How on earth did you find a place like that?M: I just found it online. W:Great.Text 10M:Hello, I'm Jeff Anderson from Coventry, England. And in today's program, I'd like to share with you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During the football season, whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and Newcastle are hung outside every window or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark packed pubs, staring at television screens. Of course, they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a goal or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the excitement, as far as victories are concerned.England had its big moment in 1966 in Wimbledon Stadium. The World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match, red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope — the English flag. While football has never been something I'm particularly interested in. For years, I've had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You cannot say you don't like or do not follow football in England, as often this will lead to a long dialogue in which someone will begin telling you why you should support their team.

I also invited Mary, but she is out of town.M:What a pity! I was hoping she would come.(Text 2)M: If I were you, I'd just walk to work. It would take you about 20 minutes. Riding a bike is a good choice, too.W: I agree. But this week my husband is away on business, so I have to drive my kids to school before I go to work. I'm pressed for time, you know.(Text 3)W:It's 8:30, Dave, and you're going to be late for the meeting.M:Oh, my! I just have half an hour left. I can't believe I slept for 10 hours.(Text 4)M:Hi, Helen. Where are you off to?W: To the library. I've got a history paper due next week, and need to do some reading.(Text 5)W:Thank goodness! You're still here.M:What's up?W: I need your signature for this document. It's urgent.(Text 6)W:Are you all alone, Tom? Why not ask Mike to help you collect money for the Children's Centre?M:Well, he's working on his lab report. Could you come?W:I'd love to, but I won't be available until next week. I think Cathy will have some free time this week. Do you want me to pass on a message?M:That'd be nice. Thanks, Jane.(Text 7)W:Are you leaving for the railway station now, Jack? It's so early.M:Just avoiding the rush hour traffic. I don't want to be late.W: So you have to wait for about two hours? I don't think there's scenery to look at.M:Don't worry! I'll take a book with me.W:It's too noisy to read in the railway station. I would usually look around the shops while waiting for the train.M:But I've already got all the gifts for my parents and sisters. I don't need to buy anything. If I really can't focus on the book, I may phone up some friends I haven't talked to in a while.W:That's a nice idea. Betty told me last time that she often spent the waiting time writing a to-do list so that she'd not miss anything in the days to come.M:That's an awesome idea. I'll surely do that. Thank you, Judy. See you next year.W:Bye!(Text 8)W:Hi, Bill. You look troubled. What's the matter?M:Hi, Grace. I have a big decision to make. My uncle offered me a job as the lead engineer at his service station, and with good pay.W:That's wonderful, but are you going to quit college?M:That's exactly the problem. One side of me says, “Oh, go ahead! You can go back to collegeanytime. What job could you get after college that would pay you $15 an hour? That's $30,000 a year!”W:And then?M:And then, the other side says, “Hold it, not so fast! For all those years you were in the army, you planned to go to college so that you would have many job possibilities to choose from. You've planned your whole life around going to college. And now…”W: I can see it. It's true that with your experience in the army, you could do excellent work repairing cars if you accept the job. But you are doing very well now. Just think of the future. You will get better jobs.(Text 9)W:Hey, John. Can I talk to you for a minute?M:Sure, what's up?W: I wanted to let you know about a book club I joined a few months ago. I know you do a lot of reading, so I thought you might want to come with me next month.M:Oh, that sounds like fun. When does the group meet?W:Usually the last Saturday of the month at 7:30 in the evening. Is that too late for you?M:No, I think that's okay. What do you talk about in the group?W:Well, every month we choose a new book. And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.M:What books have you read?W:Quite a lot. Recently we have read The Beautiful Mind and The Great Gatsby. Now we are reading The Kite Runner.M:The Kite Runner ? I've heard that's a good book. What's it about?W:It's about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s.M:That sounds interesting. I'd love to come.W:Great! The next meeting will be held in two weeks, so you still have time to read the book.(Text 10)W:Today, let's begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future.I'd like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75% listening and only 25% writing, so don't try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out. Here are some examples.

