Docn' - A Celebration of the Music Documentary

Docn' is back! This lost episode was taped two years ago upon the holiday season release of Peter Jackson's Get Back.  Divided into thirds and running nearly eight hours, Get Back is a look at the beginning of the end of the Beatles. The documentary is doubly successful: first, it complicates and challenges the conventional narrative for why the band broke up (Yoko, bickering) while establishing entirely new questions about what was really happening between these four bandmates. We watch as an arbitrary deadline - for a film, or show, or movie, or something - slowly approaches. The Beatles are then forced to decide if they will continue on at all - and, if so, how.  What's surprising about Get Back is how enjoyable it really is to see one of the most over-scrutinized musical acts of the 21st century simply being…themselves. George is often self-deprecating and brittle; Paul is intensively creative and ambitious; John is an endless cutup; Ringo is hungover and/or hesitant. But when they all go up on that roof, the reservations and mythos crumble. Joining us to talk Beatles for this very special episode is Leah Churner, co-host of The Horticulturati, a talk show about landscape design and gardening. Docn' Podcast also celebrates the release of Chalk Diary, a collection of essays by our very own Adam Schragin!

In this roundtable, we talk about drafting and drawing with Lisa Nunamaker, of Paper Garden Workshop, and Amy Fedele, of Pretty Purple Door, two fabulous garden educators who offer online courses in landscape graphics. Leah took courses from both instructors this year -- Lisa's Garden Graphics Toolkit and Amy's Great at Procreate.  We discuss why the fundamentals of hand-drafting remain so valuable to the design process; the role of digital design programs like AutoCAD; and how tablet apps provide a new, hybrid avenue of digital hand-drafting.  Then we turn to to the subject of emotional baggage: Why is drawing so scary for so many adults? How can we gain confidence as creatives and develop our own unique visual style?  Mentioned in this episode: the tablet apps (Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Morpholio Trace, Concepts); The Creative Habit by Twila Tharp (2006). On this episode, we'll examine the relationship between natural history and social history. Join Leah as she sits down with park ranger LaJuan Tucker to talk about the conservation of urban wildlife, and how changing societal attitudes determine how we relate to our landscapes. LaJuan will explain how, in recent years, Austin's Parks and Recreation Department has implemented a new mandate to protect pollinator habitats, even when that means sacrificing the "manicured" look of the park in high-traffic areas.  We'll also zoom out and talk more broadly about the philosophy of conservation today. How should our parklands be used, and who gets to decide? Should we strive to preserve "native" landscapes, or build more community gardens? And how do we reconcile the romance of the Texas landscape with the racist realities of our past? We'll talk about the lingering effects of Jim Crow in Austin, from actual monuments to the Confederacy, to present-day structural inequality. And we'll hear about LaJuan's personal mission to encourage more young Austinites of color to seek careers in environmental conservation and city planning. Here, and in upcoming episodes as well, we'll begin to engage with the paradox of Austin as an environmentally progressive, yet socioeconomically segregated, city.  For a map of the many sites discussed in this episode, along with the full transcript, photos, and more, visit hothousepodcast.com. While you're there, sign up for the newsletter to get bonus Hothouse content! Email the show with plant questions and feedback at info@hothousepodcast.com and follow us on Instagram @hothousepodcast. This interview was recorded in April 2018 at Permanent RCRD Studios in Austin, Texas.
