For this Out Takes, we had a stack of reviews to cover some of the films on offer in cinemas and online this February. We started off by saying bon retour to the 37th Alliance Française French Film Festival which kicks off again across Australia from March 3rd. One of the queer highlights in this year’s program is ‘The Little Sister’ which tells the story of Fatima (played by Nadia Melliti), who is the youngest daughter of a Franco-Algerian family living in the suburbs of Paris. Surrounded by her sisters, she grows up in a warm, loving household shaped by strong traditions and Muslim faith. A gifted student, she graduates high school and enrols in a philosophy program in Paris, where she is suddenly exposed to a world far removed from everything she knows. In the capital, new encounters and ideas unsettle her certainties, specifically her exploration of her sexuality and connection with the queer community. This beautiful film was selected for the Official Competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where Nadia Melliti won the Best Actress award and the film received the Queer Palm and is a must-see. We then took a look at ‘Cashing Out’, a new documentary that is streaming now online for free from The New Yorker that tells a little heard story about an insurance scheme that had a huge impact in the early years of the AIDS epidemic in the U.S. ‘Cashing Out’ was shortlisted for this year's Best Documentary Short Film and was executive produced by Matt Bomer and RuPaul's Drag Race alumni Angeria Paris Van Michaels and is another incredible story of the resilience of our community in the face of an epidemic. We then moved on to ‘Wuthering Heights’, the latest film from celebrated writer and director Emerald Fennell who brought together Margot Robbie, Jacob Elordi and a Charli XCX soundtrack for her ‘horny’ interpretation of the classic novel by Emily Bronte. Everyone has a lot to say about this new version, so we jumped on the bandwagon to give you the Out Takes take on this one. We ended the program by spotlighting ‘She’s The He’, the closing night film at this year’s Mardi Gras Film festival, plus we paid tribute to two wonderful talents and LGBTQ allies, Catherine O’Hara and James Van Der Beek, who both sadly passed away recently. The post The Little Sister, Cashing Out and Wuthering Heights appeared first on Out Takes.

It is my honor to be with all of you today,” said Governor Spanberger. “An inauguration ceremony like this one, with all its tradition and pageantry, represents something profound and in its origin, something uniquely American, the peaceful transfer of power.”Spanberger said the tradition began when George Washington, a Virginian, opted to step down after two terms as President. She thanked former Governor Glenn Youngkin for his service, as well as the time that former Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears and former Attorney General Jason Miyares put in while in office.Spanberger also thanked generations that came before her that worked to ensure that women have the right not only to vote but also to hold office.“But who could only dream of a day like today?” Spanberger asked. “I stand before those who made it possible for a woman to also participate in that peaceful transfer of power and take that oath.”Spanberger noted that this is the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, drawing attention to Thomas Jefferson's role as Virginia's second governor. The first was Patrick Henry, who was sworn in in 1776.“Governor Henry is best known for his call against tyranny at St. John's Church, just up the road, words that helped launch the American Revolution,” Spanberger said. “But in his final public speech delivered in Virginia Years later in 1799, he made an appeal to his fellow citizens, warning against the divisions that were threatening our young country. His appeal remains timeless. He said, united we stand, divided we fall, Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.”Spanberger noted that the steps of the Virginia capitol were used by suffragists to lobby for the right for women to vote, a request denied for many years until 1920 when the U.S. Constitution was amended. She also noted that Virginia did not ratify the 19th Amendment until 1952.The new governor also noted that Virginia decided to call itself a Commonwealth upon independence and not just a state.“What's the difference?,” Spanberger said. “We, kids, pay attention. Someone may ask you this eventually. There's no difference. There is no difference in how we operate or function as a state. The difference lies in the intentions of our forefathers and the choice to indicate that here our government should serve the common good. That the voices of everyday Virginians, not kings, not aristocrats, not oligarchs, should. That the voices of everyday Virginian should drive us forward and that our prosperity depends on that union.”Turning to policy and the future, Spanberger said she would help guide Virginia during a time when the federal government is seeking to end support for rural hospitals, support for health care, and other outcomes sought by the current administration.