Welcome to a special episode of Doing the Opposite: Business Disruptors – a panel discussion with innovative business leaders. Today, Jeff Dewing is joined by Nicola Smith who is Interim CEO at Timewise, an organisation championing flexible working and equality in the workplace. Simone Roche MBE is founder of Northern Power Women, a community spanning all sectors, genders and socio-economic groups that is dedicated to accelerating gender equality and social mobility. And Sheila Callaham is a co-founder, Executive Director, and Board Chair for Age Equity Alliance who are committed to helping businesses, organisations, and communities ensure Age Equity in the workplace through education, training, and process evaluation. There's no denying that Covid changed the way we all work, forcing many businesses to adopt remote working in a way they may not have done otherwise. But now the pandemic has passed, what legacy is left on the way we operate as businesses and employees. The culture of work has shifted, and employees considering roles are much more focussed on the flexibility around work than they were previously. The panel discuss how businesses need to adapt to be more accommodating, supportive and flexible in order to continue to attract talent and sustain growth. Furthermore, flexible working isn't only about location. It's about how you work, when you work and what's expected of you. Nicola argues that so long as there are clear and reasonable expectations with buy-in from all stakeholders then often the logistics of how or when work is done shouldn't be a consideration. Not all roles can be fully flexible. The panel discuss how businesses can avoid a two-tier workforce emerging, creating separation between the flexible and non-flexible workers. Some work may be time or location specific. How do you avoid those staff feeling like they're missing out on a more flexible role? Sheila suggests that companies can compensate for that through the policies and programmes and benefits that they offer. In January 2018, Blue Monday to be precise, something happened to Melissa Johns that made getting through the day even harder than for most. Naked photos, hacked from her iPhone, were leaked to national newspapers across the UK. What was most striking in the reports for Melissa, who was born without her right arm below the elbow, was the way her body was negatively depicted. Even more significantly, it wasn't the first time she'd experienced it but it was the last time she'd let it define her, and has since written and toured the UK with her one-woman show, Snatched. Outside of acting, Melissa uses her platform to advocate for disabled artists and works as Co-Creative Lead for Bafta Award-winning organisation, TripleC (co-founded with Cherylee Houston) - a collective of disabled and non-disabled creative individuals which runs projects breaking down the barriers for people with disabilities in the arts. Listen to learn: How drama positively impacts disabled youth What TripleC does to further the opportunities of disabled artists How Melissa turned what could have been a devastating experience into one of hope and change What you can expect from Melissa's new stage show, Snatched. ⚡Find Melissa here: https://www.bafta.org/supporting-talent/elevate/melissa-johns ⚡Learn more about TripleC here: https://triplec.org.uk/ ⚡Listen to Cherylee Houston's podcast episode here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-work-better-together/id1250023032?i=1000550260034

In June 2021, Sophie became a Founding Ambassador for Every Child Needs a Mentor. KEY TAKEAWAYS We all know that success starts at home but for a company to be successful it needs more than just domestic sales. To gain international exposure and enter new markets with ease, you need to increase your international presence so people everywhere can purchase what products/services are offered through them. BEST MOMENTS “What made my last business really successful was the relationships that we had with clients and putting them first putting them at the heart of things, and also doing the same with the team as well.” “And it was at a point in time where we were winning all these awards for the business and doing really, really well. And people were like, Oh, you've done so well, you're so successful. And I wanted to say, that doesn't happen overnight. There's a lot that goes into that. And there are a lot of things that you don't see under the surface of things that are happening, and I'm sure you'll be able to relate to this. And it was really important to kind of show the warts and all side of things.” “I think when you're involved in charity boards, in particular, and non-executive boards as well, you meet people that challenge your thinking, you meet people that are experts in other industries and other areas. And that brings so much richness to your own business and your bread. So I think that's really important. I think people should take opportunities to go and speak at events.” “There's some business sense there just around the numbers side of things and looking after your customers and extending the value and the contract size that you have with them. Why is car insurance a way to help people experiencing domestic abuse? What makes women different leaders