What's on?M: It's a science program on the origin of the universe. I'll give a presentation on it in my class tomorrow.(Text2)M: Hello, do you have The Best of Mozart?W: Um, sorry, we've just sold out. But we can order one for you. If you give us your number, we'll call you when the CD arrives.(Text3)W: We'd better be going now, or we'll be late for the train.M: No rush. It's 8:30 now. We still have two hours.(Text4)M: I am so tired of driving all those hours to work.W: Yeah, I know what you mean. I used to drive two hours to work each way. But now I live within walking distance of my office. I don't even need a bike.(Text5)W: Hi, Andy! I didn't see you in Prof. Smith's class yesterday. What happened?M: Well... I had a headache, so I called him and asked for sick leave.(Text6)W: The biggest mistake I made,uh, was leaving college in my last year and not completing my education. So I'm thinking of going back to school.M: School? To study what?W: Ecology. I'm interested in the relationship between humans and nature.M: Cool. Is it what you studied years ago?W: No, I majored in Chemistry then.(Text7)M: Good morning, madam. I am your guide for this trip.W: How lovely! Could you tell me about the hotel I'm going to stay at?M: Yes, of course! The Grand Hotel opened in 1990, and it sits on the seaside along the South Coast Highway. It is the most beautiful hotel here.W: That sounds great!M: And there are some restaurants outside, so at dinnertime, you'd have a lot of choices.W: That's really nice! I like to have some local foods while traveling. What about the scenery around it?M: The hotel has the best views of the Pacific Ocean.W: Oh, I think I will love this hotel.(Text8)W: Hi Mike!M: Hi Alice! Nice to see you. You don't often come here.W: I usually have fast food delivered to my office. Just came here for a change today.M: The environment here is good, clean and relatively quiet.W: Yeah, and I heard the food is tasty. By the way, are you going to the concert tomorrow evening?M: Yes. Are you?W: Yeah. Catherine was supposed to go with me but she may have to work extra hours tomorrow. Do you know anyone who might like to go?M: No... But if you like, I can ask around... Er... Joan might want to go.W: Oh, yes, she's a great fan of classical music. I'll give her a ring after lunch.(Text9)W: Hi, I've only just arrived!M: Oh, good. Now, here are the keys. Let's go in. There are two apartments. The one for rent is on the right.Do come in.W: Thank you. I like the carpet. The color is nice, isn't it?M: Yes, and this apartment is in good condition. Here is your lounge.W: Where would we eat?M: There is this corner here or you can use your kitchen. Come and see.W: The kitchen is quite small.M: Yes, but it has everything, cooker, fridge, even a dishwasher.W: And there are lots of cupboards.M: Let me show you the bedrooms. This is the smaller one.W: It's a good size though.M: Now come into the other bedroom. You can see the bathroom, too.W: Yes. It's very nice but I will have to ask my friend first and we will come together. I understand it is eight hundred dollars a month.M: Yes. But a few blocks downtown would be much more expensive.W: Well, thank you. I will be in touch.(Text10)M: Thank you very much. Thank you, Dr. Johnson. Well, it is really great to be back at university again. The thing that I wanted to tell you today is this: Education is important. When I came to the U.S., I was only thinking about being a carpenter. But I could not read the newspaper, and I could not understand the news on television or movies or anything like this. So I entered the City College to take English classes for foreign students. I was very proud that I was going to a college, because no one in my family ever went to any college or to any university. You know, when you're 15 years old in my country, you finish school and then learn a trade, and that's exactly what I did. When I was 15 years old, I learned how to be a carpenter. A year later I came to America. Luckily, I met a very good teacher who encouraged me to take some math classes, business classes, and history classes, and I became a full-time college student. And today, when I look back, I'm so happy because you never know where life will take you. All of a sudden I started making money because I was really good at math. You know, how to work out everything with math is so important. This is something that I learned when I started my own business, which is doing really well.

