Television Times Podcast

This week's guest is the incredibly funny comedian Paul Foot, who took time out of his schedule to come and chat about such things as his love for Angela Lansbury and Premier Inn, his disdain for obvious tropes in modern whodunnits and why the Heinz's monopoly of the baked beans market could well be flannel. Paul explains why the idea of an earth-orbiting Judy Murray brings him comfort and how he summons the ghost of Keith Chegwin whenever he misplaces important items. Paul also comes up with the best ever answer to what TV show might be top of the ratings in the year 2050, so good in fact, that I think it might just get commissioned. Please Follow us on Social Media (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn. Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops, online and directly.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialPaul's socialsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/paulfootcomedyTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@paulfootcomedyTwitter: https://twitter.com/paulfootFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/paulfootcomedyYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@mrpaulfootGet Tickets for Paul's tour 'Dissolve' here: https://www.plosive.co.uk/events/paul-foot-dissolve-tour-2023-2024Produced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. Now, most of us know Maggie from the days of Swap Shop. Millions of children tuned in every Saturday – and she helped transform weekend mornings. Noel Edmonds, Keith Chegwin, John Craven and then Maggie bringing joy to our screens.  Hours of live television every week (top fact, they only ever rehearsed the first 30 seconds) and their audience was so big they attracted the biggest stars in the world.  She then moved to Tomorrow's World where for 8 years she helped change the way we all think about science and technology. This all helped inspire her to begin her own Next Chapter and set up the charity Teen Tech which 15 years later she and her team are still changing and transforming the way young people think about science and maths. Maggie believes it's all about learning – and we must all keep doing this, not just for us but for our children's too.  Maggie is open, honest and humble. She tells us how she applied for the Swap Shop job without even knowing about it and how self-doubt nearly cost her that job at Tomorrow's World. But a long time ago she taught herself to recognise her fear and she promised to say 'yes' more. I'm so pleased she said yes to this conversation..

On episode 63, we've reached 6th March 1923: Glasgow 5SC launches - the BBC's first station in Scotland. It's not Scotland's first radio station (see episode 48 for the tale of how Daimler, Glasgow Motor Show and a couple of electrical shop owners made a couple of pre-BBC pop-up stations). But this sixth BBC station mattered to John Reith more than any other. He'd grown up in Glasgow. His mum came to visit the radio station. He opened the station himself - apart from the bagpipes playing Hey Johnny Cope. You have two fantastic guides through this episode: GRAHAM STEWART, a BBC journalist whose new book Scotland On-Air is out very soon. Details at https://wiki.scotlandonair.com/wiki/Main_Page + TONY CURRIE, of Radio Six International, and author of The Radio Times Story. Details at https://www.radiosix.com/   SHOWNOTES: - I mention an early 1980s children's retrospective that Kathleen Garscadden appears on. It's called Jubilee! 60 Years of Children's Programmes, it's from 1983, it's got Floella Benjamin, Sarah Greene, Mike Read, Keith Chegwin. Tony Hart and many more, including Auntie Cyclone herself, it's fab, and it's here to watch: https://youtu.be/tNZD70HiFsw  - My novel on all this, Auntie and Uncles, is out soon! But not yet. All rights reserved... - ...and preserved. This podcast is the origin story of British broadcasting, told the very slow way - but hopefully in a way that informs, educates and (winks, clicks fingers like the Fonz) entertains. Next time: We're still in March 1923 (a lot happened in March 1923) with broadcasts from the Ideal Home Exhibition, tales of touring variety acts around the early BBC stations, and a fab guest in Hi-de-Hi's Jeffrey Holland. Grant's also got Cheggers in the house? Then it's onto our interview, this week, we're welcoming one of the most important voices in US cider making.  Growing up in the apple country of Western New York State and having tinkered with home fermentation, he got his big break working for Virtue Cider in Chicago more than a decade ago before becoming the Head Cider Maker at the USA's largest producer. Join them for an hour of generally uninformed, irrelevant chat - where they discuss topics such as being an accidental Peeping Tom, sleeping in the same room as Mother Teresa, and getting shouted at by Santa. Stephen is an openly gay, cruise ship magician - and is proud to be at the front of that much underrepresented part of society. He is often heard regaling anecdotes such as how he found himself as a performer on a swingers cruise, his lowest life moment being with Paul Daniel's son at a patisserie in Brazil, and how he tried to blend in at an Australian dive bar. In hindsight, the floral shirt and exposed ankles were a mistake. Ryan has been Stephen's best friend since they first met at 11 years old and shared a communal love for the anecdote. He is the marketing manager for an afternoon tea company, is yet to attend a none catastrophic yoga class, and once got heckled by an eleven year old for being too scared to go on a water slide. He's also openly hetero, although his constant praise of ABBA could lead you to believe otherwise.

During this episode, Janice relives highlights like being the only female broadcaster to cover the Live Aid concert.“I had a friend of mine, Andy Catlin and we decided to meet up and go to Live Aid at the same time, quite early so it was just as the sun was rising. We milled around and got our instructions and I remember standing on the stage and watching the people arrive and they were like little dots, you can imagine and they got bigger and bigger and bigger as they got towards the stage. And I remember being told that if Status Quo “if it doesn't work, you go on”. And I was thinking, “I'm not a stand-up comedian, what the hell am I gonna do!?” But it worked and Tony Hadley and I just hugged each other and we were in tears!”Sadly, Janice passed away in December 2021. Janice continued to share her passion for new music and through to the end of her career gave emerging artists a platform on her BBC Radio Wales show. We hope that you join us in celebrating the vibrant character that Janice was as she shares with us the highs and lows of her phenomenal broadcasting career.

