In this special presentation for Just World Educational's Iran Crisis series, Helena Cobban, the president of Just World Ed, delivered a pre-recorded talk for the Mount Diablo Peace and Justice Center conference in Orinda, California, on April 25th. Unable to attend in person and having to record her remarks more than 24 hours before they would be delivered, she chose to take a long historical view of the crisis by tracing the Strait of Hormuz across 5,000 years of human history. She traced Hormuz's origins as a key node connecting the formative ancient civilizations in the Indus Valley and Mesopotamian, and as a central artery in the vast Indian Ocean trading zone that once stretched from East Africa to China. She described that pre-European world as a thriving, self-governed commercial network with its own norms and technologies, drawing on the work of historian Janet Abu-Lughod. She then walked through the entry of five European imperial powers into that world: Portugal, Spain, England, the Netherlands, and France. She described what she called the "White Supremacist International," a succession of empire-building ventures driven by profit, looting, and the rise of finance capitalism. She traced Portugal's violent seizure of Hormuz in 1507 under Afonso de Albuquerque, followed by the London-based East India Company's takeover of the port in 1622, and drew direct parallels between those colonial methods and what Israel is doing in Palestine and Lebanon today. Cobban closed by urging viewers to work toward curbing Western military power and ending the war.Support the show

Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Terry McMillan: Best-Selling Author, “Waiting to Exhale,” 2001 Terry McMillan, best-selling novelist in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky, recorded February 13, 2001 while on tour for her novel, A Day Late and a Dollar Short. Terry McMillan's novels focus on the lives, aspirations and journeys of discovery of African American women and their families. She hit the ground running with her first novel, Mama, in 1987, which she helped turn into a best-seller. She followed that with a series of novels that helped create a large fan base for her work. Among her best known novels are Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, along with Disappearing Acts, all of which were adapted for film. A Day Late and a Dollar Short is a long novel that focuses on several family members going through a variety of crises and revelations. It was adapted into a television film in 2014 starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ving Rhames, which is now available streaming on Kanopy, the free library app, as well as on other streaming services. This interview leans hard into that novel, with side trips into discussions about black families and black culture in America. As of 2026, she has published ten novels and two works of nonfiction, and according to IMDb is working as a producer for a series of television films under the title Terry McMillan presents. Her most recent novel, It's Not All Downhill from Here, was published in 2020. This interview was digitized, remastered and edited in March 2026 and has not been heard in over twenty years. Poul Anderson (1926-2001): Science Fiction and Fantasy Legend, recorded 1978 Poul Anderson (1926-2001), noted science fiction and fantasy author, winner of seven Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards, in conversation with the late Lawrence Davidson, recorded for the Probabilities radio program on KPFA on June 10, 1978. The late Poul Anderson, who died on July 31, 2001 at the age of 74, is considered one of the greatest science fiction and fantasy authors of the twentieth century. He even has an asteroid named in his honor. Known for his hard science writing, in particular his Polysotechnic League series as well as his Landry series and his Time Patrol series, he was also a master of fantasy. There were also historical novels and mysteries. His career began in 1947 at the age of 21 with stories in Astounding Science Fiction, and he became a professional writer a year later. One of his novels became a film, the Hugo nominated novel, The High Crusade, in 1994 about an alien spaceship landing in medieval England. It is currently not streaming in the United States though if you search, you can find a DVD copy. As with many of the writers of the pulp and paperback era, Poul Anderson is ripe for rediscovery. After Probabilities got its start in 1977, it was natural that the Orinda-based writer would become a guest on the show, This short conversation with co-host Lawrence Davidson, recorded June 10, 1978, was likely Davidson's very first solo interview and came before the show's focus turned to the history of modern science fiction. The interview was digitized, remastered and edited on February 22, 2026, using the Adobe Podcast app to remove noise and echo. This interview has not been heard on the radio since its initial airing. This conversation with co-host Lawrence Davidson, recorded June 10, 1978, was likely Davidson's very first solo interview and came before the show's focus turned to the history of modern science fiction. For some unfathomable reason, Lawrence seemed to keep turning the focus to Anderson's politics, to which the writer finally explained, a little exasperated, that he was basically a story-teller. The interview was digitized, remastered and edited on February 22, 2026, using the Adobe Podcast app to remove noise and echo. . What a CreepSeason 30, Episode 3The Murder of Kirsten Costas(The Inspiration for the 1994 TV Movie Death of a Cheerleader)In the idyllic suburb of Orinda, California, the summer of 1984 was marked by the shocking murder of 15-year-old Kirsten Costas. A popular high school student, Kirsten, was killed by her classmate Bernadette Protti from Miramonte High School. Motivated by jealousy and social pressure, the crime revealed the darker aspects of affluent adolescent life. The murder went unsolved for months, and when the killer was finally found, it shocked the community. I contend that this case was one of the first crimes to highlight the insecurities of Generation X. The incident inspired the made-for-TV film "A Friend to