This week we're making dreams come true with 1997's throwback creature feature WISHMASTER. Featuring a who's who of horror both in front and behind the camera, the birth of the Djinn makes for a fun romp in the vein of not only 80s splatter horror, but also the classic Universal Monsters of yore. With FX from KNB and appearances from Robert Englund, Tony Todd, Kane Hodder, Reggie Bannister, Ted Raimi, the voice of Angus Scrimm along with an executive production credit by Wes Craven, this is a Dream Team of creatives for a B-movie. Mike, Brian and Devaughn are joined by guest John Seavey of the Half Priced Horror podcast but be careful what you wish for, because dreams can turn to nightmares pretty quick. Also, what's with all the smoking?

FREDDY VS. JASON brings together two titans of '80s horror: Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund) and Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger). In a bid to regain his strength through surging fear through the souls of Elm Street, Freddy manipulates Jason to doing some killing on his behalf. However, when Jason starts taking the credit and hacking through more of the available body count, Freddy grows jealous and petty. The fight is on, with a group of teenagers caught in the middle. This movie underwent 17 years of development hell before arriving in theaters. That's 17 years of studios losing and gaining rights to the franchises, installments developed on both sides in lieu of a team-up, a carousel of writers and directors pitching their ideas and ditching the project, and a replacement of one of the most iconic actors to ever don a horror villain's mask. Kane Hodder, you deserve the world. With all this being said, should FREDDY VS. JASON be regarded as a hallmark of the genre? No. It serves best as a sampler of what both franchises have to offer: Freddy's surrealism & sarcasm and Jason's massacring lumbering boogeyman. The CGI effects, emblematic of the time, don't always work. They often elicit a laugh. But given that FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V and FREDDY'S DEAD exist? We could've gotten much worse. The fact this exists in this form is a mini-miracle.A massive thanks to Dakota (To quote Tarantino, he's "a buddy who's more than a brother and a little less than a wife.") for requesting this episode. It's part 1 of our ‘New York' series, and we take a slow boat to the Big Apple with “Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan”. A film in which a group of students get ripped off when they hire a “cruise ship”; New York City is a seething cesspool of crime and toxic waste; and Kane Hodder gets to pre-emptively leather the bloke who eventually nicked his job. “Jason Takes Manhattan” has our hockey-masked antihero bludgeneoning his way through yet another group of annoying teens; whilst also ticking off other touchstones of the “Friday…” franchise, such as an over-lit flashback and even a crazy harbinger. Despite this, the film somehow lacks something, maybe it's the fact that we take far too long to get to NYC, or that, by this point, we've seen it all once too often. However, like most good slasher films, as a party movie with friends and/or your recreational substance of choice, it's still a lot of daft fun. Watch (or re-watch) to avoid spoilers and join us
Mike and Tom agree too much about nearly every aspect of this movie to fight like the titular characters do but are ready to do battle when the subject of one of these killers comes up because we're only chatting about this sequel from the Jason perspective. For now that is. That's right, we're talking Freddy vs. Jason! You'll hear how much we think Jason takes a backseat in this film's story and the name we come up with to refer to the other killer of this movie, our thoughts on the rewriting of mythology for Jason and what we think may have happened between the writing and the filming of that mythology and several thoughts on the non-casting of Kane Hodder as Jason in this sequel. The story so far: After stumbling down a mysterious dried-up well and tunneling through the stone walls to search for an escape, the boys have been trapped in a mysterious, underground, 80s-era-inspired VHS rental shop called Moleman's Movie Hole for months. Becoming disembodied, the boys float through space, heading toward whatever the afterlife offers. But space is big, and they have time to kill, so they pop in a ghost tape of Jason X (2001) to keep them busy. The conversation, much like the afterlife, is full of questions like:What's a grundle? What's a good name for the next planet humans will move to?Can Jason beat the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? What will human evolution lead to?And how will humans treat androids when we all have them?Next movie announced every Wednesday. New episodes every Monday. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Francis Galluppi (THE LAST STOP IN YUMA COUNTY) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his debut feature. From playing drums in punk bands before a broken wrist found him with 6 months off and time on his hands to teach himself how to make movies through watching YouTube tutorials… to his musical approach to his filmmaking craft… to the crazy story of how his short film playing at a horror convention lead to him raising the financing for YUMA (in theaters now)… to writing the film's script based around the locations and resources he knew he could get… to how accepting an offer to option his script almost prevented his film from ever getting made… to how he shot in a commonly used location yet made it appear unique… and how he was able to put such an incredible cast together on such a limited budget… Francis' success story will surely inspire every aspiring filmmaker that hears it! The boys also reflect on the 11th anniversary of THE MOVIE CRYPT which premiered on May 6, 2013. Filmmaker Michael Mohan (IMMACULATE, THE VOYEURS, EVERYTHING SUCKS) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and the making of his hit new horror film IMMACULATE (in theaters now). From seeing BACK TO THE FUTURE as a child and how the film set him on his journey of becoming a filmmaker… to going to Chapman for film studies and the indie films that made the impossible dream of becoming a filmmaker seem possible for him… to shooting and editing short films and scenes for actor friends in need of “tape” for their reels… to his