It's Friday the 13th, people!! And that could only mean one thing: an under-seen teen bully flick from Sean S. Cunningham? That's right, we've hit the bottom of the barrel for Jason-related content and have now slid into Mr. Cunningham's lesser efforts, 1985's Army brats vs. bully flick, THE NEW KIDS! Along the way, we talk about parentless towns, multiple sleepwalking performances, a surprisingly wet microfiche scene, and one of the cinema's least memorable “Grand Opening/Grand Closing” performances!! All this, plus a gold star teen bedroom set decoration, witness someone sexually harassing their child, consider the titular fanatic, shake with fear at a goose scare, and end with a jolting edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure! If you don't listen to this episode, you'll be sorry. Actually, you'll be fine, but we'd love for you to listen anyway. Part of the BLEAV Network.Get even more episodes exclusively on Patreon! This week, Norm from 2 Nerds 1 Quest is back. He's never seen any of the Friday the 13th movies before. In fact, he hasn't even seen clips of them. He only knows of it from references in other movies (like Scream), so, we're fixing that. We are discussing the original 1980 film, Friday the 13th. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham, and staring Betsy Palmer and featuring a young Kevin Bacon. Does the movie that started the franchise hold up after over 40 years? Or is it a boring slog of a movie with dated stereotypes and tropes? Let's find out...Check out Norm on 2 Nerds 1 Quest, and actual play stream. Return guest Ian of the Cult Connections podcast joins me for a look at two horror films with a lake in a woodsy area as the eerie setting for a slasher: the titular bay in Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood (1971) and Crystal Lake in Sean S. Cunningham's Friday the 13th (1980)! We excitedly dissect these films as every horror fan should. Plus, poll results, interactive trivia, and listener shoutouts! Pack your sleeping bags and don't stand with your back to a window because it's time for Sean S. Cunningham & Victor Miller's FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) to prove that a movie capitalizing on a trend can become a trendsetter in its own right. We then look at how FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 (1981), directed by Steve Miner, altered the trajectory of the franchise and overall trend.

Mark and David Cross (@ItsMeDavidCross on X) discuss the 1989 creature feature DeepStar Six. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham, and starring Nancy Everhard, Greg Evigan, Miguel Ferrer, and lots of blinking lights, the movie focuses on what happens when a large monster attacks a tiny underwater base. In this episode, they also talk about knockoff creature features, decompression pains, and the perils of underwater drilling. Enjoy!
Time to wish a BIG 4-O to John Hughes' SIXTEEN CANDLES and the beach-sex romp HARDBODIES; which got us wondering, "why did we skip SPRING BREAK" last year??". So, a belated HBD to Sean S. When director Sean S. Cunningham set out to make the original FRIDAY THE 13TH, he was trying to craft a cinematic rollercoaster ride. His little independent production was such a crowd-pleasing thrill ride it became one of the biggest hits of 1980. And spawned a franchise that is still going on to this day. So let's celebrate FRIDAY THE 13TH by looking back and figuring out WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
BONUS: Interviews with Sean S. Cunningham and Stephen Gyllenhaal
Returning to exercise his vengeance as the December champion, author Brandon Getz unleashes ... a goofy, live-action Looney Tunes film. Brian and Steve as subjected to the horrors of ... a caterpuppy? Despite being produced by Sean S. Cunningham, featuring Kane Hodder, having a score by Harry Manfredini, and a having a skeletal zombie horse, House 2 isn't a horror film. It's not even a true sequel. It's a goof off summer camp film to pay some friends and let an FX crew flex their muscles. Someone probably got a nice tax break too. It's Halloween time (!!!) and here at THE BIG 4-0 we didn't have any solid 1983 movies worth reviewing this week, so we decided to take advantage of the opportunity to discuss two seminal horror flicks we otherwise wouldn't be able to review within the parameters of this podcast's timeline: The arguable granddaddy of the slasher genre, John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN, and the other arguable granddaddy of the modern slasher, Sean S. Cunningham's FRIDAY THE 13th. As always, please remember to rate, like, and subscribe; and we'll be back next week with another bonus episode - We're coming up on The World Series, so Ron and Peter will be celebrating by reliving 1989's MAJOR LEAGUE and 1998's BASEketball. We're calling our shot now, it's gonna be a homer!
John, Kristina and Jenn with two N's take a deep dive into the first Friday The 13th flick directed by Sean S. Cunningham. The trio reminisce about watching the series at a young age. The confusion about the ending is remarked upon. John can't stop talking about different kinds of pies. It's a bit of a loopy episode recorded right in the middle of Red October (Go Phils). Sit back, crack a cold one and enjoy.
