Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of January 23, 2026. The big movie of the week shifts from tense thriller to just a standard action film. Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson star in the new crime movie "Mercy" with no jury, no lawyers, and just an AI judge.  For a family friendly pick, Angel Studio’s "Standout: The Ben Kjar Story" is an incredible, inspirational true story with Utah roots. It tells you about the three-time Utah high school state champion, UVU's first-ever all-American, and eventual world champion wrestler who did it all with Crouzon Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. And Andy says it's absolutely worth your time! Also  Streaming on Netflix and also featuring Utah roots, the new documentary "Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart" actually does manage to shed some new light on a story that you might think you've already heard everything about.  The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful Beehive State, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and Deseret News / KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of January 16, 2026. The big movie of the week is the latest in a franchise, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," is a zombie horror film with weird charm and a lot of violence that's not made for some movie-goers. Streaming on Netflix a tense new Ben Affleck/Matt Damon action flick called "The Rip" has plenty of action and intrigue, but plenty of adult language too. Also on Netflix, the e-episode mystery series “Agatha Christie's Seven Dials” is an enjoyable watch for those who like Britain and murder mysteries and shows set in the past.  The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of January 9, 2026. Our Big Movie this week is Gerard Butler & Morena Baccarin returning in the disaster-movie sequel "Greenland 2: Migration", a decent-but-not-great follow up to 2020's "Greenland".  An excellent option in theaters is "Is This Thing On?," where Will Arnett copes with his marital estrangement by...doing stand-up comedy. But there's more to it than just that and Laura Dern is also excellent. The best option is (According to Andy) is Angel Studios’ "I Was A Stranger." It tells a powerful story of  Syrian refugees that brought him to tears in one of those tough-to-watch-but-worth-it of films. For streaming fodder, Netflix has an adaptation of the romance novel "People We Meet on Vacation" that, while I have a few minor quibbles, was still relatively entertaining. In the first new release of the year, Daisy Ridley stars in "We Bury The Dead," a zombie/survival thriller that isn't your typical zombie movie.  For streaming, Netflix has a new documentary movie, "Evil Influencer: The Jodi Hildebrandt Story," that looks deeper into how a person who at one time was a licensed therapist could eventually be arrested for horrific child abuse. Peacock has a new intriguing spy thriller series streaming, "The Copenhagen Test" that stars Simu Liu & Melissa Barrera. There are elements of traditional spy genre movies and shows, as well as a fascinating "Truman Show"-esque angle that is intriguing and has audiences hooked! Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the long Thanksgiving weekend 2025. The plentiful offerings during the long Thanksgiving box-office weekend offer many options for your viewing pleasure. Starting with the highly enjoyable  "Zootopia 2," which brings the animal (and reptile) gang back to the big screen for the first time in 9 years. The whole family will enjoy this one! The grown-ups will have a bit more fun with "Eternity", where Elizabeth Olsen has to choose how to spend eternity and which husband she'll spend it with. It's a tough choice, but someone's gotta do it! On streaming, Mark Wahlberg's family action comedy from a couple of years ago gets a sequel called "The Family Plan 2".  If you liked the first one, the second one is more of the same bloodless action with some dad jokes thrown in there for good measure. Also available on streaming is the first four episodes of the final season of the Netflix megahit "Stranger Things.” But you will have to wait until New Year's Eve for the final final episode and the close of the saga. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.  Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow. The wait is over for "Wicked" fans as "Wicked: For Good" finally comes to theaters with a pretty good second act, though it doesn't quite hit the high notes of Part One. The musical sequel is worth watching for the sets, costumes, and Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo's chemistry, but it is missing really connective songs other than "For Good.” Also in theaters is “Rental Family”  with Brendan Fraser, a great-looking, deep-question-asking film about connection that gives a wonderful taste of Japan and its culture.  Finally, the ‘good movie’ train rolls on with the Netflix drama, “Train Dreams.” Starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, it takes you back and immerses you in a different time when life moved at a much different pace, and life shaped you in a much different way.  