But you saw it disturbed the rest of the class.M: Yes, I realized that. I won't let it happen again.Text 4W: Hi, Mike. Listen, I'm coming back this afternoon, and I'll take a bus from the railway station. So, you don't need to come and pick me up.M: OK, take care, and see you soon.Text 5M: Jenny, there's an opening for an assistant manager in our company. You should give it a try.W: Thank you, George, but I've decided to travel a bit before finding another job.Text 6M: By the way, do you know what time it is?W: Well, it's a quarter to two.M: Oh, I've got to go.W: See Linda in the library?M: No. Actually, I'm going to meet with Professor Smith at ten past two. Some of you may have heard of him before. He's an artist. So Chris, tell us a bit about yourself.M: Well, I was born in Springfield, Missouri, and grew up in Kansas. I'll never find another apartment like it around here. But I don't like the idea of paying three months for an empty apartment, either. He is coming here to do some research this summer, from June to August.W: Well, that's exactly when I'll be away!M: Tell you what: I'll be calling Jim late this week anyway, so I'll mention it to him.W: Well, thanks, Bill.Text 10W: I hope I've given you a clear idea of the schedule for your London weekend. And, before I finish, let me just give you some advice which should make your stay more enjoyable. Firstly, please do remember to put on some comfortable shoes. London is a big place, and whatever you do, you'll find yourself doing quite a lot of walking. So, comfortable shoes are really necessary. And secondly, let me ask you to please look after your money. Keep it safe at all times, and then you will not have any unpleasant accident, which could ruin your whole weekend. You'll find a copy of your weekend's schedule in your room. Take a look at it, and make sure you're clear about everything. Well, that's all from me for now. Go and leave your luggage in your rooms. I'll be seeing you here again in fifteen minutes. Goodbye for now!

Brane Senegačnik: Lirični prostor

Ocene

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 6, 2026 6:53

Piše Meta Kušar, bereta Eva Longyla Marušič in Jure Franko. Zaradi trenda.

May I see the wine list?M: Certainly. Here you are.Text 5M: We need to have some fresh air. Do you mind my opening the window?W: As a matter of fact, I'm feeling a bit cold. Text 6M: Guess what I'll be doing this summer?W: What?M: I'm going to work at the Riverside Hotel.W: What exactly will you be doing?M: Let's see. I'll be doing some small repairs inside and outside the hotel. I'll be cutting grass and taking care of the flowers.W: Sounds interesting. What's the pay?M: Well, uh…about fifteen dollars an hour, five hours a day, and Sunday free. W: That's good money. What are you going to do with it?M: I'll pay for the textbooks for next term.Text 7M: Hi, Sue. How's it going?W: Oh, hi, Frank, just fine. How are your classes?M: Pretty good. We have you arriving on the 16th of September and leaving the 24th of September — altogether, eight nights. Will there be anything else?W: Yes. Instead of a courtyard room, I'd like a room with a view, preferably on an upper floor. M: I can certainly change that for you, but there will be a change in the room rate. Then we're going boating on Saturday. And on Sunday, we're going to do some shopping. Then I will take some time to visit my aunt Lucy. M: You're not going to camp, are you? Isn't it a bit cold?W: No, we're not. It is a bit cold. We're staying in a country inn. It's not like five-star hotels or anything. But it's really comfortable.M: Hmm, sounds interesting. You know, it's the boating that I don't like.W: Well, what are you up to?M: Sit on my sofa all weekend and watch the DVDs I've just bought. And that will be a busy weekend. I may finish watching Friends.W: I don't know how you can do that all weekend, Gordon. I'd get bored.M: I know, I know. But that's really what I want to do. Text 10M: Hello. Welcome to the program. In America, May and June are the traditional months for graduations. A listener in China, Wang Ming, who is about to get an engineering degree, wants to know how American college graduates find jobs. Right now, the answer is: not very easily. A latest study on the college job market showed that employers wanted to hire 22% fewer graduates this year than last. The study also showed that just 20% of those who looked for jobs before graduation have found one by now. This is compared to half of students who had looked for a job by this time two years ago. But one difference: fewer of this year's graduates have started to search for jobs. Engineering graduates were more likely to have started their job search already, and to have accepted a job. This is among the best-paid professions for people with just a college degree. On average, engineering majors expect to start at about $62,000 a year.

