What’d you do this weekend? M: Hey, Keiko. I went to Miyajima on Sunday! It was my first time going. W: Oh, that sounds fun. So, you went to Itsukushima Shrine? M: Of course! Actually, though, my main reason for going to Miyajima was to climb Mount Misen. But it rained so much on Sunday I decided to hike on a different day. W: Aw, too bad you weren’t able to hike. But Itsukushima Shrine’s really good. It’s one of the most iconic Japanese landmarks, I think. M: I can see why. I think that the clouds and rain made for a very beautiful backdrop, actually. W: Yeah, whenever I go to shrines on rainy days, I feel that I can be more reflective. M: Probably because there aren’t as many people there! Ha ha. W: That’s true… Oh, since it was raining, were you UNable to pet the deer? M: When it really started to pour, all the deer hid under bridges and trees to escape the rain. But before that-- jeez, are those guys annoying! W: Ha ha. Every time I go to Miyajima, I have to fend off the deer! Did they try to open your bag to look for food? M: I didn’t have a bag with me, but I DID have a granola bar in my pocket. I forgot about it, so I was trying to figure out why there were deer following me! Then, when I finally stopped walking, they tried to go inside of my pants! W: Ha ha. Oh my gosh… Well, now you know better! Be careful, though; the deer will try to eat anything that they think is food. One time I went to Miyajima with a friend, and a deer took a bite out of the homework she had in her purse! M: Ha ha! In America we joke about how “my dog ate my homework,” but I wonder what teacher would ever believe “a deer ate my homework”! W: Nice to meet you too! Thanks for buying me a ticket for the Sake Festival. I can't wait to drink sake for the first time in my life! M: No problem! It must have been an arduous trip to come all the way to Saijo from Michigan. You should relieve your stress with alcohol today! Ha ha. (They enter the Sake Hiroba) W: Wow… look at how many people are here… It's so crowded!! M: Welcome to the Sake Hiroba, or in English: the Sake Square. Get a sake cup. It's called o-choko in Japanese. W: What? Choco? Ha ha. That's a funny name. Boy, it sure is a small cup. It's totally different from a beer glass or whiskey shot glass. M: Yep. Hey, would you like your sake sweet or drier? W: Oh, sweet sounds good. By the way, how do you say "cheers" in Japanese? M: We say kanpai! Let's do it. Kanpai! W: Kan..kan-pai? Wow, that's hard to pronounce. Anyway kanpai! M: Wow… This is really good. The flavor's unbelievable. What do you think about it? W: Yeah, it's pretty sweet and tastes good. I think I can drink lots of this. Hey, wait: your face is flushing! Are you alright? M: Um… I'm totally fine. Don't worry about me… Oh, sorry, I need… I need to go to the bathroom. I think I'm about to puke! W: What? Don't tell me he can't drink any alcohol? Well… I have no choice but to drink by myself! (Written by Kyoung Jo) やさしい英語会話 (302) Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki M: Reiko, I LOVE trying new types of food. Any recommendations for food in Hiroshima? W: Yeah. Hiroshima's famous for oysters… and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. M: Woo, oysters. I'm no big fan of them. Um… What is o-ko-no…? W: Ha ha: O-ko-no-mi-ya-ki. It's hard to say. It's a traditional Japanese pancake, made with noodles. It's got a savory flavor. People eat it for lunch or dinner. M: Hmm.. Pancakes made with noodles? What's in o-ko-no… W: Okonomiyaki. In Hiroshima style, it's got layers—some batter, some cabbage, some noodles. Inside you can put whatever you want, such as pork, cheese, squid, or octopus. Then, you can pour special okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise on top, according to your preference. M: Hmm… I can surely conjure up THAT image. It sounds pretty good! By the way, why do they call it o-ko-no… W: Okonomiyaki. That's a good question! Okonomi in Japanese means "your preference," and yaki means grill. So, it means you can put in any materials that you would like to add, according to your preference, and grill them. M: So, we can put anything that we like in it? W: Yeah… Hey, why that silly expression on your face. You sound a bit suspicious… M: Well… Can we put, like, dark beer in it? Or, coffee flavorings? Or, can we put apples or strawberries as an additional topping? That would make the pancakes much better! Trust me! W: What? What are you talking about? That sounds more like a colossal mess! M: Ha ha! Don't you want to try something revolutionary? W: Aww… all this talk about okonomiyaki has made me