In working as a CPA and starting several small businesses, Levi Morehouse realized that the back-office is a distraction to most entrepreneurs and that they need done-for-you, cloud-based, accounting and reporting and he founded Ceterus in 2008. In the years since, Ceterus has grown quickly, raised millions in venture capital, built an automated accounting platform, and most importantly empowered thousands of entrepreneurs with accounting, reporting, and consulting solutions. More recently Ceterus has begun to provide their accounting platform to CPAs and Accountants who serve as trusted advisors to small business entrepreneurs themselves. He lives in Charleston, South Carolina with his lovely wife, five boys, and a baby daughter. Jonathan has been with Ceterus for nearly a decade, growing sales and developing new revenue streams in a rapidly changing accounting environment. Jonathan's focus is to empower dental-focused CPA firms to improve their Client Accounting Services business with greater automation, accuracy, and a white-labelled client reporting portal which includes real-time dental P&L benchmarks and industry insights.

Levi Morehouse is not a yoga teacher, a yoga studio owner, or a yoga entrepreneur. He is a small business owner though, and his small business is an accounting + book keeping company called Ceterus. Ceterus' slogan is "let us do the rest" + they provide services for small business owners doing their accounting or book keeping. You may be curious why I wanted to talk to Levi. The reason is that I think that book keeping + accounting is something that many people in the yoga industry lack, and that's fair enough. We, as yoga teachers, are great at educating and sharing our knowledge of yoga. We are not accountants, we are not book keepers, and we are not (usually) super knowledgeable in the area of accounting + book keeping. And we shouldn't be. We should be focusing on the things that we are great at, and let someone else do the things that we aren't. This is exactly what Levi and I chat about on this episode of the podcast. Levi shares his passion for accounting + book keeping, his recommendations for yoga studio owners, and the services that Ceterus provides, as well as industry tips + tricks. Do you need help with your book keeping + accounting? Ceterus has offered a super awesome deal for listeners of the show! If you sign up here, you can get your first 3 months working with Ceterus for FREE. This is an awesome deal, so don't miss out! Join the community on Facebook, Instagram + sign up for the newsletter!
Derek Carter was racing along the path to partnership at a large accounting firm. He had graduated college with an accounting degree and spent years busting his ass, taking on more responsibility and leading at a large regional firm. He was managing people and working with autonomy in a large organization. But his former colleague Levi Morehouse kept trying to sell him on leaving. They had worked together before Levi left to start Ceterus and had been pushing for Derek to join ever since. Eventually, Derek decided to make the leap into the startup world. He's now the COO of Ceterus, one of the most innovative and fastest growing accounting startups in the country. Derek shares his backstory, from how he chose to pursue accounting, to deciding to leave his good job at a big firm to join a startup. Derek is an outstanding example of an implementer joining with a visionary to make big things happen. If you're working in a traditional role and excited by the possibility of working with a startup, there's a ton of wisdom for you in this episode. Covered in this episode: - Leaning competitiveness from baseball - Deciding to pursue an accounting degree - What made Northwood University great - What are the common characteristics of accountants - Why public accountants need to learn how to sell to continuing progressing in their careers - Derek's experience starting at a large public accounting firm - The disconnect between auditing classes in college and auditing reality - How did Derek decide to join Ceterus - Making the switch from a large established company to a startup - What does Derek look for when hiring for Ceterus - Making the decision to seek and eventually take on outside investment - Advice for implementors who want to work in cool fields, but don't want to be visionaries - Opportunities at Ceterus Show notes and links to all books, articles, and resources mentioned are available at isaacmorehouse.com If you are a fan of the show, make sure to leave a review on iTunes. Pulled a fast one on you today! TK is occupied in Chicago at a family wedding and told me the house he's staying in is way too loud and full of nieces and nephews to record today. I called him a wimp. He laughed. Keeping with the family theme, today my brother Levi Morehouse steps in as TK's replacement. He's the Founder & CEO of Ceterus (ceterus.com), which provides cloud-based accounting and bookkeeping for franchise owners. Levi is a ridiculously successful entrepreneur, father, and offensive fouler on the basketball court. It was just like growing up. I did most of the talking, he made most of the sense. Some of the things we discuss: -If you lived to 150, how would that change your lifestyle today? -Could you learn more as an Uber driver than a student? -Philosophers vs. Tony Robbins -Choosing what to do based on what it does to you, instead of what it does for the world -Unsung entrepreneurs (and how Levi's company helps them!) -Smart drugs Recommendations: BOLD by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler, Zero to One by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters. This and all episodes are available on SoundCloud, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, and Stitcher.

Yes, Levi is my brother. But this isn't nepotism. He's a highly successful entrepreneur. His company Ceterus is growing and revolutionizing small business accounting. He joins me to talk about why it took him so long to dream big, what greatness means, whether it's for everyone, and how to balance being an entrepreneur with raising five boys. (We had some issues with the levels on this episode, so I apologize for any drops or spikes in volume.)