“I know that some who are here today or watching from home may disagree with the litany in of challenges and the hardships that I laid out,” Spanberger said. “Your perspective may differ from mine, but that does not preclude us from working together where we may find common cause.”Spanberger said she looks forward to working with the General Assembly over the next four years and thanked her Cabinet for being willing to serve.“As we mark 250 years since the dawn of American freedom, what will our children, our grandchildren and their descendants write about this time in our Commonwealth's history? This chapter, 50, 100, 250 years from now, will they say that we let divisions fester or challenges overwhelm us? Or will they say that we stood up for what is right, fixed what is broken, and served the common good?”You can watch the entire inauguration ceremony on VPM or read the remarks on the website of the 75th Governor. Thanks for reading Charlottesville Community Engagement ! This post is public so feel free to share it.Several members of the Board of Visitors have resigned at Spanberger's requestThe Cavalier Daily is reporting that four members of the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors have resigned following a request from Governor Abigail Spanberger before she was sworn in.Shortly after Spanberger was elected, she asked the Board of Visitors to suspend a search for a new president following the resignation of Jim Ryan in June 2025. Former Governor Glenn Youngkin told her to stop interfering and the Board hired Scott Beardsley on December 19. Beardsley resigned as Dean of the Darden School of Business to take the job.The Board was already down to 12 appointees, all named by Youngkin, following the failure of five new nominees to get confirmed by the General Assembly.Rector Rachel Sheridan, Vice Rector Porter Wilkinson, and member Paul Manning all resigned on Friday. The New York Times reports that Doug Wetmore resigned today and their earlier reporting Spanberger has also asked Stephen Long to resign. The Cavalier Daily obtained a copy of Sheridan's resignation letter to Youngkin that blamed “political warfare” for the Board's inability to stabilize a University community where several groups expressed concern that Beardsley was appointed without their input. On Thursday, the Faculty Senate adopted a resolution calling for Spanberger to act.“The Faculty Senate calls upon Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger to exercise her statutory authority, review the actions of current Board members, remove those whose conduct has fallen short of the responsibilities of Visitors, and appoint qualified individuals to fill all vacancies on the Board,” reads one part of the resolution. The resolution also asks the new Board of Visitors to review the search process to determine if there need to be changes. As of publication, the Board of Visitors website has not yet been updated to reflect any resignations. However, Deputy Spokeswoman Bethanie Glover confirmed the four resignations.“President Beardsley and University leaders thank them for their service to UVA,” reads a brief statement sent in response to a query. The University of Virginia's Board of Visitors is next scheduled to meet on March 5. This is a developing story.Soon after being sworn in, Spanberger signed ten executive orders. One of them seeks reform of the way that members of governing bodies of state institutions of higher learning are appointed. Under Virginia's Constitution, the legislature must agree to the amendment twice with a House of Delegates election in between before it goes to voters.Democrats took advantage of a special session from 2024 that had never ended to convene last October to hold the first reference in the House of Delegates and the Senate. Democrats then picked up an additional 13 seats in the House of Delegates. The House of Delegates passed the second reference on January 14 after about 20 minutes of debate. Delegate Rodney Willett (D-58) is the chief patron of House Joint Resolution 4 which will allow for a one-time redistricting outside of the decennial reapportionment process.“This keeps Virginia's options open,” Willett said. “This would enable us to preserve flexibility. If the people approve it and then we implement it, we could make redistricting decisions but there's no mandate here to do so.”Willett said the Virginia Redistricting Commission would do the work of redrawing Congressional lines in 2031 after the next Census.Delegate Terry Kilgore (R-45) said the General Assembly should not overturn the will of voters who approved a Constitutional amendment in 2020 to give the power to draw Congressional districts to the bipartisan Virginia Redistricting Committee.“We shouldn't care about what other states are doing,” Kilgore said. “We should care about what Virginia is doing, what message we're sending to our constituents.”Kilgore urged his colleagues to follow the lead of Indiana where a redistricting push failed in December. In both the Indiana House and the Senate, some Republicans joined with Democrats to vote against an effort to redraw lines. (learn more on Wikipedia)Delegate Wren Williams (R-47) rose to ask a question of Willett.“In 2020, nearly two-thirds of Virginia told us they wanted politics out of our map making,” Williams said. “Why would we reverse course now even under what is alleged to be a carve out for extraordinary emergencies?”Willett said this is a measure in response to a president who has demanded state institutions make changes for his benefit.