Chapter-by-Chapter continues with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 25: The Beetle at Bay. MuggleCast last discussed this chapter on Episode 462! Harry's feelings toward his fellow students in light of the Azkaban breakout headlines have us once more feeling like we are living in the books today. The Ministry's control of information and issuance of propaganda, the extent which is confirmed in this chapter, is massive but not perfect. Some who look deeper are beginning to see the cracks in the facade. Umbridge's power grabs are becoming unenforceable. The hosts discuss how her main goal appears to be to frighten and dissuade dissenters, even among the staff. Harry and students are impressed by Neville's recent hard work in the D.A. This reminds us about when we made the "Neville Gets Swole" Spotify playlist, perfect for your summertime runs and workouts! Is Hermione single-handedly changing the course of the Wizarding world? We think so. Is there anything the students can/should be doing about Hagrid and his probation? Or is his behavior just too weird, and the students too buried in coursework? Ron has a fair idea, but Hermione shuts him down cold. We hold a memorial service for Ron's strategical aptitude subplot from Book 1. In what ways was "Madame Puddifoot's" NOT the perfect Valentine's spot, and whose fault is it that Harry and Cho's date is a disaster? Was it doomed from the start? Is Rita Skeeter looking for redemption, or just some hot goss? Odds & Ends asks why Ron, Fred or George do not seem to know about Antonin Dolohov's connection with their uncles, nor do they mention it. Most #RealTalk moment of the week? Hosts weigh in. The Irish republicans who led the Easter Rising of 1916 are tried for treason by the British government, and sentenced to death. Some are so unwell they have to be tied to a chair to be killed, and the brutality of these executions turns the tide of public opinion in Ireland, increasing support for the Republican cause. The remaining revolutionaries are carted off to prisons and internment camps, where they come up with new ideas for the next fight for independence. The British press has misrepresented the Easter Rising as “The Sinn Féin Rebellion”, but this accidental branding gives the political party a newfound prominence, and its leaders seek to turn it into a national republican organisation. In 1918, during the first British general election where women can vote, Sinn Fein candidates win 73 seats in the Houses of Parliament. But they refuse to go to Westminster. They create their own parliament and declare themselves an independent Irish Republic. Meanwhile, the newly-named Irish Republican Army launches guerrilla attacks on the police force upholding British rule in Ireland. A new war of independence has begun… Listen as William and Anita are joined once again by Diarmaid Ferriter, author of A Nation Not A Rabble, to discuss the significance of the Irish War of Independence.  _____________ Empire UK Live Tour: The podcast is going on a UK tour! In this episode we interview D. Óg, an Irish Republican and Irish language activist who works with Iskra Books, and their Irish language imprint Bradán Feasa. In this discussion we talk about the Iskra Books publication The Dark: Selected Writings of Brendan Hughes.  Hughes, was a former Irish Republican Army volunteer, political prisoner, and Hunger Striker. And while he is a very well known figure within Irish Republican circles and among those who have studied the provisional IRA, some folks may also have become introduced to him through the book and the Fx/Hulu series Say Nothing. In this episode I talk to D a bit about several of The Dark's writings, about the politics of Brendan Hughes, his internationalism, his solidarity with Palestinians, and his lifelong commitment to a 32 county socialist Irish Republic. Along the way we talk about Hughes' response to the so-called Good Friday Agreement, or has Hughes called it “Got F*ck All,” his critiques of the political trajectory of Sinn Féin, and more.  We highly recommend you check out this book from the comrades at Iskra Books. As with all their work there is a free pdf version you can download from there website, so do that to check it out, but also I really recommend ordering yourself a physical copy to support their work and to add this beautiful book to your collection.  I also just want to mention that if you're interested in conversations about counterinsurgency, Orisanmi Burton and I have released part one of a two part conversation on Frank Kitson and his book Low Intensity Operations, for a brief period Kitson was in charge of the counterrevolutionary campaign against the IRA, as well as counterrevolutionary wars in Kenya against the Mau Mau, and in Malaya. Sadly though, Bridget died when Pax was aged 8, and his youngest sister was just one month old. With tensions building in Ireland and in World War One, Pax's brother Michael enlisted in the British Army… but to Pax – who'd joined the local branch of the Irish Republican Army, this was unacceptable and the brothers ceased speaking for decades.Whilst Pax didn't really speak of his time in the Army, Daniel has managed to find sources in museums and archives that help tell the story of his Great Grandfather.THE BRICK WALL - PATRICK LAVIN and ANN BRENNAN  A vanishing act in the 20th Century is what is causing Daniel to collide with a Brick Wall – he's looking for information on Patrick Lavin (or Lavan) and wife Ann Brennan.Daniel doesn't know much about this couple, but he has found that Patrick was born circa 1854, and Mary Brennan circa 1861.The couple married in January 1882 and remained around the area of Kiltimagh, County Mayo, in Ireland, and had a family of six daughters between 1882 and 1893.However, Daniel is stuck with trying to find much about their parents. He knows Patrick's father was alive in 1882 and also called Patrick, but that Ann's father John had died. The last time Daniel has found Patrick and Ann in the records is on the 1911 census – and then they just vanish!Where did Patrick and Ann go after 1911?If you think