Liz sits down with two female queer winemakers, Krista Scruggs, founder of Zafa Wines, and Kristin Olszewski, co-founder of Nomadica Wines. Krista tells us what it's like to be a black queer woman navigating a primarily white space and how she fell into the industry while Kristin gives us the low down on how she is trying to make wine more sustainable and her days as a Sommelier at some of the country's most famous places. These were both incredible episodes and the full interviews are available on Liz's Patreon! Krista Scruggs has a simple story. She followed her passion for winegrowing and winemaking to learn as much as she could. But like the best stories it’s only simple on the surface. Beneath the surface, her life is connected to ancient lands and ancient seas that traveled and flowed around the world to become fertile islands of wild grapevines, and her life is connected to ancient people who were enslaved and taken around the world to build the history that she is now regenerating with counter-spells.Krista has had the challenge and the opportunity of navigating the wine industry without many, if any, role models who share a similar story. When Krista acquired her property on Isle La Motte, Vermont, she became the 18th Black farmer in the entire state of Vermont, and is one of the rare 1.4% of Black Americans who own land.Because of this, she has been able to write a story that is unique, and uniquely beautiful, with new perspectives and deep connections. Born and raised in California, Krista Scruggs eventually made her way east to Vermont. Along the way she worked her grandfather's farm, took a job with a big wine company, worked harvests in Europe, and cut her teeth at La Garigiste. Krista is a true Vigneronne. She is at the forefront of the "New American" wine revival, working with hybrid grapes, apples, other fruits, co-fermentations, and a commitment to sustainable, regenerative farming along with low intervention winemaking. Do you like Pinot Noir? If so, there are many other light red wines worth getting to know. In this episode, Kathryn and Tug touch on a few alternatives to Pinot, and they drink Mencía, a Spanish varietal, discussing where it grows and how it's unique. The couple also discusses re-opening Esters - the seating, staffing and procedures are all totally new. One thing is certain: everyone will be wearing a mask. Tug is inspired by writer/farmer/visionary Chris Newman of Sylvanaqua Farms in Montross, Virginia. Kathryn gives a shout out to Krista Scruggs of Zafa Wines. "Just Fucking Fermented Juice" is splayed out in big white letter across the back of Krista Scruggs' black hoodie. The slogan both amuses and taunts gawkers. Krista wore the hoodie with slogan while attending the annual United States Association of Cider Makers conference in Chicago in January of 2018, called CiderCon. I don't know if she wore it in the airport on her way to the conference - I am hoping that she did. Don't get me wrong, there is no win in upsetting the delicate minds of society who know nothing about cider. There is however, big gains in making people think or as my cider friends in the UK would say #rethinkcider. She presented on two panels while at the conference, one for Still Cider and another on Cultural Diversity. In this episode 186, she was welcomed as a special guest at the Pomme Boots Society meeting. Krista Scruggs of Zaffa Wine Krista Scruggs is turning heads, but it's not about the hoodie. It is her wines that is catapulting her out into the media spotlight. She has been featured as one of the Top 40 Under 40 Taste Makers 2018 in Wine Enthusiast and Krista Scruggs is Making the Most Exciting, Most Delicious Natural Wines Right Now | Bon Appêtit (Jan 2019). Now living in Vermont, having worked with Dierdre Heekin of La Garista she is making wine and cider fermented with grape skin/pomace under her own label ZAFA Wine. Explore the gray areas of fermentation: the intersection of cider, wine and beer. Co-Ferment was a tasting and panel discussion led by Jordan Werner Barry and Daniel Pucci that focused on the ways that these seemingly different beverages overlap—production methods, farming, flavor, culture, and the language we use to talk about them. We assembled an all-star panel to leads us down this wild path of natural fermentation, where we learned and tasted the differences, and examined the similarities of the tipples we all know so well. Panelists: APPLES Vanessa Varjian - Blackduck Cidery, Finger Lakes, NY. The assistant cider maker to John Reynolds. GRAPES Darek Trowbridge - Old World Winery, Sonoma, CA. A 4th Generation grape grower of forgotten and lost grapes. Darek will also be pouring his wines at the RAW Wine Fair. GRAIN Lauren Grimm - Grimm Artisanal Ales, Bushwick, Brooklyn. A formerly Nomadic and now Bushwick/East Williamsburg-based brewer extraordinaire pushing the limits of expectation. APPLES & GRAPES Krista Scruggs - Zafa Wines, Burlington, VT. A Vigneronne who farms and ferments grapes, forages and ferments apples, and sometimes ferments them together. Krista (and her vinous ciders) were featured on this year's Wine Enthusiast Top 40 Under 40 Tastemaker list. Heritage Radio Network On Tour is powered by Simplecast.

She is joined by her mentor Deirdre Heekin (aka Queen D) from La Garagista Wine and we discuss farming, economics ,creative endeavors, and much more. On a side note... our apologies for the bit of static/interference on some parts of the episode. We are in the process of upgrading our equipment. Should be good on the next episode.
