - Read more about the Arts District development: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/arts/la-et-cm-arts-district-megaproject-20161210-story.html 18:51 - Noah discusses how the Los Angeles Arts District is changing and shifting while real artists are being pushed out 21:47 - http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-frank-gehry-project-20161101-story.html 22:41 - Patricks thoughts on the Oakland fire and what he thinks the number one reason DIY spaces get shut down 29:27 - “The problem is there is a lot of people out there with misinformation.” 36:18 - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-no-proscenium-podcast/id993356795?mt=2 https://twitter.com/NoProscenium 36:51- Bryon Bishop articles http://www.theverge.com/2016/11/17/13664940/the-walking-dead-robert-kirkman-delusion-virtual-reality-series http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/15/13292402/delusion-his-crimson-queen-interactive-play-jon-braver-interview http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/29/13466072/haunted-houses-halloween-immersive-theater-los-angeles http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/15/13294448/future-of-fear-haunted-houses-immersive-horror-halloween http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/30/13115910/tension-experience-ascension-haunted-house-escape-room-maze-bousman http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/22/13364882/escape-rooms-the-basement-trap-house-la-adam-milicevic-interview 37:42 - Noah Nelson breaks down what Immersive theater is 40:46 - http://www.traphouse.la 41:21 - http://sleepnomorenyc.com/#share http://www.thenshefell.com http://speakeasysociety.com/the-speakeasy-society http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/herocomplex/88578209-132.html http://www.capitalwperformance.com http://www.enterdelusion.com 42:16 - https://medium.com/@noahjnelson 44:31 - Patricks thoughts on Immersive theater 48:51 - Jacob talks about fearing the spotlight 52:49 - http://aureliafriedland.com/ 56:01 - https://www.lytro.com 57:33 - Noah explains what the new Cinema camera is, what it can do and how it ties in with VR.
