Ram Dass explores the culture surrounding LSD in 1977, and how he has no desire to legislate how other people live their lives. He shares his guru's instructions for using the “yogi medicine” and talks about whether or not it's important to have a guide for psychedelic experiences. Finally, Ram Dass cautions that “getting high and seeing” is only one part of the process of change, and there are inner processes necessary to bring about change in life. He discusses the cultural evolution brought about by psychedelics and the shifts in consciousness he sees taking place. The Ram Dass community gathers regularly to engage in meaningful discussions about the podcast. We invite you to join us and share your curiosities, insights, and wisdom. Although illegal as a Schedule I drug in much of the United States and beyond, two states have approved use of psilocybin mushrooms in therapeutic settings, and many more states are reviewing their policies. Schedule I drugs are defined as drugs with a high potential for abuse or drugs with no recognized medical uses. However, psilocybin mushrooms have had numerous medicinal and religious uses in dozens of cultures throughout history and let's face it, mushrooms are not addictive. Paul Stamets is one of the leading advocates worldwide for opening up the possibility of legalizing. Paul introduces listeners to several key mushroom species, and beyond psychedelics they have important medical and therapeutic uses in treatment of diseases. He emphasizes the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge with modern science, revealing how traditional practices can inform and enhance our approach to health and wellness. With a focus on the potential of psilocybin mushrooms to address mental health challenges and promote community healing, Paul inspires hope for a future where fungi play a crucial role in both personal and planetary health. Roger is a pioneer in the field of Mycology, having dedicated over a decade of his life to perfecting the art and science of extraction, concentration, and product formulation. These medicinal mushrooms saved his life and led him on a personal journey of discovery, which he credits with transforming his life, and thus sparked a relentless pursuit of knowledge in mycology, alchemy, and sustainable agriculture. Holding a degree in Sustainable Agriculture and deeply immersed in the study of mycology since 2012, Roger combines cutting-edge scientific techniques with ancient wisdom from alchemy and the esoteric arts to craft the most potent and bioavailable mushroom products on the market. His passion for sustainability and quality is evident in every step of the process, from sourcing the finest ingredients to meticulously refining extraction methodologies.Ken has spent over 24 years immersed in holistic medicine, permaculture, and mycology. A visionary in the culinary and functional mushroom industry, he founded three mushroom companies, including the Chicago Mushroom Company where Ken raised the bar in culinary mushroom cultivation as the primary supplier of premium mushrooms for fine dining in Chicago before partnering with Roger Holden to focus on the healing power of medicinal fungi. Guided by fungi as his greatest teacher, Ken has studied with legends like Paul Stamets, Peter McCoy and Robert Rogers. His passion lies in cultivating mushrooms, educating others, and advancing the transformative potential of fungi to heal individuals and communities alike.Fruiting Bodies was born from passion, experience, and a shared vision to create the highest quality functional mushroom products. It is the culmination of two unique journeys that led Roger and Ken to a powerful partnership dedicated to health, sustainability, and the transformative power of mushrooms.Roger's path to functional mushrooms was deeply personal. As a child, he faced severe digestive issues and was prescribed a myriad of pharmaceutical drugs, only to see his health deteriorate further. In high school, he suffered from an extreme case of mononucleosis that left him bedridden for over a year, leading to depression, chronic fatigue, and a slew of other health complications. He struggled with ADHD, concussions, Lyme disease, and the side effects of prescription medications. It wasn't until he discovered functional mushrooms—starting with Reishi—that his life began to change. Seeking affordable and effective natural solutions, he started making his own tinctures, and soon, his symptoms began to fade. By the time he returned to college, he was in the best shape of his life. His journey led him to