to men? And why is business a better vehicle for social reform than politics? In this week's 5 Big Questions interview we talk to Freedom Group / Stella Insurance CEO, and Northern Power Woman, SAM WHITE Twitter: @SamWhiteCEO Known for: CEO - The Freedom Group Host - Human Business podcast Regular Contributor - Wake Up To Money (BBC) Regular Contributor - Business Live: With Ian King (Sky) The Big 5 Questions: How do you measure the impact of what you do? How should people/businesses be preparing for the future? How do we build the workforce we need for that future? How do you use creativity to solve problems? How do you collaborate? Key quotes: “Insurance is probably one of the worst marketed business entities in the history of the universe.” “At its core, insurance really does have the power to change the world, because what is it? Well it's a group of individuals all saying, hey you know what, we're all going to put money in because something awful might happen to one of us and if that does occur, then the collective can step in and support. Which is a really phenomenal concept and ideology — and actually something that people should emotionally connect with.” “We give five dollars from every policy sold to Women and Girls Emergency Centre. One of the causes that we're really passionate about as a team is helping women that have been victims of domestic violence, which unfortunately has increased massively due to the lockdown.” “For me what's really encouraging is when I start to see more young female leaders coming into the sector and having a voice and not being afraid to use it. You'll get that personal connection where they'll message you, or come up to you.” “We're currently building a ‘crisis insurance' product, which will be included as part of the motor insurance premium, just sat in the product, that if somebody is unfortunate enough to be a victim of domestic violence we can get funds to them quickly enough to get out of that situation.” “How can we build products that have real value for a real problem that we are trying to support? And how do we then embed that into the community that we are wanting to support, so that everybody is on the same page?” “I believe that the only way we are going to survive as a species and really make the world work, will be through the right kind of businesses.” “I like Andy Burnham, he's a nice guy but my general view with politics is it's a complete waste of time. I've had people say to me: you're very opinionated, why don't you get into politics? Blah blah blah. Absolutely not. Categorically not. Because the system's screwed. It's a dysfunctional, rotten to the core system. Dismantle all the world governments and let the people sort themselves out.” “We question so much more now than we used to, and we have so much more information at our fingertips.” Useful links: Freedom Services Group // freedomservicesgroup.co.uk/ FSC's ‘About Sam White' page // freedomservicesgroup.co.uk/sam-white/all-about-sam-white Profile in The Mirror // mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/i-spent-years-washing-cars-26010470 Stella Insurance (Australia) // stellainsurance.com.au/ Women and Girls Emergency Centre (Australia) // wagec.org.au/ Sam White (LinkedIn) // linkedin.com/in/sam-white-093b9b22/?originalSubdomain=uk Human Business podcast (Apple podcasts) // podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/human-business-with-sam-white/id1476366810 Human Business podcast (Spotify) // open.spotify.com/show/40I1TsoteuWGDcd0vO9GA9?si=dbc3753eb8f3442b Northern Power Women circle // northernpowerwomen.com/ Moving to Employee Ownership (government guidance) // assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/210450/bis-13-949-moving-to-employee-ownership-guidance-on-model-documentation.pdf Employee Ownership Association // employeeownership.co.uk/what-is-employee-ownership/ This episode was recorded in February 2022 Interviewer: Richard Freeman for always possible Editor: CJ Thorpe-Tracey for Lo Fi Arts

Today on Human Business, we're talking about Starting a Movement. Simone Roche is CEO and Founder of Northern Power Women launched this campaign out of a passion to connect and engage with people about gender equality.Simone started her career in the male-dominated military and then held roles at Aintree Racecourse, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, the Arena Convention Centre Liverpool and the Olympics, and she is quick to note that she was not treated differently because she was female. So it wasn’t until she became the Director for a campaign supporting women in the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industry – and she was asked to be a champion for the Government Equalities Office – that gender equality grew to be her passion. When the International Festival for Business was held in Liverpool in 2014, Simone campaigned to include businesses’ role in promoting gender equality and developing talent, and held a sell-out event focused on the role women played in driving the economy.Men and women suddenly saw women’s benefit to the economy – and the role the North could play in driving that. And Simone saw the need and opportunity to focus on gender balance in the northern powerhouse region. Northern Power Women was born.
