This week's pick comes from JAC, who takes us back to 1989 for Best of the Best, directed by Robert Radler and developed from a story by Phillip Rhee and Paul Levine. Made for an estimated $5 million, the film assembled an impressively serious cast for a martial arts tournament movie, including Eric Roberts, Phillip Rhee, James Earl Jones, Sally Kirkland, Chris Penn and Louise Fletcher. Production used locations in both the United States and South Korea, although some of the supposedly Korean tournament action was actually shot at the Olympic Stadium in Los Angeles.Released in the US on 10 November 1989, Best of the Best wasn't exactly a box-office champion, taking around $1.7 million domestically against that estimated $5 million budget. Critics weren't especially kind either, but the film found a much more appreciative audience on home video, where its mixture of martial arts, training montages, big emotions and unashamed late-'80s sincerity helped turn it into a cult favourite. All three sequels were rated R.There's a spelling mistake in Alex's National Team acceptance letter: "Congratulations" is written as "congradulations." This week on Dewey Pod Monster, we close out "April and the Threequel" by finally confronting the most threatened episode in show history: Clerks III. We've been dreading this one for four years. It was worse than we remembered.In this episode, we discuss:The Nostalgia Cash-In That Went Too Far — Clerks III is essentially Kevin Smith remaking his own movie while reselling a heart attack story you've already heard on his podcast and live tour. We've paid for this content before.Comedy That Forgot to Be Funny — The film swings for emotional drama without earning it, leaving beloved characters stranded in a tone that doesn't fit them. It's neither funny enough to work as a comedy nor written well enough to land as a drama.The Rosario Dawson Problem — She was one of the best things about Clerks II, and here she's reduced to a ghost who tells her grieving husband she's sleeping with celebrities in heaven. It's a baffling choice that retroactively damages the previous film's ending.Who the Hell Is This Movie For? — Too recycled for longtime fans and too niche for newcomers, Clerks III only seems to work if you watched it live with Kevin Smith in the room. Sean watched it. He has regrets. He's still going to watch more Bruno Mattei films.Hellmare Trailer (Youtube)— John got an early look at this upcoming horror film from local filmmaker Victor Gabriel (of Blood Gorge and Cruel), and he's genuinely excited. Meta horror elements, great visuals, real craft on display. A small premiere is coming — watch this space.Movie Theater Massacre (Tubi) (2023) — Shot at the historic Redford Theater in Redford, Michigan, this COVID-era local slasher features a butter knife as a murder weapon and a Linnea Quigley cameo. It's not great. It exists.Scanner Cop 2 (Youtube) (1995)— John watched it. His dog was audibly disturbed by the psychic screaming noises. Kane Hodder is in it. It's a clash between the ultimate supernatural slasher and the movie that dared to break the fourth wall before "meta" was a household word. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) Directed by John Carl Buechler, The New Blood is often cited by fans as the "Jason vs. Carrie" installment. This is the monumental debut of Kane Hodder as Jason Voorhees, bringing a newfound physical intensity and rage to the role that defined the character for the next decade. The story follows Tina Shepard, a girl with telekinetic powers who accidentally resurrects Jason from the bottom of Crystal Lake while trying to bring back her deceased father. With a massive psychic showdown and some of the franchise's most brutal practical kills—including the iconic sleeping bag moment—this entry turned Jason into a force of nature that literally required a supernatural match-up to stop. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) Directed by Wes Craven himself, New Nightmare took the franchise to an entirely new dimension. Abandoning the continuity of the previous films, this entry takes place in the "real world," where actress Heather Langenkamp (playing herself) is stalked by a darker, more terrifying entity that has taken the form of Freddy Krueger. It's a brilliant, psychological horror film that explores the burden of fame, the danger of archetypes, and what happens when the monster you created decides to come for its creator. Rick McCallum began his stunt career in 1982, performing a fight scene with Chuck Norris on the film Lone Wolf McQuade, and has more than 75 credits to his name. Rick has performed in numerous action and horror movies, and also has doubled for Daniel Baldwin, Barry Bostwick, Greg Evigan, Oliver Platt, Chris Noth, and many horror icons, including Kane Hodder, Ra Mihailoff and Sid Haig, as well as playing the monster in Deepstar Six, and the title character in the film Darkwolf. Rick has trained actors and actresses in fights, falls, and weapons, including the Comic Con Star Wars Challenge winning short, Saber, which won Best Film and Best Action, and also coordinated the Walking Dead webisode Cold Storage, which won the Streamy Award. Recently, he has worked on features in Australia, the Hamptons, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Louisiana. Rick has also acted in many films, including Naked Gun 33 and 1/3, Hatchet 2, where he played the silent hunter John, and recently in Clint Eastwood's J Edgar. He has also stunt coordinated the Friday the 13th video game. Rick, along with Kane Hodder, are the founders of the Hollywood Ghost Hunters. Rick is also the author of his book “Ghosts Believe in Me” which won the 2020 Paranormal Awards Book of the Year.. Rick recently been seen on the PPV specials The Conjuring House and The Queen Mary Halloween Ghost Hunt, as well as the LA Police Museum ghost hunt. He recently ghost hunted the Old Phelps Dodge Hospital live feed from Ajo, Arizona.