study sustainable agriculture and food production, work with industry leaders like Tradd Cotter, and eventually launch his own functional mushroom company, Mushroom Magic LLC, in 2020. With a mission to provide clean, ethical, and potent mushroom supplements, Roger dedicated himself to bridging ancient knowledge with modern applications.Ken's journey took a different but equally powerful route. For much of his early life, he struggled with unhealthy habits, chronic pain, and an overall disconnection from true wellness. He spent years caught in patterns of stress, poor health, and survival mode until a dramatic shift in his late 30s led him to rediscover himself. Through personal transformation, Ken became obsessed with health, wellness, and the interconnectedness of soil, food, and community. His studies in horticulture, permaculture, and sustainable agriculture deepened his appreciation for mushrooms—not just as food or medicine, but as a crucial component of ecological restoration. Ken started growing mushrooms, launched Chicago Mushroom Company, and worked with chefs, environmentalists, and urban agriculture pioneers to bring mushrooms to the forefront of sustainable food and medicine. His frustration with the low quality of many functional mushroom products on the market fueled his desire to find a partner who shared his commitment to potency, sustainability, and integrity. That's when Ken heard Roger's interview on the Mycopreneur Podcast. Immediately, he knew he had to reach out. Their first conversation lasted nearly seven hours—an in-depth discussion about mushrooms, health, sustainability, and their aligned visions for the future. They quickly realized they were not only kindred spirits but also the perfect partners to revolutionize the functional mushroom industry. From this meeting of minds and missions, Fruiting Bodies was born. Merging Mushroom Magic and Chicago Mushroom Company, Ken and Roger set out to create the most potent, effective, and ethically sourced mushroom products on the market. Every tincture, extract, and supplement they produce is rooted in science, tradition, and a commitment to people and the planet. Fruiting Bodies is more than just a brand; it is a movement dedicated to healing, education, and empowerment.Ken and Roger's story is one of resilience, discovery, and purpose. Together, they continue to push the boundaries of functional mushrooms, ensuring that the products they offer are not just good—but truly life-changing.Episode Highlights▶ How Roger's health struggles led him to discover mushrooms, while Ken transitioned from a corporate background to a passion for them▶ Why mushroom essences work on the shadow aspects of ourselves, and how trusting yourself is key in the healing journey▶ How mushrooms are safe, but introspection is important when using them for healing, which is both physical and emotional▶ How functional mushrooms are becoming mainstream in health products, with mushrooms being the original medicines, not alternatives▶ How mushroom essences enhance dream work and integration, and education is crucial for consumers to make informed choices.▶ How quality extraction methods are vital for mushroom efficacy, and mushrooms have the potential to heal both people and the environment▶ How the mushroom market is unregulated and chaotic, but how mushrooms can help with micro-remediation and environmental cleanup▶ Personalized approaches to mushroom use are essential for maximizing their benefitsKen Mycelium and Roger Holden's Links & Resources▶ Website: www.fruitingbodies.co▶ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fruitingbodies.co▶ Instagram: https://www.instgram.com/fruitingbodies.co Download Beth's free trainings here: Clarity to Clients: Start & Grow a Transformational Coaching, Healing, Spiritual, or Psychedelic Business: https://bethaweinstein.com/grow-your-spiritual-businessIntegrating Psychedelics & Sacred Medicines Into Business: https://bethaweinstein.com/psychedelics-in-business▶ Beth's Coaching & Guidance: https://bethaweinstein.com/coaching ▶ Beth's Offerings & Courses: https://bethaweinstein.com/services▶ Instagram: @bethaweinstein ▶ FB: / bethw.nyc + bethweinsteinbiz ▶ Join the free Psychedelics & Purpose Community: / psychedelicsandsacredmedicines