The incredibly wonderful series created by the League of Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. Anyone who enjoys of TOTU will absolutely love it (and probably already watch it) but as massive fans of theirs (and the genre) it's the perfect opportunity to give it the same treatment as we give to the show that almost certainly inspired it. This episode was the first episode of season 1 and sets the tone perfectly for the subsequent episodes - dark, funny, clever, beautifully written, acted and filmed. We obviously weave out own chat into the podcast as usual, so if this is the first time listen and you enjoy it, make sure you give the other episodes a listen too. As always, feedback is great... we're currently riding high on a 5 star average so please contribute to that, give us a review and if you want to contact us, there is a way... i think it's talesoftheunexpected@outlook.com ... enjoy! (p.s. this episode was recorded prior to Keith Chegwin's passing)

An eight-part series about the legendary rivalry between Hollywood icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford comes to BBC2 this Christmas. Matthew Sweet reviews. What makes going to the theatre or cinema a pleasurable experience and what -such as long loo queues, smelly snacks and mobile phones - can ruin a night out. Matthew Sweet stays on to discuss this with journalist Rosamund Urwin.'Snow was general all over Ireland' wrote James Joyce, memorably, in Dubliners. Snow has been a great inspiration to writers and poets. In America Emily Dickinson, Wallace Stevens and Robert Frost have all written beautiful snow poems. But snow is nothing unusual there. Poets here are inspired by snow partly because it comes unexpectedly. There is always an element of surprise and wonder. Gillian Clarke reads her poem Snow, from her collection, Ice. Anne Washburn thinks that almost every American aged over 30 has seen the sci-fi series The Twilight Zone. The playwright tells Kirsty Lang about bringing this television classic to the English stage. The television presenter Keith Chegwin's death was announced today. There will be many tributes to Cheggers, Front Row celebrates his foray into high culture, linking his name forever with Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Roman Polanski and an obscure ensemble called The Third Ear Band. In 1971 Chegwin played Fleance in Polanski's wonderful film of Macbeth and he sang part of the Rondel of Merciless Beauty by Chaucer - an unexpected contrast to Cheggers Plays Pop. "At my signal, unleash hell" The keyword this week is EPIC as we watch Ridley Scott's Gladiator, and we quickly discover that our very own Rachael actually worked on this movie!  She lets us in on the experience of making a wig for the modest and self-effacing Russell Crowe and decries the lack of credit given to wig makers in movies.  Paul has been working on his best Maximus Decimus Meridius impression, eulogising Oliver Reed and spotting "The Voice of Iggle Piggle", and the team are mystified at Russell Crowe's Oscar win and come to the conclusion he won it mainly for "squinting a bit". And we hear about a cancelled sequel which would have featured a time travelling Maximus in Vietnam – which Paul swears he hasn't made up. Meanwhile, Andy's verdict:  "It was good". Elsewhere in a packed show, Rachael is inspired by one of the famous improvised lines in Gladiator to look at some more unplanned moments in movies, including Pretty Woman, Good Will Hunting and Harry Potter. And Andy is surprised by the appearance of UK comedian Omid Djalili in Gladiator and seeks out some more unexpected appearances of UK television stars in big Hollywood movies, including Leonard Rossiter and Keith Chegwin! Show 5 of AIOTM is an offensiveness special. Rich gives his definitive thoughts on where the boundaries of comedy lie and decides the only way forward is to become more offensive. Along the way we discover too much about cumpkins, Keith Chegwin's cock, Emma Kennedy's grandad, Dan Tetsell's hatred of personalised novels, Christian Riley's live of dinosaur rock, and experience Richard's second great yoghurt based masterwork. It's quite a good one. Hope you don't view it as a slap in the face. But if you don't, you're clearly not a genuine comedy fan!

First things first. As mentioned last episode, the One Life Left team is a (wo?)man down in #54. Don't let that put you off. Why?Bang! A more-than-capable, super hot OLL Substitute who once almost KILLED Simon!Zip! An interview with new game superstar Keith Chegwin! Kapow! Exclusive videogame gossip, exclusive to our exclusive show. Exclusively! Ka-ching! David McCarthy's Reviewing Masterclass continues to blow the secrets behind games reviewing wide open!Whoosh! Ann visits the Sex Pistols!Etc! Brilliant music, awesome news, amazing features, acceptable letters, ill-considered competitions and a very special review!Of course, there's lots more inside the podcast for you to discover. So much so that we actually ended up with three things we didn't play this week because we didn't have time. It'd be a bit of a waste to slot them into the podcast so they'll be part of next week's show.Which will therefore include the return of two amazing features, our continued attempts to get a guest on the phone, a sweet competition prize and we imagine not a single word about Super Mario Galaxy. We'll all be sick of it by then, right?Right?Right?See you in a week.Extra links:Facebook (the race to 300 -- and to exceed our host station's total --  is ON)Weird Facebook 'Company' thing (it puts an OLL badge on your profile!!!!!!)MySpace (we really need to update this, don't we?