“Our hand was forced here by the extraordinary actions coming from Washington by a president who contacted not one, not two, but multiple states and directed them to redistrict and change the election picture and essentially disenfranchise Virginia voters and other states that would vote Democratic,” Willett said. “We couldn't stand for that. When a bully punches you, sometimes you have to punch back.”Delegate Tom Garrett (R-56) argued that it would be Virginia Republicans who would be disenfranchised if lines are drawn to give Democrats an advantage. He ran through a list of states that are pursuing redistricting.“California, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Utah, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, Florida, Maryland, Alabama, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota have all either done this or are looking at doing it,” Garrett said. “You know what makes Virginia different? We are the only state on the list that I named that had a constitutional amendment that passed in 99 out of 100 House of Delegates districts five short years ago.”Delegate Mark Sickles (D-17) reminded his colleagues that the Virginia Redistricting Commission failed to complete their job in October 2021.“That commission did not work like we hoped it would,” Sickles said. “And having a bipartisan thing, a group of Democrats and Republicans and citizens come up with these districts, it did not work. The court drew these seats. So I don't know how much reverence we have for that. But this is an emergency. If this is not an emergency for American democracy, I don't know what is.”Delegate Mark Simon (D-13) noted that if Virginia voters don't want to change the districts, they can vote accordingly.“You know what happens after this resolution passes?” Simon asked. “There's a referendum. We get to go back to the voters again and they're the ones who get to decide what we do going forward.”The vote was 62 in favor, 33 against, one abstention, and four not voting.A look at what other states are up to:Before we go over to the Senate, let's go through some of what can be known about other states listed by Delegate Garrett.* In November, voters in California approved Proposition 50 with 64.42 percent of the vote that redrew lines to target several Republican incumbents. (learn more on Wikipedia)* In Missouri, the legislature approved a new map for Congressional boundaries last September intended to reduce Democratic representation but a citizens group called People not Politicians are trying to force a referendum. Take a look at this January 9, 2026 story in the Missouri Independent for more information.* The North Carolina legislature approved a map in October 2025 designed to make it more difficult for one Democratic incumbent to get re-elected. Learn more in this Associated Press article from then. The situation in Utah is different as there were already legal clouds over redistricting related to an attempt to create an independent commission in 2018. According to an article by Katie McKeller in the Utah News Dispatch, a judge ordered a new map that would likely lead to one Democratic seat. Republicans are challenging.* The Texas legislature adopted a map last August intended to give Republicans five additional seats and this was briefly thrown out by a federal court. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled voted 6-3 to allow the new map to proceed. (learn more on Wikipedia)* The Ohio Redistricting Commission adopted a new map last October that gives Republicans an advantage. They did so before the legislature was set to do it themselves, reports Jeremy Pelzer for cleveland.com.* Some Democrats in Washington want to redraw the maps, but Scott Greenstone of KUOW reports there are obstacles to getting that done in 2026.* The situation in Louisiana is more complicated and I refer you to Ballotpedia.* New York Governor Kathy Hochul is exploring the idea of redistricting, reports Kate Lisa for Spectrum News.* North Dakota only has one Congressional District making redistricting irrelevant. Learn more on Ballotpedia.Senate DebateThe Virginia Senate took about 40 minutes on January 16 to go through the debate with Senator Christopher Head (R-3) introducing several amendments to House Joint Resolution 4. He made many of the same arguments as his colleagues in the House, arguing that voters had agreed to place the power of redistricting to a commission after the General Assembly gave them that choice in 2020.“Some of you weren't here then, but if you voted for it then and you thought that was a good idea because it was your ethics and your beliefs and they were foundational and fundamental,” Head said. “But now, because you hate the man that's in the White House, and that's really the only thing that's behind this, is that you hate the man that's in the White House and you want to blunt his power, then we're going to politically gerrymander and take away the rights of the people to have representation that represents them.”Senator Scott Surovell (D-34) said that Head's amendments should have been made on first reference. He said he did not support the creation of the Virginia Redistricting Commission but he could understand how those who did might change their mind now.