The WNBA kicked off its new season last week with beauty brands lining up to gain access to the league's growing cohort of fans. In a gold rush that started around 2020, some of the industry's top brands have entered into multi-year sponsorships with the league or its top players. The most recent, Fenty's sponsorship of the New York Liberty, was announced earlier this month and kicked off on Saturday's home game opener with several activations including a "Gloss Bomb glam cam" where fans show off their beauty look. The NY Liberty, a top team in the league, has also received sponsorships from L'Oréal-owned brands Essie nail polish and NYX color cosmetics. Meanwhile, Amorepacific-owned Laneige became the Phoenix Mercury's official sponsor last year, mass hair-care brand Odele Beauty sponsors the Minnesota Lynx, and Glossier has been a league sponsor since 2020. What's more, Youth To The People has partnered with the Seattle Storm, and L'Oréal-owned Urban Decay was the official L.A. Sparks sponsor for two seasons. Plus, the Chicago Sky has partnerships with Covergirl, Olay and hair-care band Jamaican Mango and Lime. But perhaps one of the biggest deals is Sephora's sponsorship of the league's newest team, San Francisco's Golden State Valkyries, who will now play at the newly-renamed "Sephora Performance Center" in Oakland. And this is just a snapshot of the WNBA deals Glossy is tracking. “There was limited broadcast for women's sports [a few years ago], and now we have record-breaking viewership, which has been just absolutely amazing,” said Jacki Gemelos, a former WNBA player and coach turned sports agent. “Major brands rarely built campaigns around female athletes. And now athletes like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Alex Morgan and Simone Biles, just to name a few, are leading campaigns and not just being included.” As previously reported by Glossy, attention from the beauty industry aligns with a sharp rise in WNBA audience attention. Viewership on ESPN was up 155% last season and, within this, viewership among people aged 18–34 rose by 164% and viewership among women increased by 165% year-over-year. Glossy welcomed Gemelos to the podcast to discuss this change and provide context and advice for beauty execs looking to join in on the action. She provides context as to different types of deals, including the average costs and what makes a deal authentic. Gemelos is a lifelong basketball player who spent more than a decade playing professionally overseas and in the WNBA for the Chicago Sky and the Connecticut Sun. She was an assistant coach for the NY Liberty before joining Nike as an athlete community coordinator. Today, she's an agent at prestigious boutique firm Disrupt the Game, where she oversees deals for a roster of top talent. In today's episode, Gemelos discusses everything beauty execs need to know about this cultural shift. But first, hosts Lexy Lebsack and Sara Spruch-Feiner discuss the top headlines of the week. This includes QVC's foray into 24/7 social commerce selling through TikTok Shop, plus a bird's eye view on how the beauty industry did in the first quarter of the year, according to a new report from Circana market research company.

