We're back, baby! Starting off book 2 of the Magnus Chase series with the return, and consequent murder, of our favorite goat, Otis. Manasa brings up Hoodwinked this time. Magnus has a wild chase with a goat killer. Jack is really into pop music now and has had a lot of personality development. Jack is now Manasa's enemy. We get to meet Alex Fierro, a character we have long-anticipated, and see her in weasel form. Magnus is yearning immediately. Erin suggests watching both Hoodwinked and the Spongebob Movie for research purposes. The Hammer of Thor, ch. 26 to 30 I feel I should clarify up front that this is not, in fact, our first ever live episode. The title might be confusing. However, it is our first episode on these five chapters from the second Magnus Chase book! We finish up our slow and steady trek through Alfheim with some discussion on the richest crustpunk, a tentative pause to Hearth and Blitz's story, the rhetorical Annabeth, the respect of the wilds, and just how useful it is to try and speedrun your fiance's brainmelting. Prophecy Radio episode #121 is our chance to give you all our highlights from Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. We hit on our favorite moments, favorite characters, and talk a bit about what we would change if we had the chance. We also talk about the major Percy Jackson and Rick Riordan news, including Leah Sava Jeffries' big win at the NAACP Image awards, as well as read some listener feedback. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:34) Leah won the NAACP Image award! She is so deserving, it's not even funny. Hopefully this is just the first of many… we're looking at you, Emmy Awards. There's a new boxset with the first book in Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, The Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo. It's the perfect gift for old Rick Riordan fans to give to new readers in their lives. Stacey Lee (beloved author of Winston Chu vs. The Whimsies) has a new book coming out April 23 called Kill Her Twice. It's a murder mystery set in 1932 Los Angeles Chinatown. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 favorites wrap up (00:15:13) Overall feelings for season 1? (Spoiler Alert: We liked it.) We have similar thoughts on our favorite episode. Kristen got into the doc first and stole all the best answers. We're big fans of impertinence. We're sensing a theme: We're big fans of the show's portrayal of Grover. There are some strong feelings about our favorite gods this season. What surprised us the most? Let's face it, we all wanted season 1 to be a million episodes, but eight still felt a little short to us. If we were in charge, what would we have changed about Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1? Feedback (00:52:50) You guys had some really wonderful reactions to our adjustments to the podcast structure. Thanks for hanging with us as we find a new normal. Ensign Davies reminds us that an animated Kane Chronicles adaptation would not be the death of crossover potential. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 122, in which we'll be talking all things A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel, and maybe have a guest host stop by for the discussion! We're not ending the show!If you read the title, got freaked, and immediately checked the show notes, let us assure you that the announcement isn't the end of Muses of Mythology. Since you're here, we'll give you the short version: The first ten minutes is the start of what was meant to be our Einherjar episode. Then we went off-mic for about 30 minutes to have a serious conversation about some challenges we've experienced recently and the show's future. We're not ending the show. We're not abandoning our journey into Norse mythology. However, we'll only be dedicating one season to Norse myths. We're going to spend the next few episodes covering the rest of the Magnus Chase books. Then we will restructure our episode topics, combining elements of Norse mythology into single episodes that we feel will best result in a quality listening experience. That's the big announcement. After that, we dropped in a 2022 Patreon bonus episode about A24's The Green Knight because we didn't want to leave you without a proper episode. It's a weird one. The energy is all over the place. We haven't felt like ourselves recently, and it's been really hard. But we're excited about this decision and the direction we're taking this season. Thank you so much for your patience and support. We're reworking the show because of our listeners. We aren't ready to end this adventure with you just yet. We'll be back in your ears on Tuesday, April 2, to talk about Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor. Until then, don't be like Zeus! About UsMuses of Mythology was created and co-hosted by Darien and DJ Smartt. Our music is Athens Festival by Martin Haene. Prophecy Radio episode #77 discusses a little chat we had with Mark Oshiro about working on The Sun and the Star and their excitement for the upcoming book tour. We also catch up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including Rick's latest blog post and a few Read Riordan articles. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 4. Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:36) We get off to a chaotic start, but what's new? Read Riordan asks, “Who Was Bianca Di Angelo?” When was the last time in the Riordanverse we heard about Bianca? Will we ever see Bianca's reincarnated soul at Camp Half-Blood? Can Nico recognize reincarnated souls? Read Riordan also shared “April Fool's Day Prank Plans from the Gods and Demigods.” We are very anti-April Fool's Day, so this will always be a safe space. Turns out “How to Tell if You've Become a Rick Riordan Presents Sidekick” is not a quiz. We discuss Rick's March 27 blog post, “A Spring Update.” Are you ready for all the books coming out this year? We run through all the titles and dates. Mythomagic (the production company) has been pretty busy the last couple of years! Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 is wrapping up nicely! We, once again, try to guess when it'll premiere on Disney+. Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 is underway, even though this is not an official green-light. Could production on season 2 move faster now that they've already got sets built and characters cast? Could season 2 have a larger budget? Daughter of the Deep is moving along at a great clip! In fact, it's moving along a little faster than the Red Pyramid adaptation at Netflix. What about Magnus Chase!? We're big fans of an animated Magnus Chase adaptation, and it sounds like a lot of other people are, too. Be sure to catch Rick Riordan in conversation with Angie Thomas in NYC if you can! Mark Oshiro and The Sun and the Star (00:33:57) Did you pick up a copy of Mark Oshiro's latest novel? Check out Karen's spoiler-free Into the Light book review. You can also read the interview with Mark Oshiro about Into the Light. Karen also got to talk to them about The Sun and the Star. Mark says this was not a dream project—and their answer makes a lot of sense. Do you remember the Daughter of the Deep book tour when Mark was announced as the co-author of the Nico di Angelo book. If you have any doubts…Mark is one of us. Rick really made sure Mark was involved in every decision in regards to this book. Has anyone come close to guessing what happens in The Sun and the Star? Cross your fingers that Mark gets to come back and talk about The Sun and the Star spoilers with us! Fandom has really come such a long way, and it's exciting whenever you meet someone on your level. Hearing Mark's excitement for this book has us even more excited than we already were. As a fan, it's so important to hear that Rick and Mark had equal billing and both made decisions about this book. What are your completely unhinged theories for what could happen in The Sun and the Star? Did you catch the Rainbow Crate announcement for The Sun and the Star? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (01:06:07) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 4. We're doing Netflix synopses for our brief recaps now. BELIEVE CHILDREN. Is Julius' work bag invisible? What do we think of Gran and Gramps? Does Sadie have a dual citizenship? What's going on with Amos and the House? Do Gran and Gramps actually believe in the Egyptian gods? Who wouldn't want a bullet boat? There's definitely something weird going on with that cat. Hopefully we'll get answers once Carter and Sadie make it to New York. Prophecy Radio episode #73 looks back on our re-read of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Which book is our favorite? Did any of our opinions change now that we're older and wiser? We also tackle all the latest Riordanverse news, including more information about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods and some books from a few Rick Riordan Presents authors we think you might like. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and updates (00:02:59) We're back to talk about Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods because Read Riordan had a little teaser about what the chickens will get up to in this story. Rick also wrote a blog on February 24 that gave us some information about the UK and international additions, as well as signed copies. We've heard variations of his answer before, but we discuss the latest bit of information regarding whether there will be more Percy Jackson books after Chalice of the Gods. If you love Magnus Chase and Alex Fierro, then Read Riordan has the article for you! Karen wrote a book review for The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi, so be sure to check that out. And don't forget that Lucha of the Night Forest by Tehlor Kay Mejia and Into the Light by Mark Oshiro both come out soon! Percy Jackson and the Olympians Retrospective (00:13:16) Now that we've finished all five books in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, we're doing a bit of a retrospective to see how we feel about them overall. Even though we all remember what happens in The Lightning Thief, we revisit it for reasons. This book is so good at introducing us to this world and the characters that occupy it. Can you imagine if someone was like nah, we don't need anymore books about Percy Jackson? These kids were SO YOUNG, and things just keep getting darker as they grow up. Moving on to Sea of Monsters, it's apparent that this book laid a lot of groundwork for character development. It was nice to see more Clarisse, but this book also brought us Tyson!!! He's so genuine and loveable. He was really the perfect character to teach Percy and Annabeth a valuable lesson. As we start talking about Titan's Curse, we confess which books are our least favorites (but we swear we still love them!). Annabeth is gone for SO LONG in this book. The Hunters of Artemis are so iconic, and it's pretty cool to meet and get to know Artemis better. On a scale from approachable to aloof, where do all of the gods land? We get to say hello to Nico, but we also have to say goodbye to Bianca. Battle of the Labyrinth is such a dense book because there's so much going on. We also have to balance a lot of characters in this book, both new and old. Nico has a lot of feelings, and we can't say we blame him. The Labyrinth is a character in and of itself. That battle at Camp Half-Blood was a lot more significant than we first realized. Now we're onto the The Last Olympian There's a lot of Backstory! in this book. We kind of love that the Battle of Manhattan takes up so much room. That final confrontation is iconic, and so is Percy's decision to turn down immortality. Btw, Percabeth is a go. All right, what's our favorite book, and why? It's difficult choosing a favorite character, but we've got some pretty solid options. There are so many iconic moments from the books, and we can't wait to see them in the show. We should've totally planned to pick out our favorite creatures/monsters, too. We have a lot of favorite quotes to choose from, and it was tough to decide. This time, we stayed away from Percabeth quotes when we could, since we just talked about them in the last episode. This is yet another reminder that Rick is SO good at first lines. Now that we've really dissected these books, did we have any changes of heart? Did anything surprise us? Lastly, what are we looking forward to seeing the most when we finally get to Heroes of Olympus? Feedback (01:29:51) Nicolaas writes in to give us his answers to all our same questions. Karen's in the hot seat…is she gonna be replaced!? Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 74, where we'll do an overview of the Egyptian gods before tackling The Red Pyramid chapter 1. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. They also break down the Rick Riordan Presents new releases of 2023, and we discuss which titles are missing from the list. J.C. Cervantes announces her adult debut, The Enchanted Hacienda. Paola Santiago is getting translated into Spanish! Rick answers some more Goodreads questions. Maze of Bones (39 Clues) is being turned into a graphic novel! Make sure you're checking Rick's Mastodon because he's been sharing some updates! The Sun and the Star chapter 1 (00:21:44) We discuss Nico's choice to go on a date with…Darth Vader!? There's gonna be a BIG decision Nico will need to make in this book, mark our words. We absolutely love everything about Solangelo, and we can definitely feel Mark's fingerprints all over this. Our hunch is that the Gray Sisters will be significant later in the story. We kind of love that this book is not going to be about saving the world. Who wants to bet we're going to tackle a lot of mental health issues in The Sun and the Star? Will probably has a lot to deal with as well, and we're curious where this will lead. What ghosts do we think Nico will come up against in this book? When will we get to hear the prophecy!? Everything's gonna be fine…right? We really loved this first chapter, even if it feels like an anvil hanging over our heads. Why doesn't he acknowledge that the voice belongs to Bob in this chapter? What are our plans when The Sun and the Star comes out? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:53:56) Let's talk about The Last Olympian chapter 21. The Mist is so interesting, and we theorize where it came from and who might control it. What did we think of Percy's apology, and Hermes' choice to let Luke walk his own path? Good job delivering Annabeth's apology to Percy, Hermes. *eye roll* In the end, did Luke love his father? Can the gods change their natures? Quick, what do Percy Jackson, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Doctor Who have in common? Would you rather see a Percy Jackson story set in the future or the past? Can you IMAGINE having Athena as your mother? Ares has got nothing on her. Sally trying to get up to Olympus in one breath and admonishing Paul for wanting the same in the next will never not be hilarious. We still can't stop imagining Paul Rudd as Paul Blofis. Becky gives us some clues as to why there might be a difference in the signal Zeus puts out to tell Sally that Percy is okay. Karen definitely thought Blackjack was gonna get buff. We're so ready for some answers about Rachel Elizabeth Dare! Will we ever see Leo Valdez again? It turns out we'll learn how Will identifies in The Sun and the Star. Is there a Magnus Chase adaptation in our future? Could Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities ever get an adaptation? Deep Dive: Chiron (00:30:30) There weren't many references to Chiron in Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes and Greek Gods. The Party Ponies are much closer to what actual centaurs are like. Chiron is pretty different because he doesn't share the same ancestry as the other centaurs. There are several different origin stories for centaurs, and all of them are…weird. Did you know some centaurs are horned!? Why does it always come back to Zeus and Hera? Poor Chiron didn't have a very nice childhood. How do you teach a horse gymnastics!? We find out what Chiron is REALLY supposed to look like. We get into the age-old debate of how centaurs would wear pants. Who are some of the heroes Chiron trained? Karen discovers a fun fact about Disney's Hercules! How did Chiron die? What was Chiron like in the Percy Jackson books? More importantly, what did he look like? Why wasn't he a white stallion in any of the visual adaptations of the books? Chiron has a couple of pretty interesting abilities. What are some Chiron-related fun facts from the series? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (00:47:39) This week, we're reading The Last Olympian chapter 16. Did this chapter make us emotional? Did we find it exciting? Is it believable that Annabeth was able to fly the helicopter? This part is going to be SO exciting in the show. If this is Rachel without any training and focus, imagine what's coming next! Do we sympathize with Percy about being mad that Rachel told him he's not the hero? Is it weird that Chiron really wasn't worried when Rachel showed up with some possible prophetic thoughts and dreams? We're up to Prophecy Count #31! And Demeter and Persephone definitely stole the show. How do we feel about Nico's arguments to get Hades to help the Olympians? Seriously, Hades needs some family therapy. Is Ethan purposefully trying to stall Kronos? Is he having regrets? Does Prometheus think he's smarter than Kronos? That drakon is very large. And very close. Percy's anger throughout The Last Olympian is totally valid. We're constantly impressed with how good of a leader and strategist Percy is. Why was Silena the one to lead the charge with the Ares Cabin? We really have to wait until next week to talk about what sort of impact this will have on the book and all these characters. Feedback (01:21:09) Jessica writes in to tell us she totally agrees with us on the concept of Western Civilization. Phoebe thinks Dionysus is afraid of the Party Ponies, and we find that visual totally hilarious.
