Lithium-ion battery devices are just about everywhere in our homes, from smartphones to cordless power tools. While the devices are convenient, it's important to know safety tips to prevent lithium-ion batteries from overheating and starting a fire. What should I look for when buying rechargeable items? Look for a safety certification from a nationally recognized testing laboratory like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) or ETL (Intertek). These certifications show the lithium-ion battery inside the product meets minimum U.S. safety standards for electrical and fire safety. When are lithium-ion batteries most at risk of catching fire? Charging is the riskiest time for lithium-ion batteries. To stay safe, always use the charger that came with the device or one that's approved by the manufacturer. Using an incompatible charger can lead to overheating, which increases the risk of fire. What are the warning signs that a charging battery might be unsafe? Watch for these common signs of battery failure: Unusual heat. A bulging or swollen battery. A strange, sweet, or metallic smell. If you notice any of these, stop using the device right away and unplug it from the charger. Where is the best place to store lithium-ion battery-powered devices? Store devices in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid keeping battery-powered items in cars, garages, or outdoor sheds, especially during very hot or cold weather. What's the safest way to dispose of lithium-ion batteries? Never put lithium-ion batteries in the regular trash or recycling bin. Damaged or improperly discarded batteries can ignite and cause fires in garbage trucks and landfills. Instead, take them to a certified battery recycling center. Find a location near you at Call2Recycle.org. Can I safely charge an e-bike and scooter indoors? No. The safest place to charge e-bikes and scooters is on a hard surface outdoors out of direct sunlight in a dry place. How do I safely charge devices with lithium-ion batteries? While no method is completely risk-free, you can reduce the fire risk by: Charging on a hard, non-flammable surface. Keeping devices away from flammable materials (such as beds, rugs, and couches). Monitoring the device. Unplugging after charging. How do I know if my device has a lithium-ion battery? Many everyday rechargeable devices use lithium-ion batteries, including: Smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Laptops. Power tools. E-bikes, e-scooters, and electric vehicles (EVs). Electric toothbrushes. Check the product manual or labeling for battery information. India's Battle Against Air PollutionHistorically, India has faced challenges with persistent air pollution as a result of industrial development. One key approach to combat this has been to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For example, Indian policymakers have been pushing for the commercialization of electric vehicles which has unlocked various incentives for companies like Vision Mechatronics to develop electric vehicles run by lithium-ion batteries. How Lithium-Ion Batteries Power EVsIndia “seeks to attain a 30% share of electric vehicles, in the total vehicles sold, by 2030” and accelerating the market for it by “moving from incentives to mandates” like a Zero Emission Vehicle policy (NITI Aayog). Taking advantage of this political support, Vision Mechatronics “aims to develop a complete domestic ecosystem around EVs” which have “zero tailpipe emissions” (Vision Mechatronics). Many electric vehicles are driven by lithium ion batteries which “can contain hundreds of individual cylindrical battery cells that are the same shape as common AA and AAA batteries” (Edmunds). They are extremely energy efficient and can store a multitude of energy; on full battery, electric cars powered by lithium-ion batteries can drive over 200 miles–although it may depend on the specific car model. Compared to their precursor, lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries have higher energy density which increases the mileage of a car. They are also extremely lightweight and this ensures that EVs aren't too heavy. Moreover, the electricity used to refuel the EVs come from renewable energy sources like solar power. The Environmental Cost of Battery ProductionThere are various concerns that lithium-ion battery powered cars take a long time to charge. Although this may be true for some models, recent developments have led to an increase in charging efficiency and overall energy storage. For instance, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 can be charged “from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes” (Edmunds). Moreover, the