In the golden age of the gods, Asgard, the home of the Aesir, stood as a realm of splendor and power. But the gods sought protection from their enemies and decided to build an impenetrable fortress around their divine city. One day, a mysterious builder appeared, offering to construct the walls within a single season—on one impossible condition: he demanded the goddess Freyja, the sun, and the moon as his reward. The gods, confident he would fail, agreed. But as the builder neared completion, aided by his mighty horse Svadilfari, the gods realized they had been tricked. What followed was a tale of cunning, divine intervention, and Loki's mischief that shaped the fate of Asgard forever. Sleep and Sorcery | Folklore & Fantasy-Inspired Sleep Stories
Explore the city of the gods in this Norse mythology-inspired bedtime story. In tonight's bedtime story, you are a child of Asgard, and beloved by the Aesir. As such, they welcome you into their magnificent halls. You wander, for a day, through your favorite places, learning from the gods, like Frigg, Odin, and Thor. As night draws near, you join Heimdall, the watcher for the gods, outside the gates – and as you guard Bifrost, the rainbow bridge, he tells you stories of how all things came to be. Sleep & Sorcery is a folklore and fantasy-inspired sleep series. My name is Laurel, and I'll be your guide on tonight's fantastical journey. Sleep & Sorcery is one part bedtime story, one part guided meditation, and one part dreamy adventure. Listen to my voice for as long as you like, and when you're ready, feel free to let go of the story and relax into sleep. If you're still awake as the story comes to an end, I'll guide you through a relaxing visualization exercise. -
In this explainer, Ryan dives into what makes the Nordic Gods what they are. This explainer will cover how all Gods are not the same, the attributes that unite the Nordic Gods and set them apart from other forms of deity, their main groups better known as the Aesir, Vanir, Jotnar, and Others, how they interact, and what this means for modern Heathen and Pagan practitioners.
The troupe had some uncomfortable realizations about themselves and each other. New Rogue received a Rod of Double-Checking to help combat his tendency towards black-and-white thinking, Del played Warhammer with Lucretia Sanguine, who she learned to be Aesir's mother, and a horrified Adam learned about his crimes as Shadow Nemesis and left to get a drink with New Rogue and the Doctor Deputy. Meanwhile, Tyler caught a ground worm and tried to leap on it and stab it, but instead knocked himself out with his own sword. Will the troupe survive a fishing mishap, a drunken revel, and a scheming squire? Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Ryan LaPlante. Check out my YT : https://youtu.be/b1ZARgjs0x0 Loki, in Norse mythology, is a cunning trickster who had the ability to change his shape and sex. Although his father is the giant Fárbauti, he is included among the Aesir (a tribe of gods). Loki is represented as the companion of the great gods Odin and Thor, helping them with his clever plans but sometimes causing embarrassment and difficulty for them and himself. He also appeared as the enemy of the gods, entering their banquet uninvited and demanding their drink. He was depicted as a fly, a mare, and possibly an elderly woman. Most notably, he caused the death of the god Baldr. Loki was bound to a rock (by the entrails of one or more of his sons, according to some sources) as punishment, thus in many ways resembling the Greek figures Prometheus and Tantalus. Also like Prometheus, Loki is considered a god of fire. Loki's relations with the gods end with his role in engineering the death of the beautiful and generally beloved god Baldr. After orchestrating Baldr's death, Loki was chased by the gods and bound to a rock with the entrails of one of his sons. A venomous serpent was placed above his face. The dripping venom that Loki's faithful wife Sigyn collected in a bowl, but when the bowl became full, she left to pour out the venom. Then the snake's venom dripped onto Loki's face, making him writhe in pain, which caused earthquakes. According to the Prose Edda, Loki will break free from his chains during Ragnarök, the end of the world as prophesied in Norse mythology. He will then join forces with the giants and wage war against the gods. This is a battle in which he and the other major figures of Norse mythology will ultimately perish. #NorseHistory #Loki #ThorsHammer #AncientHistory #HistoryUncovered #loki #mimirswellmeditation #mimirswell #mimirswellpodcast #norsegods #norsemythology #vikinggods #vikings #germanic #scandinavia #heathenry #norsepagan --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mimirswell/support

