George Boutwell was a state legislator, the youngest Governor of Massachusetts, the first commissioner of the internal revenue, congressman, treasury secretary, and US senator. He was also a staunch antislavery advocate, close ally of Abraham Lincoln, and champion of black civil rights. Throughout his seven decades of public service, Boutwell left an unmistakable mark on American history. How is it then that you've likely never heard of him? In the latest episode of the History Tavern Podcast, I spoke with Jeffrey Boutwell about his new book Boutwell: Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy.

This week on The Whiskey Trip, Big Chief steps off the whiskey trail to sit down with singer-songwriter Colin Boutwell at Wilson Valley Mercantile Distillery. Together, they dive into whiskey, love, and music, making for a soulful and spirited conversation. Colin, a longtime whiskey enthusiast whose journey began with Old Grand-Dad, shares stories and songs that take Big Chief on a nostalgic ride through the back roads of the Texas Hill Country. Colin performs four songs during the show, showcasing remarkable vocal and guitar control, effortlessly transitioning between notes and dynamics to captivate the room. Throughout the episode, Colin savors Wilson Valley Mercantile's Texas Notch Bourbon on the rocks. This “seed-to-sip” whiskey boasts a mash bill of 51% corn, 34% wheat, and 15% oats—all grown at Evans Ranch—and is aged for one year in Bell County. An additional yeast used during fermentation adds depth, creating a robust flavor that shines in every sip. Meanwhile, Big Chief enjoys Wilson Valley Mercantile's Texas Three Way Bourbon neat. Featuring the same mash bill as the Notch, he describes it as the perfect session whiskey—a spirit that pairs beautifully with porch-sitting and music that touches the soul. Once again, Big Chief uses this pause from the whiskey trail to spotlight a talented musician, proving that whiskey and music are the perfect pairing. Cheers to another unforgettable journey on The Whiskey Trip!

Patients who are high utilizers, also known as multi-visit patients (MVPs) or frequent flyers, whether found in the ED, inpatient units or other departments, drive up readmission rates and tie up resources. Often, clinicians and administrators hold out little hope that they can end the multi-visit cycles of these patients. Yet, by looking at a patient's multiple visits as a symptom of a deeper problem, and then identifying and rectifying that underlying problem, clinicians can end a patient's cycle of care utilization. On this podcast, a leading expert in high-utilizer care discusses her MVP Method which has been used by rural hospitals, community hospitals, safety net hospitals, and academic medical centers across the country. Dr. Amy Boutwell, President of Collaborative Healthcare Strategies, is a nationally recognized thought leader in the field of reducing readmissions and improving care for highest risk and multi-visit patients. She is the developer of the STAAR, ASPIRE, ASPIRE+ and MVP methods to reduce avoidable acute-care utilization and deliver whole-person care across settings and over time. The general principles and actions of the MVP Method can revolutionize care, break the cycle of utilization and change the life of your patients.  The Institute for Advancing Health Value has released an Intelligence Brief and Case Study to accompany this special podcast episode. NC State University Industry Expansion Solutions' (IES) North Carolina Defense Manufacturing Community Support Program (NC DMCSP), creates opportunities for smart textile innovators.  As our lives become ever connected through smart phones, tablets and other devices, the way we interact has changed dramatically and that even applies to textiles. Textiles come in a wide variety of forms, from clothing to bedding to household items. Smart textiles include the next generation of wearable technologies. They combine textile design with advanced sensing capabilities. This new class of materials promises to revolutionize the future of wearable computing. In 2021, the Department of Defense's (DoD) Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) awarded North Carolina State University IES a grant under the Defense Manufacturing Community Support Program (DMCSP). The DMCSP is designed to support long-term community investments that strengthen national security innovation and expand the capabilities of the defense manufacturing industrial ecosystem. The program was created to recognize communities that demonstrate best practices in attracting and expanding defense manufacturing by bringing together key local stakeholders and using long-term planning that integrates targeted public and private investments across a community's entire defense industrial ecosystem. In this episode of Clocking In Phil Mintz sits down with Dr. William Reynolds and Dr. Casey Boutwell - two participants in the NC DMCSP sponsored propeller project looking to market their breakthrough smart textile technology.  Founded in 2017, Onda Vision Technologies (OVT) is a North Carolina State University startup company. OVT is a spin-out company from the North Carolina State University's Advanced Self-Powered Systems Integrated Sensors and Technologies (ASSIST) Center, which is a National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored Nanosystems Engineering Research Center (NERC).  