“What is truth?” Pontius Pilate scoffed at Jesus (Jn 18:38), and that's how we think about matters today in our culture—subjectively: my truth, your truth, etc. To make the argument that there is a knowable Truth (with a capital T) that is written in the world and in our bones, theologians Deborah Savage and Robert Fastiggi examine a selection of autobiographical accounts of ‘lived experience.' They take a number of personal essays written by those who have erred from the path of Catholic social teaching and sexual morality—in the dark forest of the world, to borrow from Dante—and their subsequent disappointments and suffering. They examine these narratives through the anthropology of John Paul II and the authority of the physical and social sciences, including medical doctors. So, there is Good News for all of us: if we find ourselves lost and unhappy in our errant meanderings, the Church can bring us home. We can always choose, as God reminded Cain gently (Gen 4:7), “sin is couching at the door; its desire is for you, but you may overcome it.” Here is the book on the En Route Books website (which includes video links)here is the book on Amazon.com. In this conversation, Dr. Jennifer Roback-Morris and Richard Doerflinger discuss the Catholic Church's teachings on sexual morality, particularly in the context of contraception and family planning. They explore the cultural shifts towards subjectivism in moral reasoning, the role of the Pontifical Academy for Life, and share personal experiences that highlight the challenges and implications of these teachings. The discussion emphasizes the need for a return to moral absolutes and the importance of rebuilding a marriage culture to address issues like abortion. This conversation explores the profound social and moral implications of contraception and abortion, emphasizing the unintended consequences of these practices on individuals and society. The speakers discuss how the contraceptive ideology has led to increased out-of-wedlock childbearing, emotional distress among women, and a shift in moral norms that undermine the sanctity of life. They argue for the importance of moral absolutes and the need to recognize the lived experiences of those affected by these issues, advocating for a return to a culture that respects human dignity and the value of life. Catholicism is one of the last holdouts against contraception, abortion, euthanasia, sex outside of marriage, and more. The Church's moral teachings ultimately protect people from heartache, illness, broken families, and, especially in the case of abortion, death. And yet, these teachings have opponents even within the Catholic Church's hierarchy. Richard Doerflinger is one of the contributors to Lived Experience and the Search for Truth: Revisiting Catholic Sexual Morality, which argues against those who wish to change the Church's moral teachings. He shares his personal experience of how The Pill affected his wife physically and mentally, and how they came to follow the Church's path, Natural Family Planning, instead. Doerflinger explains how secular culture has turned to “expressive individualism” and subjectivism, where moral principals are whatever feels right for the individual. This mindset causes problems, Doerflinger explains. Moral absolutes are absolute for a reason. Commercial sex and imperialism — army bases and brothels — have often gone hand in hand. But in the early 20th century an emergent U.S. empire defined itself as rooted in sexual purity. Historian Eva Payne describes how a heavy price for this notion of American exceptionalism was paid by women in the United States, who were policed and punished, along with those in U.S. colonies like the Philippines and the Panama Canal Zone. From the Bible God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:28 Adam made love to [yada] his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Genesis 4:1 May your fountain be blessed,     and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer—     may her breasts satisfy you always,     may you ever be intoxicated with her love. Proverbs 5:18-19 [He] I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride;     I have gathered my myrrh with my spice. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey;     I have drunk my wine and my milk. [Friends] Eat, friends, and drink;     drink your fill of love. Song of Songs 5:1 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:7-9 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. Genesis 2:25 For your Maker is your husband— the Lord Almighty is his name— the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. Isaiah 54:5 As a young man marries a young woman, so will your Builder marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:5 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. As our societal landscape morphs, so too does the discourse around biblical sexual ethics, rendering Greg's apologetic work more vital than ever. Our discussion moves from the respectful engagement in an era dominated by the dehumanizing effects of social media to the intricacies of gender dysphoria and the significant impact of recent legal decisions. This episode promises to equip believers with compassionate, yet firm strategies for holding meaningful conversations on some of today's most sensitive issues.  The journey through gender identity and its spiritual and scientific dimensions proves to be both sensitive and enlightening. Unpacking the prevalence of gender dysphoria, particularly among adolescents, we tackle the controversy of social contagion and the politicization of science within the framework of faith. Greg brings to light the importance of understanding the binary nature of gender dysphoria against the backdrop of mental health challenges. Providing clarity in a time of confusion, our exchange seeks to highlight the spiritual narratives underpinning the current societal views on gender.  Concluding this essential dialogue, we reflect on the Christian experience, including the church's own pitfalls and the necessity for honesty in our sexual struggles. Greg sheds light on celibacy in gay relationships and the invaluable support provided by ministries like Calibrate for parents of LGBTQ children. By emphasizing the necessity of community and sharing resources freely, we aim to reinforce the importance of upholding God's standards for sexuality. This episode is an invitation to join a conversation that holds space for encouragement, community building, and steadfast faith in Christ above all.TIMESTAMPS:(00:16) - Cultural Shifts in Biblical Sexual Ethics (14:46) - Gender Dysphoria and Societal Influences (22:11) - Navigating Struggles in Christian Living (34:09) - Clarifying Biblical Stance on Homosexuality (42:20) - Ethical Perspectives on LGBTQ Relationships (57:41) - Community Building Through Free ResourcesResources from Stand To Reason:Website: https://www.str.orgYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@STRvideos Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/standtoreason93Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/standtoreason/Get Greg's books here:https://store.str.org/home

