From the “Vertical Gas Corridor” to projects in the Eastern Mediterranean, Greece is stepping up its efforts on the energy front. This is placing it at the heart of exciting new developments that will link the East Med with Central Europe and even Ukraine, while drawing the attention of US energy giants like Exxon Mobil and Chevron. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos Davelis as we break down some of the latest developments on the energy front, and look at what they mean for Greece and its partners in the region. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Greece on the regional energy mapGreece an ‘ideal connector' in the IMEC corridorGas to flow from Greece to Slovakia, UkraineGreek delegation heads to Egypt amid controversy Ankara eyeing Aegean in new exercise
A decision earlier this year by authorities in the occupied northern part of Cyprus to allow headscarves in schools has led to mass protests against what many see as President Erdogan's increasing authoritarianism and a creeping Islamification from Ankara. The protests also touch on broader issues, with Turkish Cypriots expressing concerns about money laundering, crime, and a wider Russian and Iranian presence. Nektaria Stamouli, the deputy editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition and Politico's Eastern Mediterranean correspondent, joins Thanos Davelis to break down this protest movement and look at what it says about where Turkish Cypriots stand vis-a-vis Erdogan. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Turkish Cypriots resist creeping IslamificationErdogan says US CAATSA sanctions on Turkey defense sector easing under TrumpGreece takes legal action over drone show advertising Adidas near AcropolisOutrage in Greece after Adidas advert shows drone shoe ‘kicking' Acropolis
In January of 1996 Greece and Turkey came close to conflict when the Imia crisis erupted. The US played a critical role in preventing a military escalation through Assistant Secretary of State Richard Holbrooke, and the US ambassadors in Athens and Ankara. Thomas Niles, the US ambassador in Athens at the time who passed away this week, spoke openly about the crisis in the years that followed, noting that the US had made a “big mistake” in not taking a position on Greek sovereignty in the Aegean. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos Davelis as we look back at the Imia crisis of 1996, the US role in preventing a military confrontation, and its lasting legacy today. You can read the articles we discuss on our podcast here:Thomas Niles, US envoy during Imia crisis, dies at 85Stournaras: Crisis may be Europe's chanceU.S. Announces Deal to Share Ukraine's Mineral WealthUS and Ukraine sign agreement creating investment fund after months of negotiations

All eyes are on Prime Minister Mitsotakis as Greeks wait to hear who he plans to nominate as Greece's next president. While the position is a largely ceremonial one, who is selected will send a message across the political spectrum, and will likely set the tone for the remainder of Mitsotakis' term as he will have to decide whether to appease his party's base or pick a candidate with a broader appeal. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos Davelis to look into this story, breaking down the dilemma facing Mitsotakis and the message it sends about Greek politics. Athens will take center stage on Thursday as Turkey's President Erdogan visits Greece's capital to meet with Prime Minister Mitsotakis amid a sense of reserved optimism. In conversation with Professor Hicham Safieddine, we get to grips with Lebanon's banking system. He walks us through the history of central banks, who Lebanon's Barons of Banking were, and how Lebanon's banking sector got to where it is today. We reflect on Beirut's economy and banking system from the 1800s to the present day, taking into account the Ottoman Imperial Bank, Banque de Syrie et du Liban, Banque du Liban and the Intra-affair. Finally, we discuss the current state of affairs and if change is on the horizon. Hicham Safieddine is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in the History of the Modern Middle East at the University of British Columbia. His research mostly focuses on the 19th and 20th century financial, economic and intellectual history of the MENA region. Safieddine is currently examining the emergence and transformation of global and national monetary regimes and financial systems under capitalist expansion, debt, war, colonial conquest, national liberation and revolution. Outside of his academic work, Hicham is the co-founder of e-zines Al-Akhbar English and The Legal Agenda's English Edition. About “Banking on the State: The Financial Foundations of Lebanon”: Banking on the State reveals how the financial foundations of Lebanon were shaped by the history of the standardization of economic practices and financial regimes within the decolonizing world. The system of central banking that emerged was the product of a complex interaction of war, economic policies, international financial regimes, post-colonial state-building, global currents of technocratic knowledge, and private business interests. It served rather than challenged the interests of an oligarchy of local bankers. As Hicham Safieddine shows, the set of arrangements that governed the central bank thus was dictated by dynamics of political power and financial profit more than market forces, national interest or economic sovereignty. ****** ABOUT THE SERIES ****** afikra Conversations is our flagship program featuring long-form interviews with experts from academia, art, and media who are helping document and/or shape the histories and cultures of the Arab world through their work. Based on the results from the May election, New Democracy is once again set to win a comfortable majority later this month - something the latest polls confirm as well. As we approach the June 25th elections, the questions then are whether this will be enough for New Democracy to form a single-party government, and what the opposition will look like as PASOK and SYRIZA battle for dominance of Greece's center left. Tom Ellis, the editor in chief of Kathimerini's English Edition, joins Thanos with the latest analysis from Athens ahead of this second round of elections. This lecture was given on April 5, 2022 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. For more information on upcoming events, please visit our website at www.thomisticinstitute.org. About the speaker: Dr. Chad Pecknold received his PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2005 and since 2008 he has been a Professor of Historical & Systematic Theology in the School of Theology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Pecknold has authored or edited five books, each relating the thought of St. Augustine to modern philosophical and theological reasoning, including, Transforming Postliberal Theology (2005), The Promise of Scriptural Reasoning (2006), Time, Liturgy, and the Politics of Redemption (2008), Christianity and Politics (2010) and the T&T Clark Companion to Augustine and Modern Theology (2014). He teaches in the areas of fundamental theology, Christian anthropology, and political theology. In fundamental theology he brings Augustine's rejection of skepticism and embrace of metaphysical accounts of causality to bear on modern skepticism and metaphysical agnosticism. In Christian anthropology, Pecknold focuses especially on 20th century nature-grace disputes, and the relationship between Augustinian and Thomistic distinctions between natural and supernatural orders. In political theology, Pecknold is principally concerned with close readings of Augustine's masterwork, The City of God, as a fundamental and transcendent vision that inspires, and has the power to critique and correct, the dynamics of Western civilization. Professor Pecknold is also a frequent contributor to debates in the public square. He writes weekly columns as the U.S. Contributing Editor to The Catholic Herald, one of the oldest Catholic magazines in the world, and also writes regularly for other publications, such as First Things, Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, and National Review on a range of timely topics related to the importance and impact of Church teaching on social and political questions. Professor Pecknold is frequently sought after for his opinion on current events, and has been quoted in hundreds of news outlets around the world such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He has appeared as an invited guest on radio and television shows from NPR's “All Things Considered” to EWTN News Nightly offering his clear analysis and expert opinion on the Catholic Church, the papacy, and the relationship between the Church and politics in American culture. Pecknold serves on the Editorial Board of The Catholic University of America Press, and also co-edits with Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., their celebrated Sacra Doctrina series. He serves as an Associate Editor for the English Edition of the international Thomistic journal of theology, Nova et Vetera. He serves as Chairman of the Academy of Catholic Theology, and has the honor of serving as a Fellow of the Institute for Human Ecology at Catholic University. Dr Pecknold is currently writing a book on a Catholic understanding of Augustine's City of God.