From identifying wild berries to mastering the art of cooking over an open fire, Hank's expertise will elevate your outdoor cooking game. Plus, we'll get a glimpse into his fascinating journey from political journalism to becoming a full-time hunter, fisherman, and gatherer. Get ready for an insightful and delicious adventure with Hank Shaw! Episode Chapters with Hank Shaw on Hunt Gather Cook 2:40 - Hank talks about his lifelong connection to fishing, stemming from his family background in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He recalls childhood memories of fishing and eating seafood. 5:54 - We delve into Hank's journey to becoming a notable figure in the cooking world. Hank recounts his early career as a restaurant cook while attending college and graduate school. He later transitioned to journalism, covering politics extensively, including two presidential campaigns. Since 2010, Hank has pursued food writing full-time, authoring five cookbooks with a sixth in progress. His blog and publications have allowed him to sustain a successful career in the culinary arts for over 14 years. 8:42 - Hank's first book, "Hunt, Gather, Cook" was based on his blog and published in 2011. He then authored "Duck, Duck, Goose" in 2013, followed by "Buck, Buck, Moose" in 2016, the first book he fully owned. Subsequent titles include "Pheasant, Quail, Cottontail" in 2018 and "Hook, Line, and Supper" in 2021. 12:08 - Hank gives valuable tips on frying fish. He emphasizes that certain types of fish, specifically fatty and soft varieties like trout and salmon, are not ideal for frying. Instead, he recommends whitefish, which are leaner and firmer, for better frying results. One critical advice he offers is to use high heat when frying, as insufficiently hot oil leads to greasy food. Properly heated oil sets the batter and cooks the fish from the inside out, preventing oil from seeping in and making the fish soggy. 15:11 - For cooking trout, Hank suggests using smoke and fire because trout, particularly wild trout, are fatty and soft. He mentions methods such as smoking, smoke roasting, and grilling. He highlights the importance of using a clean, hot, and oiled grate to prevent the fish from sticking, which is a common issue when grilling fish. Hank advises against fiddling with the fish on the grill, noting that once the fish can be moved easily, it's ready to be flipped, and typically, he only flips the fish once. 21:22 - He discusses the nuances of cooking wild game, particularly focusing on venison. He touches upon common mistakes made by novice cooks, such as overcooking tender cuts and undercooking tougher parts. Hank emphasizes that proper cooking techniques are crucial, providing tips like letting the meat rest and using pan sauces to finish undercooked cuts. 25:17 - Hank ranks different types of fuel for grilling. He advocates for wood as the best option due to its flavor and smoke, followed by lump charcoal, briquettes, and propane. He also underscores that wood provides the best results, but requires more effort and skill. 27:51 - He talks about how he cuts wild game. In cutting deer, he would take the backstrap off, clean it up, and cut it into lengths. 29:47 - He explains the step-by-step process of doing the finger test for doneness for cooking meat. 31:40 - We talk about the safety concerns associated with eating raw fish, particularly focusing on sushi. Hank emphasizes that the primary vector for tapeworms in the US is trout sushi and strongly advises against eating raw trout unless it has been properly frozen. He also touches on the risks associated with eating freshwater salmon, which can carry tapeworms once in rivers. Hank recommends freezing the fish for about a week to ensure its safety for raw consumption. He also notes that other species of fish may not require such precautions. 33:54 - Hank explains the difference between pelagic and benthic fish. Pelagic fish, such as tuna, mackerel, and bluefish, live in the middle or top layers of the water, whereas benthic fish, like flounder, live on or near the bottom. 37:18 - Hank discusses his book "Hunt, Gather, Cook," describing it as a primer on various wild activities like fishing, foraging, and hunting. The book aims to inspire and provide foundational knowledge for those looking to delve into these fields, whether they are experienced in one area or new to another. 38:51 - For those in the Midwest or the East, Hank recommends the books by Samuel Thayer which he says are some of the best foraging books. 40:48 - Hank mentions that he has a course on venison through an online course called Outdoor Class. In addition, he hints at an upcoming fishing course that has already been filmed and is expected to be released soon. 42:33 - To help you identify plants on your hike or outdoor trip, Hank suggests a few books, including one by H.D. Harrington called "Edible Native Plants of the Rocky Mountains". He also highlights "Botany in a Day" as a valuable resource for learning basic plant knowledge. 