The first week of December isn't just for cozy rom-coms and twinkling lights. On this episode of This Week in Horror History, we dig into the spooky side of December 1–7, charting travel nightmares, cursed deserts, classic Universal monsters, and a knife-clawed college mascot turning school spirit into a bloodbath. We kick things off with Turistas (2006), the mid-2000s travel horror where a dream backpacking trip in Brazil plunges into organ-harvesting terror. It's that “don't get on the bus” era of horror, loaded with sweaty paranoia and the ugly underside of “exotic” tourism. From there, we head to the desert with Scalps (1983), a shoestring-budget curse shocker about archaeology students who dig on sacred land and unleash a vengeful spirit. It slipped quietly into limited December release but later clawed out a cult following on home video and streaming thanks to its gritty, regional DIY vibe. Then we turn back the clock to House of Dracula (1945), one of Universal's last serious monster mash-ups. Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's monster all converge on a tormented doctor who thinks he can “cure” them — and instead gives us a fog-drenched fever dream of capes, neck bolts, and mad science that feels tailor-made for chilly December nights. Our Deep Cut Spotlight goes to Girls Nite Out (1982), a campus slasher originally released as The Scaremaker. A college basketball win kicks off an all-night scavenger hunt, while a killer in the school's bear mascot costume stalks the grounds with steak knives strapped to its paws. It's pure early-'80s slasher energy — dorm drama, campus radio, locker-room stalking — that barely made a ripple in theaters but was rescued by VHS and, eventually, a boutique Blu-ray restoration. We also roll through a Birthday Roll for horror heavy hitters born this week — from Sean S. Cunningham and Tony Todd to genre-shaping talents behind slashers, supernatural sequels, and expressionist nightmares — and talk about how their work threads through the films we're spotlighting. To wrap it all up, we land on a Weekly Recommendation that fits perfectly with early December: Edward Scissorhands (1990). It's the ultimate snowy, suburban gothic fairy tale — pastel houses, winter loneliness, and a gentle “monster” whose ice-carved sculptures make the snow fall — ideal for horror fans easing into holiday mode without losing that eerie edge. This episode of This Week in Horror History is brought to you in part by Savorista — the spooky-friendly coffee brand serving bold, gourmet flavors in decaf and half-caf roasts so you can binge horror without wrecking your sleep. Head to Savorista.com, pick out your favorite light, medium, or dark roast, and use promo code SPOOKY at checkout to get 25% off your first order. Every purchase supports the show directly and keeps the horror history rolling. If you love horror podcasts, physical media, and deep-cut genre history, queue this one up and let This Week in Horror History program your first December horror marathon.

“You see, Jason was my son, and today is his birthday.” We're back talking about an iconic 80s slasher for October, or shall we say our favorite slasher mother! We broke out our Friday the 13th box set and watched the original 1980 movie. Released on the coat tails of John Carpenter's Halloween to capitalize on the masked psycho killer craze. Made for a slim budget of $550,000, but becoming a sleeper hit and eventual genre touchstone of the decade. We talk about the classic slasher elements its writer, Victor Miller, and director, Sean S. Cunningham, put in their “rip-off” of Halloween. We add some of our favorite Friday hunks to the list. We see you, Peter, in your cut-offs and neck handkerchief! But more importantly, we give Betsy Palmer her flowers for her iconic performance as Mrs. Voorhees, the gag of all gags in horror movies.  Thank you for listening, and don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