Gods of the North by Robert E. Howard audiobook. 'The Frost-Giant's Daughter' is, arguably the earliest chronological story by Robert E. Howard in terms of Conan's life. The brief tale is set somewhere in frozen Nordheim, geographically situated north of Conan's homeland, Cimmeria. Conan is depicted by Howard as a youthful Cimmerian mercenary traveling among the golden-haired Aesir in a war party. Shortly before the story begins, a hand-to-hand battle has occurred on an icy plain. Eighty men ('four score') have perished in bloody combat, and Conan alone survives the battlefield where Wulfhere's Aesir 'reavers' fought the Vanir 'wolves' of Bragi, a Vanir chieftain. Thus, the story opens. Following this fierce battle against the red-haired Vanir, Conan the Cimmerian, lying exhausted on the corpse-strewn battlefield, is visited by a beautiful, condescending and semi-nude woman identifying herself as 'Atali.' Upon her bodice, she wears a transparent veil: a wisp of gossamer that was not spun by human distaff. The mere sight of her strange nakedness kindles Conan's lust and, when she repeatedly taunts him, he madly chases her for miles across the snows with the intent of raping her. The excitement continues but I won't ruin the story for you by saying more. Can Conan deal with this daughter of a frost-giant? And what when her daddy shows up? Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode Chris brings us a bit of Opinion Scholarship on a recurring theme in world mythology--that of the War of the Gods. He discusses the strange idea of two distinct races of gods that come into conflict with one another. The ancient Greeks have the Titans and Olympians, the Bible has it's Angels and Demons, Zoroastrianism has Ahura Mazda and Ahriman and the Hindu's have the Devas and Asuras. The one left out of this list, comes from the Scandinavian north, from the Norse--the Aesir and Vanir--and this makes up the meat of the discussion. We examine the 21st century ethnographer--Thor Heyerdahl--and his theory surrounding the origin of the Norse in Azerbaijan, Odin as a historical person and the "war of the gods" as a battle between waring tribes. Enjoy ;)

Season 2, Episode 26. Shawn and David conclude the season long series on Loki: the cause of and solution to all of life's problems. Shawn recaps the adventures of Loki up to this point, and we explore the sections of Lokasenna and Gylfaginning Chapter 50 which provide the story of Loki fleeing from the Aesir after his involvement in the death of Baldur. Loki turns himself into a fish and we learn why Loki is his own worst enemy. Thor is finally not afraid to get wet, and surprise return of the long departed Kvasir. Does this prove that there is no continuity to the stories of Norse Mythology? David analyses what we can take away from the imagery of Loki the fish, and Loki's torture by a goddess, and the aid provided by Loki's wife. It is the story of the development of consciousness and awakening of the unconscious. Season 2 Episode 19 Part 1 of 2 Frey's "Courtship" of Gerdr Shawn and David tell the story of Frey the lovesick lover from Snori's Prose Edda Frey shows up in relatively few stories, besides his arrival with the Aesir in a hostage exchange with the Vanir, Lokasenna, and Skirnismal - the story of Frey gaining the hand of the giantess Gerd, through the coercive efforts of his servant Skirnir. Shawn and David talk about Frey as a fertility god and the archetypal Lover. David gives more detail on the myth of Percival, the Holy Grail, and the Fisher King, as a potential parallel to Frey's story and the existing Jungian analysis of the meaning behind Percival, the Hero who finds the Lover aspect. Next week look forward to Part 2 - Skirnismal from the Poetic Edda and more discussion of the Shadow aspects of Frey the Lover and how Percival finds true love and mature masculinity where Frey fails. Season 2, Episode 7, We return to the stories of Loki, “The cause of and solution to all of life's problems.” This week Loki settles down and becomes a family man. Raising one or two children with the goddess Sigyn and he has three legendary children with the Giant Angrboda of Jotunheim: Fenrir the Wolf, Jormungandr the World Serpent, and Hel the goddess of the