An all new Appreciation Month is upon us here at Cinema Degeneration and this time we are heading out into the Dystopian fueled nightmares of the Apocalypse with 'Wasteland Appreciation Month.' It's a month long celebration of all things Post-Apocalyptic so you can expect marauders, scavengers, mutants and mayhem, cool car chases, fights over water and fuel, and battles of epic proportions. Our 2nd episode is on a very obscure science fiction yarn with 1991's"MINDWARP" from director Steve Barnett. Starring genre heavyweights Bruce Campbell and Angus Scrimm and featuring impressive special effects by KNB Efx. It's an odd tale of the post-apocalyptic world of 2037 where our main character Judy rebels against an AI ruled utopia and is exiled to the wasteland for her efforts and is forced to battle with drifters, mutated cannibals and an evil overlord named The Seer. Do you dare to travel into a world where Ash from the Evil Dead and The Tall Man from Phantasm face off in a swordfight??? If that doesn't sound intriguing to you, then you've got to check your pulse because you may already be dead. Our deep dive discussion on this Fangoria produced film from the 90's is headed off by the Three Stooges of Cinema Degeneration... Eric Phillips (Sequel Too, Deja Vu), Korey Dawson (Without Warning) and Cameron Scott. You can expect digressions and rants on everything from the Evil Dead franchise, the late great and incomparable Danny Hicks, and the Lawnmower Man franchise to name but a few. Buckle in because it's going to be a wild ride! "Stupidity, chaos, cruelty, pain. Reality, a failure worse than any nightmare. There was no fixing it."
This episode was originally recorded on July 4th as part of our KNB EFX month, hence all of the Fourth of July comments lol My sincerest apologies for the delay. Episode 32, a special Halloween-like episode where Tai and Adrienne have a great conversation with Oscar & Emmy award winner, of the KNB EFX group, Howard Berger, to talk about his debut book Masters of Make-up Effects. While Tai draws Howard a rendition of The Creature From the Black Lagoon, they discuss working on Quentin Tarantino's movies and coming up with with his very own low-light blood which they call Tarantino Blood. Howard talks about what an honor it was to get roasted by Don Rickles in a movie trailer on the set of Casino. They also discuss what effects winning an Oscar can have on your career if any, and how Hi-Definition digital movie-making has ruined movies. All that and a whole lot more. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This June is “VHS Cover Art” month at Catching Up On Cinema! Every week we'll be reviewing films with incredible cover art from the VHS era. This week, Kyle and Trevor review Adam Marcus', Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)! Oft regarded as the black sheep of the franchise, Jason Goes to Hell is the 9th installment of the Friday the 13thseries of slasher films. Originally conceived by franchise shepherd Sean S. Cunningham as an opportunity to crossover his Friday the 13th series with A Nightmare on Elm Street in the form of a Freddy vs. Jason project (a decade before that film would actually be produced), Jason Goes to Hell would be the first Friday film to be distributed by “The House that Freddy Built," New Line Cinema. Directed by 23 year old Adam Marcus, and apparently shot from a fragmented and indecipherable script, Jason Goes to Hell is a largely maligned chapter in the franchise that represents perhaps the most dramatic deviation from the standard narrative formulae and established tropes of the series. Despite franchise favorite, Kane Hodder, donning the hockey mask and machete in the film, Jason Goes to Hell is a difficult pill to swallow for Jason fans, with the character being unceremoniously executed within the first 5 minutes of the film, and only returning (in proper) for it's closing moments. While the film is commendable for trying something new, the clumsy pacing, baffling and overly complicated plot/mythology, and deeply unsatisfying body hopping gimmick that denies viewers the opportunity to see their favorite slasher in action, results in a clunky mess that completely fails to make it to the fireworks factory. Produced by Sean S. Cunningham, and possessed of some solid effects from Greg Nicotero and KNB EFX, as well as a (sadly lackluster) score by franchise stalwart Harry Manfredini, Jason Goes to Hell had good people involved that were attempting to do good work, however every story has to have a lowest point, and Jason Goes to Hell may just be that for the Friday the 13th films.