What would summer be without cheesy 80's rock, swimming in the lake, lounging on the pontoon, non-marital sex in a rickety cabin and brutal, bloody death? Al drops by to discuss seminal slasher, Friday the 13th (1980), directed by Sean S. Cunningham and Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985), directed by Danny Steinmann. We discuss the phenomenon of how the original film became arguably the single most influential movie for the subsequent 80's horror boom, despite being widely regarded as inferior even within its own franchise. Meanwhile, we take a closer look at one of the most derided films in the series. Is it underappreciated? Or is it really a pile of sleazy junk with nothing to recommend it? We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Friday the 13th by skipping ahead to the 1:20:10 mark, and for Friday the 13th: A New Beginning by skipping ahead to 2:21:32. What's up, freaks? This week on the podcast, I tackle the legacy of Friday the 13th by comparing the 1980 original to its 2009 remake. We begin with a breakdown of both films—Sean S. Cunningham's suspenseful whodunit that introduced Pamela Voorhees as one of horror's earliest female slashers, and Marcus Nispel's grittier reimagining that transformed Jason into a brutal, territorial hunter. We discuss how the two films differ in structure, tone, violence, character archetypes, and especially in the portrayal of Jason—from a tragic child's memory to a relentless predator with survivalist instincts. Despite their differences, both versions share familiar slasher elements: the eerie setting of Camp Crystal Lake, the indulgent teen victims, and the iconic “ki ki ki, ma ma ma” score that still signals incoming doom. We explore recurring themes like grief, vengeance, trauma, and morality, while also unpacking how the franchise has evolved with the times. Finally, we examine the franchise's stalled cinematic future, the ongoing legal battle that's frozen Jason's return, and the hope offered by A24's upcoming Crystal Lake prequel series. Thank you, everyone, for your support. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out on Instagram at @so_you_like_horror or email us directly at soyoulikehorror@gmail.com. It's Friday the 13th, people!! And that could only mean one thing: an under-seen teen bully flick from Sean S. Cunningham? That's right, we've hit the bottom of the barrel for Jason-related content and have now slid into Mr. Cunningham's lesser efforts, 1985's Army brats vs. bully flick, THE NEW KIDS! Along the way, we talk about parentless towns, multiple sleepwalking performances, a surprisingly wet microfiche scene, and one of the cinema's least memorable “Grand Opening/Grand Closing” performances!! All this, plus a gold star teen bedroom set decoration, witness someone sexually harassing their child, consider the titular fanatic, shake with fear at a goose scare, and end with a jolting edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure! This week, Norm from 2 Nerds 1 Quest is back. He's never seen any of the Friday the 13th movies before. In fact, he hasn't even seen clips of them. He only knows of it from references in other movies (like Scream), so, we're fixing that. We are discussing the original 1980 film, Friday the 13th. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham, and staring Betsy Palmer and featuring a young Kevin Bacon. Does the movie that started the franchise hold up after over 40 years? Or is it a boring slog of a movie with dated stereotypes and tropes? Let's find out...Check out Norm on 2 Nerds 1 Quest, and actual play stream. Pack your sleeping bags and don't stand with your back to a window because it's time for Sean S. Cunningham & Victor Miller's FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) to prove that a movie capitalizing on a trend can become a trendsetter in its own right. We then look at how FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 (1981), directed by Steve Miner, altered the trajectory of the franchise and overall trend.

Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 "Friday the 13th" was a slasher in the ilk of Halloween. Could the creators possibly have known that they were embarking on a franchise that would take the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, to New York City, the midwest, space and even Hell? We go back to the film that started it all and ask the big questions;  Why do small town folk always turn to look at the new person who enters the restaurant? How did Crazy Ralph get into the pantry? We explore Mrs. Voorhees motivation. Is Pamela Voorhees a trained assassin? Let's discuss the leadership skills of Steve, the camp manager. We put forth a new theory about the origin of Jason Voorhees.Visit our website:runningscaredmedia.comSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodSupport the show

To end out #AuGHOST, a celebration of the ghost films released by New World Pictures, we talk about a movie that started a franchise (albeit one New World only half participated In): HOUSE! The film about a haunted house taken over by a deceased owner's nephew with his own strange history brought director Steve Miner and producer Sean S. Cunningham into the New World fold, just as they had finished working on the first three FRIDAY THE 13TH films! Miner would quickly become a go-to director for New World, while Cunningham would shepherd the rest of the franchise, which we will rank in this episode! Also we will discuss the incredible George Wendt, how to flirt your way into getting free babysitting, the wrong way to cook a microwave dinner, and Marc's fascination with toilet flushing! We've had a great time during this #AuGHOST, and HOUSE is the perfect way to close it out!
