Trauma therapist , birder, and author of My Summer with Ospreys, Pamela Lowell believes that hope is a great motivator. From her decades of work with people dealing with immense suffering, she's found that nature can be an incredible balm. But when her enjoyment of birds in the marsh behind her home was drowned out by the sound of chainsaws, it turned out that her sanctuary was being clear cut. 100 acres torn down… for a parking lot. Thus began Pamela's foray into activism, birding, and seeking care for the Ospreys who now found themselves at great risk.“Nature can also break your heart,” she said.Join us for this special episode all about Ospreys, but also about hope, transformation, and what a few determined people can do to help save one little corner of the world.Birding links:The Merlin Bird ID AppeBirdiNaturalistThe Thing with Feathers is hosted and produced by Courtney Ellis. The English Language Transcript can be found below But as always we start with Reader's Advisory! The Reader's Advisory for Episode Forty Five is My Summer of You by Nagisa Furuya. If you like the sound of My Summer of You you should also check out: I Hear a Sunspot Limit by Yuki Fumino, How Do We Relationship? by Tamifull, and Love*Com by Aya Nakahara. No bonus segment this week as My Summer of You has not been added to any lists!! Happy Reading Everyone Today's Library Tidbit is all about the City of Largo's plans for a new city hall. The City of Largo has been working towards a new city hall for a few years now. You may have even answered the community survey in 2020. A lot of thought and planning has gone into the new building, both behind the reasons why the City is building a new one and also how the new building will be designed and what functionality it will have. The current and soon to be old city hall was built in 1973 and was built to the codes and work standards of the time. Not only have building codes upgraded significantly since 1973 but our work culture has also changed drastically. One of the City's major concerns with the current and soon to be old city hall is that it is not up to hurricane or flood codes. It's been pure luck that it has not suffered any major damage in a storm. If the City decided to stay in the current and soon to be old city hall it was estimated to cost anywhere between $10-15 million dollars. This would bring the building up to code and also repair the A/C, heating, electrical, and plumbing problems the current building experiences. The cost of building a new building, parking garage, and retail spaces all together is estimated at $58 million dollars. This is a significant difference, however, not only is the current soon to be old city hall in need of major repairs and in danger from hurricanes, it does not meet the needs of the City. The current building was originally built for a financial services organization and not as a city hall. The new city hall will allow the City flexibility in work and meeting spaces and will have a built in ability to grow as needed, something the current soon to be old building lacks. The current soon to be old building is also sorely lacking in accessibility, something that is a priority in the planning of the new city hall. The City cannot truly meet the needs of the public unless the public can access the City. Once the new city hall is finished the plot of land the current and soon to be old city hall is on, along with the parking lot, will be torn down and the plot sold to a private, probably residential developer. This not only will allow to more housing in Largo, but will also help to offset some of the costs of building the new city hall. The current Police Department and Emergency Operations Center will be staying where they are on Highland behind the plot of land the current and soon to be old city hall stands on. The new city hall is being designed and built by the firm ASD/SKY. I will link to their website here if you are interested in some of their projects, but most notable for our area this is the firm that built the new St. Pete pier. ASD/SKY was chosen not only for their modern and clean designs, but also because as a firm they are dedicated to sustainable and inclusive building practices. To build the new city hall the City of Largo has purchased several plots of land on the 400 block of West Bay Dr. The City targeted this area for the new city hall as part of the City's commitment to developing or revitalizing downtown Largo. The City has a vision for downtown Largo as a destination place for the public. As such the new city hall will be a mixed-use building with open green spaces ...

