After three decades and seven previous cinematic outings, super agent Ethan Hunt clocks in for, what is said be, his final mission. This week the Joes pass on Lilo and Stitch and instead check out Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. Does this newest entry in the venerable action thriller franchise break out of the time tested mold of, a world threatening McGuffin, death-defying stunts, and lots of Tom Cruise running? SPOILER. No, not so much. Does it do an exceptional job of staying in its lane, even while raising the stakes, and looking amazingly good doing it? Again SPOILER, yes, yes it does. Final Mission (Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), S4 E9) was recommended by Tsuyoto Wolfe (They/Them), who said: I have so many favorites I thought of recommending. But I was also inspired to find the joy in one I hadn't liked before. When Netflix started streaming Star Trek series back in 2011, I would wtch through TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT, then start over again with TNG. I would skip most of season 1 and 2, as well as a few later episodes. For my recommendation, I went back to the ones I skipped and I rewatched TNG: Final Mission. I had chocked it off as a filler episode with Wesley being annoying. But I found more in it, it a transition from Wesley fanboying over Picard, to seeing him vulnerable, to taking the responsibility for both their lives. The alien shuttle captain still feels like a thin character meant only to be fodder for Wesley's growth, but I appreciate the episode more now.Final Mission first aired on November 19, 1990, written by story by Kacey Arnold-Ince, teleplay by Kacey Arnold-Ince & Jeri Taylor, and directed by Corey AllenWesley sets off on his final mission with the Enterprise accompanied by Picard. Dr. Michael Roberto is the Trustee Professor of Management at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI. He joined the tenured faculty at Bryant after serving for six years on the faculty at Harvard Business School. He has also has been a Visiting Associate Professor of Management at New York University's Stern School of Business. His research focuses on decision making, teamwork, and leadership. He has published three books, the latest of which is titled Unlocking Creativity (Wiley, 2019), Why Great Leaders Don't Take Yes For An Answer (2nd edition published in 2013), and Know What You Don't Know (published in 2009). He also has developed three Great Courses lecture series, the best-selling Everest Leadership and Team Simulation, and the award-winning Columbia's Final Mission multi-media case study about the 2003 space shuttle accident. Dr. Roberto has taught in the leadership development programs and consulted at a number of firms including Mars, Deloitte, Google, Target, Apple, FedEx, Disney, Morgan Stanley, IBM, Wal-Mart, Amica, and Textron. He's also presented at numerous government organizations including the FBI, NASA, Joint Special Operations Command, the Air War College, and West Point. He received an A.B. with honors from Harvard College in 1991. He earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1995, graduating as a George F. Baker Scholar. This week, we yell about how bad Wesley's send off from the main cast of TNG is.

Let's all sing "Say Goodbye to Wes Crusher" to the tune "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" by Billy Joel. Or not. The meter doesn't really match up, kinda like how this episode's plot doesn't match the gravitas of Wesley's final episode. Picard wants Wesley to come with him on some cockamamie miner's quarrel mission right before the boy is to ship out to Starfleet Academy. They've been dangling this for years, but now he's finally out of the picture. Jimmie couldn't be happier. But then the shuttlecraft they're on crashes in the desert and Wesley has to tricorder his way out of things while Picard actually tells him nice things for once. Too bad the old man waited until he was literally dying to do so. Oh, and there's a gruff old(er) captain too. It's a mess. Enjoy! Riker will have to grow old eventually people, let's get it over with. Here the crew jumps 16 years into the future but Riker's son recreates the Enterprise slightly imperfectly. Peace with the Romulans? Ferengi ensigns? Marrying a simulation? Well, in sci-fi, anything is possible. The writing here goes out of its way to feel original, and the performances by Frakes and guest kid Chris Demetral as Jean-Luc Riker.
