//The Wire//2300Z January 22, 2026////ROUTINE////BLUF: ICE OPERATIONS CONTINUE IN MAINE. THREE ARRESTS MADE IN MINNEAPOLIS REGARDING CITIES CHURCH INCIDENT. SEVERE WEATHER SYSTEM EXPECTED TO SWEEP THROUGH AMERICAN SOUTHEAST THIS WEEKEND.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Maine: DHS surge operations continue, with arrests being noted in Portland and Lewiston. This campaign has been dubbed "Operation Catch-Of-The-Day", and seeks to target known violent criminals throughout the state.Analyst Comment: So far, resistance to ICE is minimal, with most of the efforts to harass ICE not taking form as they have in Minneapolis. None of the madness of Minneapolis has carried over to Maine as of yet, and the arrest of extremely violent criminals is going smoothly so far. However, this should be expected to increase over time as various activist groups transition into the active resistance phases throughout the area.Minneapolis: Overnight, several bomb threats were made at various locations around the city. Locals report that emails alleging the emplacement of pipe bombs were sent to several hotels, as well as the Federal Courthouse downtown. After some time, all threats were confirmed to be unfounded.Following up on the raid at Cities Church which took place four days ago, three arrests have been made in conjunction with the investigation. William Kelly, Nekima Levy Armstrong, and Chauntyll Louisa Allen have been arrested for violations of the FACE Act.Analyst Comment: Considering that these are the first arrests made during this high-profile incident, it's likely that these arrests will be used to fuel more demonstrations. Right now, the other agitators have not been arrested, so the Key Leadership that helped plan the initial raid is still free to plan other raids this Sunday.Southeastern USA: A severe winter weather system is forecasted to arrive this weekend, bringing unseasonably heavy ice and snowfall for much of the American southeast. Upwards of 12 inches of snow and potentially several inches of ice are called for as the weather system descends on the region.Analyst Comment: This much snow and ice in a region that typically doesn't get much at all, has a tendency to break things. If these forecasts are accurate, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime winter weather event that has the potential to severely impact public infrastructure in many areas.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Over the past few days, a new demographic of agitator has been noted interfering with ICE operations...postal workers. Around the nation, several postal workers have been observed harassing ICE agents while on the job this week, in official USPS vehicles while actively working a shift. In once case, a USPS worker recording ICE agents shouted at them that he had immunity from arrest, because he was a federal employee. This is obviously not true; being a mailman does not grant any sort of immunity from arrest at all, however this is clearly what many mail carriers who deliver our ballots seem to think. In Minneapolis specifically, last month the Democratic Socialists of America (a far-left political militant organization) held self-described Communist Revolutionary protests for federal postal workers, on federal property. Postal workers at the Powderhorn and Lake Street Post Offices were upset that federal agents had used their parking lots to stage for immigration enforcement operations. As a result the DSA helped them to organize protests at their own federal facilities, which are becoming increasingly more active strongholds.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2undergroundDisclaimer: No LLMs were used in the writing of this report.//END REPORT//

//The Wire//2300Z January 21, 2026////ROUTINE////BLUF: UNITED STATES SEIZES ANOTHER OIL TANKER IN CARIBBEAN. ICE BEGINS SURGE OPERATIONS IN MAINE. DHS-INVOLVED SHOOTING REPORTED IN CALIFORNIA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Caribbean: Yesterday afternoon US SOUTHCOM announced the seizure of the tanker *SAGITTA*, continuing the operation to seize sanctioned vessels throughout the region.Analyst Comment: This vessel had been on the sanctions list for a while, and regularly smuggled oil from Venezuela to Russia. This is the seventh oil tanker seized so far during this campaign.-HomeFront-California: This morning a DHS-involved shooting was reported in Los Angeles, in the vicinity of 126th Street and Mona Boulevard in Willowbrook. DHS agents were attempting to detain an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, who was wanted for violent crimes as well as human trafficking. During the operation to arrest him, he attacked agents, resulting in at least one officer discharging his weapon. Nobody was hit during the engagement, however the agent who engaged the suspect suffered unspecified wounds during the incident.USA: Around the nation, yesterday's national walkout campaign took place largely without much incident or impact. Several small demonstrations were noted in a few major cities, but nothing major. Several larger demonstrations and walk out campaigns are scheduled for later this week, and a general nationwide labor strike is planned for Friday. Separately, the National March for Life is scheduled to take place in Washington D.C. on Friday, which is usually a fairly large event every year. Counter-protesters usually always make a presence, and since this year's demonstration coincides with a labor strike, it's possible that bigger crowds might turn out on all sides.