Episode #104 – Podcast Relaunch - The Return Show Notes From Defeat the Drama at Work to Live and Lead for Impact Click To Download Your Free Sliding Into Self Care: Super Simple Strategies for Crazy Busy Lives What I’ve been Up to in the last 3 years My recent Reflect - Refuel and Re-Evaluate Shift in Focus for the Podcast and Why – For now let me tell you – it’s all about serving you better and was sparked by my Re-evaluation work What I’ve been Up to in the last 3 years For the last 3 plus years I have placed a focus on my two boy who had been struggling with major health challenges. They both began suffering from different autoimmune disorders at the same time! At some point I will explore what shared variables could have caused that to happen! Let me just say, it was a crazy, busy, overwhelming, scary, frustrated, heartbreaking, sometimes celebratory time. My oldest son was diagnosed with HSP immediately after symptoms started while my youngest was already suffering the symptoms of PANS, but was undiagnosed. It took a full year to learn what was impacting his health and the road back to health has been long! I’ve been doing advocacy and awareness work since so let me give you a brief description so you can learn a little bit and also get a very small sense about what we were dealing with. With HSP the body’s immune system attacks all the small blood vessels. It is VERY painful! Small blood vessels line the entire digestive tract and are in all of the major organs. For my son this meant that he had terrible pain in his stomach as it contracted and squeezed. He ultimately went into kidney failure, causing his hands and feet to swell to the point that his skin was splitting, his blood pressure skyrocketed and he had blood in his urine. His liver was also enlarged. The first signs were red dots on his ankles and feet, which began to move up his legs. They call it a rash, but it’s actually broken blood vessels. Thankfully, he was diagnosed right away and began treatment that started with a hospital stay in Orlando where we were on vacation, and lasted for months. PANS is short for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. Sounds like a terrible disorder…AND….it is! The body’s immune system attacks the brain, causing inflammation. This creates what looks and feels like OCD, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleep disorders, tics, ADD, brain fog and more. Children regress with handwriting and often are not able to function in school. They struggle tremendously or are unable to participate in school at all. And, accurate diagnosis often takes a long time or doesn’t happen at all. It took a year for us to get a diagnosis and made recovery more challenging. Symptoms show up out of nowhere overnight or in a moment and continue. In our case it was overnight. He woke me before school to share that he hadn’t slept all night and had anxiety through the roof. He was suddenly completely confused at school and unable to understand anything the teachers were saying. He would not leave his bedroom and had weird eating habits. He began losing weight. Traditional treatments that can positively impact psychiatric issues generally do little or nothing as they are not caused by chemical imbalance but by inflammation. That was our experience. And, as my son begged me to find help so he could feel better and be back to himself again, we struggled to find anything that could help. I re-prioritized my life immediately during this period and so, pressed pause on my podcast. I continued work with coaching clients and did some speaking, but my kids and their health definitely took center stage. To give you a small feel, in one year I drove approximately 3,000 miles taking my kids to appointments. Stop and think for a minute about the fear, worry, time, logistical challenges and money involved in that many appointments. And, as I’ve said, I also began spending time speaking and advocating for my kids personally with the school and health professionals and also for others. The CDC estimates that 1 in 200 kids will be impacted by PANS or PANDAS each year and yet many health practitioners and education professionals are not knowledgeable or even aware. My Reflect - Re-Fuel and Re-Evaulation I dubbed the summer of 2018 My Summer of Self Care. I focused on me and took time to Reflect, Re-Fuel and Re-Evaluate. Reflect: We moved fast and furious through 3 years and there was rarely time to think or process what we were going through. It was always just Do – Do – Do. It seemed like we moved from one challenge to the next. So, I took time to just think and remember and feel the feelings that I passed over during the many experiences we’d had. There wasn’t time to sit and let feelings flow. I was too busy and focused on research and trying the next thing. I needed to revisit what we’d been through and cry and take time to feel what was tucked away. I needed to let a lot of it out. And, I always try to focus on the positive so had