Skutky apoštolov 4:32 Množstvo tých, čo uverili, bolo jedno srdce a duša a nikto nepokladal za svoje nič z toho, čo mu patrilo, ale všetko mali spoločné.33 Apoštoli s veľkou mocou vydávali svedectvo o zmŕtvychvstaní Pána Ježiša a na všetkých spočívala veľká milosť.34 Nikto totiž medzi nimi netrpel biedou, pretože všetci, čo mali polia a domy, ich predávali a čo za ne utŕžili, prinášali35 a kládli k nohám apoštolov a každý dostal podľa toho, koľko potreboval.36 Aj Jozef, ktorému apoštoli dali prímenie Barnabáš, čo v preklade znamená syn útechy, levita, rodák z Cypru,37 mal roľu, predal ju, priniesol peniaze a položil ich k nohám apoštolov.Skutky apoštolov 5:1 Istý muž menom Ananiáš, spolu s manželkou Zafirou, predali majetok. 2 S manželkiným vedomím si časť peňazí odložil a zvyšok priniesol a položil apoštolom k nohám. 3 No Peter mu povedal: Ananiáš! Prečo ti satan naplnil srdce, aby si klamal Duchu Svätému a odložil si si z peňazí za predané pole? 4 Nebolo vari tvoje, kým si ho mal? A keď si ho už predal, nemohol si s peniazmi zaň voľne nakladať? 5 Keď Ananiáš počul tieto slová, padol a naposledy vydýchol. A všetkých, čo to počuli, sa zmocnil veľký strach. 6 Nato mladší z nich vstali, zavinuli ho, vyniesli a pochovali. Keď mládenci vošli dnu, našli ju mŕtvu, vyniesli ju a pochovali k jej mužovi.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2026 7:57

Piše Tatjana Pregl Kobe, bereta Eva Longyka Marušič in Bernard Stramič. Pesniško zbirko Aleša Jelenka Socialna omrežja zaznamuje spajanje različnega in na prvi pogled nezdružljivega. Prevladujoč neoseben digitalni svet in iskanje intime, tišine, resnice. Prvoosebnega pripovedovalca razgradi do niča. Zbirko Socialna omrežja sestavljajo trije sklopi pesmi: Čipi in mikrokozmos, Bližina in njena odsotnost in Digitalizacija in robotizacija. Vsi naslovi pesmi so napisani z malo začetnico in so večinoma ključ do razumevanja vsebine. Tehnologije vrtoglavo napredujejo in so postale neločljiv del našega vsakdana. Pesmi v zbirki Kontejner so s poustvarjanjem njegovih pesmi postale nove, sveže, sodobne in se s samosvojo izreko znova ponujajo v branje prav v letošnjem, velikemu kraškemu poetu posvečenem letu.

Mala by vytvoriť najväčšiu zónu voľného obchodu na svete so 700 miliónmi spotrebiteľov. Úplne sa nám rozpadla výrobná vertikála, teda chýba spracovateľský priemysel.“ Štát by mal prísť s modernou koncepciou rozvoja a podpory poľnohospodárstva i spracovateľského priemyslu, aby celý výrobný reťazec dával zmysel a pridanú hodnotu. Kľúčové sú investície do moderných technológií a veľkovýroba. Bez toho bude slovenská poľnohospodárska produkcia naďalej stagnovať a celý agrosektor zostane zaseknutý v 90-tych rokoch. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