44:30 - Hank emphasizes the importance of clinical identification in mushroom hunting, using a method called "keying out," where you follow a series of if-then statements to accurately identify a species. This precise approach helps prevent mistakes that could arise from over-relying on instinctual pattern recognition. He also recommends books by Paul Stamets, a renowned expert on mushrooms, and mentions that Michael Pollan has also written a book involving mushrooms. 46:35 - Hank offers useful advice on identifying edible berries. He explains that any berry that looks like a blackberry or raspberry, with its compound fruit structure, is generally safe to eat. He also mentions that berries with a star-shaped mark on the bottom, like blueberries, are part of the Vaccinium clan and are all edible. This star mark is a reliable indicator of whether a berry is safe to consume. 51:01 - We talk about cooking methods for surf perch, a type of fish that can be challenging due to its mushy meat. Hank suggests deep frying the fish after scaling, slashing, and dusting it with cornstarch, which produces a good result. He also recommends making fish cakes from skinless fillets for a different preparation method. 53:49 - Hank clarifies that buying wild game has been illegal in the US for over a century, but farmed game is available. When buying fish, he suggests visiting good fish markets, particularly in areas like the Pacific Northwest and the Twin Cities, where places like Brookies offer excellent quality fish. Hank also recommends Asian markets for high-quality fish, though cautioning that one must be able to identify fresh fish. 55:06 - He explains how to determine the freshness of a fish, emphasizing that the fish should look as if it just came out of the water. Key indicators include bright eyes that are not sunken or clouded and gills that are a pleasing pink or red color. For fish fillet, Hank mentions the press test: fresh fish meat will bounce back when pressed, although most fish markets may not allow this test. 55:55 - Hank mentions that the most common problem in cooking fish is fish sticking to the pan or grill. To prevent this, he advises that the pan and oil must be very hot, and the fish must be extremely dry. Hank emphasizes the importance of using high smoke point oils like canola, rice bran, or avocado oil. He also shares a crucial tip: when placing the fish in the pan, immediately jiggle the pan to ensure the fish doesn't stick. This motion helps the fish slide, preventing it from sticking to the pan and potentially overcooking. 57:16 - Hank's favorite ingredient to add when cooking fish is wild fennel, but also highlights mushrooms as a versatile option. He explains that mushrooms like morels pair wonderfully with trout, and button mushrooms complement white fish. Hanks likens the combination to music, where fish represents higher, lighter notes, and mushrooms provide a grounding base note, creating a harmonious and complete dish 58:31 - We discuss various aspects of commercial fishing, particularly in Alaska. Hank shares his experience, noting that while he hasn't fished for Atlantic salmon, he has been involved in commercial fishing since his late teens. Recently, Hank has been gillnetting salmon around the Juno area, which he finds rewarding. 1:02:39 - Hank reminisces about the earlier days of his career in journalism, highlighting how politics used to be centered around compromise and debate. Saint Lawrence Nurseries is a specialized tree nursery in New York state, renowned for its expertise in cold-hardy fruit and nut trees with a committment to sustainable and organic practices. The nursery, which was originally founded in the 1920s by Fred L. Ashworth of Heuvelton, NY, was initially more of a hobby and experimental station for Ashworth. Bill MacKentley met Fred in 1971 and they developed a strong, almost familial relationship. After Fred's death in 1977, Bill and his wife Diana purchased the land in Potsdam, NY, where Fred had done much of his grafting and breeding. In 1981, they produced the first official St. Lawrence Nurseries catalog. For 34 years, the MacKentleys cultivated Saint Lawrence Nurseries into a unique and well-loved business, carrying on Fred Ashworth's passion for growing and propagating fruits and nuts suitable for northern climates. The MacKentley, were planning their retirement and phasing out their business around 2015. Connor Hardiman who began working at