Charlie joins Caitlin to cover 2018's Calibre - a movie without a monstrous feminine theme, but one worth talking about nonetheless. We talk about themes of friendship, guilt, paranoia, and justice, and we praise the movie for its cinematography and acting. Tangents include: iPhone face, accents, Scotland, colonoscopies, smoking, firearms, hunting, movies that make us cry, themes that make us cry, fake crying, cereals, and pastries. Weigh in on the great muffin debate, and also let me know what you'd like to see out of upcoming episode 200!
Tune in as Arthur's pal Robyn Zabukovec pops back up on 2CC for a discussion on Shallow Grave, the 1994 thriller that follows an obnoxious trio of British flatmates who descend into paranoia after dealing with the corpse and the big bag of money that have fallen into their laps. The black comedy that this film manages to smoothly blend in with its suspense, appreciation for onscreen blood that avoids looking too fake, the time when the cops had caught Robyn jaywalking through a blizzard, and whether it's less painful to die from the heat or from the cold comprise just some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Danny Boyle, Shallow Grave stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston, Kerry Fox, Keith Allen, Ken Stott, Colin McCredie, Peter Mullan, Leonard O'Malley, Tony Curran, and John Hodge. Q&A on the series Mary & George with actor Tony Curran, creator and executive producer D.C. Moore, executive producer Liza Marshall, and executive producer & director of episodes 1-3 Oliver Hermanus. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. The Countess of Buckingham who molded her son to seduce King James I and become his all-powerful lover, through intrigue, becoming richer, more titled and influential than England has ever seen.

Forster Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is Editor-at-Large of the London Review of Books and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His previous novel, Mayflies, won huge acclaim, was a Waterstones Scottish Book of the Month and was adapted for television in an award-winning two-part BBC drama starring Martin Compston and Tony Curran. Rollistan: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Ron Perlman, Leonor Varela, Norman Reedus, Thomas Kretschmann, Luke Goss, Matt Schulze, Donnie Yen, Karel Roden, Tony Curran, Marit Velle Kile, Danny John-Jules, Santiago Segura Superlänk med alla våra plattformar: Filmsmakarna #Blade2 #WesleySnipes #ronpearlman #blade #filmsmakarna
We're back in the dark reaches of a pessimistic and aggressive portrayal of the world's "most beautiful place": Scotland. In Ryan's words, it can be a terrifying place. Andrea Arnold's slice of Cinema Verité inspired by the Dogme 95 aesthetic and film movement, really puts you in a scary place that is equally horrifying and mesmerizing. As a counterpoint to the last film we covered, this is also a film about watching people, innocently enough through the eyes of a CCTV operator, but how, through this character's trauma, how that power is easily manipulated for her personal gain. This is a fascinating piece of cinema and one of the strongest debuts from a first-time director. Enjoy this incredibly dark and uncompromising film at your own peril but you won't be disappointed.

He is crushed when, instead of giving him his big break, gallery owner Susan criticizes him for not taking enough risks. Emboldened, he heads into the city's subway system at night, where he takes pictures of an impending sexual assault before saving the woman. The next day, he discovers she has gone missing. Intrigued, he investigates reports of similar disappearances. His investigation leads him to a butcher named Mahogany, who he suspects has been killing subway passengers for the past three years. Leon presents his photos to the police, but Detective Hadley disbelieves him. Leon's involvement quickly turns into a dark obsession, upsetting his girlfriend Maya, who is also disbelieving of his story. Leon follows Mahogany onto the last subway train of the night, only to witness a bloodbath. The butcher kills several passengers and hangs their bodies on meat hooks. After a brief scuffle with Mahogany, Leon passes out on the train. He awakes the next morning in a slaughterhouse with strange markings carved into his chest. A concerned Maya and her friend Jurgis examine Leon's photos of Mahogany, leading them to the killer's apartment. After breaking in, Jurgis is captured, though Maya escapes with timetables that record over a hundred years of murders on the subway. She goes to the police but finds Hadley still skeptical. When Hadley presses Maya to return the timetables, she demands answers. At gunpoint, Hadley directs her to take the midnight train to find Jurgis. Leon heads to a hidden subway entrance in the slaughterhouse, arming himself with several knives. He boards the train as Mahogany completes his nightly massacre and corners Maya. Leon attacks the murderer with a knife, and the two fight in between the swinging human flesh. Human body parts are ripped, thrown, and used as weapons. Jurgis, hung from a meat hook, dies when he is gutted. The train reaches its final stop, a cavernous abandoned station filled with skulls and decomposing