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In Maine, tensions are rising on a few different fronts. Following the recent scandals involving Somali fraud in Minneapolis, similar investigations have been underway throughout the state, which have uncovered fraud on an industrial scale in Lewiston. Over the past few weeks, more indictments and instances of fraud have come to light, which has brought increased scrutiny to smaller cities (such as Lewiston) where fraud appears to be running rampant.Separately, on the immigration front, ICE has begun surge operations throughout the state. ICE agents have already been carrying out immigration law enforcement operations in the state for some time, however due to the national spotlight being placed on Minneapolis, activists groups in Maine are eager to combat ICE in their state as well.Continuing the trend of the past few months, several hotlines have been established by NGOs, which specifically aid and abet illegals in evading capture in Maine. For context, the website of just one of these organizations, the Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition, lists total of 112 different organizations and other NGOs that are in their network, which provide resources to illegals evading immigration law.To put this number in perspective, Maine only has about 30 hospitals throughout the state, so there are approximately three times more immigration support facilities than there are medical facilities in the entire state. And on top of that, this is just one network and their partners; there are dozens more like this. They even have a handy link analysis chart already built on their own website, which shows the links between the dozens of agencies all fighting to interfere with immigration enforcement operations. This points not only to the significance of the funding and organization of all of this, but also how substantial of an effort is being undertaken to evade the enforcement of immigration law.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2undergroundDisclaimer: No LLMs were

//The Wire//2300Z January 13, 2026////ROUTINE////BLUF: LOS ANGELES TERRORIST RELEASED ON BAIL AFTER BEING CHARGED ONLY WITH A MISDEMEANOR. SOMALI FRAUD INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE IN MAINE. RIOTS CONTINUE IN MINNEAPOLIS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Minneapolis: The nightly riots continued yesterday evening, with unrest largely centering around the Whipple Federal Building. Tear gas has been deployed at this location daily, as rioters routinely try to block vehicles from entering/exiting the facility's Entry Control Point (ECP). Overnight, the perimeter at the Federal Building was expanded and fortified with more fencing. Throughout the city, most of the kinetic activity has been confined to E 34th Street, with tear gas and flashbangs being used regularly in a defensive role, to prevent rioters from physically assaulting ICE agents during arrests.Maine: Investigations into Somali fraud have continued to expand. In the town of Lewiston, a Somalian man at the center of recent scandal has resigned a few days after being sworn in. Iman Osman was reportedly elected to office last month, even though he had been indicted by a federal grand jury for stealing firearms.Analyst Comment: The Osman case has been developing for a while. Scandal first arose after citizens realized that he committed fraud on his campaign paperwork regarding his official residence. His official residence as per campaign paperwork is actually a vacant building that had been condemned because it had been used as a meth lab, so no one can verify that he actually lives in the district. Yesterday, the other members of the City Council voted to investigate his residency status, and Osman's only act as a City Councilor was to be the only vote against the investigation into himself. After the votes came out 6-1 against him, he resigned.California: The man who carried out the vehicle ramming attack at the Iranian protest in Los Angeles has been identified as Calor Madanescht. As the attack only wounded two people (both of whom refused medical care at the scene), the assailant has only been charged with reckless driving. Madanescht's bond has been set at zero dollars (the standard for misdemeanors in California), and he was released from jail Monday afternoon.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: In their own press release, the LAPD admits that he intended to ram the crowd and police officers, forcing several of them to jump out of the way (thus confirming deadly intent). It must be noted that the details of this case are pretty sketchy overall, considering how the attacker did not cause nearly as much damage as he could have. The odd statements found on the assailant's social media page, and the fact that he claims to be an Iranian refugee who happens to have an incredibly non-Iranian name, all add to the strangeness of this incident. However, just because this guy is the most ineffective terrorist in recent memory doesn't mean that he isn't still a terrorist. And now, he's back on the street at a time when Iranian protests are continuing throughout Los Angeles, and tensions remain palpably high in the Middle East.Any time that tensions escalate overseas regarding a hot-button issue, these tensions nearly always are mirrored within the American homeland, which often manifest in attacks or at minimum clashes between protest groups. In this case, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force are investigating the attack, which is a moot point if the terrorist has been released by the local authorities. As anti-regime protests (of varying size) are fairly regular throughout Los Angeles, it's quite likely that the original assailant himself, but more likely others who will see that he got away with this, will conduct copycat vehicle ramming attacks over the next few days. Whether or not any terrorist is willing to capitalize on this is anyone's guess, but the situation