Bob and Mike welcome Andy Bottoms from The Assembly Call to discuss the evolving world of bracketology and what the 2025 NCAA Tournament reveals about the future of college basketball. This episode offers an insider's perspective on how bracketologists approach their craft, the metrics that matter most to the selection committee, and why the drama of bubble teams captures the public's imagination in ways similar to reality television. The conversation explores how conference realignment has fundamentally altered tournament selection, creating a widening gap between power conferences and mid-majors.Segment 1: The Rise of Bracketology as a Cultural PhenomenonAndy explains that bracketology has exploded in popularity partly because the selection process has become more data-driven and terminology has worked its way into mainstream broadcasts (7:00)Mike theorizes bracketology taps into the same psychological appeal as reality TV shows – the drama of inclusion and exclusion captures audience attention (19:00)The committee's increasing transparency through regular updates has transformed selection from a one-day event into a season-long narrative (20:30)Andy describes his process, noting the challenge isn't just analyzing metrics but predicting how a committee of 12 people will interpret them (28:00)Segment 2: Power Conference Dominance and Mid-Major DisadvantagesThe 2025 tournament saw all four #1 seeds reach the Final Four, potentially reinforcing the committee's tendency to favor power conference teams (10:00)Andy expresses disappointment with how top mid-majors like Drake were treated on the seed list, noting how close they came to missing the tournament entirely despite outstanding seasons (59:00)Viewership for the 2025 tournament increased dramatically (approximately 20%), creating incentives for the committee to continue favoring matchups between power conference teams (67:00)Discussion of how conference realignment has made it nearly impossible for mid-majors to build nationally competitive programs as their best players get poached through the transfer portal (67:00)Segment 3: Analytics and Future ImplicationsThe committee's use of metrics has evolved, with predictive analytics (like KenPom and Torvik) becoming increasingly influential in tournament selection (36:00)Teams now have to consider margin of victory in early-season games, creating a difficult balance between building their metrics and managing player minutes (42:00)Andy evaluates whether the chalky 2025 tournament was a blip or trend, suggesting mid-major disadvantages will continue while the dominance of #1 seeds might be an aberration (89:00)Debate about tournament expansion concludes that while it might benefit mid-majors, it would likely dilute the competitive quality and drama that makes March Madness special (94:00)The episode provides valuable insight into how the modern selection process works while questioning whether the system is becoming too tilted toward power conferences. As the hosts note, the fundamental challenge remains the same: win games, beat good teams decisively, and build a strong enough resume to impress both the metrics and committee members. On the mics: Bob Moats and Mike Wiemuth with Andy Bottoms (The Assembly Call)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Hydration practices in the sauna and their effects on performance are examined, alongside the significance of VO2 max and the role of hubs in cycling performance. In this episode, the hosts delve into various aspects of cycling, discussing the significance of bike components, particularly hubs and tires, and how they impact performance. They also explore the cultural aspects of cycling, including a humorous take on beer and its role in cycling events. The conversation shifts to Tucson, highlighting its appeal as a cycling destination, before critiquing a new Ridley drop bar mountain bike, emphasizing the need for better design and components. Takeaways Scott had a strong start but faced challenges during the race. Travel issues can significantly impact an athlete's performance. Injuries often overshadow other aspects of an athlete's life. The hosts share a light-hearted banter about cycling and personal lives. Scott's experience highlights the unpredictability of racing conditions. The conversation reveals the emotional toll of competitive cycling. Viewership of cycling events varies greatly between disciplines. The hosts express their differing levels of enthusiasm for bike racing. Scott's personal life is intertwined with his cycling career. The discussion reflects on the popularity of cycling events and their accessibility. GCN's Perry Roubaix highlights show significant viewer engagement. Race highlights are crucial for audience understanding of events. Formula One's excitement is often overshadowed by its complexity. MotoGP offers a more dynamic racing experience than Formula One. Motocross can be chaotic and hard to follow live. E3 race highlights provide insights into upcoming classics. Pogacar's participation in Roubaix is a significant development. Tire choices can greatly affect performance in races like Roubaix. Riders often have to balance tire width for cobbles and pavement. The anticipation of racing on cobbles adds to the excitement. Mental health is an important topic that can be unpacked in conversations. Cycling predictions often lead to friendly debates among enthusiasts. Naming trends can reflect personal stories and cultural influences. Adoption allows for name changes, but it's a sensitive topic. Experiences with natural disasters can bring communities together. April