This week it seems that all the news points in the same direction. And it's not that we haven't seen it, and known it, for some time: They want us dead. The Evil Forces that overthrew legitimate 'government' serve 'the prince of this world.' It's been obvious to those with "eyes to see" for a long time. But his week was somehow different. Now that open "Fourth Generation" war is being waged on Americans, even the most deceived are having trouble swallowing the Kool-Aid (or, now, the Bud Lite.) Which leaves a lot to consider.
In this episode, Jurie Giliomee, a fourth-generation farmer from the Bredasdorp area in the Western Cape, shares the story of his family farm and how it has evolved over the decades. We delve into the key decisions that have shaped their success in cash cropping—specifically canola, wheat, barley, and oats—and discuss their innovative crop rotation strategies that leverage farming data to enhance productivity. Jurie sheds light on the unique climate challenges and advantages of farming near the sea, as well as how they manage rising input costs without compromising quality through data-driven approaches. In addition to cash crops, we also explore how Jurie and his father have adapted their sheep and cattle production to meet changing market demands.
*This month in partnership with PPMD* Our Carrier Connections program features a different X-linked condition each month with the goal to increase awareness of X-linked conditions and how they impact the lives of women and girls. This month, we are featuring Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Duchenne is an X-linked disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakening and is one of the most common life-limiting genetic conditions diagnosed in childhood. It is caused by a mutation in the DMD gene, which typically functions to produce a protein critical for muscle structure and function known as dystrophin. In individuals with Duchenne, this protein is absent, leading to the degeneration of muscle fibers over time and progressive muscle weakening. Duchenne is a multi-systemic condition, which means it affects many parts of the body including the heart and respiratory muscles, contributing to cardiology and breathing-related complications. Females carriers are usually not affected with Duchenne or Becker because they make enough of the dystrophin protein. However, they can have some symptoms of Duchenne, such as changes to heart function, mild muscle weakness, fatigue, or cramping in their muscles. Rarely, a carrier has symptoms that are as severe as those of a male with muscular dystrophy. The term “manifesting carrier” is often used to describe a woman who has some of the symptoms of a male with Duchenne. Carrier females have an increased chance of changes to heart function. Because a small percentage of carriers may have serious heart concerns, it is important for all women who are carriers and women who are at risk to be carriers to have regular heart evaluations, beginning in their late teens/early adult years and, if normal, repeated every 3-5 years. Today we are chatting with Alexandra Wells. Alexandra is a 26-year-old Arizona native who enjoys country concerts, watching college football, and doing DIY projects. Carrier Connections is sponsored by Kyowa Kirin and Amgen. For more information about our organization, check out rememberthegirls.org.

In this episode of “The Business of Blueberries,” host Kasey Cronquist, president of the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council (USHBC) and the North American Blueberry Council (NABC), is joined by Chad Reenders, a fourth generation farmer who has been growing blueberries with his family since 2006. He recently started his own blueberry farm, and he farms 120 acres with his brother-in-law. Last year, Vegetable Growers News included Reenders on their list of Fruit + Vegetable 40 Under 40. Reenders is also the president of the Michigan Blueberry Advisory Committee and a passionate advocate for Michigan farmers.“So in farming, it's risky, right? We're pretty much gambling every day with our money, with our income and with all the inputs we put in our farms. And in Michigan, I think two years ago, we were only at about 25% that were covered under some kind of crop insurance. I really wanted to push that number higher. I felt like we could at least get to 50%, if not more, of our growers being covered. I want to make sure that our blueberry growers are covered for the input costs and everything they have out in the field.” – Chad Reenders Topics covered include: An introduction to Reenders, a fourth generation farmer and president of the Michigan Blueberry Advisory Committee.Reenders efforts to promote crop insurance among blueberry growers, and the network he called on to make that happen. What the Michigan blueberry industry looks like today and where it's headed. Dr. Ira Spector is the CEO and Co-Founder of SFA Therapeutics, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company leading the way as a fourth-generation microbiome company to treat inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The first microbiome companies focused on fecal transplants, while the next innovation was probiotics. The third generation took the understanding of the bacteria in the GI microbiome to derive bacteria for each patient. SFA is asking what the bacteria make and their physiological function in order to synthetically make those substances as an effective small molecule drug. Ira explains, "The immune system in the human body is regulated up and down by messengers called cytokines. And long before cytokine storm and COVID came about, we were researching how to control these signals in the body. In particular, what we found is that there are cytokines related to these autoimmune diseases. It turns out that when you do a review across a range of autoimmune diseases, you find the same four or five cytokines related to those diseases over and over and over again. And what we have found are substances normally made in the GI by bacteria that can be turned into drugs that regulate or modulate these immune system signals and return the immune system to normal." "We believe that these have the potential to be used to treat a range of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Our analogy is just as insulin was revolutionary for Type 1 diabetics because they couldn't make sufficient insulin themselves, that patients with these diseases often lack the ability to make these substances. By providing them exogenously as a drug, we can take their immune system back to normal and reduce the inflammation associated with these autoimmune diseases." @TherapeuticsSfa #SFATherapeutics #Microbiome #AutoimmuneDisease #Inflammation #Psoriasis #ImmuneSystem sfatherapeutics.com Download the transcript here