‘Tis the season for exchanging greetings, sending salutations, and dashing off (humblebrag) holiday letters. But chances are, there's someone you haven't reached out to yet…so what are you waiting for?Today Now or Never is nudging you to finally get those meaningful messages out into the world, starting with our own Trevor Dineen. For the past three (!) years, a complete stranger with Trevor's old phone number, has been redirecting his birthday messages and phone calls. Trevor has never spoken to him, but today, he calls up this helpful stranger to say thanks. When her baby boy Lewiston was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Calgary's Jessica Janzen was determined his short life would be full of joy. That meant dance parties to Can't Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake. Now, Jessica is trying to get Timberlake to join her in a dance for what would be Lewiston's 10th birthday. When Laurie Froman was a teenager growing up in Six Nations of the Grand River, her dad used to do little drawings on her lunch bags, along with this simple message: “Have a good day. Love, Dad.” Laurie tells us why she's hung on to these paper lunchbags for 35 years, and why the message is even more dear to her since her dad Cecil passed away. Toronto's Cheryl Swanson didn't expect to give birth in her living room, but her son had other plans. Ever since that night she's held onto a debt of gratitude that she needs to deliver. The question is: twelve years later, can we find the paramedic to make it happen? When her colleagues at the University of Regina learned that Angela was fleeing domestic abuse, they stepped up and helped her feel safe. Angela shares the difference it made and how other workplaces can do the same.Keith Merker wrote a Christmas song to cheer up his wife Lindsay as she was going through chemotherapy. The couple wasn't in the spirit to enjoy the song at the time, so it collected dust for over a decade…Until this year, when Keith was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. The family is now on a mission to use the song to spread a message of joy and hope as widely and loudly as they possibly can.

On this week's episode of The Origins Podcast, I am excited to release a conversation that has been sitting in our archives for more than a year. When we first recorded this discussion with conflict mediator and systems thinker Diana McLain Smith, political polarization was already a significant national and international problem. It has only gotten worse. The world seems more tribal than ever, and there is constant pressure to have to pick a side in every argument and not listen to any different opinions, or even divergent facts. In this episode, we step back from that noise and ask what our deep evolutionary wiring for in group loyalty means in a complex modern democracy, how history and culture can turn ordinary differences into hardened divides, and what it might take to reduce the space between “us” and “them” rather than accept permanent hostility as normal.Through stories that range from local communities like Billings, Montana and Lewiston, Maine to the quiet work of reform in the United States Congress, Diana draws on decades of experience with families, organizations, and civic coalitions to show that citizens are not as powerless as we often feel, especially when we resist the demand for instant certainty and allow ourselves to say, “I do not know, I have not really thought about that before. I'm not on any one side. Let me look at the evidence before I form an opinion.”This is the basis of much of the scientific method, and it is something that we can all learn to do too. The benefits are immediate. You approach life with more curiosity, and you are freer from assumptions and biases.Conversations like this go to the heart of the Origins Project Foundation mission, which is to bring the habits of mind that underlie science into our shared public life. My conversations on the podcast blend serious works in physics, psychology, and history with urgent questions about how we live together, and to model what it looks like to treat ideas as hypotheses to be tested rather than badges of tribal identity. In an environment that rewards outrage more than understanding, a commitment to evidence, curiosity, and a willingness to change one's mind is not just an intellectual posture, it is a civic act. This episode with Diana is offered in that spirit. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. In a powerful new conversation, Alivia Goncalves — sister of Kaylee Goncalves, one of the victims in the University of Idaho murders — is breaking her silence about her private meeting with prosecutors and investigators in Lewiston, Idaho in an interview with Brian Entin. We discuss what she revealed to him. For the first time, Alivia shares what really happened behind closed doors on October 6th, when she sat alone across from members of the prosecution team, Idaho State Police, and Moscow PD — determined to learn everything she could about her sister's murder and the evidence against Bryan Kohberger. In this emotional, revealing discussion, Alivia describes the meeting as “traumatizing but necessary.” She opens up about what it was like to see key evidence firsthand — including the full surveillance timeline tracking Kohberger's movements from 3:00 