hungry. Let's go to an okonomiyaki restaurant today. I know a good one! (Written by Kyoung Jo) やさしい英語会話 (301) Hiroshima Castle Situation: A foreign tourist is walking in Hiroshima M: Excuse me… Would you know how to get to Hiroshima Castle? W: Um… I'll take you there! I'm also going near there, and it's close! M: Really? Great! Thanks so much! Hey, I'm Mike. Could I ask your name? W: I'm Reiko. Nice to meet you. M: Very cool! So… do we need to take a bus or a city train to get there? W: Nope. It's only a few minutes over there. M: Hey, would you know anything about the history of the castle? W: Um… A bit… I think it was built in about the 1590s, by a daimyo named Mori Terumoto. He was one of the leaders on the Council of Five Elders, which was set up by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. M: Aww, I've heard of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. W: But the castle was destroyed during the atomic bombing in 1945. So the castle you'll see is just a replica of the original castle. Hmm… you might be disappointed a little, if you're expecting the splendor of Osaka or Himeji Castle. M: I'm fine. I wanted to see Hiroshima Castle, because I heard it's one of the most famous landmarks in Hiroshima. W: You're right! Anyway, here it is. We've arrived at the castle gate. M: Oh, already? Great! Wow… I like the landscape—how the castle's surrounded by water. It gives, like, an image of the stereotypical traditional Japanese castle. W: Yeah. The big tower of the castle, you see in front, is the main tower, called the tenshu in Japanese. This new Hiroshima Castle only features the main tower. Over here! W: Oh! Hi Sky! It’s SO good to see you again! Thanks for inviting me to come here. M: Welcome to the Philippines! Mabuhay! W: Thanks! Wow, I didn’t expect it would be THIS hot. Is it always like this here? M: Yep. It’s hot the whole year. That’s why the Philippines’ beaches are really famous: the beautiful white sand and clear emerald green sea, PLUS the right hot weather. A perfect combination! W: Hey, I’ve heard that Boracay is one of the best beaches in Asia. It’s in the Philippines, right? M: Ha ha! What a coincidence! We’ll go there the day after tomorrow! W: Really? I’m glad that I have YOU as my friend, Sky. I really trust you, that you’re gonna make my first ever trip to the Philippines so exciting! M: OK. Satomi. Just remember that I’m expecting a lot once I visit Japan someday! W: Sure! Hey, where are we gonna go today? M: Well, I was thinking… let’s go to the Philippine National Museum, the Philippine Arts Museum, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the historic city of Vigan.. W: Hey, wait, wait, wait! We’re just gonna go to museums and historical places today? Come on, I’m not a high school student anymore going on a field trip! M: Ha ha… Satomi, since you’re here in the Philippines, I want you to learn about our history and culture. Besides, it’s really fun going to museums! W: Oh, Sky, you never change! You’re still a nerd! Ha ha… Wait... Where are we going to go tomorrow, then? M: We’ll go to the National Library of the Philippines! Oh my goodness, I can’t wait to go there! W: The National Library? Ah!! I take back what I said that this trip is going to be exciting... (Sound of cars, people) W: Sky, look! Is that a Jeepney? M: You’re right, Satomi! Jeepneys are famous here in the Philippines. I used to ride a jeepney going to school when I was in my first year of high school. W: That’s awesome! We don’t have jeepneys in Japan. Hey, look! There’s a motorcycle with a small house attached to its side…? M: Ha ha! That’s a tricycle! We call it a tricycle, because it has 3 wheels: 2 wheels from the motorcycle and 1 wheel beside the side car. W: Wow! It’s my first time knowing about them! How much does a ride in a jeepney or a tricycle cost? M: A ride with a jeepney costs around 8 Philippine Pesos per 4 kms, while 1 km with a tricycle costs 10 Philippine Pesos. How far do you think you could go with 100 yen? W: Come on, Sky. You know that I hate math, right? M: Well, you can ride about 4 kms in a tricycle for 100 yen. That’s not bad. And, in a jeepney, you can ride for about 20 kms for 100 yen! W: Wow! Twenty kms for 100 yen? That’s cheap! I can go to different places as much as I want! Oh Sky, look! What’s that man selling? I guess it’s food? M: It’s dirty ice cream! W: I LOVE ice cream! Hey, wait... What?! DIRTY ice cream? Who would want “dirty” ice cream? M: No Satomi! It’s clean ice cream but its name is “dirty ice cream.” I think it’s named that because you can only buy it on the streets. A