All the info is over at diabetes-connetionss.com events/ Okay.. our top story this week: XX   All UK children could be offered screening for type 1 diabetes using a simple finger-prick blood test, say researchers who have been running a large study. This is the ELSA study - Early Surveillance for Autoimmune diabetes, a first of its kind UK study. They tested blood samples from 17,931 children aged 3-13 for autoantibodies, markers of type 1 diabetes that can appear years before symptoms. Families of children found to have early-stage type 1 diabetes received tailored education and ongoing support to prepare for the eventual onset of type 1 diabetes symptoms and to ensure insulin therapy can begin promptly when needed, reducing the chances of needing emergency treatment. Those with one autoantibody also received ongoing support and monitoring.   Some families were also offered teplizumab, the first ever immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes, which can delay the need for insulin by around three years in people with early-stage type 1 diabetes. The second phase has launched and will expand screening to all children in the UK aged 2-17 years, with a focus on younger children (2-3 years) and older teenagers (14-17 years). The research team aims to recruit 30,000 additional children across these new age groups. ELSA 2 will assess how screening can be scaled across the NHS and evaluate its cost-effectiveness. https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/news/2026/childhood-type-1-diabetes-screening-is-effective-and-could-prevent-thousands-of-emergency-diagnoses XX At the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference Dexcom CEO Jake Leach says they're going to launch a new product outside the US. I'll link up that interview, The full quote: "When you look at the outside the U.S., there are a lot of structures that are tiered. Patients have access to different types of products, so we've got a new one that we want to introduce that will add flexibility there. It's based on the G7 platform, just like Dexcom ONE+, but it has a unique experience that's tailored for a subset of users that, today, don't have access to Dexcom." Your guess is as good as mine, but sounds more like a pricing or ordering issue than a new bit of hardware or software. Dexcom will also bring Stelo to some international markets this year. And plans a new mobile app experience for the wearable biosensor meant for people who don't dose insulin. Leach also says G8 will be much smaller and with more capability. but is a few years away. https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/dexcom-ceo-jake-leach-2026-roadmap-jpm/ XX A new international consensus statement provides guidance for the use of diabetes technology during pregnancy for women with type 1 diabetes (T1D), type 2 diabetes (T2D), or gestational diabetes (GD).   Organized by the diaTribe Foundation, the document was based on evidence where available, as well as opinion from an international group of experts in endocrinology, diabetes technology, and obstetrics & gynecology, among others.   This is the first set of recommendations specifically addressing the use of diabetes technology in pregnancy – and we'll link it up. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/new-consensus-statement-addresses-diabetes-tech-pregnancy-2026a100020d XX Bariatric surgery beats GLP-1s for type 2 diabetes across income levels. This study was published this month, looking at nearly 300 patients are 4 medical centers. Success here is measured by lower blood glucose levels, higher weight loss (28% vs. 10%), less use of diabetes medications, remission of diabetes to the point of no longer needing to inject insulin, and reduced risk factors for cardiovascular disease.     Bariatric surgery was better than medical therapy across all social backgrounds, they found, and not just in areas of higher deprivation. The ancillary study was smaller, and some of the participants randomized in earlier stages crossed over from medical to surgical treatment, and the reverse. The authors acknowledged and accounted for these limitations, along with the rapid development of more powerful obesity drugs not fully captured in the study. This was a long term study – more than 12 years – and by the end of the study more people were choosing GLP1 medications. One dividing line: If someone hopes to lose 100 pounds, that's more likely with surgery than with medications.  "Ultimately, we need large, long-term, well-designed studies to clarify the best strategy for a given patient." https://www.statnews.com/2026/01/19/diabetes-study-bariatric-surgery-better-than-glp-1s/ XX Researchers at the University of California, Riverside have reported for the first time that a father's exposure to microplastics (MPs) can lead to metabolic problems in his children, including diabetes. This is a mouse study, but it looks at a previously unrecognized way in which environmental pollution may influence the health of future generations. MPs are extremely small plastic fragments, measuring less than 5 millimeters, that form as consumer products and industrial materials break down. Metabolic disorders describe a group of conditions that include elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, and excess body fat, all of which raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes. The team found that female offspring of male mice exposed to MPs were far more prone to metabolic disorders than offspring of unexposed fathers, even though all offspring received the same high fat diet.     The research team hopes the findings will guide future investigation into how MPs and even smaller nanoplastics affect human development.   