The day is Friday, October 13th 2023. "Season of Spoop" covering urban legend themed films continues with Aaron and Derek tackling 1980's slasher classic "Friday the 13th" directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller. They discuss how this further propelled the trope heavy modern slasher, how it compares to other slasher franchises and its own sequels, and what made this an independent release. They also get into Betsy Palmer's involvement, the severe critical derision it received, what makes this such an easy to watch horror flick, and many other aspects about the movie and franchise. Derek is going up to Camp Blood. Aaron is doomed! Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 "Friday the 13th" was a slasher in the ilk of Halloween. Could the creators possibly have known that they were embarking on a franchise that would take the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, to New York City, the midwest, space and even Hell? We go back to the film that started it all and ask the big questions; Why do small town folk always turn to look at the new person who enters the restaurant? How did Crazy Ralph get into the pantry? We explore Mrs. Voorhees motivation. Is Pamela Voorhees a trained assassin? Let's discuss the leadership skills of Steve, the camp manager. We put forth a new theory about the origin of Jason Voorhees.Visit our website:runningscaredmedia.comSupport us on Patreon:patreon.com/runningscaredEmail us at:therunningscaredpodcast@gmail.comFollow us on Twitter @runningscaredpdon Instagram @runningscaredpodSupport the show
To end out #AuGHOST, a celebration of the ghost films released by New World Pictures, we talk about a movie that started a franchise (albeit one New World only half participated In): HOUSE! The film about a haunted house taken over by a deceased owner's nephew with his own strange history brought director Steve Miner and producer Sean S. Cunningham into the New World fold, just as they had finished working on the first three FRIDAY THE 13TH films! Miner would quickly become a go-to director for New World, while Cunningham would shepherd the rest of the franchise, which we will rank in this episode! Also we will discuss the incredible George Wendt, how to flirt your way into getting free babysitting, the wrong way to cook a microwave dinner, and Marc's fascination with toilet flushing! We've had a great time during this #AuGHOST, and HOUSE is the perfect way to close it out!

Sean S. Cunningham had a successful career of starting films cheap and fast. Originally from New York, Cunningham had a vast knowledge of directing films and came to Hollywood. He started about the same time Wes Craven did. Cunningham meets Craven and decided to make a comedy-romance film called Together (1971).Then they both shocked the world with the rape and ultra-violence of The Last House on the Left (1972). Craven directed the flick and Cunningham financed and produced. However Cunningham wanted to get a mix of comedy and horror and made Case of the Full Moon Murders (1973) and then started other comedy films like Manny's Orphans (1978) and Here Come the Tigers (1978) .Struggling in Hollywood Cunningham saw John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) and wanted to make a follow up type film but would possibly regret it. Cunningham brought Friday the 13th (1980) into the cinema in 1980, a year of many other horror films.Friday the 13th (1980) was a shocking, gory and violent film about camp counselors being slashed by a killer and had Betsy Palmer in the lead role. Little did Cunningham know that Friday the 13th would have never ending sequels. Cunningham gladly avoided all of them and Friday the 13th remains one of the most popular horror films in history. Instead Cunningham wanted to make it big when he brought a best-selling novel to the screen, A Stranger Is Watching (1982) with Rip Torn, but it was a disappointment. Cunningham went downhill with the over sexed teen comedy Spring Break (1983) and The New Kids (1985). Cunningham then produced House (1985) and several of its sequels. Cunningham next entered the world of underwater terrors after The Abyss (1989) was released. Cunningham did a follow up called DeepStar Six (1989), but it was a flop, however it beat another 1989 underwater thriller Leviathan (1989) at box office receipts.Cunningham was finished with directing and moved on to producing films and teaching. He produced The Horror Show (1989), My Boyfriend's Back (1993) and Friday the 13th's last sequel Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993). Cunningham then did yet another follow up to Friday the 13th with Jason X (2001).Enjoy my conversation with Sean Cunningham.
linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This March, “VHS Cover Art” Month returns at Catching Up On Cinema! Every week we'll be reviewing films with incredible cover art from the VHS era. This week, Trevor and Kyle review Steve Miner's, House (1986)! Produced by veteran horror producer Sean S. Cunningham, and written by a young Fred Dekker, House (1986) is a strange supernatural “horror comedy” that feels like a lame imitation of superior contemporary genre films such as Evil Dead (1981), Poltergeist (1982) and Ghostbusters (1984). A tonal mess of a film, House features some decent makeup effects, but the editing lacks energy, and the movie sadly fails to deliver engagement in the form of chuckles or scares. Despite all of these liabilities, House's biggest stumble comes in the form of its clumsy and half-hearted exploration of the Vietnam war and the trauma inflicted upon those that participated in that conflict. While it is apparent that at some point in production, aspects of the script were likely meant to be using supernatural shenanigans and frequent disruptions as some form of nonliteral metaphor for the protagonist's struggle in allowing himself to confront his repressed trauma, (e.g. writing a book about the war) the execution of these elements in the finished film are confusing, underdeveloped, and often lame. Often feeling like a hodgepodge of interesting ideas that found themselves cobbled together in exactly the wrong film, House is a cult horror-comedy that this author sadly found very little enjoyment in viewing, and will likely only remember for its decent effects work and the inherent novelty factor found in its cast of (at the time) contemporary TV stars.