“They didn't imagine that we're going to have a hyper-partisan fascist ideologue telling state legislatures around the country to basically redesign their districts to maximize his own personal political power,” Surovell said. “And to the extent anybody even thought about that, I think most people thought that there were people of principle in the Republican party that would stand up to it because they cared about the rule of law or system of government preserving democracy.”Head did not receive enough votes for his amendments.Surovell said he wished he did not have to support this move but felt there was no other choice.“When other states manipulate their maps to gain unfair advantage, we don't just harm,” Surovell said. “They don't just harm their own voters. They also harm Virginia's ability to have its fair representation in Congress. We're simply seeking to level the playing field in Congress which has already been. Which is being tilted against us and our state.Senator Mark Peake (R-22) wanted to know what would happen if voters approve the redistricting.“Do we come back into special session after the citizens have voted to draw the new congressional districts?” Peake asked.Surovell said there are still remaining questions to be answered but the maps would be available for the public to review before the referendum.Peake said if this passes, Democrats will do what they can to hold on to power.“You're going to do away with bipartisan redistricting,” Peake said. “You're going to try and put us in a 10 to 1 Democrat to Republican congressional districts, and then you're going to again resume gerrymandering the entire Commonwealth.”Senator Ryan McDougle (R-26) urged Democrats in Virginia to follow what some of the Republicans did in the Indiana legislature when they stopped a gerrymander.“Republicans in Indiana stood up to political pressure and said we're not going to play these political games,” McDougle said.In the Indiana House, 57 Republicans voted for the redistricting and 12 voted against, joining 29 Democrats. In the Senate, 21 Republicans joined 10 Democrats against the redistricting, and 19 Republicans voted for it.Senator Bill Stanley (R-7) pointed out that President Trump is unpopular, citing Democrats picking up 13 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates this past November.“It seems to me what this kerfuffle is all about is because the current president has encouraged some states to change their congressional makeups and the lines,” Stanley said. “The last time I checked, when he was elected in 2016. In 2018, Madam President, the Democrats picked up, I think 41 seats in Congress.”That appears to be accurate per Wikipedia.Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg (D-16) agreed that Trump is unpopular and said that is why is is seeking to redraw lines across the country.“As is so often true over the last 10 years of politics, every accusation is a confession,” VanValkenburg said. “The other side mistakes their inability to. To push back against the craziness of our current president for how we will act or are acting.”The vote in the senate was 21 to 18 with one abstention. What questions do you have?(image) The current Congressional lines in Virginia. Image by Wikipedia user Twotwofourtsix.Let's say a few things about #986I had not intended to do a second podcast today but I feel it is important for Virginians to hear the voices of people in our government. I also got caught up in the moment. I remember attending the inauguration of Governor Mark Warner as a reporter back when that happened. At the time I really thought I would have a career in public radio, but my desire for longer and longer stories met up against their need for shorter and shorter ones. When it was clear I was not going to get a job in the field, I tried to create my own. After fits and starts, here we are.I'm not going to any gala or celebration today. I'm going to keep working as that's what I want to do more. I've got to get the Week Ahead out tomorrow, write two stories for C-Ville Weekly and finish up a cover story article that I am procrastinating on. Never underestimate the power of procrastination, dear reader! But I need some music to get me through and the DJs from Buenos Aires strike again! This is a public episode. Discover Lafayette welcomes Melissa Bonin, celebrated artist, poet, lyricist, and author whose work is deeply rooted in the landscape, language, and spirit of South Louisiana. A native of New Iberia with French and Acadian ancestry, Melissa is widely recognized as one of Louisiana's leading contemporary landscape painters. Her work weaves together emotion, mythology, nature, and memory—often inspired by bayous, waterways, mist, and the movement of water. Melissa's multidisciplinary voice is beautifully expressed in her 160-page book, When Bayous Speak, which pairs poetry and paintings spanning more than two decades of her artistic career. The poetry in the book reflects five to six years of work, while the paintings represent some of her most personal and enduring visual pieces. The cover image, Dances on Water, embodies the themes that recur throughout her work—flow, reflection, and deep connection to place. Finding Her Voice Through Art Melissa shared that she was painfully shy as a child and struggled to communicate with others. Her earliest breakthrough came on the last day of