From Authenticity to Audacity: Alina Addison's Blueprint for Purpose-Led Leadership We chat to Alina Addison, author of ‘The Audacity Spectrum: Leading with Care, Courage and Non-Conformity' In our latest Starts at the Top episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Alina Addison, author of "The Audacity Spectrum" and founder of Adaptaa. Alina's take on leadership is bold and refreshing. She challenges the idea that leaders are often pigeonholed as "too much" or "not enough", instead encouraging us to embrace our quirks and lead authentically. We covered quite a bit of ground, including: Alina's intriguing 'eight A's' of leadership Why so-called 'soft skills' are actually hard to master Balancing care for others with self-care The role of emotional intelligence in decision-making Practical tips for more authentic leadership Whether you're grappling with how to lead differently, or simply curious about new approaches to leadership, there's plenty to chew on here. We were particularly struck by Alina's simple yet powerful advice: take a moment to breathe, say 'thank you' daily, and don't be afraid to take that first step towards change. Do give it a listen. We think you'll find it a thought-provoking way to spend 45 minutes of your day. In tech news, Zoe and Paul discuss why diversity in the tech workforce is getting less funding and airtime.   Notes More about Alina's book ‘The Audacity Spectrum' https://profilebooks.com/2024/08/19/the-audacity-spectrum-read-an-extract/ Information about Adaptaa https://adaptaa.co.uk/ BBC story about women in tech groups and diversity https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7858w2yj75o Our episode with Maggie Philbin https://www.startsatthetop.co.uk/episodes/episode13-maggiephilbin-teentech And please leave us a review if you enjoy what you hear! Now, most of us know Maggie from the days of Swap Shop. Millions of children tuned in every Saturday – and she helped transform weekend mornings. Noel Edmonds, Keith Chegwin, John Craven and then Maggie bringing joy to our screens.  Hours of live television every week (top fact, they only ever rehearsed the first 30 seconds) and their audience was so big they attracted the biggest stars in the world.  She then moved to Tomorrow's World where for 8 years she helped change the way we all think about science and technology. This all helped inspire her to begin her own Next Chapter and set up the charity Teen Tech which 15 years later she and her team are still changing and transforming the way young people think about science and maths. Maggie believes it's all about learning – and we must all keep doing this, not just for us but for our children's too.  Maggie is open, honest and humble. She tells us how she applied for the Swap Shop job without even knowing about it and how self-doubt nearly cost her that job at Tomorrow's World. But a long time ago she taught herself to recognise her fear and she promised to say 'yes' more. I'm so pleased she said yes to this conversation..

Their booze-fuelled discourse elevated once again by the magnificent Ozzy Bognops, our plucky protagonists wade bottle-opener-first into both... This week it's 1982, where powers of observation, recall and generally giving a single cinematic fig are stretched to their very limits under the auspices of Brian Trueman in Screen Test. Then, after tea, it's time to sit back down and be left utterly agog at the miraculous inventions and advancements which await our society in Tomorrow's World. Is Trueman's fragile mortal shell about to be torn asunder by the God-like power he wields over his contestants? Are radio-telephones really going to become all of the rage outside of That London? And is there any greater tonic in these troubled times for the middle-aged man than Maggie Philbin in a pink jumpsuit? These secrets lie herein...