Movies were so good this week, producer KellieAnn even gives her mini-review of “Wicked: For Good” and “Rental Family” after Andy’s segment. November’s Box Office is launched with an excellent film, “Nuremberg, ”a powerful retelling of the post-WWII trial of what remained of Nazi leadership. Also wildly entertaining is “Predator: Badlands,” which crosses over with the Alien franchise in an intriguing way.  For streaming, Andy Highly recommends “Death By Lightning” on Netflix, which tells the little-known story of President James Garfield and his remarkable and unexpected candidacy for the presidency, and assassination. On Peacock, “All Her Fault” will snag you in the first scene, about a mother whose son disappears, and then bring you along as the story slowly releases new details over eight episodes. And for a family feature, Netflix has "Dr. Seuss' The Sneetches," an animated musical adaptation of the beloved children’s book featuring a tale of the two Sneetch tribes who hate each other only because the other has a different mark on their bellies. A cute new movie worth adding to the annual family Halloween rotation is "Stitch Head," which is kind of a mix of "Monsters Inc" & "Frankenweenie.” But the new torture film, “Bugonia" is a big fat F- from Andy, for pretentiousness, violence, and being a total waste of time. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of October 25, 2025. This is a week of contrasts with one of the worst movies Andy’s seen this year, and one of the best.  Also, there’s a kids' show on Disney+ for “Frozen “and LEGO fans.  "Regretting You" wastes talented up-and-comer McKenna Grace in an overly melodramatic adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel.  Andy said the obvious pun is, "The only thing I REGRET, is seeing this!" But he also admits it could be a teen girl's favorite movie.  On the other hand, Andy thought Ethan Hawke was excellent in "Blue Moon"; the story was interesting, as was the subject matter, setting, and pretty much everything. The biopic tells about the partnership between Broadway's Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, as Hart tries to save face during the opening of the now iconic musical, “Oklahoma!”  Finally, the family-friendly pick of the week: "LEGO Disney Frozen: Operation Puffins" wich combines the magic of “Frozen” and LEGO. The new movie featuring Keanu Reeves, Aziz Ansari & Seth Rogen is a slow-burning comedy that gets even better once you think about it. Also in theaters, the historical thriller, and faith-fueled, story of "Truth & Treason” is the true story of a teenager who paid the ultimate price to stand up for his conscience in WWII-era Nazi Germany. Andy even sat down with the film’s writer and director, Matt Whitaker, to discuss the new film in this ‘Movie Show Digital Extra.’ Finally, Roald Dahl's "The Twits" gets an animated Netflix feature, including lots of departures from the book's story, but it's still kind of a weird mix of fun (and plenty of bodily function jokes). Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of September 2, 2025. Two films are hitting the big screen with very different feels. A funny yet adult comedy, "Splitsville," starring Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona, who have different ideas on how to handle their marriages, with occasionally laugh-out-loud results. And for those looking for a faith-based option this week, "Light of the World" is a beautifully animated film that explores the life of Jesus from the perspective of his young disciple, John. And the real big deal is on streaming, fans of "The Office" can now check out the sequel series "The Paper".  It took a couple of episodes for Andy to get the hang of it, but he liked the characters and became invested really quickly. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 29, 2025. Labor Day weekend brings Austin Butler getting brutalized in "Caught Stealing," a violent action comedy that will make you question how much punishment one person can take. Also in theaters, Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman try to convince us that they love each other and then hate each other in "The Roses". And "Sharing Aloha" takes you behind the scenes at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii, letting you hear the amazing stories of those who appear in the famous show. And for streaming fans, "The Thursday Murder Club" on Netflix is a fun little murder mystery featuring Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 22, 2025. The highest-grossing animated film of all time, "Ne Zha II," comes to local theaters from China and is dubbed into English for the first time.  It's epic and looks great, but patience is required. If you want to see beautiful people roughing it, "Eden" from director Ron Howard may be more your thing. Of local interest, "The Streak" is a must-watch for sports fans as this new documentary in theaters explores the 1987 Salt Lake Trappers and their historic 29-game winning streak 38 years ago.  And finally, a young adult romance movie on streaming for Gen Z called "The Map That Leads To You" is a gorgeously shot movie about star-crossed lovers on Amazon Prime Video. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 15, 2025. Today’s episode is brought to you by the number 2! Starting with the movie hitting theaters, "Nobody 2” brings Bob Odenkirk's assassin and his family to the vacation spot he went to as a kid, and comedic (but savage) violence ensues. Next, "Highest 2 Lowest" teams up Spike Lee and Denzel Washington in an action drama that has a music mogul dealing with a ransom request. Netflix’s "Night Always Comes" makes you glad you're not having the same kind of night that Vanessa Kirby is. For parents of younger viewers and those looking to relive some nostalgia, "Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical" is a must-watch. It follows Charlie Brown and company as they try to save their summer camp from closing down, now available on AppleTV+. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 8, 2025.  The sequel "Freakier Friday" takes a lot from the 2003 "Freaky Friday" movie, but it's still fun to see Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis trading bodies with a couple of teenagers.  It's also got a good message about seeing things from others' perspectives. Other options include a couple of scary movies... one that could be a good test to see if your kids can *handle* scary movies called "Sketch" from Angel Studios. And NOT for kids, a film called "Weapons"... it's still a freak-you-out and make you nervous and uncomfortable for two hours kind of scary movie.  Finally, on streaming on Amazon Prime Video, you could check out Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, and Eva Longoria in "The Pickup".  You gotta like Pete Davidson, though, to enjoy this at all...and that may be too much to ask for some. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of August 1, 2025. The big movie this week is a reboot/sequel titled "The Naked Gun," starring Liam Neeson in the slapstick farce about a group of hilarious idiots called Police Squad. Andy hasn’t laughed this hard in a movie for a long time, even if it did get a little vulgar at times. Another funny sequel is "The Bad Guys 2," an animated family movie about a group of anthropomorphic animal former bad guys who are getting framed for crimes they're not committing by a group of bad gals. Andy highly recommends Netflix’s new documentary, "WWE: Unreal," a must-watch for pro-wrestling fans. And after a bit of a delay, Netflix also has a mostly satisfying sequel with “Happy Gilmore 2.”  The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy, with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 25, 2025.  Andy had high hopes for Marvel's latest superhero movie, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," and was mostly pleased with the result. Director Matt Shakman got the family dynamic right and didn't over-rely on action, plus had a (dare we say?) fantastic retro-futuristic design. In the second segment of our episode, we even have our good friend Natalie Mollinet of Nat’s Nerd Knowledge giving her quick review, as producer KellieAnn is on vacation.  Also out this weekend are a couple of indie movies that were very compelling, including "Sorry, Baby," a Sundance 2025 award-winner about a college professor coping and trying to move on after being assaulted by her own professor years before. "Shosana" gives us a look at the conflict between Zionists and the British rulers in the 1930s and 40's in Tel Aviv through the eyes of a Jewish reporter and her fiancé, a British policeman assigned there. Sadly, not featured on this review rundown, but not available on Netflix, "Happy Gilmore 2" is a sequel that Adam Sandler fans, like Andy, can’t wait to watch. Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 18, 2025. A reboot of a Saturday morning cartoon from the 1980s, "Smurfs," has a handful of funny moments and some decent animation, but otherwise is just for the little ones. “Eddington” might give you PTSD flashbacks to the early days of the COVID pandemic of 2020 as Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal battle it out for mayor of a fictional New Mexico town. On streaming, a really solid series called "Untamed" on Netflix has Eric Bana trying to solve a young adult's mysterious death in Yosemite National Park. And for you Trekies out there, a new season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" on Paramount+ brings back the entertaining adventures of the crew of the USS Enterprise back before the days of Captain Kirk. (According to producer KellieAnn, it’s a “must-watch” for sci-fi fans.) Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of July 11, 2025. The big question of the weekend is whether James Gunn can pull off a film about one of the most famous superheroes of all time. Thankfully, according to both Andy and producer KellieAnn’s opinions, he nailed it! “Superman” is fun, vibrant, and enjoyable! Producer KellieAnn even joined our friends at the Hallmarkies podcast to talk about the film and the iconic romance of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.  For streaming options, "Brick" on Netflix is an intriguing premise but not a great follow-through. It is hampered by some dubbing issues (it's originally in German), and some over-the-top violent moments mean it is not for all audiences. Andy did like Maggie Q's new streaming series "Ballard" on Prime Video, a spinoff of "Bosch" that is a fairly standard police mystery procedural and is an enjoyable watch.