environmental impact that the creation of lithium-ion batteries has is detrimental as “the mining process for lithium and other materials used in these batteries can… lead to water pollution and habitat destruction” (Tara Electronics). Although this is the undeniable truth, it is promising to know that due to advancements in technology it has been shown that electric car batteries can “last 12 to 15 years in moderate climates”, meaning that they don't have short lifespans (Edmunds). Moreover, “instead of ending up in a scrapyard like most internal combustion engines do, electric vehicle batteries can be repurposed, refurbished, or recycled when they fail” (Edmunds).Building India's EV EcosystemGupta believes that local battery production in India can help India progress towards an economy that is powered by clean energy. She mentions that it has been difficult to employ skilled labor in this field due to geopolitical tensions and a lack of awareness regarding the importance of this field. However, she is trying to bridge this gap by making opportunities in her company as accessible to the next generation as possible. About Our GuestRashi Gupta, an advocate for clean energy, is the Founder & Managing Director of Vision Mechatronics Private Limited which is a battery company in India.ResourcesEdmunds, What You Need to Know About Electric Vehicle BatteriesVision Mechatronics, Renewable Energy Solutions for Electric VehiclesNITI Aayog, “Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India”Tara Electronics, Why Do Electric Cars Use Lithium Batteries Exploring the Advantages and ChallengesFurther ReadingEV Mechanica, Understanding Lithium-Ion Battery Technology in Electric VehiclesIBEF, Electric Vehicles: Electric Vehicle Industry in India and its GrowthFor a transcript of this episode, please visit https://climatebreak.org/lithium-ion-batteries-for-indias-clean-energy-future/.

The discussion revolves around the innovative work being done at Ionic Mineral Technologies, particularly in the realm of battery materials and sustainable energy solutions.Ionic MT is pioneering the commercialization of a unique mineral called halloysite, which has the potential to revolutionize battery technology. Halloysite is a naturally occurring clay mineral that can be transformed into nano-silicon, significantly enhancing battery performance. This transformation is crucial as the demand for more efficient and sustainable energy storage solutions continues to grow, particularly in electric vehicles (EVs) and consumer electronics. One of the standout features of Ionic MT's approach is its environmentally friendly production process. The company has developed a silane-free method to produce nano silicon, which not only minimizes waste but also results in one of the lowest carbon footprints among competing battery material companies. Additionally, the process generates boehmite alumina as a byproduct, further contributing to a sustainable production model.Andre emphasizes the importance of domestic production of battery materials, particularly in light of the U.S.'s heavy reliance on imported materials, predominantly from China. By producing high-quality silicon that can rival Chinese imports without the need for subsidies or tariffs, Ionic Mineral Technologies positions itself as a key player in the push for energy independence.Looking ahead, Andre shares his vision for the future, where advancements in battery technology could lead to electric vehicles charging in under ten minutes and lighter, more efficient military drones. With recent developments, including the designation of silicon and alumina as critical minerals by the U.S. government, Ionic MT is poised for significant growth and innovation. To learn more about Ionic Mineral Technologies, visit https://ionicmt.com/.

Over the past several years, lithium-ion batteries have become increasingly common. Most people are now familiar with the fire risks associated with the batteries used in e-bikes and scooters, devices that have tragically contributed to 34 fire related deaths in New York City since 2021, as of the date of publication. But, the presence of lithium-ion batteries goes far beyond micromobility. They're found in everything from electric vehicles to large grid-scale energy storage systems, some of which are being installed in urban environments within the five boroughs. In this episode, Battalion Chief Jason Cascone hosts a comprehensive discussion with FDNY Chief of Safety James Canty, and Hazmat Battalion Chiefs Ray Coyle and Matt Quinn about why lithium-ion batteries can be volatile, how to safely operate at fires involving them, and mitigating them on the fireground.