trials and tribulations working on various film and television projects on his way to his first feature… to what it's been like working with actress Sydney Sweeney on multiple projects… to how he convinced the IMMACULATE producers to hire him with an extensive pitch deck… to some completely coincidental similarities that IMMACULATE shares with a certain other “neo-Nunsploitation” horror film that's currently in theaters… to his great advice on not relying only on sustainable gigs… and how he created IMMACULATE's incredible final shot… Mohan is certainly having an amazing moment and deservedly so! Also… Adam gets Sea Monkeys again after a traumatic first experience with them as a child, the group shares the first CD's they ever bought, Joe and Michael explain their philosophy on using Letterboxd, and Adam reveals his biggest personal issue with the theatrical poster for his 2010 film FROZEN in this terrifically candid conversation between three filmmakers. Here on The Blind Rage Podcast, FRIDAY THE 13TH month comes to an end. Join us as we wrap things up with 2003's FREDDY Vs. JASON, a movie fans of both franchises had been clamoring for. Sadly, what we received wasn't at all worth the wait. FREDDY Vs. JASON is a mishmash of plot holes, weak performances, bad dialogue, and some of the worst one-liners from everyone's favorite charred villain. There are better quips and retorts in FREDDY'S DEAD. Hell, there were better quips on FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES, for God's sake. Though the movie is deeply flawed, to say the least, its biggest sins were filling the shoes of Jason with someone other than Kane Hodder, and having one of Freddy's victims call him what is probably the most offensive of all gay slurs moments before coming face-to-face with her grisly demise. Eesh. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blindragepod/message
PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Dave Parker (THE HILLS RUN RED, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH, IT WATCHES) returns to THE MOVIE CRYPT to discuss the making of his latest film YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE LET ME IN (now playing on Tubi). From the whirlwind process of being hired to direct the project and immediately shipping off to Italy… to the supposedly “haunted” villa that much of the film was shot in and filming in a real underground tomb… to the challenges and the joys of helming a film as a “work for hire” while still finding ways to creatively make it your own… to the secrets for winning over a new crew… to returning to work with the great Charlie Band and directing PUPPET MASTER: DOKTOR DEATH (2022)… to how to stretch a production's extremely limited resources to create the best possible film… to why editing experience can be so crucial to directing… Dave's experiences from the last several years are an inspiring lesson on how to hang in there when it feels like things aren't going the way you want it to and just how quickly the tide can change. Dr. Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a filmmaker who is working crew jobs while looking to prepare for the moment when he steps into the director's chair, Dave dishes on the food in Italy, and the group nerds out on the 2024 Oscars and the movies they've been digging. Returning to exercise his vengeance as the December champion, author Brandon Getz unleashes ... a goofy, live-action Looney Tunes film. Brian and Steve as subjected to the horrors of ... a caterpuppy? Despite being produced by Sean S. Cunningham, featuring Kane Hodder, having a score by Harry Manfredini, and a having a skeletal zombie horse, House 2 isn't a horror film. It's not even a true sequel. It's a goof off summer camp film to pay some friends and let an FX crew flex their muscles. Someone probably got a nice tax break too. We are going back, back, back to Crystal Lake and into outer space to ask the question what if the original Jason from Friday the 13th faced off against Uber-Jason from Jason X? We talk the origins of Jason X on screen (New Line, Freddy vs. Jason, Jason Goes to Hell, Kane Hodder) and the transition of Uber-Jason to comics via Avatar with Brian Polito, Sebastian Fiumara and Mike Wolfer including scantily clad scientists, topless astronauts, and lots of blood. Plus, we come up with what characters we want to see face off against other versions of themselves. Ep. 119 What if the original Jason from Friday the 13th faced off against Uber-Jason from Jason X?From the Avatar Comics "Jason Vs. Jason X #1" (2005 comic book)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersFollowing up on last week's Jason vs. Leatherface episode, we return to the world of Jason Voorhees courtesy his trip to outer space in Jason X on film and in comics. We go through the very long road to Jason X on screen (and the weird way John Carpenter might have played a role), debate if screenwriter Todd Farmer wrote this as a Friday the 13th film, and talk the lack of deaths on screen. We then switch to comics to talk Brian Polito and Mike Wolfer's versions of Uber-Jason on the page and wrap up by debating what characters we want to face other versions of themselves in horror and comics. And I'm joined once again by Brett Gallman (@brettgallmam, an expert on the film) of Fangoria, Daily Grindhouse, and Oh, The Horror to talk about it. In this episode, we talk about the incredibly long and complicated road to getting this movie made, talk about our favorite rejected screenplays, explain why we're either Team Freddy or Team Jason, the Kane Hodder controversy, the infamous Kelly Rowland ad-libbed line, and the EXTREMELY 2003 nu-metal soundtrack. Adam Green is the creator and writer of the Hatchet franchise, and he shares some great stories about Hollywood, and what it took to get Hatchet made! He details his battle against the MPAA over Hatchet's NC-17 rating, and how that loss completely changed his movie and his life. He reveals what inspired the Victor Crowley character and look, how he comes up with the crazy, gruesome kills for each sequel, and what it took to get horror genre greats like Kane Hodder, Robert Englund, and Tony Todd involved in Hatchet. He breaks down the practicality behind some of his grossest kills like the double chainsaw murder and Tony Todd literally being ripped right out of his skin. And he explains what really happened with Eli Roth and Cabin Fever 2.
