October is in full swing and we've got all the feels over here on the pod. We reflect on our trip to Lewiston-Auburn earlier this month, including the driving tour of Dave's old stomping grounds, the condo-ficaton of Dave's old synagogue, and the beautiful European cathedral in the middle of Lewiston. More importantly, we discuss the retrieval of a dormant Torah from storage, the discovery of a gorgeous, un-voweled Hafatarah scroll, and how the trip back in time affected us both. On a lighter note, we prepare to go to Fenway for the ALCS, Dave talks about the Fryeburg Fair, and Dan reviews family weekend at Brandeis. Enjoy!
E62: The Halftime Show 10.3.21 Dan and Dave squeeze in a pod during the Patriots game on location in Poland, Maine. We address important issues surrounding waterfalls (big and small), hiking the Grand Canyon, Dave's deck demolition, and prepare for a long-awaited heritage tour of Lewiston-Auburn. Also: Dave is seeing a lot of patients, Dan has no need for longer meetings, Sox/Yanks in the playoffs, Torah retrieval, and the difference between discipline and willpower.
Welcome to this month's episode of Franco-American Pathways, the second in our Mapping Franco Lewiston series. If you haven't heard part one, we suggest going back and giving it a listen. It'll give you some context for this month's conversations. In part one, we focused on connecting the physical and cultural topographies of Lewiston in order to better understand its history; we visited Libby Bischof at the Osher Map Library to look at several different renderings of Lewiston-Auburn throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and then spent a day on foot together in Lewiston to deepen our understanding of the Franco presence there. For this second part, we rounded out our exploration of Franco Lewiston talking with James Myall, co-author of The Franco-Americans of Lewiston-Auburn, historian, and policy analyst for the Maine Center for Economic Policy. Be sure to check out our blog to take a look at the resources mentioned and stay up to date on all our news. Introducing Franco-American Pathways (Chemins Franco-Américains), a podcast that uses resources available at the University of Southern Maine's Franco-American Collection to celebrate Franco history, culture, and stories. In this pilot episode, we talk about the work being done at collections like ours to preserve and protect oral histories and artifacts that document the Franco experience. We talk a bit about the history of the Francos in Maine and New England, interview members of the Franco community, and give you a sample of one of our many oral histories. We hope that our collection will not only be a resource for the academic community, but also a means for Maine's Franco-Americans to connect with their heritage, and with each other. Please reach out via our website to see photos of the materials discussed in today's episode, connect about visiting the collection, or just to say “hi” and share your thoughts. While Maine has maintained one of the lowest rates of COVID-19 in the country, it made national headlines earlier this year for having one of the highest positivity rates for Black and African American people .
In this bonus episode, Drewby and Yergy review the happenings about our local area now that the Wuhan Coronavirus (now known as COVID-19,) has not only hit the USA, but has hit the twin cities of Lewiston/Auburn here in Maine. We cover some of the latest national news updates on the pandemic, discuss our own preparations for an eventual lockdown, and our journey into Hannaford in masks - as well as the lack of food and paper goods in supermarkets. Joshua Shea hails from Lewiston Auburn, Maine where he sat on the City Council and where his entrepreneurial spirit gave birth to the Lewiston Auburn Film Festival and Lewiston Auburn Magazine before his meteoric rise was undone by alcoholism and porn addiction. He is the author of the memoir "The Addiction Nobody Talks About" and the upcoming book, “He's a porn addict. Now what?” He reached out to me thru the podcast and phoned in from Maine and shares here a pretty inspiring story of incomprehensible demoralization and recovery.

I had so much fun interviewing him that I decided to feature him in the first episode of this new podcast. We talk about Lewiston/Auburn, his music, and his story. Welcome to Tatter.
