From the Bible God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:28 Adam made love to [yada] his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Genesis 4:1 May your fountain be blessed,     and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer—     may her breasts satisfy you always,     may you ever be intoxicated with her love. Proverbs 5:18-19 [He] I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride;     I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey;     I have drunk my wine and my milk. [Friends] Eat, friends, and drink;     drink your fill of love. Song of Songs 5:1 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:7-9 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. Genesis 2:25 For your Maker is your husband— the Lord Almighty is his name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. Isaiah 54:5 As a young man marries a young woman, so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:5 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:31-32 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. You don't want to leave your marriage to chance. You want to design an intentional marriage, but how? Listen to Kevin Thompson in today's episode My marriage isn't perfect. Ryan and I aren't perfect. We struggle and get frustrated with each other. AND ALSO, we work on the relationship that we have. We are bound and determined to remember that before we were mom and dad, we were Ryan and Jill, two fun, Jesus-loving people who thought the other person was too awesome to get away. As much as we've messed up, we are also devoted to being intentional with each other and our relationship. Intentional about chatting about our days and stressors after the girls have gone to bed. Intentional about hanging out together doing something fun. Intentional about dreaming about the future when we are empty nesters. I can think of no one better to speak about being intentional and designing your marriage on purpose than today's guest, Kevin A. Thompson.  In today's episode, you'll receive practical strategies and anchoring truths for receiving grace by learning how to design an intentional marriage. You'll learn: How to create the marriage you want, Three questions to help you figure out how healthy your marriage is, And how to move toward a healthy marriage. Ever feel like you're not a good mom? That somebody -- anybody -- could raise your kids better than you are doing right now? Do you sometimes feel like you're The Worst because you angry, frustrated, and easily annoyed? Those feelings are so familiar to every mom who has ever lived. So let's tune in to what is true. Let's remind ourselves of these facts: God delights in the fact that He made you a mother. God didn't create the law of Good Mom. God knows your desire + your fears. Key Quotes God already knows all you've done. But don't you remember these sins are forgiven? That they were nailed to the tree and you bear them no more? This includes the mom-guilt.  You fear you're not good enough. Who said you had to be enough? God alone is good, and He alone is enough.  Mama, you're going to drop the ball.  At some point, you'll forget to pick up a kid somewhere. You'll send him to school without lunch. You'll give bad advice. You'll lose your temper. And God's grace redeems it all. God is the One who dreamed up the idea of parenting and created you to be your child's parent. Do you think He will leave you on your own?  Motherhood is a divine opportunity for Him to come alongside you, to love you, and for you to turn to Him because you feel so utterly not-enough. You're not The Worst. You're fully loved. You're not failing. You're My favorite. You're a very good mom.  Mentioned in the Podcast Inner Critic Challenge Previous Episodes Episode #66: How your Enneagram type impacts your parenting  Episode #67: Easy and practical ways to give your kids grace  Episode #68: How to create a family shaped by grace in a conversation with Gary Morland  Episode #69: How to parent out of love, not fear with Kevin A. Our guest today is Kevin A. Thompson, the lead pastor at Community Bible Church in western Arkansas, speaks at marriage and parenting conferences, and has authored three books, the most recent one titled Happily: 8 Commitments of Couples Who Laugh, Love & Last. In Happily, you start by talking about how we tend to think happy or unhappy marriages are a product of luck or unspoken rules like marrying the right person. We've also heard this with the idea of sexual compatibility. What do y’all think about that idea? You have eight commitments outlined in Happily, but one stuck out to me in particular about how we can misuse apathy and aggression in marriage. How do spouses misuse apathy and aggression when dealing with sex in their marriage? Kevin, you've been bold on your blog about how women should be treated with respect, speaking for #MeToo and other issues. We've also talked about that here. But how can wives get husbands to understand their experiences with harassment and abuse without seeming like we’re man-bashing? You’re a pastor, and while you can’t speak for all the others, we get this question sometimes and wonder how you’d answer: Why don’t pastors preach and teach more about sex? What if a wife is experiencing sexual issues in her marriage? How should she approach her male pastor, and what safeguards should be in place? Kevin A. Thompson’s book is Happily: 8 Commitments of Couples Who Laugh, Love & Last, and check out his previous marriage book, Friends, Partners, and Lovers and his blog. Blessed are those who mourn,     for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,     for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,     for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful,     for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart,     for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers,     for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,     for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.'" – Matthew 5:3-10 "Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