that you have a research idea or clue that can help Daniel to overcome his brick wall, then you can find him via the links at his Carrd profile or drop him a message on Bluesky or Twitter. Ireland and Spain are to grant formal recognition to a Palestine state as soon as this month. The move puts Dublin and Madrid at odds with most other EU states and with the United States. Sweden is the only other state to have recognised Palestine during its membership of the EU, and that was a decade ago. In this episode, Tony Connelly, the Europe editor for the Irish public broadcaster RTE, describes the historical and political backdrop to Ireland's decision. Reasons include pressure from the left-wing party Sinn Féin, the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army that had operational ties with the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Recognition is a way to give moral support to Palestinians particularly in Gaza where the Israeli military has killed around 35,000 people in response to the attack by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7 that killed around 1,200. Recognition also marks a significant break with the long-established view that Palestinian statehood only should come after a two-state agreement with Israel. But who Dublin would recognise as the representatives of a Palestinian state remains an open question, and there's little expectation of any immediate impact on the Gaza conflict. The move also adds to bad blood between Dublin and Tel Aviv that's been aggravated by recent spats involving former prime minister Leo Varadkar and the Eurovision performer Bambie Thug. While a shared struggle for independence helps explain Irish readiness to lend Palestinians support, how modern Irish history maps onto Palestine is far from straightforward. During the 1920s some 700 Irish police were deployed to British-administered Mandatory Palestine to support a mostly British police force with a reputation for brutality, the Black and Tans. And in the 1940s Jewish militants fighting the British in Palestine actually identified with the IRA and its leaders like Michael Collins. An ambiguous Irish relationship with Zionism can be seen in novelist James Joyce's masterwork Ulysses. Joyce's protagonist Leopold Bloom proclaims unity among "all, jew, moslem and gentile" even as he must contend with virulent antisemitism in Dublin. Friends in Ireland have sent us a video (see below) from an underground activist group sending a message using an AI rendering of Ireland's famous freedom fighter, Michael Collins. The initial message on the first clip of the video includes Collin's message to his people: It is not to political leaders our people must look, but to themselves. Leaders are but individuals, and individuals are imperfect, liable to error and weakness. The strength of the nation will be the strength of the spirit of the whole people. Michael Collins Easter Rising 2024 is in reference to the Irish Easter Rising which was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter week in April 1916. The rising was launched by Irish republicans against British rule in Ireland with the aim of establishing an independent Irish Republic. The rising raised awareness and increased the desire for the Irish to be free from Britain. Michael Collins was an Irish revolutionary, soldier and politician who was a leading figure in their fight for independence from the British. He was the Director of Intelligence of the Irish Republican Army and a government minister of the new Irish Republic. After fighting for their independence, the Irish, led by Collins, negotiated their right to their own sovereignty state separate from England. This was a huge victory for freedom after Ireland had been occupied by the British since the 12th century. After the treaty was formed, Collins became the country's first Chairman of the Provisional Government of the Irish Free State and the Commander-in-Chief of the National Army until his death in an Ambush in August 1922. Numerous historians believe that Collins was duped into accepting an agreement which only changed the public perception of independence while major institutions, such as banking, were still under the control of England. Many people also believe that this same arrangement has been foisted on countries worldwide under the hidden control of the city of London banking system and the global central bankers. The country was split as members within the freedom movement did not agree with the new arrangement with Britain. This ultimately led to an Irish civil war and eventually Collins death in 1922. Evidence exists that the man who shot Collins was a member of the British Army who was active in providing intel for the British Army Intelligence Center. There was a movie named, Michael Collins, starring Liam Neeson from 1996 which garnered 4 movie awards and 17 nominations, including two Academy award nominations. The movie is currently available on Amazon with the tagline "Michael Collins, the man and the movie, stands tall. The man is a hero whose fighting tactics became a model for other 20th-century struggles."     Message from our friends in Ireland: See on Bastyon | Bitchute | Brighteon | Clouthub | Odysee | Rumble | Youtube | Freedom.Social

Today I did a live broadcast which will be the first of a series of online concerts I plan to do about resistance. Whether we're talking about armed uprisings, mass civil disobedience, or actions carried out by much smaller groups of people, current events and history are full of stories of resistance. "When you fight, you win" may not quite be actually true, even if it's a good slogan. But even if making the effort doesn't always get the desired results, resistance in its many forms often leads to positive changes that wouldn't have happened otherwise. The themes I explore in this episode include: When the Ottoman Navy rescued as many as 800,000 Spanish Jews in 1492 The Merthyr Rising in Wales in 1831 The Rent Strike Wars in New York State in the 1840's The resistance to British occupation by the Irish Republican Army in the 1970's and 1980's The blockade of Prince William Sound in Alaska in 1993 Muslim-Christian solidarity on the Kenya-Somalia border in 2015 Palestine Action's continuing resistance to Elbit Systems' efforts to supply the Israeli war machine with weaponry The resistance of Ansar Allah, aka the Houthi Army, in solidarity with the besieged people of Gaza on the Red Sea

