As we all know, Square Enix recently announced it's plans to sell Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and much of it's western development studios and IP to Embracer Group. Many assumed that this was due to a mix of Marvel's Avengers underperforming combined with an assumed effort to trim the fat to better prime the remainder of the company to an interested party, with Sony at the forefront of that assumed list. Well, recently it was reported that Square Enix feared that these studios were "cannibalizing" sales from their rest of their studios and that by selling them they could be more efficient with their capital. Could that still mean that Square is looking to sell, or does their renewed interest in doubling down on their very successful Japanese games and developers show that they may be looking to remain independant? We share our thoughts on this, Multiversus' first season pass, Modern Warfare II's beta dates and early access, Marvel's Midnight Sun delaying in what is likely response to God of War: Ragnarok and The Last of Us Part I, Lara Croft's next adventure sounding surprisingly dirty from its vague synopsis and more! Greetings Button Mashers! The boys are back to talk about video games once again. What's in store this episode? Ho boy! I'll tell you, that's actually the purpose of this description. You see, a description is a statement in picture or words that describes. Anyway, Nintendo had another Direct that dared to dish the dates of delicious digital delights like Bayonetta 3 and Persona 5 Royal. We go over some rumors about the Horizon TV show coming to Netflix, and the almost shared release dates of Skull and Bones and God of War Ragnarok. PlayStation went on a tweet spree sharing info for several upcoming Indies, GTA 6 rumors are aplenty, and Forspoken was delayed. After the news we sweat it out with the hottest segment on the interwebs; The Heat Check, and Dave shares with us a GG sure to please Roguelite fans all over the world. As always, we go over the games we've been playing in *excruciating* detail that borders on psychotic. Finally, in celebration of Episode 69 we discuss who are the absolute Hottest Daddies in video games. Nice would be selling it short.
If the title isn't clear, this is a PlayStation news heavy week. Not all news, but a good chunk. EA is making waves with a new Skate Announcement. LEGO has a few big announcements up its sleeve, that's what she said! Amazon and HBO Max aren't pulling any punches with new trailer drops. Netflix is double down on its password enforcement. And was the movement to restore the Snyderverse all a ruse? That and more in this weeks episode.
Brand new God of War Ragnarok story details have been released and it points to a very large game. This latest God of War Ragnarok update thankfully comes officially from the Sony store and not another leak. Many have argued that this game is just glorified God of War DLC which in light of the recent details is laughable. God of War Ragnarök is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is scheduled to be released in 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. On this week's episode of IGN's PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond!, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Jada Griffin, Tom Marks, and Mark Medina to discuss all the latest and greatest in the world of PlayStation, including our thoughts on why Stray is the adorable cat game we hoped for. But first, we jump into some of the PlayStation news of the last week, including the announcement of the new PlayStation Stars loyalty program, whether we hope it means the return of PlayStation Home thanks to its assortment of digital collectible, and how we hope these new features are implemented. Then, we talk a bit about God of War Ragnarok's new story synopsis (skip ahead if you don't want to hear any details), as well as PlayStation deepening its investment in the esports space. Then, we dive into our thoughts on Stray, the new PlayStation-console exclusive from Annapurna and BlueTwelve Studio. Tom reviewed Stray for IGN, so he offers some thoughts from his review about why he thought Stray was great, Jonathon and Mark offer their experiences having beaten Stray as well, and Jada offers her early impressions from the beginning of Stray…as well as how she played Tokyo Jungle to get another cat gaming experience while she waited. We also dig into a lovely Jak & Daxter Memory Card story, read some of your responses to Mark's TLOU question from last week, and help a listener figure out what RPGs to jump into. The news has slowed that considerably compared to weeks prior, but that's fine because it gives more room to get in touch with what the audience is thinking. Our collective focus is on the future of Xbox Game Pass where many of your chimed in about a variety of paths that the brand can take. What devices or consoles could it appear on? What regions may it thrive in? Should DLC also arrive for free alongside Day One games? Will Xbox craft their own native handheld and submerge themselves in that market? Indeed, the options Xbox has with this service are quite tantalizing, and so with that we dive straight in. In the lighter news load, we speak on God Of War: Ragnarok filling the void Starfield left behind. Is this a shot from PlayStation? We break it down. Alongside that, it appears any hope of Xbox 360 support is canned as Xbox reaches an inflection point with the strong yet fading Games With Gold. Learn more about your ad choices. Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is finally out so Brad and Krispy take a deep dive into this massive expansion. Chris Davis sells us on Sniper Elite 5 thanks to some surprisingly open design elements and a cool invasion mode that sounds like a ton of fun. Plus, Nick brings his latest obsession with modern "Boomer Shooters" to the table with Forgive Me Father - an addictive FPS with Lovecraft undertones and a striking visual style. In the news, we cover new release dates and delays.

On this week's episode of IGN's PlayStation show, Podcast Beyond!, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Brian Altano and Mark Medina to discuss all the latest and greatest in the world of PS4 and PS5 games. And of course, we jump right into the fact that God of War Ragnarok finally has a release date, and it's hitting on November 9. PlayStation also revealed the collector's editions for God of War Ragnarok, and we dig into what players can expect from the special editions for PS4 and PS5 players. We discuss God of War's release date and how it fits into the rest of PlayStation's year, what we expect we'll get from God of War Ragnarok ahead of its launch, such as trailers or a God of War-focused State of Play, and why it was so frustrating and disappointing to see God of War devs face abuse ahead of the release date reveal. God of War Ragnarok's release date isn't the only big calendar change for the rest of 2022's PlayStation games lineup we discuss, though, as we also talk about Forspoken's delay into 2023. We dig into the unique phrasing Square Enix uses for Forspoken's release date delay, but how it may be a good thing for the game's chances at success. We also discuss why it makes sense for PlayStation and Square Enix to want to move Forspoken out of the fall, what PlayStation's end-of-year 2022 lineup will look like, and more. Plus, we discuss a bit of the other news of the week, including Sucker Punch confirming there are no Infamous or Sly Cooper games in the works, the alleged reports that Rockstar is reportedly not working on GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters, and dig into a Final Fantasy demo-focused Memory Card.
It's a relatively slow week in the world of PlayStation, but there are still matters to discuss. Yes: We're all curious about when God of War: Ragnarok's release date will be revealed, and we have some things to say about this strange new line of Sony electronics under the INZONE brand. But really, we'd rather get into the weeds with smaller stories and lots of listener inquiries. Topics range from Horizon's TV debut and the potential of Persona live-action media to the return of Star Ocean and Final Fantasy XVI's British-style English. Speaking of Final Fantasy XVI, we also get into just what's happening with Square Enix and its relationship with PlayStation. Is Sony courting the publisher, particularly with so much money heaped at it for timed exclusivity and marketing? Plus: Do we care about speedruns? Are live service games ruining our gaming cadences? Should Sony have allowed its studios to speak out on Roe vs. Wade? All of that and more on the other side of the play button. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