Lessons From the Soviets about Sexual Morality

The Soviet Union was well known for rejecting so-called “bourgeois” morality in ways that led to rejecting reality. Economically this meant squashing human self-interest in favor of state control.  So, basic modern commodities like cars and plumbing could take years for the average Russian to secure. Marxist-inspired agricultural science rejected “Western” science and led to the deaths of millions as crops were planted in the dead of winter, too close together, and without pesticides in the mistaken belief that they could be “educated” to take on more beneficial traits.    In the 1920s, Revolutionary Russia rejected “bourgeois” sexual morality by attacking the institution of marriage and the nuclear family.  Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels believed the nuclear family was, like religion, just another means of keeping the working class oppressed. According to the Marxist dialectic version of history, prehistoric humanity lived in a state of free love, and the nuclear family only emerged to protect the property rights of the rich through inheritance, keep workers content with less, and enslave women to the home.    Engels, who spent a lot of time in Manchester's red-light district, was more specific than Marx in his condemnations of the family.   He wrote, “[W]ith every great revolutionary movement the question of ‘free love' comes to the foreground.” Together, Marx and Engels attacked “bourgeois claptrap about the family and education, about the hallowed co-relation of parent and child.” In their view, family was a social construct that stood in the way of revolutionary progress.    When Lenin and the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917, they put these anti-family theories into practice. In 1918, the Soviets issued decrees “on the abolition of marriage” and “on civil partnership, children and ownership.” Marriage could be declared without the involvement of the state, and divorce could be obtained just as easily. As one Russian journalist summarized, “Divorce was a matter of choice. Abortions were legalized. All of that implied a total liberation of family and sexual relations.”    Madame Smidovich, a leading Communist propagandist, put it this way: “To clear the family out of the accumulated dust of the ages we had to give it a good shakeup, and we did.”  Almost immediately, however, this experiment began to spiral the nation downward.    Men across the country divorced their wives and sought new sexual encounters. The number of illegitimate children swelled by hundreds of thousands. Women with children were abandoned, while the more enterprising among them blackmailed multiple men for child support. Despite the State's decree that fathers must pay alimony to their children regardless of marital status, thousands of children were kicked to the curb because they could not—or would not—be cared for. From there, an ungovernable criminal element developed in Russia's largest cities. Given Russia's dismal economic situation, the idea that the state would care for these children proved laughable.    A Russian writer of that time observed, “It was not an unusual occurrence for a boy of twenty to have had three or four wives, or for a girl of the same age to have had three or four abortions.”   The status of women devolved as well. As Madame Smidovich described in Pravda, the Communist newspaper: “If a man lusts after a young girl, whether she is a student, a worker, or even a school-age girl, then the girl must obey his lust; otherwise, she will be considered a bourgeois daughter, unworthy to be called a true communist.”     As the 1920s wore on, however, Russia's Soviet leaders were forced by reality to change course and desperately attempted to stem the tide of fatherlessness, crime, legal confusion, and economic disaster.   In many ways, the Russian family never recovered. Even today, Russia's birth rate continues to plummet. As late as the 1990s, and despite decades of government propaganda encouraging population growth, one study found that in some parts of Russia, there were 770 abortions per 100 births—“by far the highest rate anywhere in the world.”   In 1920, on the other side of the world, G.K. Chesterton prophetically wrote that “[t]his triangle of truisms, of father, mother and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilisations which disregard it.”     History is full of examples of societies that tamper with God's design for marriage, sex, and the family. It's no coincidence that en vogue progressive ideas today, ideas with distinct roots in cultural Marxism, also decry marriage and the family as oppressive institutions that should be reimagined and sexual morality as outdated and even harmful.   These things are not mere “social constructs,” however. They are laws of reality, like gravity. As Dallas Willard once observed, “We can't choose to step off the roof and then choose to not hit the ground.” That's true for individuals and societies alike.  