kindergarten, when a teacher handed her a chalkboard. “There was something I was able to express myself with, without speaking,” she recalled. That moment marked the beginning of a lifelong relationship with art as language. Her grandfather, a horse trainer, would sit with her and draw simple figures, unknowingly nurturing her creative instincts. Even early recognition came with challenges; after entering a poster contest as a young child she didn’t win. She was told she couldn't have drawn the winning work herself. “But I did,” she said. Mentorship and Artistic Formation Melissa's artistic path was shaped by extraordinary mentorship. At Mount Carmel in New Iberia, teacher James Edmunds and his wife Susan exposed her to museums, music, and culture, taking her to the King Tut exhibit and the symphony in New Orleans. Edmunds introduced her to Elemore Morgan, Jr., who became a lifelong mentor. Through these mentors, Melissa began taking fine art classes at UL Lafayette while still in high school at only 15 years of age. Edmunds even received permission from the nuns to continue teaching her privately at his home. “The greatest thing he ever did for me was to get out of my way,” she said. Reflecting back on her early mentor in high school, Melissa says, “James Edmunds would have different media there. It would be watercolor or whatever. He’d say, I’ll be back in an hour. Then he’d come back and we’d discuss it. Then I’d go back to school.” Melissa went on to earn her degree in Fine Arts at USL (now UL Lafayette), studying under influential artists including Elemore Morgan Jr., Herman Mhire, and Bill Moreland. Language, Identity, and France Melissa's love for the French language developed alongside her art. Her parents belonged to what she called the “shamed generation” who did not speak French, yet her grandmother spoke only French. Wanting to communicate with her, Melissa taught herself French using a Bible she found in an armoire. Her academic journey led her abroad through scholarships from CODOFIL and LSU. She studied in Angers and Paris and described her first experience in France simply as “I'm home.” That connection continues to influence her work, which is often presented in both English and French. Art as a Living Practice Melissa described the moment she truly “found her voice” as an artist after her first major New Orleans show, when Elemore Morgan Jr. left her a message repeating, “Melissa, you have found your voice.” Her distinctive surface treatment—polished like “a gemstone or a precious metal”—became a defining element of her work. When asked how long it takes to create a painting, she quoted Picasso's famous response: “All my life.” Some works move quickly; others are painted over dozens of times. “The canvas tells you,” she said. “It's when you try to impose your will upon the canvas that you don't get too far.” Melissa Bonin shared on Facebook, “So happy to see this in Moncus Park today on my walk. What a lovely job the Haynie Family has done incorporating one of my wildflower paintings and one of my poems into their display along Lake Reaux.” Nature, Water, and Healing Melissa's work is deeply inspired by the natural world—water, mist, humidity, plant life, wildflowers, and birds. During a period of heartbreak, she began paddling her canoe on the bayou every afternoon. “When I got on the water, everything fell away,” she shared. That experience sparked her lifelong exploration of bayous as both subject and sanctuary. Today, birding has become part of her daily life and creative process. “Being out there and hearing the sounds of nature and the calls—I love it,” she said. Poetry, Rejection, and Resilience Melissa's poetry has reached international audiences, with residencies in Montreal and current opportunities in France. Reflecting on a defining moment at the Congrès Mondial in Canada—where she was the first woman to present—she recalled a comment from a well-known figure who told her, “They will always remember your painting, but your poetry will get you nowhere.” Her response was resolute: “I must have had some really good poetry to make a person have to formulate that kind of sentence.” Since then, her poetry has appeared in parks in Belgium, installations in Lafayette, and residencies across borders. “My advice is filter what people tell you,” she said. Living the Artist's Life Melissa spoke candidly about choosing to become a full-time artist after realizing her art income had surpassed her teaching salary. “I wish I would have done it sooner,” she said. Her advice to young creatives: trust the inner voice and begin before you feel completely ready. She also shared that meditation, movement, and dance—another lifelong love—play a vital role in her creative process. “When I'm really stuck, I move,” she said. “And then sometimes the answers come.” “Arianna Huffington had a quote that I love to live by. She said, “Go forward as if all the cards are stacked in your favor. And so for anyone who has a desire to paint or write, I encourage that. There’s something that happens to a person when they dig deep within themselves and really become acquainted with themselves. In that way, something beautiful happens and everyone around can feel it.” Upcoming Event Melissa will be featured in Bulles littéraires, a literary evening hosted by Alliance Française de Lafayette.

