On July 19th, farmworkers and their allies, organized by Migrant Justice, picketed the Hannaford supermarket in Glens Falls, New York. The demonstration called on the company to join the Milk With Dignity program, which asks the chain to only stock dairy in their stores from farms where workers are treated well and their rights are not infringed on. Benno Greene went to this demonstration and talked with two dairy farm workers, Yovani and Enrique, about the difficulties and injustices they face at work, why the Milk With Dignity program is important, and how national politics is affecting their workplaces and activism. Since Yovani and Enrique primarily speak Spanish, the interview was conducted with Rachel Elliot of Migrant Justice translating.
It's not unheard of for banks to fire clients. However, when somebody like high-profile lawyer Eva Chipiuk gets unbanked, it should catch your attention. The details are somewhat opaque and protected by client confidentiality. According to the correspondence from the Royal Bank of Canada that Ms. Chipiuk released, the situation was triggered by a Bitcoin transaction. And if transactions appear suspicious, banks are actually required by law to take action. On the other hand, lots of people buy and sell Bitcoin. So, that was all it was? And it was nothing to do with Ms. Chipiuk's public support for the Freedom Convoy, and her counter-establishment political views? Well, nobody's saying that. So, perhaps we shouldn't say it, either.
We at Urbanist Media (and the Urban Roots podcast) are excited to have, yet again, celebrated Juneteenth with Cincinnati Public Radio. This year, we produced brand new Juneteenth Cincinnati Shorts: weekly, 90-second tributes to people and places important to Cincinnati Black history and African American history. This one is all about the Federation of Colored Women's Clubs…—Tucked away on Chapel Street in Walnut Hills, this short takes you to the Cincinnati Federation of Colored Women's Clubs, which, for over a century, has continued to serve as a hub for Black women's activism. Founded in 1904 by Mary Fletcher Ross, the Federation united local clubs to provide education and social services that, at the time, weren't available to the Black community. In 1925, members purchased the Hannaford-designed mansion on Chapel Street that still stands today, transforming it into a lasting symbol of resilience, sisterhood, and civic leadership.Listen to the entire archive (2023-2025) on Cincinnati Public Radio's website: https://cinradio.org/juneteenth-special-programming-from-urbanist-media/—Juneteenth Cincinnati Shorts is brought to you by Urbanist Media's Urban Roots podcast team: Deqah Hussein-Wetzel (Executive Producer / Host & Narrator), Tania Mohammad (Producer / Story Editor), Vanessa Maria Quirk (Story Editor), and Connor Lynch (Audio Editor / Mixer).
With today's $2.8 billion contribution announced earlier today by a clearly elated Premier Danielle Smith, Alberta's Heritage Fund reached $30 billion — almost double what it was five years ago. For the premier, this is an old goal — she was writing 25 years ago that instead of spending resource revenues as they are received, Alberta should build up a fund to make up for when those resources, and the funds they generate, are exhausted.
“Be careful what you wish for.” If you are one of those Albertans who say, “Let's vote for independence and then see what sort of a better deal we can get out of Ottawa,” you're playing a dangerous game, says Erika Barootes, tonight's guest on Hannaford.
Political analyst Dr. Frances Widdowson, who was terminated from her tenured role at Mount Royal University for questioning baseless claims bodies of 215 indigenous children were found on the grounds of a residential school in Kamloops, BC, joins Hannaford this week to discuss her investigation into the matter.
This week's episode of Hannaford guest hosted by Jen Hodgson, features Michael Clark, executive director of the Christian Impact Network. Clark and other political leaders are organizing a multi-city tour across Alberta designed to equip and encourage aspiring and current political leaders.

In tonight's special edition of Hannaford, he talks in depth about the intellectual malaise that has turned Canada into a 'woke' shadow of its formerly robust character — and the depressing consequences of the failure of Canadian conservatives to address it.

If you think food prices are rising more quickly than inflation generally, they are. And thanks to tariffs, counter tariffs and federal policies like carbon tax, it's not going get better any time soon. That's the discouraging news from ‘The Food Professor,' Dalhousie University's Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, tonight's guest on Hannaford.

In today's episode, Bob'nJoyce discuss the impact OD/HR practitioners have shaping culture and transforming organizations. The spotlight, much to her chagrin, is on Joyce and her impact first at Central Maine Power, and later at Hannaford and Delhaize. It underscores the importance of what great leaders do – drive positive change while focusing on the business and its people, and not on themselves. We are ending 2024 with episodes that inspire thought and positivity. Last week it was about the power of connection and community. This week it is about the work that makes it so. Kudos to my co-host and friend, Joyce Wilson-Sanford – who was and still is a force to be reckoned with. Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome.

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants and J.D. Davis' agent, Matt Hannaford, are engaged in a war of words after Davis was released by the Giants on Monday, leaving Davis with just a fraction of his non-guaranteed $6.9 million salary. Did the Giants do something wrong, or did Davis' agent overplay his hand? All of the details and public comments are discussed and analyzed. In essence, both parties claim that the SF Giants came in with an offer that was, according to Hannaford, "several hundred thousand" below the SF Giants' $6.55M filing number within an hour of the deadline to exchange figures. Giants president of baseball operations responded very specifically, saying that the Giants' offer was for just under $6.4M. Regardless, the key point is that had Davis' representation accepted the Giants' offer, that money would be guaranteed. If they passed on the offer and the deadline to exchange figures arrived, which it ultimately did, then Davis would go to an arbitration hearing fighting for non-guaranteed money.Any way you look at this, it seems like Davis' agent did a poor job helping his client. The SF Giants were linked to Matt Chapman all offseason. Davis himself commented publicly on the possibility of the Giants signing Chapman before it happened. So there's absolutely no reason Davis should've let this go to an arbitration hearing, knowing that the money would not be guaranteed if it did—whether they won or lost the hearing. What ended up transpiring was that the Giants did indeed sign Chapman, clearly making Davis the odd man out. Davis' agent should've known that would be the case—it was immediately discussed on Locked On Giants once the Chapman deal was reported. The SF Giants looked for a trade partner for Davis, were unable to find one, and put him on outright waivers. Any team could've claimed Davis and his $6.9M (non-guaranteed through Opening Day) salary, and every team passed. At that point, the Giants were left with no choice but to release Davis, leaving him with just 30 days pay, or just over $1.1M. All in all, this looks like a major blunder by Davis' representation and not really something that the Giants did wrong. It stinks for J.D. Davis nonetheless and hopefully he lands on his feet. Davis ultimately made north of $6M in his 1 1/3 seasons with the Giants.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