It's rare that we do a picture book from Betsy's old Top 100 Picture Books Poll from back in 2012, but today's the day, we guess. This book came in at #96 and reading it today we were surprised at how well it had aged in spite of its 1972 publication date. You probably know Bernard Waber best as the creator of Lyle, Lyle Crocodile. Today we're talking about Joe the Button Pusher, the Irish Republican Army, and where folks stand on the whole teddy bear issue. Jason will forever be associated with the 166th episode of Seinfeld, which featured Festivus…the holiday where families express their disappointment in each other, then demonstrate feats of strength around an unadorned, aluminum pole. For Seinfeld writer Dan O'Keefe, the horrors of the real-life Festivus, invented by his mad genius father, were traumatizing events. Really, no Really! Since the Festivus episode aired, it has been celebrated by a multitude of families, as an alternative to traditional holidays. But Festivus isn't the only neuvo-holiday tradition; 20% of Americans say their families celebrate similarly bizarre holiday traditions. To discuss the true origin and lesser-known details of his family's holiday and talk about the phenomenon that Festivus has become, we invited Dan O'Keefe to reminisce and reflect. Dan is a writer and producer, who in addition to working on Seinfeld also worked on The Drew Carey Show, The Tonight Show, Married…with Children, Bevis and Butthead, Silicon Valley, Veep and many more.   ON THIS EPISODE: How Seinfeld showrunners had to pressure Dan to get his Festivus story. The bizarre origins of other holiday traditions. Proper Festivus music, including Italian Chip Monk songs, and the music of the Irish Republican Army. The Festivus Pole and the other, bonkers, real-life symbols! Dan's out-of-body experience…making the Festivus episode. Jason and Dan's memories of filming the Festivus dinner scene. Revealed: The proper main course for Festivus Dinner! Dan's father's reaction to the episode was surprising. The actual meaning of “a Festivus for the rest of us.” Dan's dad created other, even weirder, holidays. This week, the lads have been heartened and dismayed by public statements from the two most eminent female economists of our time. Christine Lagarde and Janet Yellen. But while Yellen fell back onto tired old State Department talking points, Lagarde gave a pitch-perfect introduction to the multipolar age. Does the global elite finally get it? And if so, how will they trim their sheets from here on out? While he was dealing with the Irish Republican Army on his foreign trip last week, Joseph Biden was hanging ever more of his domestic credibility on another IRA -the Inflation Reduction Act. Philip Pilkington sees two big takeaways from this $500 billion barrel of pork. First: the return of real dirigiste industrial policy to America. Secondly: the advent of Big Green as a powerful lobbying force on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, Andrew Collingwood has been watching Lula enter through the Beijing door that Macron just exited - bearing a similar amount of fresh deals and good cheer from President Xi. As they watch China build out Brazil's 5G network, will there, he wonders, be a sniff of buyers' regret from the 'Manhattan charity auction set' for having backed a Chomskyite old-Marxist over the more unpalatable, yet much more US-friendly, Jair Bolsonaro?

When does the force of argument become stronger than the argument of force? In this episode, we speak with Jon McCourt, a community peace activist for over forty years in the City of Derry, North of Ireland. As a young man, he marched on the first civil rights demonstration in Derry in 1968. Witnessing the murder of friends and neighbors on Bloody Sunday, he joined the Irish Republican Army to resist British occupation. He left the IRA in 1976, and since then, he's worked to build bridges between Catholic and Protestant communities in the North of Ireland and foster peace and reconciliation. For the first fifteen minutes, we talk about the history of the troubles and the Irish resistance before going on to discuss his work, personal experiences, and how victims and survivors move forward after conflict. Born to Win Podcast - with Ronald L. Dart

I was standing, looking out an open window in my hotel room at Victoria Station in London one night. My wife and I had been to the theater, had just got back in, and opened the window for a little fresh air. I heard a rumble, uncharacteristic of London weather, and I remarked, I hope that’s thunder. It wasn’t. The IRA had set off a bomb two blocks from our hotel in a trash bin along the street. No one was hurt, but it was a little disconcerting. I can’t help wondering what the IRA realistically hoped to gain in all this. Were they really doing their thing with a goal in mind, or are they like bunch of Ozark boys turning over outhouses on Halloween?I am persuaded that, in all too many cases, people who are fighting in wars have long since forgotten what the war is all about. They don’t remember the grievance or, if they do, they have only heard about it from their great-great-grandfathers and never, in all their lifetime, experience the grievance in question. Why on earth did the Irish Republican Army keep on bombing the English? Why can’t they kiss and make up? There are lives to be lived, jobs to be done, grandchildren to be loved. And after all, they are brothers. When I reflect on this, and look back through eons of time to the House of Israel and the House of Judah, I can’t help marveling at the ongoing war between these two nations of brothers. Here we are 24 years since the death of Solomon—24 years since God told everyone to stop fighting and go home—yet still the wars between Judah and Israel go on.