Greetings from East Africa Glocal Citizens! Well, kind of…this conversation was recorded last weekend from Nairobi on the eve of Father's Day and a day after the opening of my guest, Michael Soi's current group exhibition, The Print Press (https://web.facebook.com/michael.soi.7/posts/the-print-press-is-an-exhibit-of-woodcut-prints-by-various-nairobi-based-artist-/10162204021212545/?_rdc=1&_rdr), an exhibit of woodcut prints by various Nairobi based artist at the Alliance Française de Nairobi 13th - 29th of June. I met Michael in his studio at The Go Down Art Centre (https://thegodown.org) when I first visited Kenya in February and after an inspired conversation I wanted to be sure to share his story here. As you'll hear, he has been working in Nairobi since 1995 after completion of his fine art and art history studies. His distinctive work is inspired by contemporary life in Nairobi providing a photographic diary of Nairobi. It is also a satirical commentary of social, economic and political trends. His work explores relationships – intergenerational, interracial or generally what he calls the economics of love, commercial sex work and popular culture within the context of globalization and consumerism. A wonderful aspect of Michael's visual storytelling craft is that he's figured out the hacks that make his art accessible on many levels from the curious observer to the serious collector.
Each year one of the highlights of the French calendar in Australia is the Alliance Française French Film Festival which commences with the gala opening night of the 36th festival at Melbourne's Astor Theatre on March 5th. But it is not only here in Oz that French film is popular. 2024 was a record breaking year for attendance at the cinema in France, with a higher percentage of the population going to see a film there than in the US. I loved chatting to the fabulous people at the Alliance Française who are responsible for putting together the festival this year:Frédéric Alliod - AFFFF25 CEO & Artistic DirectorMarie-Hélène Predhom - Alliance Française Melbourne General ManagerSara Harrington - Alliance Française Event ManagerFrench cinema is so much more than a cliché... it's quirky, fun & intelligent. Generally French films have a wonderful depth and the 42 films in this year's AFFFF25 are no exception! There are more than 5,500 screenings across the country in the 2025 festival with regional towns now benefitting from some AFFFF25 action!Go to the LFF website for the links to the movies mentioned in this podcast chat, or just tune into to our great discussion about French film culture.**Louise Prichard is the host of the Loulabelle's FrancoFiles podcast.**Other Loulabelle's links:FrancoFile Fix on YouTubeLoulabelle's FrancoFiles Spotify Playlist Loulabelle's FrancoFiles InstagramLoulabelle's FrancoFiles website
About Gaby Casadesus Born Gabrielle l'Hôte, she studied at the Paris Conservatory with Louis Diémer and Marguerite Long and was awarded the first prize in piano at age 16. She met Claude Debussy at this time, as he was the judge for one of her competitions. Gaby later won the Prix Pagès, which was the most prestigious award in France at the time for which women were eligible. In 1921, she married the pianist Robert Casadesus and with him formed the Robert and Gaby Casadesus duo. The duo made many recordings of the four-hand piano repertoire. However, Gaby was also a significant soloist. She knew Maurice Ravel, Gabriel Fauré, Florent Schmitt and Moritz Moszkowski, and her interpretations were aided by their guidance. Her repertoire also included Felix Mendelssohn, whose music she effectively championed, and the keyboard composers of the Baroque era. As a teacher, Gaby Casadesus taught in the US, at the Salzburg Mozarteum, at the Académie Maurice Ravel in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and most notably at the American Conservatoire at Fontainebleau. Among her notable pupils are Donna Amato, David Deveau, Rudy Toth, and Vladimir Valjarević. After her husband's death in 1972, she worked with Grant Johannesen and Odette Valabrègue Wurtzburger, to found the Robert Casadesus International Piano Competition which ran from 1975 to 1993. Casadesus died November 12, 1999, at age 98 in Paris. She is buried with