Die For" (1994), later retitled "Death of a Cheerleader." Starring Kellie Martin and Tori Spelling, the movie explored themes of peer pressure, envy, and the price of popularity, giving the case a haunting cultural resonance that still lingers today.Trigger Warning: MurderSources for this episode:The Campo ClawKirsten Costas Wikipedia CNNDiscovery +MurderpediaThe Los Angeles TimesRanker Yahoo NewsPeople MagazineInquisitorScreen RantThe New York TimesThe CinemaholicThe San Francisco ExaminerBe sure to follow us on social media. Is Diddy Secretly Behind False Lawsuits to Undermine Real Accusations Is Sean “Diddy” Combs secretly manipulating the legal system to help himself? In this episode, we break down the shocking lawsuit that initially seemed like a massive scandal—until it fell apart in real time. The lawsuit accuses Maui Police Chief John Pelletier of helping cover up a 2018 sexual assault in Orinda, California, allegedly orchestrated by Diddy. But there's a problem—Pelletier has ironclad proof he wasn't even there. His bank records place him in Las Vegas, 560 miles away, on the night of the alleged crime. So why was his name added seven years later? We're diving deep into the credibility issues surrounding this lawsuit, the lawyer behind it—Ariel Mitchell, who is already being sued for defamation by Diddy—and the growing theory that this case isn't about justice at all. Could this weak, easily disprovable lawsuit be a deliberate strategy to cast doubt on the other, more serious allegations against Diddy? Is it possible that his legal team is flooding the system with false claims so the real ones get buried in the chaos? From the timeline inconsistencies to the shocking lack of evidence, this case raises far more questions than answers. If this lawsuit was set up to fail, what does that mean for the other cases against Diddy? And if Pelletier's name was added for show, who's really pulling the strings? Stay tuned as we uncover one of the most twisted legal plays in modern celebrity history. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? A chilling new chapter has emerged in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs, as explosive allegations and legal counterclaims dominate headlines. In a case that intertwines power, violence, and justice, the latest revelations include harrowing testimony from accuser Ashley Parham and contentious claims from Courtney Burgess, who alleges possession of incriminating evidence against the music mogul. These accounts, combined with Combs's defamation lawsuit, paint a complex picture of one of the entertainment industry's most controversial figures. In a recent interview on NewsNation's Banfield, Ashley Parham recounted a night in 2018 that she claims changed her life forever. Parham alleges she was gang-raped by Sean “Diddy” Combs and three others, including his associate Shane Pearce, at a secluded house in Orinda Hills, California. The property, owned by Combs's former chief of staff Kristina Khorram, served as the backdrop for a harrowing ordeal that Parham describes as a “kill or be killed” situation. According to Parham, the assault began when the group took turns raping her, with Combs allegedly sexually violating her both anally and vaginally. She claims that during the attack, Khorram attempted to insert a copper IUD into her cervix at Combs's behest, an act she narrowly escaped when the device malfunctioned. Parham's detailed account includes an alleged moment of defiance: she armed herself with a knife and considered using it to defend herself against Combs. “He was lying down on the stairs, and I had the knife in both of my hands,” Parham told Banfield. Ultimately, she chose not to act, citing her “moral compass.” Parham's claims extend beyond physical violence. She alleges that Combs, enraged after the assault, used a television remote to further violate her. In a shocking turn, she accused Combs of firing a gun at her, forcing her to flee to a neighbor's home for safety. Despite the neighbor's offer of refuge, Parham returned to the house, a decision she later attributed to a sense of hopelessness. “Honestly, if they had killed me that night, I wouldn't have cared at that point,” she admitted grimly. The Contra Costa Sheriff's Department investigated Parham's claims after she filed a report on March 23, 2018. However, the case was deemed “unfounded,” a conclusion that has drawn scrutiny given the high-profile nature of the accused. Combs's legal team has pointed to this finding as evidence of his innocence, asserting that he has documentary proof that he was not in Orinda on the date in question. “There is no evidence that Mr. Combs was ever even in the same room as Ms. Parham,” his attorneys stated. While Parham's testimony sheds light on alleged past actions, Courtney Burgess's claims strike at the heart of Combs's public defense. Burgess, a former music industry figure, alleges possession of videos depicting Combs in non-consensual sexual encounters, some involving minors. He claims the videos were provided to him by an intermediary connected to Kim Porter, Combs's late ex-partner and mother of three of his children. Burgess also asserts that he received a rough draft of Porter's memoir, which reportedly contained damaging revelations about Combs. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? California takes the lead on trying to require warning labels on social media for kids and teenagers. The legislation announced today comes amid growing concern about the impact of social media on the mental health of minors. There is mounting evidence about how excessive use of social media can lead to depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts among young people. State Attorney General Rob Bonta and Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan of Orinda announced a bill today that would mandate warning labels that pop up when you sign on or log in. Among the groups advocating for and lobbying for this measure is Common Sense Media, a 20-year-old nonprofit organization that helps parents and schools navigate the often treacherous world of media and entertainment. For more, KCBS Radio's Doug Sovern spoke with Jim Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media.