guy goes around the town with his “dirty ice cream” cart while ringing his bell. W: Hey, those dirty ice cream carts are pretty cute! M: Exactly! Um… which flavor would you like? Coconut cream? Mango and nuts? Ube (which is a kind of potato) and cheese? or Banana Caramel? W: Oh my, oh my. Unique ice cream flavors, mostly coming from fruits! I’d like to try… them all! Which do you think is the best? M: Hmm… let’s ask the ice cream man! M: (a quick pause) Sorry, Satomi! Only one flavor was available. The others were already sold out! W: Which flavor was available? Today on the podcast, I will talk about one of my favorite apps but first, here is a little tech news for you. Tech News: Neutrogena's iPhone 'SkinScanner' Analyzes Pores, Moisture, Wrinkles https://www.pcmag.com/news/358329/neutrogenas-iphone-skinscanner-analyzes-pores-moisture “Neutrogena unveiled a new device called SkinScanner, which attaches to your iPhone and uses 12 LED lights, sensors, and a 30x magnification lens to analyze the health of your skin. The device, created in partnership with a startup called FitSkin, works in conjunction with a new app called Skin360. Together, the Skin360 app and SkinScanner device can "give users an in-depth understanding of their skin's condition and needs, customized advice to address those needs, plus a clear way to track and assess skin's progress over time," App: Waze Navigation & Live Traffic By Waze Inc Waze is available for iPhone and Android phone Waze is a navigation/GPS and traffic app. It uses crowd sourcing to distribute real time traffic data. This means that other drivers report wrecks, construction and other traffic issues. The apps will map your drive based on the fasted route at that exact moment. While driving on the route, the app will continue to check for shorter and faster routes. This app can save you much time and frustration. While using the app, you can also provide information about traffic issues you witness for other users. Tech Tip: Clearing the Cache Android: https://www.techspot.com/article/1407-android-performance-tweaks/ Most experts recommend that you keep 10-15 percent of your phone’s storage available at all times. Even if you have plenty of storage on your phone, you can improve the performance by removing junk and unused apps. To free up space, delete apps you do not use. This movie was all start from a young activist wizard from England. A: Holding a mysterious leather suitcase in his hand, Newt Scamander, , visits New York while he is on his way to Arizona. Inside his expanding suitcase hides a wide array of diverse, magical creatures that exist among us, ranging from tiny, twig-like ones, to majestic and humongous ones. M: At the same time, by a twist of fate, Newt's precious suitcase will be switched with the identical one of an aspiring No-Maj baker, Jacob Kowalski, while demoted Auror, Tina Goldstein, arrests Newt for being an unregistered wizard.H: To make matters worse, with the suitcase in the wrong hands, several creatures manage to escape to unknown directions. Before long, this situation will catch Senior Auror Percival Graves' attention who will target both Tina and Newt amid panic caused by an invisible.M: Is there a hidden agenda behind Graves' intentions and ultimately, what will happen to the remaining magical creatures still loose in the streets? You must go to the cinema and watch it! Trust me, you won't be disappointed!F: Although I cannot see the actors and actresses that we are familiar with in Harry Potter in this film, it still attracts me. Because the leading role is played by Eddie Redmayne. I like him very much for his handsomeness and talent.B: Me too, and he has a nickname, little freckle. I first got to know him in the musical film, Les Miserables, in which he played a young man who comes of noble stock but dedicated in revolution. F: He also played Stephen Hawking in the biographical drama film The Theory of Everything and he won an Oscar for Best Actor. As such, he became the first man born in the 1980s to win an acting Oscar.H: What's more, Ezra Miller, who played Credence, is a young as well as talented actor and is one of my favorite actors. In 2012, he acted as a handsome gay in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I was attracted by his beautiful appearance first, but soon I discovered his excellent performing.F: Colin Farrell, who played Graves, is also a handsome actor. He played the leading role in the famous film, Miami Vice, with Li Gong and Jamie Foxx.H: Oh, how could I forget to mention, Johnny Depp also participated. He acted as Grindelwald.