underworld. The Aesir are not amused and fear the harm these children will cause, sending them off to distant lands. David gives one last interpretation on Loki, Svadilfari, and the importance of Love (Eros) for the Trickster Archetype. We look at some of the parallels between Loki and Odin, review the story of Thor and the Midgard Serpent (Season 1 Episode 13), and discuss a bit about the significance of the goddess Hel (Hella). Next week we will go in depth on Fenrir the Wolf and the myths about Loki's less famous children. This episode covers the very first war that ever occurred in the world. But why did it happen and who exactly is fighting who? Did the Aesir kill the goddess Freyja three times over? And who exactly are the Vanir? Are they original to the pagan tradition or did Snorri make them up to fill in some gaps? You might be surprised how hard some of these questions are to answer and you might be surprised at how weird modern scholarship can get sometimes. After a purgatorial thirteen months, Mark will be released from his Cain-like wanderings and allowed to repatriate to Kingston where he will get to be home. He figures that if Immanuel Kant got to be world famous before the age of global communications without leaving a 50 kilometer radius of his hometown, he has more than paid his dues. If anyone wants him to attend a function in the future, they had best plan on getting married and/or dying in close proximity to Mark's home.01:43 AYURIS: Lost Ruins of Arnak (Elwen & Mín, CGE, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:51 -Foundations of Rome (Emerson Matsuuichi, Arcane Wonders, 2022)07:05 -Golem (Flaminia Brasini, Virginio Gigli, & Simone Luciani, Cranio Creations, 2021)10:56 -Token Terrors: Battlegrounds (John de Campos & Phillip Doccolo, Terrible Games, 2020)16:50 -Switch & Signal (David Thompson, KOSMOS, 2020)19:13 -Unsettled (Marc Neidlinger & Tom Mattson, Orange Nebula, 2021)27:09 -Ark Nova (Mathias Wigge, Feuerland Spiele, 2021)28:21 -The Bridges of Shangri-La (Leo Colovini, Uberplay, 2003)32:09 -Merchants of the Dark Road (Brian Suhre, Elf Creek Games, 2022)36:09 -Paper Tales (Masato Uesugi, Stronghold, 2017)38:31 -Memoir '44 (Richard Borg, Days of Wonder, 2004)41:52 -Iwari (Michael Schacht, ThunderGlyph Games, 2020)News (and why it doesn't matter):44:51 Ghost Adventure: spinning, grabbing, tilting! 45:57 Uwe Rosenberg's Atiwa (Ghana)47:42 Idavoll for Nidavellir: giants, Aesir, and more49:33 Terra Mystica minus tracks becomes Terra Nova?50:24 Terraforming Mars: Dice Game
"Saint Patrick, the Apostle of the Irish, was seized from his native Britain by Irish marauders when he was sixteen years old. Though the son of a deacon and grandson of a priest, it was not until his captivity that he sought out the Lord with his whole heart. In his Confession, the testament he wrote towards the end of his life, he says, 'After I came to Ireland — every day I had to tend sheep, and many times a day I prayed — the love of God and His fear came to me more and more, and my faith was strengthened. And my spirit was so moved that in a single day I would say as many as a hundred prayers, and almost as many at night, and this even when I was staying in the woods and on the mountain; and I would rise for prayer before daylight, through snow, through frost, through rain, and I felt no harm." After six years of slavery in Ireland, he was guided by God to make his escape, and afterwards struggled in the monastic life in Aesir in Gaul [now France], under the guidance of the holy Bishop Germanus. Many years later he was ordained bishop and sent to Ireland once again, about the year 432, to convert the Irish to Christ. His arduous labours bore so much fruit that within seven years, three bishops were sent from Gaul to help him shepherd his flock, 'my brethren and sons whom I have baptized in the Lord -- so many thousands of people,' he says in his Confession. His apostolic work was not accomplished without much 'weariness and painfulness,' long journeys through difficult country, and many perils; he says his very life was in danger twelve times. When he came to Ireland, as its enlightener, it was a pagan country; when he ended his earthly life some thirty years later, about 461, the Faith of Christ was established in every corner." (Great Horologion) The work of St Patrick and his brethren has been called the most successful single missionary venture in the history of the Church. It is said of St Patrick that he chanted the entire Psalter every day.