Fool's Day can lead to playful banter among friends. Casual conversations can reveal deeper insights about life and relationships. Personal anecdotes can make discussions more relatable and engaging. The importance of trust in one's work is highlighted in humorous exchanges. Celebrating birthdays can lead to unexpected connections and shared experiences. Choosing the right cycling shoes is crucial for performance. Laces can be a disadvantage during races due to loosening. Gravel-specific shoes are often seen as a marketing gimmick. Cyclocross shoes are designed for running and cycling. Personal comfort varies greatly among different shoe brands. Finding the right fit is a challenge in the cycling shoe market. Insoles can help alleviate hotspots in shoes. Many cyclists stick to familiar brands and models. Testing shoes before buying is a significant gap in the market. Innovative designs can enhance comfort and performance in cycling shoes. Mavix is still a company, despite rumors of its closure. Lace shoes are preferred for aerodynamics, but have disadvantages. Velcro shoes are underrated for their speed and convenience. Oral hygiene is crucial for cyclists who consume sugar during rides. Cyclists should separate sugar intake on and off the bike for better health. Post-race recovery drinks like Fanta may taste better but aren't the best choice. Hydration practices in the sauna can impact performance and recovery. Maximizing heat acclimation may not be worth the risk of dehydration. Tires are the most critical component for performance in gravel racing. Understanding the role of hubs can help improve cycling performance. Investing in tires is more beneficial than hubs. The performance difference in hubs is marginal compared to tires. Cycling culture often intertwines with humor and beer. Tucson is recognized as a great place for cycling. The new Ridley bike lacks proper design for serious cycling. A production drop bar mountain bike should be purpose-built. Old inventory can lead to questionable bike builds. Cyclists often experiment with different tires for races. The conversation reflects a mix of technical and cultural insights. The hosts share personal experiences related to cycling events. The 97th annual Academy Awards broadcast saw a 1% increase in viewership from last year’s telecast. What’s behind the ratings boost? Might this have any effect on where the awards show lands after ABC’s deal with the academy ends in 2028? Also, is the Disney CEO succession race heating up? Kim Masters and Matt Belloni investigate. Plus, Eric Deggans speaks with Muslim Matchmaker creator Smriti Mundhra about her diverse body of work. She has a slew of dating series spread across streamers, and has made a couple of Oscar nominated documentary shorts, including last year’s I am Ready, Warden. She also talks about working as a production secretary for the Coen brothers on the films O Brother Where art Thou? and The Man Who Wasn’t There.
The 97th Academy Awards drew an estimated 19.7 million viewers, making it the most-watched Oscars in five years and the biggest primetime entertainment show of 2025 so far, according to ABC. A notable boost in viewership came from younger audiences streaming on mobile and laptops, proving that Hollywood's biggest night still commands attention. One of the most controversial films of the night, “Emilia Pérez,” entered with 13 nominations but didn't dominate the way some expected. However, Zoe Saldana emerged as a standout winner, taking home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and sweeping nearly every major award this season. Backstage, Saldana reflected on her journey, saying: “We have an instinct, and that instinct that keeps us from falling or helps us put our hands in front of our face to protect us when we fall—that's the same instinct when you're reading a script or you're meeting someone, and you just know that you're right for that part.” Missed the glamour? Next in Media spoke with Andrew Rosen, an analyst and author of the newsletter Medium Shift, about the struggles traditional media companies are having in catering to younger sports fans.Rosen also talked about the various attempts at recreating sports bundles, and whether we're headed toward a world where all sports are available via streaming, yet fans are more confused and overwhelmed than ever.Takeaways:The Shift from Streaming Wars to RebundlingThe streaming industry is moving past the "streaming wars" phase into a period of rebundling. Companies are seeking ways to package content more efficiently while keeping consumers engaged. The Role of Fandom in Media StrategySuccessful media companies hyper-serve niche fandoms, as seen with the New York Times acquiring The Athletic and Crunchyroll's anime dominance.Legacy Media vs. Digital Native PlatformsTraditional media companies struggle with direct-to-consumer (DTC) strategies, while platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Tubi personalize user experiences for higher engagement. The Future of Sports StreamingESPN faces challenges in making sports content discoverable. Apple is already outperforming ESPN in driving sports engagement through push notifications.AI's Role in Content CreationGenerative AI isn't replacing creators—it's giving them superpowers. Those with storytelling skills will thrive, while others may struggle. Many decision-makers in legacy media lack a deep understanding of DTC logic. A younger generation, raised in the digital age, will likely reshape the future. The Long-Term Future of Sports RightsWhile sports streaming is growing, broadcast TV is still dominant.