definitely celebrated small victories and looked for silver linings. But, now I needed time to grieve. I took time for that this summer too. I grieved high school years that weren’t what we’d planned. Time lost. Memories not made. There were no school dances or basketball games. He barely left his room for a few years. I grieved or the college life that isn’t what we’d expected. Refuel: I was completely depleted! There was nothing left for me or anyone else. I could NOT be my best self without a focus on me. I secured down time and used it to just BE, spend time in nature, be quiet, paddle board, water walk. I took actual time off. Normally I celebrate my ability to work from anywhere while blending vacation and some scaled back work. The only true down time I’ve had in YEARS prior to this was my week-long honeymoon in Mexico. We left our electronics back home!! I also used some of the self-care suggestions from this .pdf I created. Click on the link to get your own download! It has a lot of ideas!! My Summer of Self Care – Sliding into Self Care – Super Simple Strategies for Crazy Busy Lives Re-Evaluate: During that quiet time came some contemplation and I began to re-evaluate: My Team – All of my relationships from friendships, professional, those I serve and more. discovered many of my relationships were very one-sided or based on what I could do vs. who I was. I needed to build my Team Kirsten – those who could help fuel me so that I get back to supporting others. My Time – How should I spend my time - My Targets – expand – include all of me – to support and encourage all of you. Out of that re-evaluation came a shift in focus for my podcast. not really a shift, actually, an expansion. New Podcast Introduction - Summarizes it all... You were born with individual strengths and a unique purpose. Don’t let fears, false beliefs, or life’s happenings diminish your influence! It’s time to Live and Lead for Impact! Host, Kirsten Ross, expert of transformation, will help you Defeat the Drama and Overcome the Trauma that can stop you in your tracks. You’ll gain focus, find confidence, and take bold action…. Unleash passionate, purposeful you! Let’s Go!! I realized that to brand my podcast as Defeat the Drama at Work had me feeling fragmented………I kept bumping up against this wall at the edge of business topics with more that I really wanted to share but didn’t feel like I could and still remain consistent to the brand. Over the past few years I began to feel more and more fragmented as some of my advocacy work took me in different directions with my speaking as well. It was then difficult to feel fully authentic when I spoke on leadership topics. I just wanted to be all of me! It started to feel like an identity crisis……. I’ve always had this call to action or wiring to share what I learn to help others. It goes all the way back to high school. As a result, I live my life on 2 tracks all at once. I live and learn as life happens. However, at the same time, I am also constantly looking objectively at my life and organizing what I’m learning with a plan to share what I’m learning to help others. The wiring has me planning that way and then my innate ability to simplify challenging topics helps me turn it into shareable information. My podcast’s focus on work alone was what had me feeling fractured. I’ll say that I’ve been blessed to have had many experiences throughout life that provide me the opportunity to share from a rich collection of life experiences. I actually recently joked with a friend as she marveled at the wealth of life experiences I’ve had, “Well, I’m really hoping God is satisfied with the material I’m now armed with”….I was kind of joking but kind of not! So…….The strategies I share with others have been used by many of my clients but also by me. Ironically, whenever I start with a new coaching client, one of the first things I share is this, “You are who you are in your life and in your work so we can work on either and we’ll impact both.” I immediately give license to my clients to be a whole human being SOOOOOO……Why on earth have I been limiting my ability to be whole too and share from my plethora of both work and life experiences? Ultimately, my goal is to help others make a positive impact and I don’t care where it happens! I believe to the depths of my core that we are each put on this earth with a unique purpose and wonderful gifts to share with others. Too often fears, false beliefs and the happenings of life stop us from fulfilling that purpose and we rob the world of us. With this new title and focus I get to be all of me and can also help all of you! Don’t rob the world of you!! I want to help you defeat the drama and overcome the trauma that can block you! Live and Lead for Impact is about making your difference in this world as all of you from the many different roles that you play. The reality is that you can make a difference as a leader, parent, community member, volunteer, an employee or something else entirely I want to help you make your important impact. Thank you for listening and I look forward to helping you and hearing about your journey to impact! Click To Download Your Free Sliding Into Self Care: Super Simple Strategies for Crazy Busy Lives