bodies. The conductor appears, advising Leon and Maya to "step away from the meat." The true purpose of the abandoned station is revealed, as reptilian creatures enter the car and consume the bodies of the murdered passengers. Leon and Maya flee into the cavern. Mahogany, battered, fights to the death with Leon. After Leon stabs a broken femur through his throat, Mahogany only grins in his dying throes, saying, "Welcome!" The conductor tells Leon the creatures have lived beneath the city long before the subway was constructed, and the butcher's job is to feed them each night to keep them from attacking subway riders during the day. He picks up Leon and, with the same supernatural strength as the deceased butcher, rips out Leon's tongue and eats it. The conductor brings Leon's attention to Maya, who has been knocked unconscious and is lying on a pile of bones. The conductor forces Leon to watch as he cuts Maya's chest open to remove her heart. He says that, having killed the butcher, Leon must take his place. Detective Hadley hands the train schedule to the new butcher, who wears a ring with the symbol of the group that feeds the creatures. The killer walks onto the midnight train and reveals himself as Leon. Top Five Trivia of the movie: Top 5 Trivia-Lionsgate had recently hired executive Joseph Drake when the film was completing production. Drake greatly disliked the film, and decided to give it a limited theatrical run in budget cinemas.-Vinnie Jones and Bradley Cooper were born exactly ten years apart on January 5th. Vinnie in 1965, and Bradley in 1975.-The necklace that Detective Hadley (Barbara Eve Harris) wears has the same symbol as Mahogany's (Vinnie Jones') ring.-This is the second movie in which Vinnie Jones remains silent until the final few minutes of the film, the first being Gone in 60 Seconds (2000).-The ancients' immortality is ensured by the human flesh (they are themselves degenerate humans), and said immortality is needed for them to continually serve the Eldritch Abomination they made a deal with so New York would prosper. It's also implied that similar deals were brokered with similar abominations at the site of every major city in the world. Even yours. it's also implied that all myths of Gods, ever, including the Abrahamic deity, are sanitized accounts of these abominations. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. We talk about Blade II and the things you missed if you don't read the comics. Hear about Whistler, Norman Reedus, Donnie Yen, Matt Schulze, Tony Curran, and more! Talk with us on Twitter and Reddit. Links from the discussion… Blade is the only character in this movie from the 616 universe. Not even the reapers are from the comics. Novak was based on Morbius, because why not? Probably the coolest thing about this movie is that it was directed by Guillermo del Toro. NEWS YOU CAN ABUSE! The only thing worth talking about that we haven't talked about.

Chaos Walking is adapted from a novel by author Patrick Ness and has all the ingredients for a real gem- great, young cast, solid director well versed in action and narrative line, and bigger budget. Still, a subpar film with promise early on and undelivered fulfillment on those promises. Though- one thing does have to be said for Chaos Walking- It's releases in theaters when few others are, a fact that is very relevant in the middle of a pandemic. Megastar Tom Holland and should be megastar but isn't Daisey Ridley take the leads in the dystopian Sci-Fi adventure where people can hear each other's thoughts in different forms of sound called "Noise" and there are no women. Should be interesting, but it isn't. (3/10) Cherry (Apple) The latest Apple Original film is Cherry- A film about the journey of a young man from early adulthood (college) to the Army as a medic post 9/11, to back home where he has a wife and house waiting for him, to the pits of his own despair in the form of drug addiction ruining the life of those around him to robbing banks and then to an eventual incarceration and a pretty great mustache in the last few moments of the story. It's a ride for sure. Hopefully, you took it. It's worth it. Tom Holland is Cherry- a young man who goes through the above journey. It's broken out into several different parts and an epilogue that is very pleasing to watch and an impressive montage to boot. It's not an easy watch not is it fun, but very satisfying. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Back in 2018, a low budget thriller CALIBRE picked up by Netflix premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival where it received positive buzz. Not surprising the picture was a Scottish production giving the premiere a very local experience. Shortly after Netflix released it to their VOD platform, it disappeared into their vast catalog of movies and shows. But some people came upon it and soon word-of-mouth gave it some regard. Marcus, a successful businessman, takes his old friend Vaughn out hunting in the moors of Scotland. Vaughn has a quandary. His fiancée is newly pregnant and he is beginning to worry whether he will be a good father. Arriving at their destination, the two find out that the local townsfolk look upon them as troublemakers. The next morning they head out to hunt deer only to land up in a predicament neither ever thought was possible. CALIBRE was a lucky pick by one of Dark Discussions Patreon supporters. Written and directed by newcomer Matt Palmer, the movie has received fantastic reviews. With its strong cast of Jack Lowden, Martin McCann, and Tony Curran, the movie’s acting makes the film appear to be a much bigger production. You co-hosts take a look at this little film and give their thoughts. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Susan Wokoma – British actress and writer Susan Wokoma is one of the most brilliant and interesting young actors working today. Having already established a diverse and award winning body of work in her short career. In January, Susan reprised the role of eccentric ‘Cynthia’ in the second series of BAFTA Award winning Chewing Gum for Channel 4. The first series of Chewing Gum, a British television sitcom series set in London, debuted on E4 in October 2015. Written by and starring Michaela Coel, Robert Lonsdale, Danielle Walters and Tanya Franks, the show centers on Beyoncé obsessed ‘Tracey Gordon’, a religious, 24-year-old shop assistant, who wants to and learn more about the world. In October last year, Susan starred in six-part comedic horror series Crazyhead, a new series from Misfits creator Howard Overman. The dark comedy, developed by Urban Myth Films for Channel 4 in association with Netflix, is a funny and gripping programme about friendship, love and facing your demons. It follows an unlikely duo of demon hunters – Susan played ‘Raquel’, opposite Cara Theobold, a self-made demon hunter with a whole lot of baggage and an impressive lack of social skills. The cast also includes Riann Steele, Lewis, Arinze Kene and Tony Curran, and Crazy Face was broadcast on E4 in the UK and was launched on Netflix globally in December. Also in October, Susan appeared as ‘Megan’, alongside a fantastic young British cast, including Laura Carmichael, Chloe Pirrie, Jack Farthing and Joe Dempsie, in the melancholic comedy Burn Burn Burn. The independent feature was director Chanya Button’s debut and follows two best friends as they travel across the U.K spreading the ashes of their recently deceased friend. The feature was nominated for the ‘Raindance’ Award at The British Independent Film Awards and was nominated in the category of ‘Best Film’ at the London Film Festival, both in 2015, and won awards from the LOCO Film Festival, Cinema City, Odessa International Film Festival and Umberside Cinema ahead of its UK theatrical release on 28th October. The feature was distributed globally by Netflix later in November. In April 2014, Susan made her film debut as ‘Amala’ and alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose and John Boyega, in Biyi Bandele’s adaptation of Half of a Yellow Sun. The feature, based on the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi, tells the tale of two sisters after they return to Nigeria right before outbreak of the 1960 Nigerian Civil War. In August 2014, Susan took on the role of ‘Della’ in The Inbetweeners 2, the box office friendly sequel of 2011 hit film, The Inbetweeners Movie. Set in Australia, the British comedy revisits the four main characters from the original as they travel to Australia for the ultimate lads’ holiday. The film became the highest grossing British film in the UK in 2014. In 2006, Susan made her feature film debut as ‘Marie’ in the BAFTA Award-winning fictionalized documentary, That Summer Day. The special follows the lives of six school children on the day of the 7/7 London bombings in 2005. Using archived news footage, the programme was created in response to concerns about how London’s children were coping with the events of that day. The programme aired on BBC Two one year later. Susan’s other on-screen credits include ‘Jess Manning’ in the 2015 BAFTA Craft nominated BBC film The Last Hours of Laura K; ‘Lance ‘Corporal Jasmine Jaspers’ in the third season of the BBC Three’s TV series Bluestone 42 in 2015 and, a role in the TV series Uncle, also on BBC Three in the same year. She also played ‘Jessica’ in Crashing, Channel 4’s six-part British comedy, broadcast in January 2016; ‘Doctor Sensible’ in ITV’s Horrible Science; ‘Daisy’ in Hotel Trubble (2011), and ‘Roz’ in Howard Overman’s cult hit series Misfits (2013). Her theatre work includes productions at the Royal Court, Bush Theatre, Almeida, and The Royal National Theatre. Susan also joined the New York transfers of Phyllida Lloyd’s all female Donmar Warehouse productions of Henry IV and Julius Caesar at St. Ann’s Warehouse in 2014. Susan is currently involved in developing new comedies with Objective, 2LE Media and Lucky Giant, and also writing her own comedy series Fix You as a writer/performer with Cave Bear Productions. In 2016, Susan won Best Supporting Actor at the BBC Audio Drama Awards for her performance in the radio adaptation of Marie NDiaye’s Three Strong Women. She was a member of The National Youth Theatre as a teenager before going on to train at RADA.

PLUS: The gang bids a fond, if temporary, farewell to one of their own. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen stars Sean Connery, Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng, and Richard Roxburgh; directed by Stephen Norrington.
