The new life cycle of a brand ‘cancellation'

In an era where a brand's reputation is tethered to the relentless cycles of social media, silence is no longer a defensive strategy for brands and can even become a liability. In this episode of the Modern Retail Podcast, senior reporter Gabi Barkho is joined by crisis PR consultant Sam Gauchier to break down why the old-school public relations tactic of trying to sweep a major scandal under the rug is increasingly failing major brands. The latest example came this week, when Target quickly scrambled to do damage control after one of its children's Halloween costumes was called out for its depiction of blackface. Neutrogena is also facing backlash in the wake of former ambassador Hayden Panettiere's death, with many scrutinizing the brand's 2015 decision to sever ties with Panettiere after she discussed her postpartum depression experience. The criticism continued even after Neutrogena issued an apology. This week's podcast episode digs into: Whether "canceling" a brand is actually possible today. Why there is more pressure on brands to address consumer criticism head on.  Whether boycotts can hurt businesses in the long run.

On this Friday, on what would’ve been Hayden Panetierre’s 37th birthday, statements are flying and fingers are pointing surrounding the untimely death of the young actress. Panetierre’s abusive on-again-off-again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson released a statement via his attorney pointing out there were no signs of foul play, but acknowledged her death remains under investigation. Meantime, her mother continued to defect any blame about her role in her “estranged” daughter’s death by continuing to point the finger at Hickerson. This comes as several celebrities went public with their feelings towards Hayden’s mom, along with a public apology of sorts from Neutrogena, which has come under fire for its decision to end a decade-long relationship with Hayden following her public acknowledgment she was suffering from postpartum depression. Hayden Panettiere, who appeared in more than 50 commercials by age five before starring in Heroes and Nashville, was found unresponsive at 36 in a Greenville, South Carolina apartment on Sunday, August 16th, where her on again off again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach were both present when a 911 call reported cardiac arrest and a possible overdose. Hayden had been on a press tour for her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, detailing a decade long, documented abusive relationship with Brian Hickerson, who pled no contest to two felony domestic violence charges, and the moment Neutrogena allegedly invoked a morality clause after she opened up about postpartum depression on the Kelly and Michael Show. The story also reaches back to her engagement to Wladimir Klitschko and their daughter Kaya, and a surprising parallel Chalene draws to the Lindsay Clancy postpartum psychosis trial. Topics discussed: Hayden Panettiere, Brian Hickerson, Zach Hickerson, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Jennette McCurdy, I'm Glad My Mom Died, Jay Shetty, On Purpose, Gayle King, Neutrogena, Michael Strahan, Wladimir Klitschko, Kaya, Lindsay Clancy, Andrea Yates, Lori Vallow, Susan Smith, Casey Anthony, TMZ, Matthew Perry.   Join Chalene on Patreon her private podcast to hear all the latest on the Penthouse Drama and upcoming episode Session with a Renowned Pet Psychic

Her father remains in the Grooming Hall of Fame. Actress Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36. Her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, is under a lot of fire today. She completely screwed over an Airbnb homeowner. Hayden spilled all (with vocal fry) all her trauma on Jay Shetty's On Purpose podcast. Most sustainability communicators don't have the title, the budget, or the C-suite access to force anyone to do anything. So how do they get things done? That's the question at the center of this conversation with Aman Singh, Director of Global ESG and Sustainability Communications at Kenvue—the company behind Tylenol, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Listerine, and a long list of other household names. Aman has spent her career figuring out how to move organizations from the inside—at Walmart, at Edelman, and now at Kenvue—and her answer isn't what most people expect. It's not about better data, sharper messaging, or more compelling reports. It's about relationships, timing, and learning to speak other people's language before you ask them to speak yours. In this episode, we get into what "influencing without authority" actually looks like in practice, why the old volume-equals-visibility playbook is finished, how to navigate the current era of greenhushing without hiding in fear, and what makes sustainability communicators effective versus annoying. We also talk about our shared career paths—journalism, agencies, consulting—and what it really means to build a purposeful career in a field that didn't exist when most of us started. If sustainability communication is your full-time job or your side hustle, this one's for you. Reuben Carranza knows a good brand when he sees it.  Bansk Beauty, where he serves as executive chairman, made headlines in September after acquiring the buzzy, clinical skin-care brand Byoma. It's part of the late-stage private investment firm's growing beauty roster, which includes Amika, Eva NYC and Ethique.  “No. 1, they're on a tear, right? They're growing rapidly. But I think what we loved about them was the story,” he told Glossy on stage at this week's annual Glossy Beauty and Wellness Summit about its Byoma acquisition. “It's the story: they've de-complicated complicated skin-care routines.”  Carranza kicked off the Summit with a special live podcast recording, where he shared insights into the firm's investment philosophy and growth plans for its brands. He also shared career advice from his stacked CV, which includes more than two decades at P&G and leadership roles at R+Co Hair, Kate Somerville skin care, and more.  This special session is ahead, but first, hosts Lexy Lebsack and Emily Jensen share highlights from the Summit and dig into the news of the week.  First up, the hosts break down the latest from Tylenol- and Neutrogena-owner Kenvue. Kimberly-Clark Corp. will acquire Kenvue Inc. in a deal valued at $48.7 billion. Kimberly-Clark's portfolio includes consumer brands like Huggies, Kleenex and Cottonelle. Next up, a look at Skims's buzzy new hire. Diarrha N'Diaye was named evp, beauty and fragrance of Kim Kardashian's upcoming Skims Beauty. N'Diaye has worked in marketing and branding for the likes of Glossier and L'Oréal, and was most recently the founder of Ami Colé, which shuttered in July. She will lead product development, innovation and brand strategy for Skims's upcoming beauty launch.  Finally, an analysis of a hefty investment in Blueprint, the supplement company from American entrepreneur and biohacker Bryan Johnson. The company has taken on $60 million in funding from investors like Kim Kardashian, Ari Emanuel, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, and many more big names. Johnson is best known for documenting his quest to age in reverse on YouTube and through the Netflix film “Don't Die.” Blueprint currently offers a variety of products DTC, including drink mixes, supplements and skin care.

"It's not enough to think confident — you have to show it. The inner work matters, but so does the outer energy you project into the world." — Kimmy Seltzer In this episode, Kristen M. Olson sits down with Kimmy Seltzer — a therapist-turned-dating-strategist and host of The Charisma Quotient podcast — to dissect modern love in the age of apps, filters, and fast connections. They explore: Kimmy's journey from therapist to style-confidence coach and media personality. Her signature outside-in method for building confidence and attraction. The connection between appearance, energy, and emotional readiness. What reality dating shows like Love Is Blind Denver and The Golden Bachelor reveal about our obsession with instant chemistry. Why rushing the dating process sabotages long-term connection — and how to start "data-dating" instead of "blind-dating." How to reframe being single as a period of self-alignment, not self-fixing. Key Takeaway: Confidence is a skill built both internally and externally — when you align your energy, mindset, and presentation, you attract from authenticity, not fear.