Episode 38 – 5/15/18 - Knitting and Running in 30 minutes or less WindsweptMonique on Ravelry and Instagram, windsweptmonique@gmail.com. Visit my new website at WindsweptKnits.com and stream the podcast or read shownotes. Thanks so much for listening! There are 1000’s of podcasts for you to choose from and I am honored you take time out of your busy life to listen to mine. Segments this week include: Stash Acquisition, Wips, KALs, Running Stash Acquisition I held off recording last week because I had no knew knitting and also I knew what I’d be getting for Mother’s Day which is… a spinning wheel! My finger still isn’t healed yet so I’m in a finger brace part-time and still can’t knit nearly as much as I want to, so my boys bought me a Lendrum! They also got the Very Fast Flyer so I can spin cotton. I am SUPER excited and slightly daunted. I’ve tried using it a few times and I’m horrible at the moment. I hold my fiber too close to the wheel to get a good spin in the cotton. Also, I’m used to having the fiber not move while I’m drafting. So balancing the spin with the pullup on to the bobbin is challenging. Luckily, I know exactly what I’m looking for in the spun cotton so a few times I’ve managed to get a small amount of decently spun single on the bobbin. And I cannot tell you how excited I am to have a tensioned lazy kate and the plying head to I don’t have to ply on a drop spindle! Spinning I’ve been working on a new spinning project using Hipstring’s A Beautiful Day cotton colorway. This is from the first shipment of her Cotton Club, which I highly recommend. I’ve only gotten a little bit done but it is coming along beautifully. Jill’s cotton is a joy to spin. Wips Lady and the Unicorn, as I mentioned last week, this is part of a series of medieval tapestries held at the Musee de Cluny. In particular, the one I am stitching is based on the one labelled “A Mon Seul Desir” and a few days ago I finished working on the current chart page! I’m pretty sure I started that page at least 5 years ago. And I’m heading to stitching group tonight so I get to stitch some more. I’ve put a row or 2 onto my Changing Staircases shawl by Jenga Knits. This is a shawl inspired by the Harry Potter books, the way the stiarcases are constantly changing and I’m working on it in Mousou a 100% bamboo yarn from The FiberLady. I’ve also put a few rows on my 52-stitch sock, which is using the Fish Lips Kiss heel and Cobasi by Hikoo, which is a bamboo, cotton, silk and nylon blend. Last but not least – I have a new cast on! I cast on a shawl on Mother’s Day! I’m joining the Addition By Subtraction Mystery Knit A Long, albeit a few weeks late. This is a “mystery” mystery knit along – a murder mystery knit a long to be exact. I love a good murder mystery novel – Agatha Christie is one of my favorite authors – so even though the story is more of a film noire type it’s still right up my alley. I’m on the first clue and I’m having a blast playing a long. I did have to rip back a few rows because my 4th color wasn’t quite working right with the others, but luckily I had another good colorway on hand. This pattern was designed and released along with the LYS day so I chose stash I had on hand from my yarn store that closed, one from another localish yarn store and ordered one skein from an indie dyer that I love, Birdie’s Knits from Florida. Her hand dyed organic cotton is to die for (har har!). The pattern calls for a light color, a dark color, a slightly zany color and a color to tie it all together, all in fingering weight. For the light color I’m using Ito Yarn’s Washi in the Crocus colorway, a pale purple. This is a Japanese style paper yarn, laceweight, and ‘m holding it double. The dark is Ito Yarn’s Kinu, a laceweight silk in the Grey colorway and I’m holding it double. The zany is Your Crazy is Showing from Birdie’s Knits and it is a crazy combination of every color you can imagine but it looks beautiful. Lastly I’m using another Kinu, the Plum colorway which is actually a dark pastel pink, not purple as the name might imply. Knit A Longs Geeky Girls Sheepy Spring AL runs through May 31st and I am a sponsor. TheKnitGirllls’ Stash Dash is an annual WIP-finish KAL. Compete against yourself to see how much yardage you can complete from May 25th to August 27th. Can you knit 1000m? Maybe a whole 5k? The bonus here is that if you knit a row on a project you can cound ALL the yardage for the project. Also, spinning counts, where last year you could count the length of all the singles so a 200m 3-ply yarn would count as 600m. I should note, there are rule changes up for voting at the moment so take that last spinning rule with a grain of salt. In A Sknit’s Batter Up KAL has begun – knit your way through baseball