https://scitechdaily.com/microplastics-can-rewire-sperm-triggering-diabetes-in-the-next-generation/ XX The FDA has finalized four new recalls for certain lots of Abbott's FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors due to ongoing safety concerns. We told you about this in November when Abbott says some of its continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors were providing incorrect low glucose warnings. Internal testing identified the issue—carbon building up in the sensors during the manufacturing process—and determined that approximately 3 million CGM sensors were affected. The sensors were distributed in the United States, Canada and several European countries.  When Abbott shared that announcement, the FDA was still reviewing the situation. No recalls had yet been finalized. Now, however, the agency has announced four new Class I recalls.   https://cardiovascularbusiness.com/topics/clinical/heart-health/fda-confirms-recalls-abbott-cgm-sensors-new-lawsuit-alleges-company-concealed-information XX   Insulet brings back it's U.S. Pod recycling program, now making it available to all U.S. customers. The Pod recycling program, offered at no cost to customers, enables users to request a recycling kit online. This allows them to return their used Omnipods. Insulet then decontaminates the returned Pods before transporting them to a company specializing in recycling for electronics and medical products. Insulet began recycling pilot programs in Mass and California and are rolling it out nationwide. Insulet also has "Pod takeback" programs outside the U.S. in several international markets. These programs enable customers to request a takeback kit by contacting their local customer support team.   https://www.drugdeliverybusiness.com/insulet-expands-us-pod-recycling-program/ XX Up next a new resource for a population at three times the risk for diabetes, but without a lot of access to health information. I The first diabetes information website primarily in ASL has launched. The site includes GIFs and videos on diabetes management and an ASL glossary of diabetes-related terms. This is from University of Utah Health – Called Deaf Diabetes Can Together. Deaf and hard of hearing people are at three times higher risk for diabetes, but access to health information in ASL is limited. https://healthcare.utah.edu/newsroom/news/2026/01/first-diabetes-information-website-asl-launches XX Novo Nordisk ended all work on cell therapies, including a Type 1 diabetes program, in October – and now has found a buyer. Aspect has acquired rights to the assets and giving Novo an option to reengage for later-stage development and commercialization. Novo is helping bankroll Aspect's development of the assets, investing in the company and providing research funding. The arrangement gives Novo a chance to profit from the programs down the line. Novo is eligible for royalties and milestone payments on future product sales and, having handed the reins to Aspect for now, can expand its role in later-stage development and commercialization. The integration will involve the transfer of capabilities and expertise from Novo sites in Denmark and the U.S. to Aspect's Canadian operations. https://www.fiercebiotech.com/biotech/novo-nordisk-offloads-diabetes-assets-aspect-amid-cell-therapy-retreat XX XX Lucas Escobar has carved a role by proving that healthcare marketing can be culturally resonant, commercially powerful and deeply human. As director and head of U.S. consumer marketing at Insulet, he has redefined how the Omnipod tubeless insulin pump shows up in culture, transforming a medical device into a symbol of identity, inclusion and empowerment.   Under Escobar's leadership, Insulet launched three breakthrough initiatives: Dyasonic: Sound of Strength, a Marvel comic collaboration introducing a superhero who uses Omnipod; The Pod Drop, which turned the sound of a pod change into a celebratory music track; and Omnipod Mango x Pantone, medtech's first color partnership, honoring the vibrancy of the diabetes community. Each blended creativity with purpose while driving results, helping fuel Omnipod's consistent double-digit growth and its position as the most prescribed insulin pump in the U.S.   Living with type 1 diabetes himself, Escobar brings lived experience to his work, using storytelling not just to sell, but to make people feel seen.   Click here to return to the 2026 MM+M 40 Under 40 homepage.   From the January 01, 2026 Issue of MM+M - Medical Marketing and Media https://www.mmm-online.com/40-under-40/40-under-40-lucas-escobar-insulet/ -- FDA approves an update to the prescribing info for Afrezza inhaled insulin. This is a revision to the recommendations for the starting mealtime dosage when patients switch from shots or insulin pumps. This is aimed at healthcare providers - the updated labeling was supported by results from the INHALE-3 trial. The FDA is still considering approval of Afrezza for kids – a decision there expect by summer. https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2026/01/26/3225442/29517/en/MannKind-Announces-FDA-Approval-of-Updated-Afrezza-Label-Providing-Starting-Dose-Guidance-when-Switching-from-Multiple-Daily-Injections-MDI-or-Insulin-Pump-Mealtime-Therapy.html   -- UK researchers have developed a calculator to predict whether someone is at risk for type 1 diabetes. They're hoping this helps in screening and in preventing DKA at diagnosis. They used the TEDDY study to create this calculator, which right now is in beta form and only for kids and teens ages 8-18. The current beta form of the calculator asks users to answer questions about four factors necessary to estimate a child's risk of developing type 1 diabetes: age, family history, number of confirmed autoantibodies, and genetic risk score. The calculator has been given regulatory approval as a diagnostic in the U.K., and he's working with a company that's hoping to bring it to the U.S. in the next few months in the form of a home genetic test kit. https://www.healthcentral.com/news/type-1-diabetes/new-calculator-might-help-predict-type-1-diabetes-before-symptoms-appear

