Joe Hisaishi is known for his scores to Studio Ghibli films, like this spacious theme from Spirited Away. It features quartal harmonies with a slightly eerie vibe to start with, but settles after a while into a perfect lounge piece. There are a few different official versions with Hisiashi himself, and in this video we see where they differ. With pianist Henrik Kilhamn.Video: https://youtu.be/_tRSzrQL-xU

This episode of Sync Music Matters is an interview with NYX's  Sian O'Gorman about the scoring of the BBC series Dope Girls NYX is a collective of experimental vocalists and electronic artists based in London. In Greek mythology, NYX is the primordial goddess of the night, born from chaos giving birth to light and day. And it's this duality which inspires their creativity. NYX blend traditional vocal techniques with cutting-edge sound design, and in doing so they craft sonic worlds that bridge the ancient and the futuristic In 2020 their collaborative album Deep England with Gazelle Twin was named one of The Guardian's top ten contemporary albums and in 2021 NYX received Film London's Breakthrough Talent Award. They have just completed their debut TV score for the BBCs Dope Girls due out in the first half of 2025 and are due to release their debut album NYX in March 2025 Some of Sian's musical influences which aren't mentioned in the show include: Her hero Joe Hisaishi "I listen to my Miyazaki film soundtracks almost daily" The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance OST by Daniel Pemberton Mica Levi's Zone of Interest score "My mind was completely blown" Colin Stetson forever! Centred around care, connection, and collaboration, the collective creates immersive sonic landscapes that traverse the full spectrum of human emotion – from the depths of grief to ecstatic joy. Their work balances ritualistic intensity with playful exploration, offering audiences a transformative experience to ground themselves in the power of sound and embodiment. Drawing on influences from psychoacoustics, somatic practices, and experimental sound design, NYX operates at the intersection of composition and improvisation. At the heart of NYX's artistry is a distinct compositional process led by music director Sian O'Gorman. Each piece begins as a deeply personal act of vocal experimentation and layering, evolving into dynamic sonic landscapes shaped collaboratively with performers. This process blends improvisation with precise direction, resulting in music that feels both curated and alive. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:02:00 Interview with NYX - What was your path into music 20:19:06 Under The Skin - Dope Girls and the debut Album NYX 56:16:00 Getting a Taste - What music and art has influenced you? (mg)

Our Guest: Lucie Tassel--Lucie Tassel is an artist with ' experience, and a completely atypical background.-Being French, she naturally made her debut in Paris, where she is originally from. Under the direction of Ned Grujic, she played the role of Helen Sinclair in Bullets Over Broadway and was part of the On The Town and Godspell ensembles at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. She also played the role of Poncia in Federico García Lorca's play The House of Bernarda Alba at the Théâtre de La Nouvelle Athènes, directed by Guillaume Bouchède. She was also a member of the chorus of the symphony orchestra accompanying Joe Hisaishi on his last tour of France, and the singers of the Chœur à l'horizon, a Paris-based professional chorus specializing in the musical theatre repertoire, created and directed by Nima Santonja. In 2024, she played the lead role of Della in Sneaky Pete's Wild West Dinner Show at the Legacy Dinner Theatre in Wisconsin, USA. She is also the producer and artistic director of the A-Broad'way Cabaret, in collaboration with Kendra McBride as musical director, which opens this November at Green Room 42 in New York City, and in which she will sing alongside other international artists.-Lucie is a graduate of ECM in Paris, a musical comedy school run by Ned Grujic and Véronique Fruchart, where she trained for 3 years in singing (vocal technique, polyphony, musicianship), dance (classical, jazz, tap), theater (classical, contemporary, mime, clowning) and stage combat (swords, batons). —She also trained in cartoon voice-over with Edwige Chandelier. —To complete her professional training, she moved to New York to study at AMDA, the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where she benefited from American expertise, honing her skills in singing, dancing and acting.A sportswoman from an early age, she has a passion for salsa and other Latin dances, and enjoys a wide range of disciplines including tennis (her specialty), climbing, skiing, horse-riding and rollerblading. Lucie's career path is atypical: after obtaining her Master's degree in physical and nutritional rehabilitation, she worked as an elementary school teacher in Paris for 5 years before devoting herself fully to the performing arts. Trilingual French-Spanish-English, she is also a traveler who, after visiting several countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and America, fell in love with Venezuela, a country that really helped her grow emotionally and from which she has learned an enormous amount. All these trips, and the people she met along the way, opened her heart and mind, bringing to light what she dared not admit but secretly dreamed of: being an artist.----Join the conversation LiveChat as we raise the questions, give our opinions , and ask you the same questions... --Live Chat with Us Every week... -----Music: Audio Podcast : by Daniel Howse : www.youtube.com/ProfessorSoraMusic ** OneMicNite Theme Song "Chance" & Background Song "Kanye" Host:--Contact/ Follow Marcos on IG/Fb/IMdb/Twitter/TikTok: @MarcosLuis —Show: OneMicNite Podcast with Marcos Luis *Contact/Follow: IG/Fb/Twitter/Tumbler/LinkedIn/Youtube/TikTok @OneMicNite www.OneMicnite.com - - ** Listen to Audio Podcast: Available wherever you download , all digital platforms.. ** Support Us Now: http:www.Anchor.fm/onemicnitetalk ---Follow/Contact -- The Show: All Social Media Fb/Ig/Twitter/Tumbler/TikTok/ *** watch the episodes on Youtube @OneMicNite & www.OneMicNite.com****Please Support this Podcast: PayPal/ Zell Pay: MarcosStarActor@gmail.com Venmo @ Marcoso-Luis-1 CashApp : $MarcosLuis1 Please Visit: The AzulesEn Online store to find Products that Compliment your Lifestyle: Link : https://azulesen.myshopify.com/products/onemicnite-signature-logo-unisex-talk-live-pod-tee --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onemicnite/support

