Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- Hi there! My name is Chris Herron and I'm an audiobook narrator. In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. Since the last episode, The Green Plantain and yours truly visited Greece and Turkey on a tour that took our family to the ruins of Akrotiri in Santorini, Greece. Akrotiri is not a place of fantasy; it is a prehistoric city whose excavation takes its name from a modern village set on a nearby hill because the site's name in antiquity is not known. This is a historical fiction story of friendship and serendipity in antiquity and modern times. The young girl's name is Eleni, a nod to our excellent guide in Athens. In this 101st episode of Sonitotum with Matthew Wayne Selznick, the podcast about making stuff (mostly writing), finding success as we each define it for ourselves, and staying healthy and sane in the process… it’s a conversation with science fiction author AJ Super! AJ Super is the author of the Seven Stars Saga, a trilogy published by Aethon Books and Blackstone Audio. Writing full time, they devour fantasy and science fiction in every medium, and even experiment with writing and reading other speculative fiction now and again. They earned two Bachelors’ degrees from the University of Idaho in the Creative Writing and Theater programs, and they have been an author since they were old enough to write (and illustrate) a stapled-together ABC book, which is still packed away in a box of childhood memorabilia. AJ is inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin, Anne McCaffery, Octavia E. Butler, Mercedes Lackey, and other amazing female science fiction and fantasy authors. They are active in several different writing communities and an SFWA member. They currently live in Idaho with their fuzz-brained kitties, supportive spouse, and a ridiculous collection of slippers. ~ from AJ Super’s official site Across this evergreen conversation we talk parental influence, everyone’s emo phase, writing for the ADHD reader, the negative consequences of a fast book release schedule, the ol’ planner / pantser dilemma, the meaning of art, emulating our literary heroes, maintaining a healthy creative (and life!) routine, and much, much more. This episode was recorded on May 28, 2024. The conversation with AJ Super was recorded on January 22, 2024. Links and Topics Mentioned in This Episode AJ Super’s publisher is Aethon Books. Their audiobooks come from Blackstone. Visit AJ Super’s Patreon page! A few non-genre authors come up in our discussion: Flannery O’Connor Raymond Carver Charles Bukowski In particular: Factotum, Love is a Dog from Hell, and The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills Ernest Hemingway F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby Sun Valley, Idaho, where Hemingway is buried. I bring up Julian May‘s work as an example of wonderful books that, due to changing social mores, may be overlooked today. Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sax Rhomer, too. That favorite James Baldwin quote of mine is mentioned via Octavia Butler’s (likely unintentional) paraphrase. Next episode: a solo update and news episode. If you've been following along at home, you know that ManuscriptWIshist.com version 4.0 just launched. And while it's new, and shiny, and lovely, it's ten years in the making. This is the miraculous-feeling story about how we got from Tumblr to Wordpress blog to site where agents and editors can login and make their own updates—the only way we'd still exist, because doing everything manually quickly became impossible. We'll hear from Mike Chen and Sierra Godfrey, now multi-published authors, who (we know! We can't believe it either) saw Jessica's sad “Does anyone know how to fix websites?” tweet, and generously offered to help. They made the site beautiful, sustainable, scalable, and—frankly—possible, going forward. We also hear from Caitlin O'Connell, now an editor at Marvel, about her days running the backend of the site when it was still run almost entirely by humans. You may have thought it was tech, but it was Caitlin—with her delightful kindness and willingness to help writers, agents, and editors alike—who made all version 2.0 possible. Plus, we talk about the MSWL party with 90 agents and editors, and how it felt to be in that room with the people dreaming loudly on the internet. Mike Chen is the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Brotherhood, Here and Now and Then, Light Years From Home, and other novels. He has covered geek culture for sites such as Nerdist, Tor.com, and StarTrek.com, and in a different life, covered the NHL. A member of SFWA, Mike lives in the Bay Area with his wife, daughter, and many rescue animals. Follow him on Twitter to see pictures of his corgi: @mikechenwriter Sierra Godfrey is the author of A Very Typical Family and The Second Chance Hotel (Sourcebooks). She was born in Santa Cruz, California and has lived many places, including Santorini, Greece. She loves hiking, watching soothing British farmland shows, and thinking of stories about messy families. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family, which includes a dog, two cats, and a turtle, all of which seemed like a good idea at the time. Find her at sierragodfrey.com or @sierragodfrey on Twitter and Instagram. Caitlin O'Connell is an Associate Editor at Marvel and writer from northern New Jersey. She specializes in YA and children's literature, but has a great love of all stories that are well told and inviting. When not writing or reading, Caitlin can usually be found drinking tea under a pile of cats or hand-sewing historical costumes for fun. You can follow her on Twitter @Caitlin_Renata or, to learn more about her writing and editing, visit caitlinroconnell.com.

Listener, this is part one of a two-part series on the many crimes of science fiction authors. Let's not sugar coat it. The sexual abuse of children committed by science fiction authors. We're going to talk about the Science Fiction Writers of America. How I feel that they're hypocrites. How the image the SFWA has cultivated doesn't gel with the facts. Monstrous people that have been given the prestigious title of Grand Master and never denounced for their evil. Special thanks to Moira Greyland. Submission guidelines can be found at http://www.TallTaleTV.com ---- About Tall Tale TV ---- My name is Chris Herron, and I narrate audiobooks. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. They say the strongest form of advertisement is word of mouth, so I provide a video to a platform of readers to help get people talking. Help them spread the word.