Saint Lawrence Nurseries years earlier stepped in to take over rather than allowing the nursery to close. He and his wife Alyssa are the new stewards of Saint Lawrence Nurseries and are helping to herald in a new era for the Nurseries. Do note that many refer to Saint Lawrence Nurseries as SLN. The Ups and Downs of Climate and Test Winters Citing from a Cornell University study for 1981, that stated the the the previous 40 years had been the best years of agriculture (good weather patterns) in the world. Of particular note is that moving forward from 81 onward, one can now expect that the climate was returning to normal. Note that this was serval years before climate change was being discussed to the degree that it is today. Says Bill, “We have got to get our act together [in regards to climate change]. Who is Fred L. Ashworth Born in 1898, Ashworth studied the trees that survived the 1938 kill off of apples and studied them very closely. He began the nursery in the 1920s. He also worked with nut trees, potatoes and inspired Bill's career at Saint Lawrence Nurseries. Graham Pechenik, founder and patent attorney at Calyx Law, joins The Psychedelic Podcast to delve into the complex world of patents and their impact on the psychedelic landscape. Find episode links, summary, and transcript here. Pechenik raises thought-provoking questions about the patent system's role in fostering innovation while also potentially hindering research and restricting use. He suggests that the patent system, intertwined with regulatory and healthcare structures, often determines whether groundbreaking substances like psilocybin gain FDA approval. Pechenik also explores concerns surrounding excessive psychedelic patents, comparing the unique approaches of COMPASS Pathways, MAPS, and Paul Stamets. As the episode unfolds, Graham and Paul contemplate the delicate balance between patent protection and freedom of use in the burgeoning psychedelics industry. Graham Pechenik is a registered patent attorney and the founder of Calyx Law, a law firm specializing in cannabis and psychedelics-related intellectual property. Graham has a BS from UC San Diego, where he chose Cognitive Neuroscience and Biochemistry majors—after his first psychedelic experiences inspired a deep curiosity about the bases for changes in consciousness—and a JD from New York University, where he initially pursued interests in bioethics and cognitive liberty. After a decade at large law firms defending and challenging patents for Fortune 500 companies across the agricultural, chemical, pharmaceutical, biotech, and technology industries, including working on several landmark patent cases both at trial and on appeal, Graham started Calyx Law in 2016 to help cannabis and psychedelics ventures design and implement their IP strategies. Graham is also editor-at-large of Psychedelic Alpha, where he writes about psychedelics IP, provides data for patent trackers, and maintains a psychedelics legalization and decriminalization tracker. He is the founding steward of the IP Committee of the Psychedelic Bar Association, where he is also on the Board of Directors, and is a member of Chacruna's Council for the Protection of Sacred Plants. Graham was raised in Oakland, CA, and currently lives in San Francisco. Highlights: Examining the unique patent process for the Stamets Stack microdosing protocol. How to enforce patents on illegal substances like psilocybin. Unpacking COMPASS Pathways' psilocybin polymorph patent. The pros & cons of psychedelic patents. How psychedelic patents could hinder therapeutic expansion. Graham's motivation to enter the psychedelic patents space. Hey fellow passengers, it's Mimi. My most sincere hope is that, by now, I'm growing on you, not unlike a fungus. You know what they say, falling in love is like eating mushrooms, ‘you never know if it's the real thing until it's too late.' Today, my guest is Dr. Michael Beug. If you don't know who he is, you may be familiar with some of his proteges, including Paul Stamets, and many others who studied under Dr. Beug. He taught chemistry, mycology, and organic farming at Evergreen State Collage in Olympia, WA, for 32 years, now retired, but that hasn't slowed him down! He's had a very interesting career and I can't wait for you to hear some of those stories from his life. Fungi are so critical to everything that we do in agriculture. They synthesize a truly limitless array of secondary metabolites and have played a role in the great phylogenetic tree of life since it crept out of the ocean. Dr. Beug is very passionate about the