Gladman discusses form and its possibilities, as well as the artist's struggle to realize the vision of a project. Also, Edwin Frank, author of Stranger than Fiction: Lives of the Twentieth Century Novel, returns to recommend Louis Aragon's Paris Peasant.

The Legendary Ladies are back for some holiday fun! This year, Amy and Kat review the Hallmark film "Friends and Family Christmas", a big deal for members of the queer community hoping to see themselves represented in the mainstream "Hallmark" market. And it is important - so important. But here's the thing....they don't have much else positive to say about the film...and that's where the real discussion begins. Where was the honesty in the film? Was there a lack of care in the filmmaking? And are we, as storytellers ourselves, more inclined to be critical...and does that diminish a film that finally celebrates queer representation as normality in the holidays? It's a surprisingly deep episode from the hosts.  We'd love to hear from our listeners! Do you agree with our assessment of the film? The pre-Don't Ask Don't Tell days in the military were a challenge for members who wanted to serve their country but had to stay closeted. Even during DADT, they couldn't talk openly about their families, received no dependent benefits for their spouses, and risked their careers if they were found out. In this portion of my interview with author Julie Tizard about her book The Road to Wings, she talks about what that life was like and why it was important to her to memorialize it in her book. Thanks so much for listening! Please send positive thoughts. In exciting news, It Started with a Kiss has been shortlisted for the Kindle Storyteller Award. They move on to the topic. WHEW WE HAD A LOT TO SAY. This week, we're discussing lesbian romance novels and, unfortunately, why we just don't like a lot of the ones we've read. Amelia discusses gender exploration and lesbian relationships with gay men. Sarah laments the lack of butches and why Regency era women should be allowed to do rampant infidelity. We both spend a long, long time trying to figure out why the sex is so boring.  Afterwards when Sarah was editing the episode, Amelia asked her to try to make us not sound like evil dark sex perverts. This feat that proved to be absolutely impossible. Media discussed: Olivia Waite's Feminine Pursuits series which includesThe Lady's Guide to Celestial MechanicsThe Care and Feeding of Waspish WidowsThe Hellion's WaltzThe Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley A Proper English by KJ Charles The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky ChambersGideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir The Unspoken Name by A.K. LarkwoodThe Thousand Names by Django Wexler A Little Light Mischief by Cat Sebastian How to Find a Princess by Alyssa Cole*(non-ff media)Think of England by KJ CharlesThe Simple Art of Fortune Hunting by KJ CharlesAny Old Diamonds by KJ Charles*Note from Sarah: I mentioned at the beginning of this episode that I read this book, and then proceeded to say nothing about it. Since I spoke pretty disparagingly of contemporary lesbian romance in this, I wanted to clarify that while I still didn't connect with the central romance of this book, I enjoyed reading the story overall and would recommend it to people looking for a modern twist on a princess-bodyguard story starring two Black woman, a fictional country, a critique of the idea of monarchy while still enjoying some of the trappings, and a fun cast of main and side characters.

Today we are talking about the 2011 film staring Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker, Cloudburst. The Thom Fitzgerald authored and directed film is about a lesbian couple who escape from their nursing home and head up to Canada to get married. Along the way, they pick up a young, male hitchhiker. It is reminiscent of the Netflix documentary “A Secret Love” (2020). The Fitzgerald film is among few who have received 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Take a watch and let us know what you think.