season! I’m a sponsor for this one, too. There are many opportunities for prizes across the season including at the All Star break and during the World Series. Last but not least – My Summer 2018 Be A Helper KAL. I will run this in tandem with Stash Dash because I know a lot of you will be trying to use up every last scrap of yarn for those 3 months and preemie hats and Knitted Knockers are perfect stash-busting projects. Project rules will be the same as last winter – ANYTHING you knit, crochet, weave or spin for ANY charity counts. One entry per FO – you can enter 10 preemie hats will count as 10 entries. Also, donating blood counts as 1 entry, just post a photo of yourself either in the chair, or with the bandaid, or selfie sipping your OJ afterwards. If you would like to offer a prize for this KAL, please PM me on Ravelry or email me at WindsweptMonique@gmail.com, any prizes would be greatly appreciated! I will be offering two skeins from my own stash, the first is a skein from FishKnits Yarn in the At Sixes and Sevens colorway, a self-striping Merino-nylon sock yarn. The other one will be a non-wool yarn TBD; I’m currently debating between a silk yarn, a Japanese paper-style yarn, or a plant-based yarn. If you have any thoughts on which I should offer, please let me know! Running My running training is going well so far. I’m walking my son home from school most days, so that’s 1.5 miles each afternoon. Some days I run, and some it’s just a lazy stroll as an “active rest day”. Yesterday I did my first 4-miler since before I was pregnant with my youngest son, who’s almost 3, and it felt great! Historically, the 4-6 mile area was my least favorite distance but I wonder if that will change since I haven’t tackled that distance in years. I’ve been lax about strength training the last few weeks because of the brace on my finger, but now that I’m only wearing the brace part time I’m going to start strength training twice a week. I need to listen to my own advice eh? Keep strength training!

1960's Poland is our setting this week with Pawel Pawlikowski's 2013 film Ida. You may remember him from 2004's My Summer of Love which brought us Emily Blunt and another terrifying Paddy Considine performance, but this is something completely different. Moody and austere on its surface, Ida is certainly a very original piece of work. But what will Ricardo think? J-Syn is an American recording artist. Growing up in the Jamaica, Queens area of New York, he has the east coast-influenced sound in his music. His popularity is growing underground with single track leaks before the release of his mixtape. His start was as a rapper spitting verses on popular instrumentals. J-Syn's buzz started to grow with some of his dancehall songs, especially with his dancehall remix to Rihanna's Rudeboy. After seeing his music showing up on many websites across the internet, J-Syn decided it was time to release some new rap songs. That's when he recorded and released his Hottest in the Hood freestyle which gained the attention of hip-hop listeners. He then recorded a verse on Lil Wayne's Right Above It, which made his buzz even bigger than it was. J-Syn took it to another level featuring on a verse for the Nicki Minaj song Ice Cream Man. That hard work and dedication is what took him to where he is now. It's definitely not going to stop there. This is just the beginning for J-Syn. His song Motivated, which features T-Pain, is a big hit on the internet and in the clubs. His popularity is beginning to grow, and is steadily increasing across the internet. J-Syn’s becoming an artist that many people are looking out for. His music is also being heard in the club scene and on the radio. He recently recorded a verse for Mims new single Winter’s My Summer, which is now on iTunes. The Prologue to Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, read for you on LibriVox (by Kara Shallenburg). The modern English translation is me glossing the text using the definitions on the Librarius.com page. "Garden of Roses" is by Spring Heeled Jacks Original Swinging Jass Band. Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote "Pied Beauty." "Grow a Garden" is by Kesang Marstrand. Thomas Carew wrote "The Spring." Evidently I pronounced his name wrong: it should be said "Carey." "Flowers" is by Gold Box Kingdom (featuring AMY B). Garden Gnome Liberation provides the free template "Letter to Gnome Captor." "Bees and Flowers/Joe Smallwood's Reel" is by Duane Andrews. Charles Dudley Warner wrote "My Summer in a Garden." Please note that times were different then. However, the difficulties that beset the gardener are pretty much the same now. "Flower" is by Supraluxe. Edgar Wilson Nye wrote "The Garden Hose." "Farmyard Rock n Roll" is by The Jackass-Penguin Show. You may recognize it from my Episode 6. Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote The Secret Garden. "Among the Green Leaves" is by Kesang Marstrand. All the music on this podcast was provided by Mevio.com.