[School of Movies 2023] Arguably director Hayao Miyazaki's finest hour, and by extension the peak of composer Joe Hisaishi and for Studio Ghibli in general. This one is almost too easy to either sing the praises of, or to dismiss because it was so popular. Disney distributed it in America, and it made $395 million, which might make it the most successful theatrical release for an anime movie. By contrast, My Neighbours the Yamadas two years prior in 1999 made $11 million on three quarters the budget. Spirited away was showered with critical praise and won many awards. It's the popular girl. But this girl is also endlessly fascinating; stirring, whimsical, intelligent, exciting, funny, and unforgettable. She stays with us, and we return to her again and again for comfort and to feel that sense of quiet awe. It's also noteworthy that this has one of the best American language tracks for any Japanese film; Daveigh Chase (Lilo of Stitch fame, Donnie Darko's sister and the girl from The Ring), Jason Marsden (Max in The Goofy Movie), Susan Egan (Megara of Hercules fame and the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast) Suzanne Pleshette (The Birds) David Ogden Stiers (Lilo & Stitch and Beauty and the Beast) and Tara Strong (literally every cartoon ever made). On this one occasion you should definitely try Dub AND Sub. This is the film we chose to close out our 2023 series on the studio (though we still have The Boy and the Heron, along with 'The Imaginary' from Studio Ponoc, and whatever the future brings. We will be there to curate their art. Guests: Brenden Agnew of Cinapse  @BLCAgnew Alejandra Vargas @Plutoburns whose YouTube channel is here

Initially conceived as a short film exclusively for in-flight guests of Japan Airlines, the film eventually grew in ambition and scope and now stands as one of Miyazaki's most underrated, visually transcendent masterpieces. We discuss the film's many classic Hollywood touchpoints, including the films of Howard Hawks, Victor Fleming, and John Ford and how these influences create a sense of fantasy more grounded that other Miyazaki works. Then, we discuss the film's setting amidst the rising tide of fascism in the Adriatic and its connection to the moving character portrait at its core. Finally, we discuss how 'Porco Rosso' (perhaps more than any other film) suggests some of the director's late period affinities in works like 'The Wind Rises'.Plus: We talk Miyazaki's latest work 'The Boy & The Heron', which we have all had the chance to see ahead of its wide release in the US Friday, 12/8/23. Follow Adam Sullivan on Twitter.Read and subscribe to Adam's newsletter "eventually, forever".....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish

Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's second Countdown miniseries on 2023, a podcast first focusing entirely on the works of Japanese animator, Hayao Miyazaki: the Miyazaki Countdown. To honor one of the living legends of animation, the countdown crew of Scott, Scott, and Jay will watch all 11 of Miyazaki's films to-date, rewinding all the way back to his directorial origins with 1979's action-adventure heist thriller LUPIN III: THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, all the way to his then-final film, 2013's biographical epic romance drama, THE WIND RISES. Join us each week over the next 11 weeks, as we build up to what is Miyazaki's self-proclaimed now-final film (we'll see...), the fantasy epic, THE BOY AND THE HERON.   In Part 8 of the Miyazaki Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay discuss Hayao Miyazaki's most acclaimed film to-date, the 2001 Academy Award winning animated fantasy film, SPIRITED AWAY. SPIRITED AWAY tells the story of a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro, whose family are traveling to their new home in a new city. Chihiro's father takes Chihiro and her mother on a detour as they near their new home to explore an abandoned amusement park, and while there, they find a restaurant curiously fully stocked with prepared foods. Hungry, Chihiro's parents ravenously begin to consume the food, making Chihiro uncomfortable and leading her to explore the nearby attractions, including a bathhouse. Approaching the bridge to the bathhouse, a mysterious boy, named Haku, appears to Chihiro and begs her to leave before nightfall. Rushing back to warn her parents, Chihiro finds only pigs where her mother and father were before, and panickedly fleeing the impending nightfall, Chihiro is stopped in her tracks when an ocean of water blocks her path back to the amusement park entrance. Stuck in this unknown and scary fantastical world, Chihiro must adapt quickly to her new surroundings and navigate new potential allies and enemies, all while finding a way to rescue her parents and return to the real world. The countdown crew give their thoughts on what many consider Miyazaki's greatest film, including the numerous themes of environmentalism, consumerism, and traditional cultural values, in addition to discussing Chihiro as a potential evolution in Miyazaki's lead character archetype and the reversion back to a smaller-scale narrative from the expansive PRINCESS MONONOKE. (Oh yeah, and an absolutely ludicrous Joe Hisaishi score, though what's new.)

Join us each week over the next 11 weeks, as we build up to what is Miyazaki's self-proclaimed now-final film (we'll see...), the fantasy epic, THE BOY AND THE HERON.   In Part 5 of the Miyazaki Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay discuss the conclusion of Hayao Miyazaki's incredible 3-year run with the 1989 fantasy coming-of-age anime film, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE. In a rare adaptation from Miyazaki, based on the Japanese children's fantasy novel of the same name by Eiko Kaduno, KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE takes copious liberties in its telling of the coming-of-age story of a 13-year-old witch, who sets off from home with her talking black cat "familiar" named Jiji, under the good omen of a full moon. Like her witch mother before her, Kiki must spend a year in a city with no other witches in it, learn a skill, become independent, and thereby prove her worth and abilities as a witch contributing to society. Like all great coming-of-age stories (and adventures too for that matter), Kiki is quickly beset with setbacks: a great storm forces her to take shelter on a train overnight; an aviation-loving boy named Tombo is extremely forward with Kiki on the street after becoming enamored with her flying abilities; and Kiki of course has no idea what she's going to do and what of her skills she can leverage to survive and thrive in her new port-city home. The good news is that Kiki doesn't have to do it alone. She has her trusty familiar, Jiji, and a very kind bakery owner who provides Kiki with housing and a job while Kiki figures it all out. All that's left is for Kiki to navigate a new city, looking for a new job, with barely any friends! Easy enough. The countdown crew give their thoughts on Miyazaki's first real crack at a coming-of-age film, where Kiki ranks in the animation king's lead character ensemble thus far, and just how immaculate the vibes are combining the vision for the film's port city setting and Joe Hisaishi's strings-heavy European-inspired score.

Chad and I primarily talk about his latest score, which is for the documentary miniseries Algiers, America, following a high school football team in New Orleans (the Edna Carr Cougars). The score mostly features Chad's modern classical compositions, as well as some New Orleans-centric elements that Chad crafted with a few local musicians. As such, Chad talks about the challenge of scoring around three hours of music, visiting New Orleans to get in touch with the city's musicality, and balancing various musical elements, styles, and genres.   Along the way, we also cover Chad's prolific work in the documentary scoring arena, carving out a bit of a specialization within the field (although he has done a number of fiction films, series, and videogames as well), and how and why the public reception to documentary music differs from that of music for other media. Finally, we briefly touch on Chad's work in arranging for legendary composer Joe Hisaishi, and Chad's upcoming project in which Hisaishi is providing the main theme.   You can find out more about Chad on his website. Algiers, America is currently on Hulu, and while Chad's score is not yet available, many of his other works are available digitally on all major platforms.