Their riveting conversation looks at: the myths and misconceptions about the funeral director, the sacred responsibility of handling the deceased, the rise in home funerals in our time, the origins of the practices of embalming and coffin burial, the different shades of the "green" cemetery and burial, why there is great value in permanent memorialization, making a ceremony sacred, why simply showing up is the greatest way to support those in mourning, mushroom suits and the controversy around them, the process of natural organic reduction (NOR), and much more.

I can't believe that we are now in the last week of April! Time sure flies fast, and I can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for the Scaling UP! H2O podcast and the Scaling UP! Nation. I also cannot wait to introduce my lab partner in today's episode. She is a colleague, friend, and member of the Rising Tide Mastermind, Jill Cavano. Jill Cavano is the owner of Scranton Associations, AWT's Supplier of the Year Awardee in 2015. Jill started working at Scranton Associates in 1999 and became the owner in 2016. She is also an active member and sponsor of the Association of Water Technologies. Jill is a founding member of the Young Professionals Group at AWT and the Chair of the Business Resources Committee which organizes events and webinars to help business owners navigate business situations as well as grow their technical knowledge. Scranton Associates has been manufacturing water treatment chemicals, serving their customers, and providing good jobs for their employees since 1919. It's often that we see multigenerational companies in the water treatment industry, but Scranton Associates has taken this up a notch by being a fourth-generation company! Today, the Scaling UP! Nation is going to learn the secrets of making a business last for generations. Bottom line: Jill Cavano is going to tell us how growing up in a multigenerational company taught her how to move forward intelligently in business. What are the various brine seal designs? Take this week to think about reverse osmosis brine seals and the role they play. Quotes: “Nepotism is a good thing when it works.” - Lee Cavano “Scranton Associates is there to serve our customers, provide a good job for our employees, and make a profit. Scranton Associates is not there just to provide jobs for family members.” - Jill Cavano “Knowing what Scranton Associates is good at, knowing who we are, and having the heart to be in it for the right reasons has led us to transition through the generations.” - Jill Cavano “If there is one thing that Bob Cavano loved, it was Water Treatment. If there is one thing that Bob loved even more than Water Treatment, it was talking to people about Water Treatment.” - Jill Cavano “At the end of the day, you can be the best water treater in the world, but if your business isn't running smoothly, and your profitability and cash flow aren't where they need to be, (it's worthless).” - Jill Cavano “There is a lot of training and a lot of things that you're able to do, but to be a business owner, the $64,000 question is: ‘When are you ready to lead?.'” - Jill Cavano “In a 4th generation company we needed to keep our relevance, continuity, and keep the core values of what makes us unique and has made us stay in business for this long.” - Jill Cavano “Q: How do you learn how to move forward intelligently? A: Looking back at your history.” - Jill Cavano “No matter what, I'm always moving myself forward and my business forward.” - Jill Cavano “We all don't get it right (in business) 100% all the time, but I feel like change is necessary.” - Jill Cavano “If I could give people advice, I would give them two things. The first thing I would give them is to get involved. The next thing is to have a trusted network.” - Jill Cavano Connect with Jill Cavano: Phone: 440-572-2277 ext 15 Email: jbihn@scrantonassociates.com Website: scrantonassociates.com LinkedIn:company/scranton-associates-inc.