to 4:20 a.m., the cell tower CAST data showing 23 visits to the victims' home, and even one carefully redacted crime scene photo. She also talks about the moment prosecutor Bill Thompson admitted he couldn't guarantee that sensitive images would never leak — a moment that pushed her to face the unthinkable rather than risk being blindsided online later. Alivia reveals new context about Kohberger's Amazon knife purchase, the witness list including one of his sisters, and her reaction to recently unsealed Washington State University reports detailing multiple complaints from women who said Kohberger made them feel unsafe. But the heart of this story isn't just the evidence — it's Alivia's ongoing mission. She's building a digital archive to preserve the full truth of what happened to Kaylee, Maddie, Xana, and Ethan — to protect their legacy from conspiracy theories and online distortion. In October 2023, a 40-year-old man armed with semi-automatic rifle opened fire inside a bowling alley and later at a nearby restaurant in the small city of Lewiston, Maine. Between the two incidents, 18 people died and 13 were injured. Disturbingly, the Lewiston shooting was one for more than 650 mass shootings in the United States in 2023, defined as a shooting event with four or more victims. With the U.S. continuing to experience hundreds of these incidents every year, police, fire, EMS, and organizations like the American Red Cross are refining how they prepare and respond to these incidents.  On today's podcast, we talk with John Montes, who led the Red Cross's response and recovery efforts in Lewiston and was also instrumental in developing NFPA 3000, the standard for Active Shooter/Hostile Response program. I talked to Montes about the complexities of the Lewiston response, what lessons were learned, and what safety agencies should be doing now to prepare for mass shooting incidents.  LINKS Learn more about the American Red Cross Read up on the creation of NFPA 3000, and one city's journey to implementing it. Trump Sues Wall Street Journal Over Epstein Birthday Letter Allegation President Trump files a lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and News Corp over a report claiming he drew a suggestive birthday card for Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. Trump calls the letter fake and denies the language or drawing style matches his. Bryan explains this is what prompted Trump to denounce the Epstein case earlier this week and argues the leak may be tied to fired DOJ official Maurene Comey. Congress Moves to Slash Billions from Global Aid and Public Broadcasting The House is expected to approve a rescissions bill that cuts $9 billion from foreign aid and media outlets like NPR and PBS. Democrats call the cuts cruel, while Trump's budget chief confirms more clawback bills are coming. Thailand Ups Tariff Offer to Avoid Trade Penalties Thailand increases its offer to allow 90% of U.S. goods tariff-free, part of Trump's broader strategy to open global markets for American products. The White House has not yet said if it will accept the revised deal. 93% Tariff on Chinese Graphite Set to Boost U.S. Mining The U.S. announces steep tariffs on graphite imports from China, a critical mineral for batteries and aerospace. The move is expected to revive domestic projects in Alaska, Alabama, and Louisiana that have long struggled to compete with Chinese state-subsidized graphite. Trump Halts Plan to Remove Columbia River Hydropower Dams Reversing a Biden-era decision, Trump defends the Pacific Northwest's dams from removal. The decision preserves 24/7 electricity for AI data centers, agriculture, and irrigation, while ensuring continued barge access for inland cities like Lewiston, Idaho. Coca-Cola Drops Corn Syrup Under Health Secretary RFK Jr.'s Push The company will shift from high-fructose corn syrup to sugar, a change long advocated by Health Secretary Bobby Kennedy Jr. Farmers in the Midwest worry about lost income, while Florida and Brazil sugar producers stand to gain. Ice Cream Industry to Remove Synthetic Dyes by 2027 Forty major ice cream brands will eliminate petroleum-derived colorants, but the transition will take years due to the farming cycles of natural color sources like beets. New Delays for Air Force One Due to Security Clearance Issues Skilled workers at Boeing's Seattle plant are failing security screenings, slowing production of the next presidential jets. Even the Qatar 747, once floated as a backup, will need similar vetting. Chinese Investors Buying Up U.S. Homes in Record Numbers Chinese buyers spent $13.7 billion on U.S. homes this year, up 83 percent, mostly in Democrat-led states like California. Bryan raises concerns about affordability and national security. China Pushes to Control Panama Canal Deal, Trump May Respond Beijing threatens to block a port sale in Panama unless its state-owned firm COSCO gets a share. Trump is reportedly furious and may use military pressure to prevent Chinese involvement in canal operations. Ukraine Proposes Drone-for-Weapons Swap with U.S. President Zelenskyy offers U.S. access to battlefield-hardened drone technology in exchange for American missile systems. Trump is reportedly intrigued, and Bryan calls it a win-win—though argues we should get the tech for free. Study Links Bright Evening Light to Heart Risk Australian researchers find that excessive nighttime light exposure increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure by up to 45 percent. Bryan urges listeners to shut off devices before bed—or just go full Amish. "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." – John 8:32
