Jason and Rachel review The Dink on Apple TV, a pickleball comedy that somehow seems to hate pickleball. We get into why the movie isn't very funny, why the pickleball makes no sense, why the cast deserved better, how Andy Roddick and John McEnroe are wasted, why the “dink off” ending is painful, and how a Hallmark movie called Pickleball Christmas somehow did this premise better. Plus: spoon mics in a backyard, Jake Johnson, Ed Harris, Mary Steenburgen, Ben Stiller's gross doctor scene, fake pickleball extras, grunting, May-December weirdness, and the eternal question: who is this movie actually for? Sean Clements is a writer for the big and small screen. His latest project is a feature film called The Dink. It's a movie about pickleball starring Mary Steenburgen and Jake Johnson. The movie was inspired by some of Sean's experiences with the sport – which he was very skeptical about at first as a pretty serious tennis player. We also get into his work as co-host of the comedy podcast Hollywood Handbook and what it's like to make celebrities uncomfortable on that show. This week Andrew and Ted discuss the Apple TV original comedy "The Dink" starring Jake Johnson and Mary Steenburgen ... co-starring Ed Harris, Aaron Chen, Lynne Marie, and Cleo King. When a private tennis club finds it's core is being threatened by pickleball the club president (Harris), turns to obscure "duel challenge" in the club bi-laws to send the pickleball players packing. The club hosts a tennis tournament to find out who will represent the club side in the duel. Dustin (Johnson), who happens to be the son of the club president and former Junior Tennis phenom, ultimately wins the club championship and assumes that he will represent the club. His attitude changes after he injures himself and is prescribed pickleball as his physical therapy. There he falls in love with not only the game but with his partner Candace (Steenburgen) who is a number of years his senior. When it comes time for the duel the club pulls a last minute audible and subs Dustin with professional tennis player Andy Roddick. Dustin then takes over for the pickleball side of things and uses a forgotten rule to choose the game so instead of tennis Roddick and Dustin face off in a pickleball match. John McEnroe provides color analysis for the match from the stand as a spectator.

It is arguably the biggest blockbuster of the summer - Spiderman: Brand New Day starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and the usual cast of Marvel characters! Also Apple TV+ movie ‘The Dink' starring Jake Johnson, Mary Steenburgen, Ed Harris and Ben Stiller.
The Dink is pickleball's very funny new entry into the classic genre of sports comedies. In the new film, Jake Johnson stars as a washed-up tennis underachiever whose loyalties become divided after befriending a pickleball player played by Mary Steenburgen. It's got a contest with huge stakes and a surprising dose of heart, and the jokes make it over the net. In a week where Hollywood studios have cleared the deck in the wake of The Odyssey, Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy still have a bunch of reviews for you. They revisit one of the year's best protest documentaries from Sundance (Everybody to Kenmure Street). Steve talks about seeing the musical on stage that was filmed for cinema (Hadestown: The Musical). Yorgos Lanthimos' co-writer crafts another quirky, unpleasant family (Rosebush Pruning) and Nicolas Winding Refn delivers a tale of fathers, daughters and a serial killer (Her Private Hell). Kevin Hart joins a Gen-Z bachelor party weekend (72 Hours) while Jake Johnson plays pickleball to save his family club (The Dink). Reacher's Alan Ritchson seeks revenge of both the deadly and silent type (Motor City). Finally, Sundance isn't the only revisitation this week.
