In order to grow as disciples, families need to develop a culture of discipleship in their homes. However, the simple truth of the matter is that a lot of parents are intimidated by the notion of being the primary spiritual leaders for their kids and teenagers. As ministry leaders, we have the opportunity to encourage them to embrace their role, and we can paint a picture of discipleship at home that is actually attainable. As parents, we need to own our God-given role as lead discipler and maybe even consider developing a different picture of what it means to disciple kids and teens. Parents and ministry leaders don't have to have all the answers or be professors of theology. We simply need to be authentically walking with Jesus and invite our kids and teens to join us in doing the same. That's what discipleship looks like. On this episode of the M2P podcast, the team sits down with Heather Quiroz to discuss a different way to lead ourselves, our kids, and our teenagers—the way in which Jesus led His own disciples. Heather is a gifted author, teacher, and speaker with over fifteen years of ministry experience. She turned her passion for teaching and sharing the Jewish roots of the Christian faith into founding First Century Youth Ministry with the goal of inspiring youth workers, leaders, and families to become grounded in the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and, in doing so, have a deeper love for the whole Bible. When she's not writing, speaking, or leading trips to Israel, Heather stays busy sharing about her book (First-Century Youth Ministry: A Look Back For The Way Forward In Youth Ministry Discipleship), leading coaching cohorts, hosting episodes of The First-Century Youth Ministry Podcast, working at a staff consultant with Ministry Architects, or pouring herself into her first and greatest ministry of wife to Rodrigo and mom to their daughter, Adah. Join us as Heather talks to us about the ways Jesus walked with His followers in the first century, how authentic discipleship happened then, and as she shares about some great, but simple practices we can implement in our lives and ministry. Take a listen and share the podcast with your friends.
In today's episode, we had the pleasure of chatting with Mark DeVries, the co-founder of the Ministry Architects and the Center for Youth Ministry Training. Mark brings a wealth of experience, having served as the Associate Pastor for Youth and Their Families at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville for 28 years. He joked with us that he is a Youth Minister who is about to enter into Medicare. We are excited to share with you his insights and experiences in youth ministry. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in his ministry career, Mark opens up about facing burnout in the early 2000s. He emphasizes the crucial need for ministry leaders to have a coach or spiritual director, saying: "I often say to our staff, if you are a coach and you do not have a coach, you are a hypocrite. You don't really believe in coaching; you just believe in your job." Mark delves into his exploration of systems using the Edwin Friedman Model, highlighting the significance of addressing underlying system issues rather than merely dealing with surface-level content problems. Drawing on a powerful metaphor, Mark encourages the creation of an "island of viral health" within an organization. He suggests that even in challenging environments, leaders can architect a healthy culture for their ministry. We are confident that you will discover many, many nuggets of wisdom in this insightful conversation with Mark DeVries. Each week, we ask our guest to highlight an organization that is doing good work. Mark talks about a local organization in Nashville, the Presbyterian Latinx Ministry Fund, which provides ESL, food pantry, and other support to Nashville's Latinx community.
Welcome to a brand new season of Transforming Engagement, the Podcast! This time, we're diving deep into a topic that's been a long time coming – Youth & Campus Ministry Burnout. We open this season with a special guest, Matt Wiggins, who sparked our journey into the world of youth and campus ministry burnout. It began when he came across our Clergy Burnout Report during Season 2 and reached out. Matt had an important question: What about the unique challenges faced by leaders working with the younger generation, those often nonordained, part-time, or volunteer youth ministry leaders? Youth ministry can be a revolving door, with an average staffing turnaround of just 18 months. People step into these leadership roles for various reasons – a stepping stone to their next calling, a deep-seated passion, or sometimes a blend of both. This season, we'll be delving into the distinct challenges that leaders in youth and campus ministry encounter. From a professional standpoint, they often find themselves underpaid and overworked. Moreover, they can feel somewhat sidelined from the central church leadership structure. While this may sometimes spare them from certain decisions, it can also mean exclusion from representing the very people they serve in crucial church matters. And let's not forget that youth ministry leaders are on the frontlines supporting a generation facing unique challenges like never before. Gen Z youth have been profoundly impacted by the pandemic, experiencing disruptions to their lives and critical development time lost in connecting with peers, schools, and communities. Your host for this season is Rose Madrid Swetman, the Associate Director of the Center for Transforming Engagement. We're incredibly thankful to Matt Wiggins for his invitation to explore this pressing topic. In this exciting season, we'll be joined by leaders in the youth and campus ministry field from across the United States. Together, we'll explore a world of insights, engage in meaningful discussions, and dare to dream about innovative ways to support these dedicated leaders and the generations they serve. Sometimes the culture in our church/youth settings can be an uphill climb when it comes to working in new things or trying to break the cycle of "We have always done it this way." How can we go about leading change within our church communities that will not only put us on the right track to get us there, but also make changes that will last? Come join the conversation as Brent sits down with Mark DeVries, the founder of Ministry Architects and author of Sustainable Youth Ministry, as they talk about how to lead change within a culture both efficiently and effectively. We hear all about youth ministry from a place of abundance, in today's episode. Annalise Hume is a Spiritual Director who currently leads workshops on the connection of movement and faith. She has many years of experience working with Young Life and also happens to be one of our grant coaches through Ministry Architects, helping churches learn along their grant journey.