her husband and son, Jean in Recloses, department of Seine-et-Marne. About Thereselink to buy book -- https://www.amazon.com/Robert-Gaby-Casadesus-Piano-Recital/dp/B00000DSHBCasadesus Rawson Daughter of the late French pianists Robert and Gaby Casadesus, Therese Casadesus Rawson received a Ph.D. in French language and literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. She has taught French, Humanities, French Diction and French vocal repertoire to singers at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for nearly 30 years. Besides teaching and performing—she is a soprano focusing on Bach and French repertoire--Therese Casadesus Rawson is also active as a lecturer in a variety of topics pertaining to French culture, music, literature, painting, culinary arts. She has been and continues to be involved with French or Franco-American cultural institutions. She was President of the Alliance Française de Philadelphie for nearly 10 years, and has been President of the Fontainebleau Associations for 25 years: the stateside support group which helps organize and finance the summer Music and Fine Arts program at the Château de Fontainebleau. Therese's involvement with the Fontainebleau Schools is steeped in the legacy of her famous parents, Robert and Gaby, and her brother Jean, who were themselves devoted to the Fontainebleau Schools, teaching extensively at the Conservatoire Américain (the music side of the program). Remarkably, Robert and Gaby succeeded in running the program in New England during World War II and Gaby continued to teach until her passing in 1999 at the age of 98. The French Government awarded Therese the Palmes Académiques in recognition of her teaching activities, and, in 2001, she was named to the rank of Chevalier des Arts et Lettres on account of her efforts on behalf of Franco-American cultural affairs. Persophony and Persography as Symbols of Iranian Unity and the Reza-Khani OrderIn this presentation, delivered in Persian at the First International Symposium on Iranian Ancient Languages and Scripts - From Turpan to Ctesiphon - on May 15th, 2022, in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, I explore how the use of Persian, both in writing and speech over the past millennium, has contributed to the concept of Iranian unity and the national identity of the Iranian people. This idea is linked to the establishment of the Rezā Khān Order in 1914, which led to the founding of the first Iranian Academy, known as Farhangestan. The Academy aimed to foster and cultivate the Persian language and literature within Iran's borders. The creation of Farhangestān mirrors a broader tradition seen in Western countries, where language academies have sought to protect and nurture national languages for centuries. Examples include the Crusca Academy in Italy (1582), the Alliance Française in France (1620), and the Real Academia Española in Spain (1713). Farhangestān's history in Iran began on May 20, 1935. Although the media rarely acknowledges the early efforts of the Iranian Academy, particularly in the realm of linguistics and the selection and refinement of Persian vocabulary, it is important to note that its foundation was laid earlier, in 1924/1925, by representatives from the Ministries of War, Culture, and Art during the first Pahlavi era. The clear directive from Reza Shah in 1935, known as "Destūre Rezā Khani," formalized these efforts.Reza Shah's order was undoubtedly the most systematic and enduring response to the chaotic state of the Persian language at the end of the Qajar period and the early 20th century—a language that had been subjected to foreign influences for over a millennium, absorbing Arabic, Mongolian, and Turkish elements, and now faced the influx of European terms. In this talk, I will highlight some of the key efforts of the Farhangestān Academy, offering prominent examples, while also discussing the challenges the institution has encountered since its inception. For full access to the video, including the PowerPoint presentation, please CLIICK HEREپارسی نویسی و پارسی خوانی چونان نماد همبستگی ایرانی و دستور رضاخانیفرهنگستان چونان سازمانی که آرمان آن پاسداری، پشتیبانی، بالش و پرورش زبان ملی یک سرزمین است، در باختر زمین پیشینه ی گاه بیش از چهار سده را در برمیگیرد.