Piše Iztok Ilich, bereta Jure Franko in Lidija Hartman.

Většina českých médií jásá a posunuje budoucího českého premiéra někam nad oblaka. A kdo zjistí, jestli není zneužívána politická moc?

Tvrdí to vo veľkej analýze školskej reformy analytik Centra vzdelávacích analýz Michal Rehúš.Spočiatku to mal byt Veľký skok, potom zasa Nežná revolúcia. Napokon sa z toho stala taká tá typicky slovensky nedotiahnutá snaha o akési „zglajchšaltovanie“ slovenského školstva.Parlament schválil veľký balík siedmych zákonov z dielne ministra školstva. Množstvo nedotiahnutých i silne kontroverzných zmien. This week on On The Line, Matt Gurney is joined by two guests for two very different conversations. First up is Christopher Nardi, a parliamentary reporter at the National Post's Ottawa bureau, and an old friend of Matt's. They talk about the end of the summer — yes, sadly it's true — and what we've seen so far from the Carney government. Chris offers some hope that there might be more going on than has met the eye, but he's also a realist about the challenges the new government is going to face. The two also touch on the Conservatives, and why that party is glad to have its leader back in the House, before musing about the future — if any — of the federal NDP. They aren't writing the New Democrats off entirely, but making it back from here will be a steep climb. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by Airbnb. Canada needs to take real action on bringing housing costs down – but experts agree that regulating short-term rentals like Airbnb is nothing more than a distraction. This makes sense when you consider two key statistics: Canada needs 5.8 million homes to reach affordability by 2030, and Airbnbs account for only 0.6 per cent of Canada's overall housing stock. The closer you look, the clearer it gets that Canada needs bold action that addresses the entire housing market, not just 0.6 per cent of it.Additionally, regulating short-term rentals would limit the productive role that Airbnbs play in helping Canadians get by. Did you know that 47 per cent of Airbnb hosts in Canada report that income from hosting has helped them stay in their homes? To learn more about how Airbnb is helping, not hurting, Canada's economy, visit Airbnb.ca/closerlook.After that, Matt is joined by Ian Runkle, a lawyer with expertise in firearms law and self-defence, and also the voice behind the YouTube channel Runkle of the Bailey. The conversation is all about, as they say, "just the facts." What is the law on self-defense in Canada? What can you do, and what can't you do? Why did an attempt by the Harper government to make the law better for people defending themselves actually end up making things worse in some ways? And if Ian had the chance, how would he fix it? As it turns out, he and Matt are thinking along very similar lines. This episode is also brought to you by the Métis Nation of Ontario. It's Penetanguishene, 1840. More than a decade after relocating from Drummond Island, a group of Métis families signed their names to paper. Their petition was simple: recognize us and our rights. The answer was a policy formally excluding Métis communities from recognition, denying their existence for generations. But the petitions did not stop. From Penetanguishene to Sault Ste. Marie, Fort Frances and north to Moose Factory, Métis in Ontario insisted they are a distinct Indigenous people, with their own history, identity, and rights. That fight has carried forward into self-government agreements with Canada. Today, the Métis Nation of Ontario is a recognized Métis government, with the authority to build its own laws, institutions, and future. What began as a petition nearly two centuries ago lives on in the work of the MNO today, ensuring that Métis rights are recognized for generations to come. In this episode of On The Line join Jen Gerson as she delves into a fascinating conversation with Professor Avi Loeb, a renowned astrophysicist, about the mysteries of interstellar objects and the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence. This episode of On The Line is brought to you by Airbnb. It's no secret that Canada is in a housing crisis. Some think that short-term rentals such as Airbnbs are the problem. But the total amount of Airbnbs that could be converted into long-term homes accounts for only 0.6 per cent of Canada's housing stock. In reality, Airbnbs play a key role in stimulating local economies across Canada, with Airbnb guests generating an estimated $10.8 billion in visitor spending. Learn more at Airbnb.ca/closerlook.Leob is best known for his work arguing for the possibility that many recently discovered interstellar objects, like  Oumuamua may, in fact, be extraterrestrial in origin. Either space trash from a distant civilization or even an intelligent probe. He's back in the news this week with thoughts about a recently discovered object now heading toward our sun known as 3I/ATLAS. This episode is also brought to by the Métis Nation of Ontario. It's Sault Ste. Marie, in 1820. In the early 1800s, on the St. Mary's River, Métis traders moved fur, fish, and goods through the water highways of the Upper Great Lakes. Before Confederation, there was a country being built with supplies brought one canoe at a time. Today, Métis governments like the Métis Nation of Ontario are building again. Canada is investing billions to strengthen the economy against tariffs. To last, this next economy must include the people who built the first one. The MNO is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to work with Métis governments to improve consultation and partnerships on major projects and expand investments in Métis businesses and communities. This episode of On The Line was recorded in advance, as Matt Gurney is away on summer vacation. But we didn't want to leave you hanging — so we've got two long-form conversations this week that are well worth your time. This episode is also brought to you by the Métis Nation of Ontario. For generations, Métis communities in Ontario helped build Canada's first great economy — the fur trade. They farmed, traded, raised families, and fought for their rights. In 1993, they founded the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) to protect their future. In 2003, the Supreme Court affirmed their rights. In 2023, Canada recognized the MNO as the Métis Government in Ontario. Now, with a newly elected federal government, it's time to move forward. The MNO is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to advance the government-to-government relationship; resolve outstanding historic Métis claims; improve access to health care, mental health, and addictions services; and invest in Métis housing, education, and infrastructure. Generations of leadership brought us here. It's time to get it done. Learn more at OntarioMetisFacts.com.In the first segment, Matt catches up with his old National Post colleague Tristin Hopper, now the author of Don't Be Canada: How One Country Did Everything Wrong All At Once. They talk about what prompted the book, the reporting moments that pushed him over the edge, and how quickly the world's view of Canada has shifted. Some readers saw it as a welcome dose of honesty. Others, as a betrayal. Matt gets it — he's had exactly the same reactions whenever he's noted things like "Maybe we shouldn't have so much trash on the sidewalks." In the second segment, Matt speaks with Mitch Case of the Métis Nation of Ontario about Indigenous rights, especially around resource development. What does “consultation and accommodation” actually mean on the ground? Why do Canadians and Americans keep getting it wrong? Mitch also reflects on the differences between how each country understands (or doesn't understand) its own history — and the frustrations that follow for Indigenous peoples.Full disclosure: The MNO is an advertising partner for The Line, including for this episode. But this segment is not sponsored content — it was produced through The Line's normal editorial processes, and the MNO did not receive (or ever seek) any special treatment or consideration, and exercised no editorial control over the interview or its contents. Z nedávnej minulosti by sme vedeli nájsť príklady, kedy z nenávisti ťažili, nenávisť využívali a hojne podporovali.”Právna úprava nenávistných prejavov je podľa Tomáša Kamenca dostatočná. “V našej spoločnosti chýba rešpekt a politikom zodpovednosť. Vymenil by som akýkoľvek nový paragraf za zodpovednosť politikov.”