Send us a Text Message.Pretty and popular 15-year-old Kirsten Costas had it all. She was the teenage dream at Miramonte High School in Orinda, California in the 1980's. Jealousy and rage from a member of her peer group would cause a horrific crime to take place on the night of June 23, 1984. A community would never be the same. The 1994 TV movie, Death of a Cheerleader, starring Tori Spelling and Kellie Martin would be based on this case. The highest ranking movie of 1994 would spark a debate about whether or not the murder of Kirsten Costas was planned. Or was it a jealousy fueled impulsive rage? Independent journalism outlets continue to disappear, with more and more layoffs, and consolidation in the media industry. And it's not just a print problem…major news websites are going under too, and radio and TV audiences and ad revenue have shrunk dramatically. Studies suggest the disappearance of so many media outlets is contributing to political polarization in the country, and to the rise of corruption in government. For more, KCBS Political reporter Doug Sovern, along with Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart, spoke with State Senator Steve Glazer of Orinda, who represents much of Contra Costa County.

As you probably know, Bay Area transit systems, especially BART, are hemorrhaging money, and now State Senator Scott Wiener of San Francisco has introduced a bill that would raise Bay Area bridge tolls for the next 5 years, to 9 dollars and 50 cents up from 8 dollars now This will bring in almost a billion dollars to help rescue rapid transit. But the local delegation is split on whether this is a smart idea, and the bill's passage is anything but assured. For more on this, KCBS Political Reporter Doug Sovern spoke with State Senator Steve Glazer, Democrat from Orinda, one of the lawmakers who is opposed to this legislation.

The 1984 Murder of Miramonte High School Student 15 year old Kirsten Costas Perpetrated By Classmate Bernadette ProttiKirsten Costas was on top of the world going into summer vacation 1984. She would be joining the cheerleading team in the upcoming fall, she was on the varsity swim team, and she had just been recruited to join the school's elite social club for girls - The Bob-O-Links, or Bobbie's for short. Her life would be tragically cut short on a Saturday night out to what Kirsten thought was an initiation dinner for the Bobbie's, and the identity of the killer would remain elusive for months. When investigators finally arrested a suspect, the entire community of Ornida, California was stunned to find out who was behind the brutal killing. When you're on a standard path to money and “success,” it's not easy to honor what is true and right for you. Parental and societal expectations will override even the strongest wills. And most people continue down the standard path, even if they have to sacrifice their happiness. But the brave will do something different. Lyssa Jaye went down the expected path that she thought would make everyone proud. But when the company she worked for became all about the $$$, she knew something would have to change. Join us for a conversation on Lyssa's path of growth, surprising pivots, and how she gets to create ripples in the world. She is passionate about social justice, equity in health care and is a strong advocate for making functional healthcare accessible to all. This sounds great! I would be honored to be considered. I went down the expected path, had a 6 year career that I thought would make everyone proud, making $ and on the 'way up' and once my company went public and was all about making profits for shareholders and ethics went out the window, I knew I needed to get out. I traveled alone in Asia x 1.5 years working and volunteering and came home to completely change my life. In the last year, I made a similarly huge transition in response to Covid and an inflexible employer and started my own practice. Let me know if this fits the bill of what you are looking for. The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is here -Thor: Love and Thunder - and your Planet 8 crew has a lot to say about it. And it ain't necessarily good. Much like the previous Thor film, this newest look at the God of Thunder takes a decidedly goofy slant. It's a little too goofy for our taste.Beware -there are spoilers ahead! Not to say there aren't some interesting or exciting things in the film. There are. But the whole film feels so unbalanced that it's hard to appreciate Christian Bale's performance as Gorr the God-Butcher, or Natalie Portman's appearance as Jane Foster, aka the Mighty Thor. Both of these characters have serious stories behind them; Gorr is a deeply grieving man, Jane is battling cancer. But they are undercut by the absurd situations and performances that surround them. We're not against humor. The Marvel films have always had humor in them. But