This Breakpoint was co-authored by Kasey Leander. The two most basic problems are: how do I survive the immune system of a host? Because our immune system is absolutely amazing. I mean, it wins 99.99999% of the time. They're incredible at picking out foreign cells or particles and getting rid of them. And so that's a really hard problem. The other really hard problem that every germ has is: how do I get from one host to the next? Because if I want to pass on my genes to future generations, I can get a few generations inside a host, but I've ultimately got to keep going to the next host, or my children's, children's children have to go to the next host. The human body is responsive to things around it06:06: The human body is responsive to things around it, things we put into it. And so, the human body changes over time, and it can be a crude yet really, really powerful way of thinking about changes in human health. How can human societies bring infectious disease under control49:37: Human societies are able to bring infectious diseases under control through the deployment of a number of always-overlapping mechanisms. And so you need all of it. You need good nutrition; you need economic growth and development that give particularly children high levels of nutrition to survive infection. You also need good policy. This would include number one, clean water, and number two, mandatory vaccination.Infections hinder growth development07:58: If your whole childhood is fighting off nasty infections, your body doesn't have the energy budget to invest in growth. So it's not just what you eat—protein is one thing. It's also eating away your energy, like little microparasites that you're fighting off constantly. And then other things—social stress, the kind of work environment— So bones. Marriage and Sex in Rome

The Kingdom Perspective

Transcript:Hello! This is Pastor Don of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective! One of the things that distinguished Christians in ancient Rome was their ethic on sex and marriage. To the average Roman, sex was largely detached from marriage; it was merely a natural impulse to be fulfilled. Male virtue was in part judged by the strength of one's sexual appetite and exploits. This was not seen as a problem but as a positive feature. Many are shocked to learn of the practice of temple prostitution—the use of sex in pagan worship. In going up to the temple, it was perfectly normal for a man to hire one of the many prostitutes that worked there. Depending on the temple, these prostitutes could be either male or female. Now, in this context, followers of Jesus were maligned as prudes. Following Holy Scripture, Christians reserved sex for a loving marital relationship between a husband and a wife (Genesis 2:18-24 & Matthew 19:3-9). Anything outside this bond, they considered “sexual immorality”. Now, this idea of “sexual immorality” was largely foreign to their pagan neighbors. Having a wife was primarily an economic choice, a way to have children and manage one's home. And so, for the Roman male, it was perfectly legitimate to find one's sexual pleasure outside the bonds of marriage. For many men this was fulfilled not only with temple prostitutes, but in relations with other men. Many of the Roman Emperors had male lovers. Nero even married his (the former slave Pythagoras), with Nero himself donning the role of “the bride” at the “wedding”. Don't forget, it was Nero who began the Roman persecution of Christians. Now, I say all this to emphasize we need not get uptight at our present cultural circumstance, as sad as it may be. As faithful Christians, we are standing not only on the “right side of history”, but also with our ancient brothers and sisters, who were likewise misunderstood and maligned in their day for their faithfulness to God's commandments. Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective. “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, ‘Awake, O sleeper,   and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.'”~ Ephesians 5:1-14 (ESV) Some sources to consider: Sexual Morality in a Christless World by Matthew Rueger (Concordia Publishing 2016). Catharine Edwards (1997). Should we unhitch sexual morality from the Bible? Previously, Andy Stanley was thrust into controversy, when he encouraged his congregation to "unhitch from the Old Testament". Most recently, the controversy has been stirred again by viral social media posts that have threatened to expose Andy Stanley as a heretic. Why? Well, the claim is that Andy Stanley has become an LGBTQI+-affirming pastor.  Now it appears, Andy Stanley is encouraging his church to "unhitch" morality from the bible altogether.  Listen as Josh Lewis, Michael Rowntree, and Michael Miller investigate the claims about Andy Stanley and discuss what Christians should do when pastors become LGBT-affirming. Donate (Paypal)https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=GC2Z86XHHG4X6___________________________________________________________________________________Exclusive Content (Patreon)https://www.patreon.com/TheRemnantRadio__________________________________________________________________________________We're social! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheRemnantRadioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theremnantradio/___________________________________________________________________________________Our Favorite Bookshttps://www.amazon.com/shop/theremnantradio___________________________________________________________________________________Michael Rowntree's Church Bridgewayhttps://www.bridgewaychurch.com/___________________________________________________________________________________Michael Miller's Church Reclamation Churchhttps://reclamationdenver.com/___________________________________________________________________________________Kairos Classroom: Use Promo Code Remnant for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classes__________________________________________________________________________________The Gospel Of Mark Group Packets https://the-remnant-radio.creator-spring.com/listing/the-gospel-of-mark-workbooks________________________________________________________________________Download Free Ebookhttps://theremnantradio.com/free-ebook-download-2/__________________________________________________________________________________Free Mini E-coursehttps://remnant-university.teachable.com/p/free-mini-course__________________________________________________________________________________Word & Spirit School Of Ministry (117 Video Discipleship Course)https://remnant-university.teachable.com/p/remnant-university__________________________________________________________________________________Conferencehttps://onrealm.org/FaithChurchKairos Classroom: Use Promo Code "Remnant" for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classes Kairos Classroom: Use Promo Code Remnant for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classesSupport the show