Onda Vision has developed a wearable sensor for real-time hydration monitoring to optimize human performance and health. Onda Vision's Founder, Dr. William D. Reynolds, Jr Ph.D, has over 20 years of experience in research and development between the commercial and government sector. His management experience extends over fifteen years of building and leading high-performing corporate science and engineering teams. Onda Vision are developing a wearable sensor that has the ability to monitor body hydration in real-time. We live in a monolingual society, and, unfortunately, the belief that English is the superior language is what most of our federal and state laws were founded on and still support. Today's guest combines her love of learning about language and cultures with a passion for the law, and she is on a mission to make education more equitable for our ELL students. Brooke Boutwell has firsthand experience as a multilingual learner. She knows what it's like to live in a foreign country as a student without any academic support or accommodations and how much that can impact a student's confidence and self-esteem. Brooke is dedicated to helping teachers support their ELL students in the classroom so they can be successful and receive the education they deserve. In this episode, Brooke shares how her own experiences as a multilingual learner shaped her career as an educator. She also shares helpful tips and strategies any teacher can use to create a supportive learning environment for their ELL students. When we teach with our ELLs in mind, all of our students succeed. One of Boutwell Studios' favorite musicians, a one-man orchestra who can play nearly every instrument you can imagine. He has composed and performed hundreds of tunes for Ken Burns documentaries. Greg Bass and Mark Harrelson join Kelley Buttrick in this episode along with a variety of instruments that Bobby brought along to the studio for this episode.   Bobby loves history and music and the relationship between the two. Even before people could read and write, they used songs to pass down information from generation to generation. Music has always been used to tell stories and convey emotions in the way that words alone can't do. There's a passion and interest in historical music, specifically in the Civil War, when the American music industry got it's legs. Bobby's work in the history of music in the Civil War is how Bobby connected with Ken Burns. He has since had the opportunity to work with Burns performing and interpreting historical music on 18 projects. He interprets more than just the tempo. Not only the instruments but also the melody and how you express the notes and emotions make a difference in the interpretation of the music.   Bobby contributed more than 40 minutes of music to the Ken Burns Country Music project as well. Bobby's approach to film music is that it should support what is happening in the scene and not overtake it. It can be so powerful and emotional, you have to be careful to support the scene and not detract from it.     The Boutwell team and Bobby talk about his influences and favorite composers through time, from Scottish and Irish composers to Appalachian music and the music of Vietnam. One of Bobby's favorite tunes is a 19th century song he performed for Lewis & Clark, called “Beech Spring”.    You won't want to miss this episode and with the treat of live performances by Bobby on guitar.   For more on the world of audio branding and sound design, subscribe to the Sounds Creative podcast at https://soundscreative.libsyn.com/. Call it alchemy or magic or voodoo, it's a powerful thing when sound design meets amazing images to create kickass animation. As Senior Director / Animator at Big Communications, it's Ali Clark's job to create and execute killer animation for her clients. Ali came by for a visit with Lane McGiboney, Van Gunter and Kelley Buttrick to share some secrets about how she creates her magic.   Ali has executive produced documentaries, directed music videos and has worked with sound, video and animation for more than 10 years. She shares how she learned to harness the power of audio in the creative process. In a recent project for the Sidewalk Film Festival Ali worked with the Boutwell Studios team to create a Sponsor Trailer starting with audio and building the images around the sound.   Audio in animation projects is important as well because animation is so contingent on timing. Sometimes a piece of music influences the timing of the animation based on the BPM or rhythms and whatever might already currently be embedded to the music. You're animating to what already exists because it feels right. You can also create a soundscape and then animate to that and rather than creating timings and pacing around what's already existent in a piece of music.   Sound and music is incredibly powerful. It has the ability to take over our emotions and lead us in a direction. It paints a picture for you; it fills in the gaps. Sound design makes the visuals feel alive and real. You don't realize how amazing sound is until someone puts the right sound to the thing that you're working on. It tells a story all on its own. It gives you a bigger picture of the world and it fills in the gaps. Whether it's in advertising, creative projects, documentaries and animation, we're telling stories, communicating, emotions and feelings.   Ali and the Boutwell team are huge supporters of Birmingham's Sidewalk Film Festival. It brings diverse people from the community together every year for a weekend celebrating independent film and creativity. People from all over the world to experience the southern charm and creativity that is alive in Birmingham.   Read the full transcript here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4bn1qk023weotb2/SOUNDS%20CREATIVE%20-%20ALI%20CLARK%20-%20MIX_REV2.mp3.docx?dl=0   You can see the Sidewalk Sponsor trailer that we talked about on the podcast on the Boutwell Studio's website, Boutwellstudios.com.