Regardless of where a church is on the theological and political spectrum, all churches have always been interested in and concerned about youth. There are many reasons for this that exist at the same time and with varying degrees of intensity. As volunteer organizations, churches know that their survival depends on the continual and prolonged inclusion of new people. Churches also know that the age-range from middle school through college is when people are most receptive to the Gospel. Churches also have the desire to provide pastoral care to all within their ministries, including young people. However, with the reality of the growing diversity and pluralism in the United States and also the increasing decline of Christianity in our nation, churches have been especially focused upon this issue of youth, because, if the statistics are accurate, it is young people who are the primary ones opting out of church. This episode focuses upon what is going on with young people today in general and also what is going on with those young people who are Christians. My guest is Laura Addis. Laura Addis has been involved in youth ministry since 2000 in both staff and volunteer roles. She currently serves as the Ministry Associate with Students at First Baptist Church in Asheville, North Carolina, as Director of Programs for Life in Trinity Ministry, and as a consultant for Ministry Architects. Laura has regularly written for various youth magazines, online sites, and curriculum publishers. Based upon Laura's extensive experience, we are going to lean into her insight and wisdom in understanding what is happening with young people, including Christian young people today. The music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project. How can you raise kids who will grow up to love Jesus, you, and each other? What can we do to help our kids love Jesus, not just follow the rules or go to church? How can we balance going to church with extracurriculars? These are big questions, right? I'm so thankful experienced and empty-nester parents Kirk and Debbie Freeman are on the show. They raised three girls who love God, their family, and others. In today's episode, we crack the code on how they did it. Download | Subscription (FREE) In this episode, Rev. Gibson and Johnny Gwin explore how the endeavor of self-discovery is transformed when we realize the grounding of our identity in God. Illustrated in the lessons of the blind man (from birth) being healed by Jesus and Samuel's anointing of a young King David, the subject of their and our spiritual transformation is addressed. This spiritual and physical formation to the person God wants us to be starts with our baptism. In our baptism, a complete rebirth, we are given all the faith from God we will ever need. However, there is a catch, to be truly transformed it's our duty to draw it out, mature it, develop it. Are you taking responsibility for your Christian formation? Are you assisting others on their journeys of self-discovery and complete formation? Are we capable of seeing our path and the way to properly worship and honor God? Or, are we blind to his truth, gifts, and possibilities? What You Will Hear: > Learners not the learned will inherit the earth > Be open to seeing the truth and not being so sure you know everything - while you can see are you really seeing > Is the doctrine and the culture of the Church become too rigid? > Jesus's use of parables to be read in many different ways > Parents protecting their son in the Gospel - not so much fear but protection > Opened up completely spiritually and physically to be able to see the truth and be transform to a believer > Blind man being healed is a true narrative of someone being reborn into the world spiritually and physically > A new birth = Baptism > Once your baptized your formation will continue - it's a total rebirth > In your baptism you are given all the faith you will ever need - it's your duty to draw it out, mature it, develop it > Ministry Architects helping our Christ Church Cathedral to put us on the path of our parish self-discovery > Taking responsibility for our spiritual formation > Christ Church is metaphorically in the teenage years of our formation > Christ Church Cathedral - an old church that is actually young. We are a peculiar entity that creates an opportunity of new life and possibilities > Beverly's pop culture reference: Might Morphin Power Rangers movie and how she was entertained and enlightened by this teenage movie > Leaders and Gurus typical reaction of "these are the chosen ones for this gift or mission" > Samual - the King Maker choosing King David - the biblical dating game > David the forgotten is the actual choice > God doesn't see the world like Man. Man sees the outward appearance, God sees the heart > Transformation has to happen before the education > Information versus formation & education versus formation > Transformation comes from ritualian routine, some sort of literal practice that you engage in > Western Christianity adopting more the ancient ways and even the Eastern ways > Self-examination and the importance of this exercise to Self Discovery > Our relationship to Samual and David in the first reading > The Imposter Syndrome in the weekly lessons > The Spirit Voice versuses the Parent Voice. Which should we should listen to > Teachers learning from the students > Working to form others when you are still working on forming yourself > The Church seen as a school > Being around the young is an opportunity to see another world - it can enrich your life > Power Rangers origin story reflects that the idea that before they can "morph" they need to come to a certain place of self-awareness, vulnerability, and a realization of a reliance on others > Your formation and transformation is within you, but you have to do the work and have the awareness to release it from within you Readings Referenced: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 Ephesians 5:8-14 John 9:1-41 What do you think about Pulpit To Pew?