In this podcast episode we talk about all the modifications we did to my newly Police Harley. After getting it fully equipped with police-specific gear, it's now officially in service. Lurch and I talk about how we, as a department, decided to set up our police motorcycles, highlighting some of the specialty equipment used. While some features come factory-ready from Harley-Davidson, many others are department-specific or added by third-party vendors. Let's dive into the details. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE In addition to police-specific features, I've equipped my bike with several products donated from the Law Abiding Biker™ Store Biker Gripper Cell Phone Mount: The strongest, sleekest motorcycle cell phone mount available. It's perfect for quick access, even in the most demanding environments. It's tested on police courses and proven to hold phones securely, even when the bike is dropped. Ciro Cup Holder: For those long shifts or rides in hot weather, hydration is key. This cup holder ensures I always have my water or coffee within reach. Adjustable PSR Levers: These allow for customized grip and omfort and they are adjustable for ultimate feel and control. Armor Tail Light: This LED tail light, available from the Law Abiding Biker™ Store, is programmable with a smartphone app, offering various patterns to catch the attention of other motorists. Fang Signal Inserts: Replace stock halogen bulbs with these LED inserts for both front and rear signals, available in red or amber, depending on your preference. Ciro Filler Panel Lights: Fill those ugly voids in the rear of your bike with LED lighting.  More products mentioned in the video below CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! One of the most exciting aspects of this build was getting the green light for some performance upgrades. We installed a Stage One Kit, including a Screamin' Eagle high-flow intake and exhaust system, to improve airflow and enhance performance. Screamin' Eagle Intake and Exhaust: Although we used OEM Harley-Davidson parts, the upgrades significantly improved the bike's performance, making it sound better and increase power.  EFI Remapping and Tuning: After installing the intake and exhaust, we remapped the Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) using the Screamin' Eagle tuner. While not our first choice, it got the job done. In the future, we'd recommend the Vance & Hines Fuelpak 4 tuner, available in our store, for superior performance and ease of use. Comfort and Safety Mods Comfort is key, especially for officers spending long hours in the saddle. The addition of adjustable levers and an extended brake pedal greatly improved both comfort and safety. Adjustable Levers: The PSR Anthem Pro Adjustable Levers offer maximum customization, allowing you to find the perfect adjustment for both the clutch and brake. Extended Brake Pedal: This is one of the most important safety mods we made. The extended brake pedal is ergonomically designed, putting your foot in the ideal position for emergency braking, making it quicker and easier to stop when needed. The Supreme Court hears a case centering on the FDA's denial of applications for nicotine-based vapes containing flavored liquid seen as addictive for young people. And, damaged lithium-ion batteries can cause deadly explosions. An algorithm could help detect when they're about to happen.Supreme Court Hears Case On FDA Regulation Of Flavored VapesOn Monday, the US Supreme Court heard arguments in a case that could change the Food and Drug Administration's power to regulate nicotine-based vapes. It revolves around the FDA's denial of applications from two vape companies that sell flavored liquids in their products, citing that the liquids presented a danger in addicting young people to nicotine. But a lower court rejected that denial, saying the agency was inconsistent in its approval process. The decision could impact the FDA's regulatory power to ban the sale of some of these vapes in the US.Ira Flatow is joined by Rachel Feltman, host of the Popular Science podcast “The Weirdest Thing I Learned This Week,” to talk about the health implications of the case. They also discuss other top science stories of the week, including why there's been a large decrease in cervical cancer rates over the past decade, why Venus probably wasn't able to support ancient life (contradicting some hopeful theories), and new information about when humans might've started to wear clothing, thanks to some clues from lice.A Warning For When A Lithium-Ion Battery Is About To ExplodeLithium-ion batteries are used in all sorts of electronics, like smart phones, laptops, and e-bikes. That's because they can store a lot of energy in a small package. Unfortunately, this also means that when a battery is damaged, there's a lot of energy to expel, which can lead to explosions and fires. While there are no national statistics available, in New York City alone, there have been 733 fires started by lithium-ion batteries since 2019, which killed 29 people and injured 442. Most of these fires are a result of e-bike or scooter batteries catching fire. Now, researchers have trained AI algorithms to be able to better predict when a lithium-ion battery is about to explode. The battery makes a hissing sound two minutes before an explosion.Ira talks with two researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology about their work on the subject: Dr. Andy Tam, mechanical engineer in the Fire Research Division, and Dr. Anthony Putorti, fire protection engineer and leader of the Firefighting Technology Group.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.