intersection between fungi, chemistry, agriculture, and the particular moment in which we all find ourselves in the modern age. Mentioned in the show... Take Podcast Host Natalie's Survey! Mushrooms of Cascadia Ascomycete Fungi of North America Folks who make the show possible... In this episode of Psychedelics Weekly, David is joined by Kyle, who is finally home after a lot of traveling, to talk shop and dig into the articles they found the most interesting this week. They begin with the news that Paul Stamets now has a species of mushroom named after him (Psilocybe stametsii), then take a look at a recent self-report study called “Prevalence and associations of challenging, difficult or distressing experiences using classic psychedelics,” which aimed to collect data on just how many psychedelic users (in this study, anyone who had ever tried a psychedelic) felt that they had had a challenging or difficult experience. They discuss the results and highlight some interesting data: that LSD was the most commonly associated substance, that smoking cannabis was one of the most commonly reported interventions, and of course, the question of whether or not these experiences were beneficial. They then talk about Synthesis Institute closing its doors, the possible hope Synthesis could have, and the sadness in this – when businesses fail, it's easy to look at numbers and profit margins and be dismissive, but we forget the people involved; not just at Synthesis, but the hundreds of would-be students. And lastly, they look at an article about a California-based startup called the Reality Center, which uses a combination of pulsing lights, sounds, and vibrations to create a drug-free but seemingly very psychedelic experience, reminding us yet again that you do not need a substance to achieve non-ordinary states of consciousness. www.psychedelicstoday.com

IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™...… you'll learn how your cells, mitochondria, immune system, sleep patterns, inflammation, nerve growth pattern, and energy levels all benefit from mushrooms. These fungi are full of compounds and nutrients that your body will love. There's a whole lot of science behind this now.In this special podcast edition, you'll hear how two mushroom experts are studying and harnessing the amazing powers of mushrooms for the deepest parts of human biology and the natural environment. Paul Stamets, is a speaker, author, mycologist, medical researcher and entrepreneur. He's considered an intellectual and industry leader in habitat, medicinal use and production of fungi, and he considers himself a “mycological warrior.” He's spent over four decades in the Pacific Northwest studying and researching the world of mushrooms. Listening to him describe, decode and illuminate the workings of the mushroom world is an enthralling experience, indeed. He says we're intertwined with mushrooms at a cellular level. He believes that habitats have immune systems—just like people—and mushrooms are cellular bridges between the two. Our close evolutionary relationship to fungi can be the basis for novel pairings in the microbiome that lead to greater sustainability and immune enhancement. And from neurogenesis to our microbiome to our mitochondria, fungi are linked to us. He's also making some amazing discoveries having to do with bears, bees, butterflies and biodefense.Mycelium Just Might Save the Bees, And Us – Paul Stamets – #624 Learn more at fungi.com Julian Mitchell, —co-founder and CEO of the Australian-based company Life Cykel—and his team work with mushrooms as innovative food sources and medicinals in Australia. “Mushrooms and mushroom-based foods are going to play a huge role in the future of food,” Julian explains. “They grow quickly requiring very little resources in terms of water, power, and land. They have an amazing nutritional profile, and of course, they are 100% natural.” … “Mushrooms are almost an uncharted continent, with infinite applications not just in food but in biotechnology.”For day-to-day use, you'll want to go with cooked, not raw, mushrooms. For those of you who aren't fans of eating mushrooms, there's an option for you, too: “Having it as a tincture makes it very easy to add to a coffee, add to a tea, add to a smoothie,” Julian says. “It's quite tasteless and at the same time micro-dosing it in small amounts straight into your mouth is a great way to have it as well and absorb it straight into your blood system.” Mushrooms Are Your New Anti-Aging Strategy – Life Cykel #603Learn more at lifecykel.comWE APPRECIATE OUR PARTNERS.