Our relationship with our parents and, more widely, with our ancestors' stories are some of the most formative & influential connections in many people's lives, both for good and bad. The impact of this relationship can be felt in so many different ways, not least of which in artistic expression. With me today is Violaine Huisman, a French author based in New York who recently became the Director of Cultural Affairs at the Alliance Française. She's the author of a trilogy of novels about her and her family. The first is called The Book of Mother published in 2018 and translated into English last year, the second is called Rose désert (translated maybe as “Desert Pink”) published in 2019 but not yet translated, and the third is Les monuments de Paris (“The Monuments of Paris”) which will be published this year. In this episode, Violaine and I cover a wide array of topics – the structure and linearity of her novels, the existential question of ‘Frenchness' and being a ‘French author in New York', and of course we speak of Marcel Proust, as well as some of the other major influences in her writing. It was a real pleasure to speak with Violaine about this powerful, family-driven trilogy which I absolutely recommend. In today's interview, we discussed Les Essais, by Michel de Montaigne (1580), a wide-ranging collection of essays, originally written in ‘Middle French', Saxifrage, by Catherine Cremnitz (1993) – Violaine's mother's own autobiography, and 10:04, by Ben Lerner (2014), a modern book of auto-fiction about a Manhattan-based author recently diagnosed with a life-threatening heart-condition. The best book Violaine has read in the last 12 months was Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo (1862), which tells the story of Jean Valjean and the other ‘miserable' characters of the early 1800s Paris underworld. The book she would take to a desert island was the Bible. Finally, a book that changed her mind was In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust (first published in 1913), about its narrator's life and childhood, and his reflections on the persistence of memory. Lit with Charles loves reviews. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd be so grateful if you could leave a review of your own, and follow me on Instagram at @litwithcharles. Let's get more people listening – and reading!
This is a re-play of a popular episode from 2019 when Debbie and Sam studied French in Provence in an immersion program. They planned to go back in 2020 but of course the pandemic intervened. Now, they've just completed another week of immersion in Avignon with their favorite French teacher, Julie Gaudin./////////////Don't miss Behind The Scenes for every new episode in Debbie's [B]OLD AGE newsletter. /////////////In the episode you'll hear Debbie talking with her husband Sam about a longstanding bucket list item: to live in France for an extended period in order to practice and improve their French. They both agree you can't become a true ex-pat in only two weeks but it's enough time to adopt a daily routine and to make a friend or two at the local boulangerie and at a favorite bar serving artisanal beer. Despite their many trips to Paris and other parts of France, they continue to find the French language and French culture both mysterious and alluring. French teachers can be a lonely bunch. But that doesn't mean they aren't part of a community of Francophones (and Francophiles) here in the US and abroad. As French teachers everywhere are gearing up for French week (November 1-8) join guest Terri Hammatt as she talks about the myriad of ways that French teachers can promote their programs and stay connected to the Francophone world, even if they are a department of one. Bio Terri was a French and French immersion teacher for 20 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She then served as supervisor of world languages and immersion programs at the Louisiana Department of Education, supporting Louisiana teachers and numerous international teachers who come to Louisiana to teach their own languages. In addition, Terri currently serves on the CODOFIL board (CODOFIL--the state agency responsible for the ongoing development of French), LFLTA, and the Louisiana Consortium of Immersion Schools. Terri has worked hand-in-hand with France's Education Nationale and the Ministère des affaires étrangères, Wallonie-Bruxelles (the French-speaking Community of Belgium); le Centre de la francophonie des Amériques and numerous entities as partners to enhance la francophonie internationale. Mr Blum's evidence becomes more outlandish and contradictory, yet despite gaping holes in his testimony, he maintains he's telling the truth. Instead, he accuses all of the women who've spoken out against him of lying.