typically it's been relegated to wise-cracking, not slapstick and utterly ridiculous situations. While some complain that Marvel films are too formulaic and there's no directorial freedom, in this case, it seems like Taika Waititi was given absolute free reign. Surely there's a happy medium, a balance between the serious and the absurd, formula and artistic license. We move on from Thor to discuss Marvel Phase 4 and where it's going. What's the overarching plan? In Phase 3 we had Thanos and the Infinity Stones, what's the threat now? The multiverses colliding? It's also difficult to get excited when so many of our favorite characters are gone now. The conversation takes us to the Disney Plus Marvel shows, and even some of the DC films. You just never know where it's gonna go with us!For our Sensor Sweep, all you fans of both tiki and kaiju will want to know about the King Ghidorah tiki mug from Mondo ! This is a mug nearly as big as the three-headed monster himself. It stands a whopping 8 3/4" high and holds 26 ounces! The Planet 8 crew will be at Creatures-Con August 7th, and Bob will be selling passes for Godzillafest for $10 off at our table. One of the most anticipated TV series in years has just concluded its first season, and there's been a lot of talk about it, especially between the members of Planet 8. We're talking, of course, about Obi-Wan Kenobi, the latest Star Wars show on Disney Plus.Picking up threads from the prequel trilogy and the Clone Wars series, the show follows up on a downtrodden Obi-Wan Kenobi, years after the devastation of the Jedi Order and the fall of the Republic. Obi-Wan lives an unremarkable life on Tatooine, making a living harvesting meat from gigantic desert beasts, and living in a cave not far from the Lars homestead, where he can watch over the young Luke Skywalker. However, through a turn of events, Obi-Wan is called back into service, and must ultimately confront his former friend and now greatest foe, Darth Vader. One of the problems of doing a story like this, where you're dealing with events that take place in a character's past, is you know they can't be killed off or face serious physical jeopardy, so the focus is much more on their development and growth. The show managed to believably take us from a defeated, self-doubting Obi-Wan to one who has rediscovered his self-worth. It's rewarding to watch, mainly due to the wonderful acting skills of Ewan McGregor. He fully embodies the former Jedi knight and makes him relatable and sympathetic.A true delight was the unexpected appearance of ten-year-old Princess Leia as portrayed by the marvelous Vivien Lyra Blair. She perfectly captured the spirit of Carrie Fisher's performance. The introduction of the inquisitor Reva, played by newcomer Moses Ingram, brings to mind questions regarding how the Jedi council functioned -or didn't - and the idea of redemption and how that works in Star Wars. It seems like a person can be truly reprehensible but repent and then be completely redeemed. Does that make sense? This series, along with Rogue One, helps establish Darth Vader as a true villain again. He and Obi-Wan have several encounters, with Ben getting the upper hand only at the end. The last battle also sets up their encounter in the original film, and explains Kenobi's somewhat cryptic remarks to Luke regarding his father. It's a bit of backwards dancing but it's done well. All in all, we enjoyed the series. It provides some insight into established characters without breaking canon and gives us some new characters and developments that might allow for a season two. Our Sensor Sweep carries on the Star Wars theme, as Karen presents a fabulous book, Secrets of the Force: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Wars by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross. This hefty tome moves chronologically through the history of the Star Wars films, animated series, and The Mandalorian via interviews with the people who made them. It's a treasure trove of great stories and information for any Star Wars fan.Big News: Your Planet 8 crew will be appearing live at Creatures Con! Held in Orinda, California on August 7, all three of us -Larry, Bob, and Karen - will be hanging out at a table at the convention! The show is going to be a blast. This year author and film commentator David J. Skal will be a special guest, along with Sara Karloff, daughter of Boris Karloff, and many others. The show is hosted by our good friend, Lord Blood-Rah, and Tom Wyrsch, also friend of Planet 8. It's going to be a fantastic show, so please check it out. You can find all the info at http://www.creaturescon.com/. All right kids, that's it for this time. Please be good to each other and be safe!Let us know what you think of Obi-Wan:Twitter: https://twitter.com/Planet8CastFacebook: www.Facebook.com/Planet8PodcastYouTube: https://youtube.com/Planet8podcastUtinni!!