Did the Cincinnati Bengals Have a Strong Enough 2025 NFL Draft Class? The Cincinnati Bengals' 2025 NFL Draft class has sparked debate among fans and analysts, with questions lingering about whether it was robust enough to elevate the team back to Super Bowl contention. With six picks, the Bengals focused heavily on defense and offensive line depth, but the class's immediate impact and long-term potential remain under scrutiny. The headliner, first-round edge rusher Shemar Stewart from Texas A&M (No. 17 overall), embodies the draft's high-risk, high-reward theme. Stewart's athleticism—6'5”, 267 pounds, with a 40-inch vertical—screams elite pass-rusher potential, yet his college production (4.5 sacks over three seasons) raises concerns about his readiness to contribute instantly alongside Trey Hendrickson, whose future with the team is uncertain. Analysts like Drew Garrison gave this pick a C, citing other defenders who could have offered quicker returns. Second-round linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. (South Carolina) and fourth-rounder Barrett Carter (Clemson) addressed a pressing need at linebacker, especially with Germaine Pratt's trade request. Knight's versatility and Carter's speed bolster the unit, but Knight's age (25) and Carter's undersized frame question their ceilings. Third-round guard Dylan Fairchild (Georgia) was a fan favorite, earning praise for his wrestling background and fit with new offensive line coach Scott Peters. However, fifth-round tackle/guard Jalen Rivers (Miami) and sixth-round running back Tahj Brooks (Texas Tech) are seen as depth pieces rather than game-changers. Critics argue the Bengals missed opportunities to address the secondary or add a pass-rushing defensive tackle, leaving holes in Al Golden's defensive scheme. Posts on X reflect mixed sentiment, with grades ranging from B to D, averaging a C-. While the class emphasizes maturity and leadership, its lack of immediate impact players could hinder a team banking on Joe Burrow's prime. Time will tell if this draft pushes Cincinnati forward or falls short.
